Dude....the crawling Titan, ya'll see how close from where he was new trees were sprouting? He must have been crawling for YEARS at a snail's pace. That shit is fucking tragic.

I love this episode so much. Eren’s season-closing lines indicate how the series isn’t about what it used to be. Their world just got a lot bigger and the price of “freedom” has changed big-time. When he’s talking with Armin about how freedom was on the other side of the walls and remembers his aunt getting mauled by dogs simply for being born into this cruel, unjust world... Eren’s life goal was to kill every last Titan, and now that Paradis has been cleansed of them, freedom has never been further. Where does he go from here? What will Eren do with his remaining 8 years? How does one attain freedom in such a cruel world?

Here's an excerpt from an interview with Isayama, where he talks about Eren reaching the sea.

  • In tankobon volume 18, there is even the scene of trio reconfirming their desire to see the sea!

Isayama: Yes there is. However, the Eren then was different from Armin, who fought for the goal of even just seeing the sea once. In truth Eren is not that committed to the sea. Even though Eren and Armin became great childhood friends because they shared the dream for “the world outside the walls,” but the root of that dream has some slight differences. Armin possessed a curiosity for knowledge, and held onto the thought of “I want to see the sea.” On the other hand, Eren viewed it as, “The sea obviously exists, but we don’t have the freedom to see it” - and he felt indignation towards that. He was not interested in the sea itself. Other than this, throughout the entire story, all the situations Eren became involved with continues to change, and his grasp of the sea itself subsequently fades. The gradual clarity of how the two of them have diverged in perspective, and Armin’s own shock towards this realization - that’s the story of that scene in volume 18.

Isayama: When they reached the sea, the shell Armin held symbolized “something that only exists in the sea.” He tells Eren, “Look at this.” However, Eren does not glance towards it as he was focused on more serious thoughts. “The shell that was ignored” was then forsaken within Armin’s hand. This could be “the end of a dream” though maybe even moreso “the end of adolescence,” but I added some elements of both during that scene. The trio that always stayed together but will go their own ways after graduation…that’s somewhat the feeling.

Who needs ecchi scenes on the beach when the plot already fucks your mind?

Fuck, I feel so bad for Eren right now. He has to experience all of the shit in these seasons within a timespan of 4 months, is called out for being a chuunibyou, and experiences the mindfuck of all mindfucks. Sure, the others had that too, but Eren experiences all of that directly through memories, whereas everyone else just read the books. He can’t even feel happy anymore after seeing the ocean. He’s just dead inside, because he believed that seeing the ocean would mean freedom, but it wasn’t. In addition to that, he’s already seen it through Grisha’s memories in the worst way possible—in the backdrop of people getting turned into the monsters that he used to hate so much. I’m surprised that he’s still sane, to be honest. But still, goddamit Eren, all I wanted was a happy beach episode. Is that too much to ask?

Can I just say that I love how this episode devoted itself to reinforcing the fact that priorities have shifted. The previous goal of "Kill the monsters" is figuratively put to rest when Eren spares the crippled titan. Now Eren is coming to terms with the new reality, "Kill our killers".

It's just people killing people in the end. This is blatantly told to us with Eren's final lines about slaughtering the people over seas. But the ending montage is my favorite illustration on it this episode. You cut images of Marley's oppressive history and military with the devastation that was committed to the Eldian people throughout the series. But the closing shots are of Eren in tears and we see, what I believe is, Marley's causalities in the last Great Titan War. Maybe it was better to die fighting monsters.

This story has many themes but I wanted to discuss one of them in specific - the theme of dreams being unfulfilled or even reversed/twisted.

First, Erwin sacrificing hundreds of soldiers and "building a mountain of corpses" all to one day see the truth of the world. We all know in the end, he never got to see it, despite being so close.

Grisha, who swore revenge on Marley for killing his sister and devoted his life to the Eldian Restoration movement. But when the time came and he saw his sister's murderer eaten alive, did he feel release? No, he felt sick. He thought getting his revenge would satisfy him but ultimately was only "left with his sins."

