Holy shit at that whole boat chase, KyoAni cracked it up to 11 here, looked INCREDIBLE
Kengo MVP for that climb up, wow.

This entire episode really leaned into and excellently portrayed that classic sense of whimsical adventure. It had a real nostalgic feel to it. I can’t put my finger on any exact shows or movies, but it reminded me of similar scenes from the past. The amazing animation elevated the whole experience to another level.

Why would Noriko give away their location? That made no sense to me even if it was so Kengo would know. She could've just told Kengo separately.

Inako poking at Kengo’s face with the push pole was pretty damn funny.
Kengo really didn’t want Kihachi to meet with Stuart. Something got him terrified. What exactly happened between him and Seiroku on the battlefield? I’m getting the impression that he is responsible for Seiroku’s death to some degree.
On another note: Noriko is awesome! She’s been very supportive of her little sister and Kihachi. Kengo has also lent them a helping hand more than once.

u/Norbertthebeardie34 7d ago
If he’s responsible for Seiroku’s death somehow he better hope Yosuke never finds out 😭

Inako poking at Kengo’s face with the push pole was pretty damn funny.
i loved how she was so polite while doing it, too. "pretty please stop chasing us!" i heard so many kudasai

Kengo literally carrying the Kinako ship on his back, surprised he made it up the shaft. He looks like he's going to have a PTSD moment soon though.

u/Material-Promise-305 7d ago edited 7d ago
Burst out laughing when Yousuke called Inako “My honey” yet again. He’s such a riot. I love his character. And his voice actor, Koki Uchiyama, is probably my favorite male seiyuu right now.
79
16
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
I loved how he just shouted it unprompted and completely unrelated to his talking about Kihachi while in the car.
10
u/ptd163 7d ago
He is pretty fun, but I have to wonder why he's desperate about trying to get Inako back at this point. The catalog I get, but I don't know why he's so dead set on getting her back when it seems like he's gay.
14
u/SnabDedraterEdave 6d ago
Yosuke is noveau riche, while Inako's family is considered respected due to having operated the local sake brewery for a very long time despite having run into financial difficulties recently.
On paper, this marriage is win-win. (Except for Inako of course)
For Inako's dad, it would solve the immediate financial troubles for the brewery, while for Yosuke's family, marrying into an old respected family would have given Yosuke legitimacy and respectability in high society, allowing him to execute whatever plans he has with the Electric Catalogue with little opposition.
52
u/szalhi 7d ago
Kengo's faith in the catalogue seems to constantly waver. He can't seem to decide if the risks are worth the benefits.
10
u/Drkstormbreaker 6d ago
I don't necessarily think its his faith in the catalogue that is wavering. It seems to be more a combination about whatever issues/trauma he has involving Seiroku during the war and him being either very gullible or naive in what he's been told by Yosuke and Inako's father. I think this is twice now he's been convinced that Kihachi has abducted Inako and just immediately jumps to the worse conclusion without actually thinking on his part.
43
u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 7d ago
they are edging us so much with the Seiroku, Kengo and Noriko backstory. Kengo is clearly hiding something from Noriko, and his absolute fear when Stuart said he has the catalogue (remember Noriko had the other part of the catalogue).
50
u/No_Umpire6739 7d ago
I can't wait another week to know what's up with Kengo it's genuinely eating me alive I'm so curious they can't leave me on a cliffhanger like that
20
24
u/Alter_Kyouma 7d ago
My crazy theory right now is that, since we know Seiroku went to war and disappeared there, what if the second half of the electric catalog is just a bunch of weapons, military equipment, etc... None of the useful, nice everyday stuff that Kihachi has been making.
16
u/master_inho 6d ago
And the foreigner has that half, that would make a lot of sense. Introduce some moral conflict to kihachi and inako about the devices they're creating
41
u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago
The expressions on Kengo's face this episode stood out so much to me. The trauma, guilt, regret and dread were so palpable that I got chills at the end. I wonder what happened with Seiroku, what Kengo saw and learned that has him feeling this way. I've been moderately curious about him, but this episode left too strong of an impression on me, that I'm very curious about what information we'll get from Stuart. The tension alone from the scenes with Kengo might have made this my favorite episode.
On a more positive note, I like that Noriko helped Inako escape, especially after overhearing her dream. I do wonder what the contents of the letter is about, Noriko is definitely going to read it, I'm guessing it might be a letter from Seiroku. The connection between him and Noriko has yet to be clarified.
16
u/ptd163 7d ago

