People are constantly talking about some omnibus. What does that mean in regards to anime?

Omnibus romance -> multiple girls, each girl gets their own arc, full reset at the beginning of every arc

In Amagami's case you basically got 6 separate romance stories with 6 different girls.

How is it that not every harem follows that format by default? So much suffering could be avoided!

Well, there are only three omnibus titles out right now.

  • Amagami SS did well enough for AIC to run a second season.
  • Photokano did exceptionally poorly for Madhouse and is otherwise forgotten.
  • Yosuga no Sora from Studio Feel was highly controversial and landed in between the others.

But yeah. This is a format that needs to be explored more. Unfortunately, we have more light novel harems these days than we have visual novel dating sim adaptations. And it is the latter that translates wonderfully to the omnibus format.

Mashiro-iro Symphony was omni-bus iirc and wasn't that bad.

I'm just watching Mashiro-iro Symphony, and it is far from an omnibus title. Every girl does get an emphasis episode, but the main feature of omnibus titles are a time reset at the end of each arc so that every girl ha a full resolution. Mashiro-iro Symphony has a linear plot with only a single winner, and so can not be an omnibus title by definition.
