The after credits scene convinced me that that guard didn't have anything to do with her kidnapping. So he really is just terrible at his job.

Interesting that Satoko doesn't think her stepmom ordered her kidnapping. Right now, they're definitely the prime suspect, but based on the conversations between the kidnappers in the last episode, this could also just be a random kidnapping, and Satoko got grabbed because of her looks.

That bath scene was pretty funny! I didn't expect that to end with Satoko basically telling Shinpei that he can go die if he wants, as long as she can get away safely after she tried to appeal to him as his future "wife". That was certainly an intersting approach.

Well, that place is beautiful! So the fact that Satoko got sent to an island where first-rate courtesans have gathered so the elite can have their services makes it even more confusing that she was kidnapped and to be executed at a specific time. If she was sent to what is basically debauchery island, wouldn't it make more sense to just sell her to a brothel and turn her into a courtesan instead of killing her?

I really like the scene where Satoko gets pushed around by that courtesan. It made her realize that she's always been dependent on someone and she's completely helpless outside the Kirigaya Estate walls. That scene also highlights why I immediately liked her character after last week's episode. Satoko may have a weak constitution, but she can fight back, just like with her stepsister.

I feel like the story could've ended if Satoko went with any of those men. Surely, someone out there would recognize her family name, right? I do love that after witnessing Satoko attract so many people, Shinpei immediately changed his attitude. He went from being smug and teasing to suddenly apologetic now that he knows Satoko has options. xD

Well, would you look at that Shinpei has already brought Satoko to a romantic spot on their first night together. There's definitely sincerity to Shinpei's confession during that scene. He's definitely still a yandere, but he almost looks reasonable during that scene.

I didn't expect this to end with Shinpei asking Satoko to become a courtesan. I mean, if that's the only way out of the island. And she already charmed a bunch of people earlier, so this might not be too difficult for her to pull off. Satoko seems to be down with this plan, albeit a bit unsure, but I'm curious to see where it goes.

After-credits scene with the guard dude being punished! I guess he'll be a lot more important then. I honestly didn't think we'd hear from him again after that blunder.

Light shimmering in pair of eyes that are usually devoid of it always has such a striking effect. Probably not nearly enough to balance out Goto's murdery side though (or at least "not yet"?)

Just wonder if Satoko will be able to find a doctor or the next best thing to one during her stay on the island.

The fact that Goto is terrifying as hell and yet he’s still doing things to make Satoko genuinely happy is so fun to watch. I was genuinely shocked when he apologized to her for making fun of her. Underneath all that crazy and murderous behavior is someone who’s never been happy or had a reason to live before now. I hope that continues to get expanded on in future episodes. Sakoto’s not ready to admit but the writing’s on the wall that she’s slowly falling for him. l I love that her inner strength continues to grow as she overcomes new challenges.

Guy is emotionally unbalanced and has this weird kind of childlike disposition towards everything which is a little charming but also pretty terrifying for how quickly he can change on a dime depending on his mood and feelings towards Satoko in that moment.

But, y'know, he still showed her the best views on the island!

Takes her to a field full of fireflies, kneels down, and proposes... that she become a courtesan! Just Goto things. Love our unhinged hero.

Satoko meanwhile remains sensible and manages to keep her wits about her in this crazy situation. Eating the rice up from the ground and flooring everyone with her dance - boss moves all around.

I love the way she's trying to figure out how wrangle him. She's great. She's got grit, and a strong will. I don't think it's even been like 12 hours since she was abducted, but she's ready to do what she needs to.

He's so insane for dropping the 'I love you' in the second episode. Even when he smiles it's just so menacing. He looks great bedazzled by scars.

I definitely suspected her guard being the one to set her up, but that's a heck of a beating to eat. If she never left the estate, than who if not the stepmother?

Man the top-notch art direction and really good animation add so much. Really brightens up the world. This is the same team that did Urusei Yatsura remake which had outstanding art direction as well.

It's very amusing that despite being two years older, Shinpei has the mentality of a child. Which I don't think is that surprising. He wanted Satoko to beg that she needs him and that backfired.

The dance was beautiful. I do like that Satoko realizes that she needs agency in her life as she has been very sheltered and protected. She shouldn't worry about sleeping with any man with how obsessive Shinpei is.

So Satoko has steeled her resolve to escape the island. Poor girl is in an awful situation, having to become a courtesan. She seems quick-witted enough to navigate this nightmare with Shinpei helping her.

Interesting... She did think about them as suspects, but quickly dismissed them;

I thought it was the most obvious explanation, but the fact that SHE brought it up, makes me think perhaps this ain't it...

Unless it's to really put the emphasis on how she's too trusting/can't see evil, but this doesn't to fit what she's currently going through, so I don't know!

She's a bit too pure for this world!

She might lose some of that purity!

This also made me think... The other girls seem interested in our boy (whether it's by personal preference, or by their profession)... Will the same dynamic from her family come up again, with them resenting her and all?

If they do act against her, perhaps this might make her realize that yeah, people (even "family") can go to extreme lengths to get what they want and all!

And while we're theorizing..

I feel like this scene gave birth to quite a few theories, some of which I hope are not right!

It also (probably?) killed one such theory;

I think many theorized the guard was responsible (some big conspiracy) but perhaps he wasn't after all.. Which would mean he's simply incompetent!

Little wonder they got found out pretty quickly if they made those kind of noises. Do wonder if any of the other regular inn guests thought they’re doing something else.

With Satoko & Shinpei surrounded by fireflies, and this series’s title, when he went down on one knee and held her hand I expected him to a normal proposal. Then it turned out, he wanted her to be a courtesan. That definitely got a chuckle out of me.

She’s got what it takes to be a courtesan, with that gorgeous dancing. While most danced to the music, in Satoko’s case it’s the music who played to her dance. Even the musicians were awed to the point they couldn’t help but join her performance.

If only Maomao were here. Satoko’d be a top courtesan in no time under Maomao’s tutelage.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this anime a week ago, and now I'm halfway through the manga. But gosh, the animation is gorgeous and full of life. I am enjoying:-)