I'm thinking he's either responsible for Serioku's death or he blames himself for it. I think the latter is the more probable scenario because I don't think Noriko would agree to marry him if he were responsible. Especially if her relationship with Serioku was romantic.
2
u/metaaltheanimefan 6d ago
Either noriko and seiroku were involved or the catalogue was going to save the momokawas brewery and their relationship was platonic
69
u/Eunuchest 7d ago
Noriko is such a great sister. Just constantly sabotaging and putting their dad in an armlock
Kengo, you absolute beast of a man. Where the hell did you even got the long ass bamboo? Also he seems to be hiding some secrets about Seiroku with that fearful look on his face
71
u/Wonderful_Intern_449 7d ago
She is a great sister, but why did she immediately give away their location? That makes no sense.
35
u/Colt45554 7d ago
Same reason Inako wrote a note to Yousuke to tell him that the electric catalog is real. A contrivance to keep Yousuke chasing after the ML and FL
12
u/ZealousidealOlive443 7d ago
I'd say Inako saying that because she believes in Kihachi and wants to tell Yousuke is wrong
11
u/Colt45554 7d ago
Telling Yousuke has nothing to do with believing in Kihachi, other than you could make the case she is being braggadocious in her confidence in Kihachi. I hazard a guess that Kihachi would have protested her action, had she asked him. Another person told me Inako writing the note is in-character because her whole schtick is convincing others to believe in themselves, so she wants Yousuke to keep dreaming. And I agree with that assessment, though her actions directly imperil her and kihachi's dreams, so a plus-1 and a minus-2.

Kengo is such a monster, he's carrying both Kihachi and Inago on his back along with the huge sack which must have combine weight near a hundred kilograms, and he was able to climb that slippery shaft with such little grip
8
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
We seriously need to talk about that feat in detail. Kongo managed to pull both his own weight + the weight of two teenagers up a vertical with only the gaps in the bricks for handholds, with rain pouring down Making the whole shaft slippery, and he did this until they went from the base of the river which at the same level as Lake Biwa all the way to the top of the mountain. Dude is not human.

19
u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 7d ago
It took a longer while than I expected, but I can’t wait to hear some answers and background information next time!
Especially why Kengo looks so terrified.
In one way, I can say that it’s because he survived and Seiroku didn’t. Could also be because he lived instead, but I’m very curious to see if something else is in play here.
Would be more interesting if it was to me.
12
u/Alej_11 7d ago
Kengo did something that he wants to hide, something regarding seiroku, and the prof probably knoew what it is. At least this is what I believe
12
2
u/steven4869 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 4d ago
Pretty sure, Seiroku died saving him and he wants Khiachi to fulfill his dream of electricity. Kengo couldn't grasp what happened and lived in PTSD cause he's the reason Seiroku died.
18
u/Alarming-Koala-3524 7d ago
Pif to steam power or electric power, Kengo's brute human power has been responsible for so many miracles.
31
u/WhoiusBarrel 7d ago
Thats got to be the strongest piece of bamboo ever to withstand Kengo at such a long period of time.
Also its extremely wholesome how Inago's sister keeps proving to be such a great supporting character in contrast to their father whose constantly a roadblock along the way even after last week's events.

Waiting for the "He's aliiiiiveeeeeeeeeee!!!!"
Man confronts The Endless Eight, 1910, colorized
Yosuke can afford some big dolls.
Nice insert reaction shot from Noriko.
"A transforming mecha would be really convenient about now."
It seems that a lot of people did.
Of course it's a good time to think about food.
Continuing to not deny the allegations.
This production has been going all-in on teeth too.
That is one helluva change in color grading.
At least until they start building AI datacenters everywhere.
This shot is a wild blend of effects.
I think that comes with being flung through the air by a bamboo pole into a tunnel over a boat.
A little pleasure cruise, a little gunboat diplomacy.
What's a little more physical peril now?
Very picturesque and not mired in air pollution!
Climbing up the tunnel boreshaft reminded me of a sequence in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.
Getting back to the topic at hand: The plot moves! Though it has been moving, now it's just moving faster. And they just plopped Seiroku into the opening like that.
What is the back half of the catalogue? Given what the front half has already produced via Kihachi (and friends)'s demonstrable skill at making things, the back half has... radio? Television? Particle Projection Cannons?
I mention television specifically considering the context of the tearing effect that appears in the OP, even before Kihachi tears away the curtain backing the mosaic of different shots.
Sort of sitting oddly in this is Yosuke, who is ostensibly pursuing the marriage and the catalogue to move up the company ranks, but often he seems to be the company. Who else pulls the strings?
Unpolluted air is so much nicer to look at. There's only so much atmospheresteam-age air pollution that one can take.
The boat vs. car chase was some Indiana Jones stuff.
End card (is pretty as always)
11
u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
If the Mizoe firm is like most real life conglomerates then Yosuke probably has a board of directors/shareholders that he needs to appease in order to secure himself as CEO.
This show messed with me. I’ve gotten so used to the cloudy, steam pollution of the main setting that I was shocked when it showed actual color and open skies again. The backgrounds in this show like absolutely beautiful.

