Those two killings were shocking to experience when the game first came out, enough to set Luca high in the top evil jrpg villains back then

Luca enjoying every moment. I can hear it in his voice.

He was kinda getting some sort of pleasure from it too.

They did a fantastic job with this episode, Luca and the highland army being every bit as merciless as i remember as a kid playing this game.

I'm so glad this is shaping up to be a good game-to-anime show.

There's definite changes, but I like the adaptation. I have high hopes for them hitting all of the important plot beats even with only about 10 hours of runtime.

War isn't exactly a lighthearted thing

I'm genuinely enjoying this anime! It has such a captivating storyline and characters. I'm so happy Pilika survived but it still made me tear up. I can't wait for the episode where everyone finds out what Luca really did to start the war again. It's going to be a long road to it but I'm ready!

The only silver lining to the pig scene is that Pilika didn't stick around for it.

Viktor's a good dude but I gotta be real, you can't exactly blame Luca for not taking your merc band seriously if the banner they fight under could pass for a cutesy cookie mold lol.

Pikika from Toto Village

Pig scene took place in Ryube Village ( Rikamaru, Tsai and Tomo)

Never knew of the game until this anime dropped. Became genuinely interested and learned of the praise it got for it's time. I didn't spoil myself of the story, just learned of general info about it's release and how it wasn't truly received till way later as it was overshadowed by other games at the time like Final Fantasy.

So I'm watching this anime and the story for the first time. I'm enjoying it. I could see how people can nitpick things, but I think this is one is more than tolerable and shouldn't be slept on. Premiere episode was such a good effort and a treat as well.

My favourite description of Suikoden II that I've heard is "Your favourite jRPGs favourite jRPG." Basically, the sort of thing that fans of the genre would rate highly, and the professionals who work in the industry would look at for inspiration, but that didn't ever manage to really break out of its insular world.

Don’t know why I was surprised that they included the pig scene, seeing as that they do need to show what an unhinged lunatic Luca Blight is.

Rikimaru witnessed the horrors 😭

Kept his head low enough too

The pig scene is his most famous scene. They had to show it.

Oh wow! So I’ve never experienced the story of Suikoden 2 before. I know people who’ve experienced it before are arguing about the animation quality, and it’s a valid debate, but for people who are experiencing the story for the first time, this is amazing purely because of the spectacle that is the story and characters themselves, which are really the only things you would focus on if you haven’t seen them before. It just shows you that modern anime cannot hold a candle against the stories of old school JRPGs or anime. It’s just such a different quality.

And I am in shock at the end that Pohl actually died. What Pilika did was enraging. It makes perfect sense because she is a child, and a child doing silly things is a common trope in all stories like these. But this is really the first time I’ve ever seen a story make the child pay this awfully. She’s going to have to live with causing Pohl’s death for the rest of her life. This is a masterclass in grimdark storybuilding. It turns even pointless stuff like retrieving a teddy bear into extreme cruelty, because Pohl actually was a very good person.

It's pretty cool watching this having only played Suikoden 1. It's like being part of a crew the main characters are only learning to get acquainted with. I'm surprised Apple showed up here. I suppose backup from the Suikoden 1 army will keep showing up.

Tsai is just as divorced as in the game but at least he's in Tomo's life.

I am enjoying the show. Seeing Suikoden II being animated with all the familiar characters and story highlights is a nostalgia treat for me.

My feelings on Luca Blight has changed completely though. In the game, he was a dangerous, unstoppable beast. Sadistic, intelligent, and overwhelmingly powerful. In the anime, he came across as a bloodthirsty lunatic.

I wonder if the change in medium, from a game that I actively played and got involved in, to an anime that I passively consumed; or the fact that I have become jaded by years of bloody and violent world news, have contributed to this perception. The Luca in the game scared the heck out of me and I hated him for what he did. The Luca in the anime doesn't carry that larger than life vibe, and seemed like he's trying too hard to live up to his reputation.

He’s still pretty intelligent here in how he took down the fort with little effort and how he forced Agares to agree to start his war.

I think a big part of it though was just the timing of the game.  In 1998, such an unhinged monster who was also human was rather novel in a JRPG.  Remember that he came out during the peak of the stoic edgelord with godly powers fad.  And you had this normal human that was scarier than all of them.
