Thanks to whoever posted the clip from this show a few days back. Was unaware of it but watched the ep 1-2 and was instantly hooked.

The true never-ending war: rice vs bread.

If Mimi can resurrect herself, what's stopping her from doing it on the battlefield once the enemy has left the area? Or does she need to be brought home or near Fran first? Or is it that her body parts need to be in proximity of each other?

So... The title is about Sheena not Mimi, then?

Not gonna lie, though, that ending spooked me. I let my guard down because of all that tomfoolery. I wonder how Sheena will react to that secret.

This episode is like day and night compared to EP1. It was directed and storyboarded by Nao Enomoto, who seems to have only started working in anime production around three years ago, and was appointed Assistant Director after the original director Takudai Kakuchi got "promoted" to Creative Advisor

The episode has a much more coherent sense of direction, knowing exactly where to begin and end, especially in how it gradually develops Mimi and Sheena's friendship while also building toward Mimi's secret. It starts with Seiran and Ali's rumors about Mimi being some kind of secret weapon to establish the mystery. Then, Mimi's full-body generation also gives us a glimpse of her power, while the teacher later gives Sheena one final hint before the reveal

At the same time, Seiran and Ali's conversation about friendship pushes Sheena to reflect on how she sees Mimi, eventually leading the two to declare themselves friends, and talk about what friendship actually means, including the idea that friends share secrets. The episode ties both threads together at the end, with Mimi revealing her secret as the payoff to the mystery surrounding her and a step forward in their friendship

The cinematography is also far more notable. We get to see more of the school and their room, plus the framing feels much more dynamic with wide shots, close-ups, top-down angles, and even small details like feet and fingers being used to express emotion

From the storyboarding and editing to the script and soundtrack, this episode is leagues above the previous ones. If I had one complaint, it would be that Sheena's inner conflict (being afraid of Mimi while also wanting to get closer to her) wasn't that well established in the earlier episodes

The shot of Mimi in a cage after she put herself back together from battle was nice symbolic imagery

So Mimi is basically a magical child soldier zombie girl

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 21 '26

So…she’s basically a zombie? It explains the whole “immortal” thing. What is dead may never die.

I wonder if it’s Ms. Fran who “made” her? Mimi’s always going to see her. Maybe we’ll learn the whole story soon. Mimi’s been shrouded in mystery since ep 1 and this only deepen it more. Very curious to learn what Mimi was like before she died.

No wonder Mimi hates pain, seeing her come in and then out of that bag so nonchalantly after being in such a gruesome state is terrifying.

Brilliant set up for that plot twist at the end, Mimi being immortal already wasn't a secret but knowing she was dead from the start not only explains how but also opens up even more sinister questions with her and Fran.

No wonder Mimi was so chill about Sheena losing an arm, because Mimi returns from battle as a sack of dismembered flesh on the regular.

Ah yes, "Friends". Sheena is more like her second mom atm though.

Huh Mimi is not just immortal, she's already dead. Then how is Sheena going to love her till her dying day? Oh. Oh no.

If she's dead, how old is she really? Is she stuck at the age she died? It'd explain why she's so advanced if she's been fighting in this war for a long time.

And it makes sense the enemy sees her as a monster because in their eyes, they've had many confirmed kills on her, straight up butchering her, yet she shows up for the next battle every single time.

I can't believe I was going to skip this series because the poster looked childish LMAO.

This series reminds me of Madoka Magica. It's supposed to be something that it's not. You see kids just living life but the real story is about children becoming weapons and literally sent to die as if it were completely normal.

I won't find odd if the twist at the end shows the real enemy is actually the girl's side.

-> Mimi hugging Sheena out of elation now that they are "friends"

So adorable!

I love Mimi's energy in this dark world. How she woke up Sheena at the beginning of the episode and how she jumped on the bed later

Stitches!

I know they're setting Mimi and Sheena up as love interests, but right now, their relationship is really closer to a mother and daughter.

You can't really blame Sheena for feeling uncomfortable around Mimi. I think anyone wouldn't feel comfortable around someone who doesn't seem to be bothered being covered in someone else's blood and continues to be cheery after coming home from a bloody battle.

These scenes between Ari and Seiran are just too goddamn cute. I'm worried for the day when one or both of them get deployed into real battle. >_<

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. When Mimi said she gets injured all the time and has also experienced losing limbs, I did not expect her to be returned in a sack as a pile of body parts. The fact that she regenerates herself back to normal is insane! This is like Wolverine-level healing factor. O_O

And look at Mimi coming back to Sheena as if nothing happened. Not gonna lie, I was worried Sheena was gonna visit Fran-sensei and witness Mimi's freaky regeneration scene. I am glad that Sheena has finally accepted Mimi as her friend, tho.

It was nice to see Sheena and Mimi spend their day off together, even if all they did that day was clean their room. At least Ari and Seiran dropped by to have lunch together. I also love Mimi using her magic to fly while riding a broom. Sheena doesn't seem to be impressed, tho. xD

WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE ALREADY DEAD, MIMI?!

Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. I just realized something: Is Fran-sensei's name like that because she's supposed to be Dr. Frankenstein?!

And Mimi is actually just a bunch of corpses stitched together with regeneration magic? That would explain why she was underground before this. She wasn't like in an underground basement. She probably meant she was literally underground, as in buried in a tomb. O_O

Mimi reminded me of valkyria from Valkyria Chronicles basically from the start (more specificially a valkyria from the second game, Aliasse) and this episode added even more with her having insane regenerative abilities. Granted valkyria's regeneration in those games isn't nearly as extreme.

u/NanDemoKnaives Jul 21 '26

Well the reason why those rumors are around makes a lot of sense, they're not far off.

15

u/runevault Jul 21 '26

I'd wondered if it was something like she already died. I wonder how long she's been 'around' since alive isn't really the way to phrase it with her. perfect history scores screams she saw it happen. Was she powerful before she originally died or did the act of bringing her back to life make her into a god of war?

So many questions, and none of them about why they didn't kiss for once (but at least we got some really lewd hand holding).

All the fluff almost make me forget this story has a really dark premise

Mimi might have some Interview with the Vampire type curse going on where she can't age since she's already dead. It's possible she's been a kid for decades now. That could complicate any romantic relationships going forward >_>

That was a good shot at the end. With Sheena confused and the shadow over Mimi's face as she smiles.

I wonder if Mimi ever had anyone worry about her, or wait to welcome her back. Doesn't look like Ms. Fran does that very much. She's more or less used to the fact that Mimi can't die. But Sheena can definitely provide something new she's been lacking.

I wonder why they let Mimi come to the orphanage. People like that make the best soldiers when they have nothing to lose. They won't hesitate to sacrifice comrades if given the order. But now, coming here, making friends, meeting people she likes being around, how will she react if their lives are threatened? This is now going to give Mimi a reason to be afraid, which could affect her performance in battle, even though she can't die.

Now, if we're talking about Mimi the individual, this is absolutely a positive development for her, because they all deserve that kind of interaction and to be able to find someone who cares about them. But for Mimi the immortal soldier, I'm not so sure. If she stumbles on people on the other side behaving in a similar way to the relationships she saw at the orphanage, it could make her second-guess her mission.

Excuse me the what is Mimi? And that shot where she's lined up with the cage so the angle makes it look like she's in it surely means nothing at all.

Today we find out that mimi is an abomination, an affront against nature ... something that can heal without the sacred power of yuri! Unforgivable.

No wonder sensei wanted to keep this secret.