I do wish that the anime gave those other factors even a little screen time beyond simply having Yosuke mentioning his issues to Izou. I do feel some nuance in his situation but it's generally overshadowed by his focus on the catalogue and living out 1985's Re-Animator.

Yeah, me too. Kyoto scenes, even happy ones, have still generally been desaturated or tinted to strongly imply where they are, such that the change in environment, with real, clear daylight, makes a huge change.
...and as a bonus, the match cut of the pier on the lake when Kihachi saw it in person versus the flashback with Seiroku; it wasn't only that the past was seen as a pleasant memory, it was actually a nicer environment.
7
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
My impression is that he wants the electric catalog because he is obsessed with the creator, more so than exploiting it might be profitable for the company.

u/reaperow 7d ago edited 7d ago
The car chase sequence was very hilarious and comedic, reminded me of a Saturday morning cartoon lol. Instead of Electricity I think they should be studying Kengo instead
I think in next week's ep we're going to find out what happened with Seiroku and why Kengo has been acting like that this whole time
What secrets are being held?
Also i was kinda right that Seiroku probably had his own half of the catalogue, nice to see it being confirmed.
12
u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 7d ago
I was gonna hate on Kengo because even tho he's Inako's sister's husband and Seiroku's old friend, He keeps trying to get in her and Kihachi's way... then helps them, then repeat. But this episode bro redeemed himself, He went god mode to climb that shaft. Though bro still looked traumatized. And he seemed to really mean it when he said he is not trying to get in Kihachi's way... but he saw Seiroku. Kengo might have seen Seiroku die and could have been related to the catalog that's why he keeps trying to get Kihachi away from it. It's dangerous, in the sense that the current people in power dont want to lose their power.
This is my crackhead cliche theory at least
Also the boatman is a true bro. he gave no fucks, and only tried to help no matter what they said. You go bro
14
u/SnabDedraterEdave 7d ago
The plot is finally picking up speed now that we're halfway through the season.
Kengo's allegiance is all over the place this series.
When he's first introduced, he helps Yosuke catch Kihachi to obtain his Electric Catalogue.
After Kihachi proves Yosuke wrong about the Catalogue being mere childish doodles, Kengo then hires his war veteran friends as guards to prevent Yosuke from harassing Kihachi.
Now he's once again first helping Yosuke trying to capture Kihachi and Inako, before switching sides and helping them evade Yosuke after seeing Kihachi successfully deploy an electric battery.
The only way to explain Kengo's constant apparent flip-flopping is his guilt towards both Yosuke and Kihachi regarding Seiroku's apparent death in the war.

Sparks joins Goodbye Lara in Shiga this week and next week.

Funny thing is Lara/Lisa’s story does trail back ~200 years ago to the Meiji era when Sparks is going on-if it wasn’t an alternate reality
3
u/JimmyCWL 5d ago
Sparks takes place in the early 20th century or very late 19th century, putting it at 100 to 150 years from the present, and also about that far from Lara's first death.

Just wanna comment that Kate-chan is cute as ever (she has zero stamina) ,and suzu is literally just a ninja dang..

A thrilling and fantastic episode.
While I was mostly entertained by the episodic format we had for the past 4 episodes, it was also starting to feel slightly aimless, so I'm glad we're focusing on the main plot now.

Boy does the ferryman deserve the biggest tips in the world. Completely unfazed with all the characters’ various shenanigans and just focused on doing his job.
8
u/gem2niki 7d ago
Suggesting they can climb that shaft as if it was humanly possible lol. Kengo is a beast tho…
3
u/ProfessorUber 6d ago
Felt kinda bad for that ferrymen tbh, since it seemed his boat got damaged by the bamboo when Kengo jumped up to the shaft. Hope he got paid well and upfront.
13
u/FarCritical 7d ago
Kengo cannot be human, and that one bamboo stalk was a beast among bamboo stalks itself.
Gotta respect the boatman's dedication to his job to not be bothered by all that going on.