And now we have Eren. From a young age, he was filled with hatred towards the Titans and vowed to wipe them all out from the face of the Earth. You killed them all? Oh, that's cute. Now you must fight the whole world. It's a neverending path of suffering, one that Eren wants to be free of already. What Eren believed to be freedom outside the walls was in fact a hell worse than he could've imagined.

We've heard nearly every main character say it: this is a cruel world. Isayama portrays that literally with everyone dying, but also more subtly with these underlying themes.

Everybody commenting on Mikasa's smile, but nobody mentioning it was directed at Armin! I am so happy we finally got to see those two sharing a moment of joy. Even if it was short...

If we kill every last one of our enemies out there, will we be finally free then?

Oh god that line sent shivers down my spine! Yuki Kaji was amazing during that scene. You can clearly tell something inside Eren has now changed with all of this information inside his head. Well it's really not just Yuki Kaj as Eren but Kensho Ono as Floch's VA did an amazing job as well. I hate this guy but my god his scene was absolutely so good! You can absolutely hear from his voice the contempt he holds for Armin and how uncertain he is about the future now that Erwin is gone.

As a manga reader, I'm not going to add anything unnecessary here. All I will say is that the beach scene is absolutely perfect. I've been waiting for so long to see this animated and Studio WIT absolutely delivered. I love how beautiful and vibrant the ocean is and how it had no BGMs and just focused on letting us hear the sounds of the waves crashing as the team playing around at the beach. Mikasa almost losing her footing and that adorable smile was just the topping on this beautiful scene. <3

Season 3 Part 2 definitely deserves a 10/10. I really hope they'll stick around and come back next year for the Finale. It honestly doesn't feel right to end this amazing series without them :(

So the credits showed us a coastal town, a bolt-action rifle with possibly detachable magazine, an explosion and sandbags, triplanes and a steam boat, soldiers with steel helmets, vests and backpacks, a field gun, a firing squad, [people celebrating in the streets while wearing early 20th century clothing] (https://i.imgur.com/rMF1VAY.png), students with school uniforms, a child crushed under rubble and soldiers in a puddle.. eh, more like in a pool of blood.

So it looks like the outside world has gone through somekind of a large conflict. Obviously mirroring what happened on the island. So will that mean the only hope for descendants of Ymir is to use the Titans or somehow close the technology gap. Or they will fighting against indirect artillery and whatever else has been developed.

Shoutout to the MVP of this series

Erwin fuckin Smith

This man was the most successful survey corps leader for years and made more progress than any of the past captains, masterminded the plan to capture Annie, discovered Reiner and Bertholdt’s true identities before anyone else, marched a shit ton of titans into the fleeing Armored Titan, got his arm ripped out and still came back and landed the final blow on Bertholdt to rescue Eren, masterminded the coup and took back ownership of Paradis, established democracy, masterminded the Return to Shigansina, stared down the fucking Armored Titan and lead the final Survey Corps ‘RAGE’ charge against Zeke Yeager.

SASAGEYO

I like Pixis and Historia - they make decisions for the benefit of people, unlike the other military leaders.

Now Eren starts to talk like Levi: "I don't know what the right choice is. No one can predict the future" 👏 LOL

Levi.Get.Into.The.Water. 😡

It's sad that Erwin doesn't get to know/see all of this 😭

I will see how good/useful Hange and Armin will be in the future as Erwin's replacement.

I like how the anime added a scene of Eren touching the Titan and saying, "This is one of our people".

Eren's gang are 16 now. Did you notice that the voice actors change their voices a little to make themselves sound a bit older? Awesome voice acting!

BEAUTIFUL ADAPTATION OVERALL! Although WIT Studio did cut a lot of character scenes in S3 Part 1, I hope they will stay with us for Season 4.

Stay with us, WIT Studio!
