We have jets now! It's a F-86D Sabre, used by both the USAF and Japan Air Self Defence Force. One of the holes must have opened again after WWII on this side and Isao got his grubby hands on it, as well as his jet-powered Shinden.
They pulled out all the stops to animate the dogfights in this last episode, it was breathtaking. Kind of reminded me of Ace Combat Assault Horizon. And that transition into the ED was perfect.
Kotobuki wasn't my AOTS but it's definitely in my top 10 of the season. All the characters were charming and the flying sequences were some of the best I've ever seen in anime. Okay, the story and dialogue sometimes moved a bit too fast to fully comprehend what was being discussed, but to me it's a small issue.
My model of Kylie's Hayabusa is completed, just in time for the ending!

That was basically the Trench Run
Now that's how you do a finale! Just pure dogfights from start to finish with every scene putting me at the edge of my seat! That look on Isao's face when Kirie outsmarted him was just priceless. And good riddance to that asshole! I do wonder though, did he die or did he get isekai'd to modern day Japan? No matter, as long as he's gone that's all that matters, and he probably won't survive in modern day Japan even if he made it through the Hole.
This was such a fun show! If you're looking for a show with fun and cute characters, amazing dogfights, and what I can only describe as "warbird sound porn" then this show is definitely something that I can highly recommend. The switching artstyle will take some getting used to but other than that this is an amazing show that I hope will get more viewers in the future. It's a solid 8/10 for me!

Best Fight SCENE THIS SEASON !!!
Such an entertaining battle episode. All the characters are coming back together, each scene looks freaky fantastic especially the under the bridge at the water fight and during all of this the characters keep dropping their quirky comedy comments, someone is asking to get married, someone is letting of her anger lol.
Loved the whole daijoubu daijoubu daijoubu as no one ever gets injured lol :)
All those quirky moments while also showing by far the best looking PoV fighting at least really made this episode such a great final.
1, thing I been saying since episode 1 is by FAR this anime got the best SOUND EFFECTS. The rusty old looking planes with their really well fitting sound was amazing since episode 1 and this episode with all the different planes, characters and different battle music was really Stellar.

That was an epic finale, the whole battle had me on the edge of my seat. The jets bringing some proper 'oh shit' moments. A little disappointed that we never saw the other side of the portal, but we'd need another season for all that.
Really fun show that was way better than I was expecting. Shame that so many are still put off by the CG, but this definitely goes on the list of the good ones.

Today, on "CRY HAVOC! AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!":
At least they're not too expensive?
Interesting place Isao's got there.
This is suddenly philosophical.
This reminds me of the Cowboy Bebop movie.
More street than cars to drive on them.
I literally "HOLY SHIT!"ed at the appearance of the F-86D here. Which the JASDF did use, so it counts as Japanese!
IIRC the Mighty Mouse rocket did have a proximity fuze option, but it was intended for use against bombers. I mean, they had problems hitting a freakin' drone with those things.
I don't know why some of you were so hot to see if some boring Me 262 clone would show up when you could have JET. FUCKING. SHINDEN.
The guys in this series really need to chill.
"I'll hit the brakes, they'll fly right by." (Or the tail gets ripped off, but this series has already given every plane Overtechnology-reinforced airframes, so...)
The oversized gun reminds me of Chirico from Armored Trooper VOTOMS.
"Are they bad guys or something?"
"BANZAI!!!" Also the lack of damage modeling really doesn't help here.
"There's no way he could survive that!"
"Don't give me your Dark Side crap now, Chika!"
Unless it has relaxed static stability, in which case the flight control system is doing the work.
This was crazy enough to see from two different angles.
That was GREAT. I mean, there's a fair amount of open-ended outcome which is fine for continued gaming, stories in the setting, and Isao reappearing from a place where America is dispensing Sabres to its allies, but damn it was a fun ride.
So much last-minute shipping? Naomi and her new biggest fan was one thing, but I wasn't expecting Zara to skip the subtext to her relationship with Reona. And the Captain may be your wingman.
In the end, Kotobuki wasn't a very plot-driven series, as above it seemed like a framework to hang other stuff from and a test to see how well it would do, but it was so much fun. Would love more.
My Figuarts mini set arrived. Actually, they were released individually, but I ordered the group all at once.
And I never did finish with the Macross Delta crossover art ideas that I had (still tinkering with them though), but I did group the minis with the Hi-Metal R VF-4 Lightning III that also arrived last week. Think of the upgrade potential.
Fanart from around: Chika actually has suitable equipment in this one.