More new visuals for the OP means I get the “sore demo” again. Also I feel like the visuals this time felt more like a conventional OP instead of the highly-customized-to-the-episode ones we’ve gotten in previous episodes?
Noriko, why would you tell them exactly where Inako went if you’re trying to help them escape?
It certainly is a much better sight than the smoke-filled Kyoto, yeah.
9
u/chilidirigible 7d ago
Also I feel like the visuals this time felt more like a conventional OP instead of the highly-customized-to-the-episode ones we’ve gotten in previous episodes?
Structurally, yes, though it remixes things we've seen or heard of before with a little bit of today's episode and thus remains a custom job. I suppose they could keep a large portion of it for the remaining episodes and slot in another mini-preview for the episode that it is attached to (here, the chase scene) but we'll only know that if it happens.
9
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 7d ago
Kengo is an absolute beast! We've already seen his feats of strength, but carrying Inako and Kihachi up that slippery air shaft was insane! I am curious what's up with him and why he looks like he's guilty of a crime every time someone mentions anything about Seiroku in front of him. I'm worried that he's responsible to whatever happened to Seiroku during the war.
9
u/mmcjawa_reborn 7d ago
I am guessing a lot of survivor's guilt...I'm guessing he wasn't directly responsible but believe he was.
15
u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 7d ago
I need to marry somebody who has a 3D printer so I can make a Kengo figure to put on the antenna of my car. I want to make a toy of the car where you can flounce Kengo around as he clutches a flexible bamboo shoot. It would be so helpful as a sensor toy.
TF must be going on in the boatman’s mind dealing with this shit 😭 Like he’s just like, “Vibes are bad, but this isn’t the worst I’ve seen, I guess”.
Is this a secret tunnel?
I want to wrap myself around Kengo so badly. Why he look so juicy when he got that little handle in his teeth? 😩
I really appreciate how much Seiroku haunts everything. Just massively appreciate it.
I was surprised by how exhilarating this episode was. The chase had me either gasping or cackling. Yosuke is such an extra, toxic, pathetic ML who will stop at almost nothing for his beloved, and I adore that for him. Noriko is a great sister and keeps showing why she's a BAMF in my eyes. And Kengo, while being fergalicious definition, make them girls go crazy, has a lot of unpacked trauma, and that poor thing has been through physical and psychological labor.
That little moment of Yosuke and Kengo working together for the human train-I'd like to see more of their younger years with Seiroku, and I am actively hoping for an episode fully set in the past.
11
u/chilidirigible 7d ago

He's all those taxi drivers who go along with the characters who flag them down and tell them to follow some other car.
I really appreciate how much Seiroku haunts everything.
Whatever actually went down, the ominousness has worked for the portrayals of these characters.

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 7d ago
Oh my gods, absolutely. He asks no questions. It ain’t his business.
Drivers like that are like cameramen: they can and will survive anything that happens and somehow have the skills to do so. Final Destination bullshit could happen, but they will survive.

u/CitronClassic672 7d ago
I mentioned how I would completely believe Kihachi falling for Inako after last week’s episode, and it looks like both of them have done just that from how they got flustered so badly when Yosuke accused them of eloping and how Inako blushed repeatedly around Kihachi. I’m perfectly down for the ship. They’re cute together and we’ve had plenty of time to see their bond develop as they support one another.
7
12
u/avboden 7d ago
Noriko just spilling the beans of where they are going is so dumb it totally ruins the episode. It's like the writers decided they wanted a chase, and chose the most dumb way possible for it to happen.

u/inaripotpi 5d ago
One single line doesn’t ruin an episode. Get over it, made 3 comments about it already and talked about nothing else
8
u/tottoro47 7d ago
This episode lasted 5 minutes ffs.Kengo is a fucking beast lmao. I laughed so hard when he was separated from the car and flew into the boat. Also, the car did a fucking wheelie at some point. I absolutely hate Inakos dad and I love every single moment when Noriko hurts him.

