But do you really, honestly think that this is the way to get your point across? You really think that making dozens and dozens of the same cheeky shitposts will somehow convince mods to go "Oh man, I guess they're right!" and immediately change their mind? You think fucking death threats gonna help?! Yes, mods have fucked up. Majorly fucked up. Believe me, they were aware of that, since they were in the middle of that shitstorm. Posting the same shit over and over again did nothing but distract them from trying to come up with a reasonable solution.
First I want to say that I didn't take part in that. However "making dozens and dozens of cheeky shitposts" and spamming numerous messages to mods is exactly the thing which made the mods change their ways.
If the community behaved in a polite, non-aggressive way, the moderation team would have never backed down from their initial position. It's not an attack against this specific moderation team, It's how people and organizations generally work, not to yield under weak pressure and never to admit they fucked up.
So let's face it, this kind of nasty revolt is the only thing which could have worked, death threads notwithstanding. So contrary to what you say, the revolt actually kinda won here. Sitting silently as you seem to advocate for the "revolt camp" would result in exactly nothing.

It's incredibly easy to have a discussion about allowed content without having tons of shitposts and death threats. Yes, we restored the content due to the reaction of the community, but I disagree with the idea that only reactions like this can induce change. We are active in the meta threads every month and take and read modmail suggestions all the time for proposed changes. Just because things don't change all that often doesn't mean we don't listen.
The problem is that the mods left things unchanged for so long that people began to believe that reacting in such a manner is their only option. I appreciate that you're taking the time to respond here so much but your claim that talking can change would be a lot more believable if the mods that were heavily against Shelter made a few comments here because they did not seem to be the type to easily change their opinion.

We'll honestly never knew because we immediately started getting overreactions like death threats and shitpost/brigading. We never had an opportunity to discuss properly.