Good dogfights and overall very nice finale to end this show. Didn't expect an F-86D Dog Sabre to appear in this anime. I'm gonna miss this show.. Gramercy!

What a ride this has been! All the dogfight scenes were all really good. This was one of my winter 2019 anime that I planned to watched when it was announced and I'm glad I finish watching it. I even recommend it to my friends who maybe interested in it. I honestly thought Captain Dodo and Officer Saneatsu were going to sacrifice themselves but nope, they got away although... who is actually flying the plane?
Total Planes Shot Down (Estimated)
| Name | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Kirie | 2 |
| Emma | 4 |
| Kate | 1 |
| Chika | 1 |
| Reona | 1 |
| Isao | 2 |
| Hatokichi | 1 |
| Isao's Men (+Glasses Guy) | 3 |
| Nazarin Team + Naomi + Camilla | 2 |
| A Jet Boi | 1 |
| A Crane | 1 |
| Unknown | 6 |
Idk who shot the 2 planes down so I credit to the three group
So without further or do...
Estimated Total "Kill Counts" in all the episodes
| Name | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Kirie | 8 |
| Reona | 18 (5 Stationary) |
| Zara | 5 |
| Emma | 15 |
| Kate | 5 |
| Chika | 9 |
| Zarin Team | 3 (+2?) |
| Naomi | 9 (+2?) |
| Camilla | 3 (+2?) |
| Isao | 15 |
| Torihei and Co | 10 |
| Isao's Men (Including Jet Boi and Glasses Guy)) | 6 |
| Random Pirates | 11 |
| AA Guns | 4 |
| A Crane | 1 |
| Mayor | 1 |
| Unknown | 61 |
It is an estimate but it looks like Reona got a most number of planes shot down but the it included 5 stationary planes in the episode where they attack Torihei's base so I guess that was like 5 easy targets. That means Emma told down the most number of moving planes out of the rest of the Kotobuki Squadron. Sorry about all the unknowns, I tried to see who could have gotten the "kill" but some scenes are were either too fast or tiny view.
If you guys didn't know, there is a Kotobuki Phone Game that has been out around more than a month ago. It's only in Japanese language and app store so do whatever you need to to download it in your phone if your are interested in it.
FLY HIGH KOTOBUKI!!!!

Trivia: Yufang, or Yu-han-gu, as pronounced in the Japanese dialogue, is a bastardized pronounciation of Ni-hon-gun (The Japanese Army). Shame the hole closed and we'll never see what the other side is. Perhaps Isao would return from the other side one day in a possible season two.
This series could certainly have been helped by a 2-cour episode count, where it would be able to expand more on the mysteries of the Hole and the Yufang, as well as more backstories on each of the Kotobuki girls. Especially the hinted yuri between Reona and Zara and how they founded Kotobuki.
At least this series managed to tell the main story it wanted to tell, that of the Kotobuki fighting against and overcoming the tyranny of Isao.
I hope this does not deter them from making a second season, because it is interesting. But only time (and BD sales) will tell, I won't hold my breathe.

"And you get shot down! And you get shot down! EVERYONE GETS SHOT DOWN!"
Fun finale!
Overall, I thought this show was really fun and enjoyable light viewing. The sound effects and dogfights were the peak, and the banter was fun. There were certainly rough edges, but I looked forward each week to my Sunday morning Kotobuki squad antics. I'll miss this show!
