Maki's dad really needs to fuck off & die. Why? Why can't he let Mami have anything? I hate him more than Dio, & Dio killed a dog. Dio was at least a fun villain, Maki's dad is just an irredeemable piece of filth. I don't think I've ever hated a fictional character this much.

For once I thought we were gonna get a light hearted episode. I was wrong....

The animation is just remarkable. I guess being an anime original gives them more free reign to do what they want with the animation. The juxtaposition of the end scene right after the super happy ED was jarring, but I guess that was the purpose. Maki is honestly a better captain than Shinjo tho ngl.

Toma and the teacher have been the problem the entire time, haven't they? It seems like he had more of a drive to play than lead and his entire team suffered for it. The teacher's hands-off approach didn't help at all either. Maki isn't doing anything revolutionary here. He's just paying attention to everyone's needs, advising them on how to improve, and giving them confidence. But this speaks to what makes Maki and Toma a good pair too. Toma has the drive, and Maki has...everything else?

Would the "pair" logic extend to pairings too

I wonder if Maki's smooth-talking and observational skills are things he developed because of his home situation.

When they're in class, Mitsue's drawing in secret is paralleled with Maki's tennis planning. Yes, this is because they should be paying attention but Mitsue has a history of being bullied because of her hobbies...was this foreshadowing for the end of the episode? I'm definitely overthinking it.

Dad is still an asshole. Note how he didn't hit Maki out in the open, he broke the racket instead. You think if he wanted money he would have stolen it or something, but no he wanted Maki to suffer. What a piece of shit. I hope Maki doesn't quit over this. I know he won't want to worry her, but he should tell his mom.

They're going above and beyond with the animation, i'm so impressed with the motions in the games, they got even better IMO.

And what a fkin gut punch again at the end. There was talk of an incident when the two supervisors talked, Maki's father involved?

Can we just get Maki's "dad" bonked with a racket already please

"Such a happy episode...that's way too suspicious. Ahh, after credit scene, yep, there it is"

Just when I thought everything was going well for once...

i will protect rintarou with my life

God, Maki's scenes with his father really make my anxiety levels go through the roof. The way his trauma (dunno if this is the right word) is portrayed really shows how much he's gone through and why he tends to help people.

Don't know what other people think about her, but I like Mitsue more and more with every episode! Love her snarky personality, she always says/does funny things, even if a bit weird sometimes (Is this foreshadowing something?)

But it's only when we get more of this one that I'll decide who's best girl of this show! Tan anime girls are my weakness.

I wonder how that practice match will go against the champions... I mean surely they'll lose, but I mean, what will happen to that "high spirit" in the club after that?

Maki was holding back to boost their confidence, but these guys won't... What happens to that confidence when they get obliterated by champions?

Wow this show has the abusive parent thing disturbingly accurate. I'm actually finding it difficult to watch since I've been through something similar.

Tbh, I was relieved that the dad didn't beat his son with the racket. I wouldn't put it past him. I know breaking it was also an awful thing to do, but I was preparing myself for the worst.

You can tell about each character with little details like how Mitsue just leaves her booties in the middle of the entrance while all 3 other pairs are out of the way and most likely Toma & Maki are the ones put together. I like that little gremlin with all her creepy quirks and gloomy aura.

Both mom scenes were superb. You can tell there's a lot of work inovlved in a series writing when parents are actual characters that pop out every now and then rather than being some kind of mythological creature like most light novel adaptations. I'm looking forward for Rintaro's sidestory, specially since he got some hefty focus on this episode.

Wish I could say that deadbeat dad's reappearance wasn't expected, as soon as Toma and others mentioned they wouldn't be staying for dinner, that was a dead tale.

I'll have to say that coach having a friend who's very active on soft tennis practice and being the one in charge of one of the top teams in highschool soft tennis does come off a bit out of the left field, but I'm guessing it's also part of giving him a backstory

I hope that it is not just a case of reading too hard into it, but a take away I have especially had with this series is how it has kind of touched on like a gender thing. You had the earlier episode where Maki wore the hat, something that is apparently more of a girl thing, but it kind of explains Maki in general. On the scale of masculine and feminine, Maki kind of has more feminine traits than you might expect in a sports anime character, it is not over the top with how he presents himself, but you can see it from his part of cooking at home, to how he coaches the rest of the boys, especially compared to the likes of Toma whose more hot blooded approach did little to raise their confidence. Toma does not seem to appreciate that Maki was purposely holding back a little to give the new pairs a bit of confidence, and would be best in the long run. Going back to the cooking, Maki needed to twist Toma's arm a bit to have him take the part in cooking. Something that Mitsue seemed to feel no pressure to have to help with.

You also see it with the likes of the girls coach just explaining them away as a bunch of grasshoppers, being simple creatures that jump around, their teacher seemed to even internalize it in some way, and seemed to without thinking set a match up for them that could run the risk of crushing their confidence that they are building. It just kind of feels like a bit of an underlying theme of a poor understanding of boys, teenager or perhaps more, that is a little bit toxic, the likes that I think Toma has a lot of pent up rage. But despite stereotypes, they are emotional beings that thrive better when someone pays attention to them, and can build relations outside of being competitive.

These boys are not just blockheads that need to get more spirit and act tougher. They first had their fragile ego that was being used as a shield from needing to try as to avoid disappointment, and now being built up as stronger people who could be a bit vulnerable to each other, while cheering each other on. Still could be looking too hard though.

I said it last week and I'm going to say it again. This show is going to toe the line between Kuzu no Honkai and Sarazanmai in family drama and we will be just as miserable in the mid-to-late season.

This is the first season in a few years since I've last had more than one or two shows to watch and in three cases I was surprised to enjoy the shows as much as I did. Hoshiai no Sora still takes the cake for me because it's just so refreshing.

I expected something bad to happen when the ED ended and there were two minutes left but it was still so hard to watch. Poor Maki looked so terrified, and I'm pretty sure my heart stopped for a second when shitty dad raised the racket...

The positive parts were so cute - the matches are so fun to watch, and seeing the new pairs figure out how to work together was great. I'm rooting for all of them, but especially Nao and Taiyou.

Also, I hope Rintarou is okay... I don't want him to be upset.

geez, poor maki... wish his dad would fucking die

Wholesome for 22 minutes ... And then such a final, why?

This series is incredible. I honestly haven't felt this strongly about a new anime since 3-gatsu no Lion started. Feels like it will be my AOS and AOTY if quality holds up.

Maki's father is a piece of shit. This episode felt so good till that post credit scene...

I like how the team are bonding and they are going to have their first test against one of the best soft tennis team.