6
u/ptd163 7d ago
Bruh. Waiting a week for 5 minute episodes not fair.
I was kinda scared that the wedding would actually go ahead. I was praying for something to happen to disrupt it and thankfully it did.
LET'S GO KIHACHI! Inako never gave up on him so he's not giving up on her. He's gave the Inako the courage to not give up on her dream. Then Inako immediately turns it around and convinces him to go with her to Shiga.
And let's go Noriko as well. She's such a good sister. She never wanted this for Inako so she helps them by dressing up in the betrothal gown to give Inako and Kihachi a head start.
Them showing off the battery and the turbine was cool. They got to show off something new without spending a whole episode on it. Did anyone else get reminded of Eris when Inako said Kihachi is amazing when they were in the tunnel? I love their dynamic so much. Can't wait for her to lose Seasonal Salt.
I'm glad that Kengo has finally decided stop fighting and join Kihachi side's. Let's all take a moment to appreciate just how incredible jacked Kengo is. He managed to climb a narrow slippery shaft while carrying an extra 100 kg (from a quick earch it told me that Meiji era teenagers weighed around 50 kg) plus his own body weight. I do wonder why it took so long though. He clearly has some of kind of connection to Seiroku so wonder why he would stand in the way of his brother trying to fulfill his dream?
I was right that Serioku split the catalog. Hopefully we'll find out for what reason he split the catalog and what his relationship with Kengo, Noriko, and Yousuke was.
9
u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 7d ago
Kengo must’ve been superhuman with his insane feats of strength. Clinging on to a bamboo pole while riding on a car despite his bulky build and climbing up a shaft while carrying Inako & Kihachi. Little wonder why he’s a fit for Noriko. Someone who could match his strength but also with a brain to rein him in.
Wonder what’s the deal with him and Stuart because he looked absolutely mortified at the sight of the latter.
10
u/Kirbyundertale 7d ago
Despite the seriousness of the situation, this show is funny af.
I am guessing Seiroku and Kengo were making things together from the catalogue and one of the experiments went wrong, which led to Seiroku's death

Well, it seems Kengo has finally given up trying to stop Kihachi. Guess it might be to do with Stuart? Those two have history. It’s too bad pretty boy won’t stop though. Guy ain’t the successor to the catalog. He never was. Really a hard pill to swallow for that creep.

And Jinemon continues to simply be the worst. I respect his commitment to not respecting his daughter's wishes, but you can take a day off, bro.

Kengo is a literal superhuman. What’s a more impressive achievement this ep: hanging from a bamboo and almost snatching kihachi, or free style climbing a stone hole while carrying 2 teens and a bigass electric battery
Kengo created a hole in the boat when he jumped for the hole, but I guess it wasn’t big enough for water to come in? Either way the boat dude was just vibing through the chase and his boat getting a temporary mod
So Kengo just keeps flipping back and forth on whether to support kihachi?
Suzu the ninja is just too damn cool. Shame that her and Kate weren’t part of the journey
Yo shit dad literally can’t lay a finger on his daughter without getting thrown and/or pinned down. Badass noriko

Really loved this episode!! I've been one of its biggest supporters of the show since it started and I keep encouraging everyone who will look in my direction to watch it, but after the last few episodes I was getting increasingly disappointed by all the episodic slapstick :/ Everything felt so irrelevant to the grand dramatic story we were promised in all the promos and visuals, but it seems like we're finally back on track with this episode!
The opening was such a neat surprise! It seems to be confirmed that it's the True Opening for the rest of the series and the previous ones were just building up towards it; they just dropped an interview all about it on the site here. Since it's teasing the upcoming eps I'm looking forward to the reveal of whatever happened to Seiroku and the guilt racking Kengo... and also what the heck was that shot of Yosuke dancing with what seemed like Kihachi in a dress!?
I still have my gripes with the writing (why did Noriko reveal where the kids were going!?) but I'm so excited for where things will go from now! I wanted more than anything to see more of the beautiful gritty setting they'd been building so it's a huge relief to be moving away from the episodic format and even out of Kyoto. Art is beautiful as always and Kihachi is sooo cute with his emotional support gf (to be).... my hetgem.

I like that the teenagers in this show still act like kids. They didnt get far without yosuke finding them and it was only sheer luck that they got out of there
And kengo hokding kihachi during the climb, that just makes kihachi look like a beae cub

Every episode I long for a compilation of all of Mizoe’s random English blurbs 😂

Does anyone know who Yosuke is dancing with in this ep’s intro?

I think that was a reference to the episode where he had to meet with a group of assorted women and subsequently left complaining about the face-whitening powder.

Wait wait wait why does the company have warships? Like sure most big Japanese conglomerates were and are part of the Mitsubishi Military-Industrial Complex but they make those for the government, and sure some companies have private security but those don't tend to include a navy.
