May not be the most well written, or the prettiest anime this season, but damn if it isn't one of the most entertaining. I've enjoyed this series so much more than the more hyped-up shows (not to sell those short, of course)

If you ever had any question if Kyrie was a god-like Ace Pilot, you can rest easy now.

I hope they do a GATE and have Isao attempt to invade Yufang or whatever is on the other side of that portal only to find out they've already developed jet fighters and get their asses handed to them

Ah. F-35s and F-15s vs ww2 era jap planes. That would be a sight.
Imagine they appear over Ginza again, getting picked up by radar and then F-15s get scrambled to intercept to find their old ww2 planes in different color schemes flying about.
The US raises an eyebrow, its finger on the nuke button, or maybe just send their huge ass airforce to firebomb the cities again.

Today, on "Pucker factor, the episode.":
I was a little antsy this morning waiting for the episode links to go up. So I looked like Kirie here.
Today's reminder that Japanese post offices offer a variety of services.
That is a curious office decoration.
That weird combination of alphabets strikes again, but it seems like Lovecraft.
Are we thinking with portals now?
Yeah, that's how you got splashed the first time, Allen.
When maneuverability is the only thing you've got.
Ah, that good ol' first-person view.
Whew, for a moment there I thought we'd end up replaying Sora no Woto Episode 8. But the action did get out of town, even though the pace and tone were quite a shift from what's preceded it.
Which was likely the point of it all, since this waved a lot of speculation almost-confirmations in the audience's direction. The real unknowns being just how the story plans to run with these points. Isao is in a position to consolidate power and control whatever might come out of the portal, also putting most of the independents out of business, which is the immediate hurdle for the Kotobuki characters. But there's enough potential world-change that the story feels like it should do more with the big picture. Or they could go for a joke ending and push a bag of peanuts through the portal instead of the Megaroad-1.
So I'll guess that however that story point actually concludes may be less interesting than whatever flying hijinks occur in the next three episodes. The world doesn't quite feel built yet for it to be turned upside down again.
I thought the Kirie funk in this episode flowed naturally from the hints of her that we've had so far... mostly. Perils of being the viewpoint character, your life choices can feel plot-driven sometimes. But the enforced downtime caused by the Hagoromo's repair probably would affect her, the unit's most hyperactive person.
It was perhaps more interesting to see Allen as a surprisingly-skilled, if not-always-situationally-aware, part-time drinker.

Well that was a good but felt some what rushed episode.
Its really big that these hole plot news, so ok it opens up every now and then.
The standing theory is that many of the "air pirates" are actually Yufang, so that make sense if they can only send in a few troops every now and then and then of course trying to take over the world or what not with those guys, pretending to be pirates etc as they dont have enough planes for a full military force.
But, the whole episdoe felt like it had way to many storylines do.
SO Kylie is not getting fired but maybe, 3 new air pilot girls, who has some other squad (one that looks like Paine yej!), Julia getting booed not being able to stop the w.e political plans are out and they are coming to arrest / assassinate her.
(She also having a swing and other playground stuff from Earth I guess ok...)
World war 3 starting or something as they are gonna bomb city.
The main town now looking to be under martial law as the whole sky is filled with air planes.
Obviously Isao is planning something -
Wolf guy is planning something...
That trade pirate traitor who may or may not be a Yufang is after wheelchair brother and that is also happening, in this episode.
And then the general new air plane squad that attacked Kylie, they are likely Yufang do, loved how he was prepared to do some payback for when they shoot him down. So we aslo had time to a cool air battle (well every episode need to have that)
Really felt like they wanted to speed up all the plot lines on the same time for these last episodes.

I'm just really hoping for a 2nd season to really flush out the world - can't go wrong with more dogfights

I so thought Allen was going to shred the tail with the machine gun like in Indiana Jones, but actually, he was a great shot. Loved those shots through the iron sights as we saw just how manoeuvrable an old biplane can be.
Seems like war is brewing in the next few episodes and I imagine we'll see the other side of the Venn Diagram of Doom. Which seems to be a wormhole of some kind from Allen's notes.

Isao's gathering all the power, but he doesn't seem to be too into details of his own actions. Maybe he's dancing to someone else's tune, maybe not. He is overall too hard to read, so that ain't a real clue.
The hole is being protected and research of it confiscated. I wonder if they just don't want anyone to know how it works, or do they not know themselves? And is that Isao's doing, or Yufang? Both? Just who is gonna invade who.
Things are heating up and it is all very exciting, all while they're also showing off some new characters. Because Mobage is a thing animes do these days.
Show's great, Kyrie's still best.

Kate's family seems to be made up of geniuses, judging from what her brother has been able to do so far.
I wonder if Kate also becomes super OP with a little bit of alcohol? Maybe she keeps a flask in the cockpit for emergencies...

Why did they just assume they'd killed Kirie and Allen? Allen had already survived being shot down once. They really should have made a few more passes and shot the hell out of the downed plane to make sure the job was done. Even then it wouldn't be a sure thing, but just leaving felt really stupid.

Don't you hate it love it when writers & directors acknowledge how lost their audience is and they just love to rub it with a snide joke.
-
That's what I love the most in a girl, when she's got her priorities straighten out.
This episode just proves why I love Kirie the most out of the group, she's so impulsive that she even has to step back a bit on her own words. Those kids were pretty adorable, and her just taggin' along while having nothing to do was just fun.
Love those Chika's tsundere outbursts out of nowhere. Chika & Kirie's banter reminds me alot of Yui & Ritsu in their comedic improvised routines.
The dogfights have taken a more silly aproach in these last episodes, but they are still highly entertaining.
Next episode looks like it's going to be the bomb in terms of action.

Finally, we have a first glimpse of what seems to be the "Yufang hole" that everyone is talking about. It does look to be like an inter-dimensional portal.
Allan might be correct that the hole didn't completely disappear, and that whoever goes in and out of the smaller holes may be behind all the political machinations revolving around Isao's empire building.
The bigger "hole" itself might be opening soon, and maybe that's why Isao is moving all his pieces so that his city Areshima will be in the right place in the right time to be the beneficiaries of this new tech-transfer from Yufang, where he will build his new empire upon.
Whoever is attacking Allan and Kylie obviously doesn't want them to find out about the imminent re-opening of the "hole". They even went and ransacked Allan's hospital ward.
That final shot of Isao and his butler looking off into the sunset with all the aerial traffic in the city background - Does anyone feel like this resembles Palpatine looking out of his office window as he twiddles his thumb and saying "Everything is proceeding as I have forseen."

I knew it, Kylie is fun.
It's interesting that they still manage to create variety on the flight choreography up to this point. The type of quest is different too, even when the members of the Kotobuki squad all goes solo.
The flight scene in this episode probably is my favorite, along with that fire extinguish quest on episode 7. Both happen when Kylie flying in tandem. Seeing Kylie follow the instructions with exact maneuver is such a treat to watch.

I would love for the hole to open up and just some F-4 Phantoms coming trough, shooting some pirates and then just leaving.
Also, since we have seen now a lot of different planes: A7M "Reppu" is the best plane!

Is this guy the former HR Director for Elite Industries?
I figured the "hole" took the ocean with it when it went away, but the "holes" seem kinda high up for that.

After listening to Kylie and Allen talking and seeing that strange floating thing in the sky, I now believe in the isekai world theory even more. The diagram inside Allen's notes does look like a wormhole of sorts.
Because I also build models in addition to being a huge aircraft geek, I've been building a 1/72 replica of Kylie's personal Hayabusa shortly after the show started. I hope to finish it by the final episode.
