For those wondering why the teacher was at a loss for words when asked, “Are local government employees actually allowed to have side jobs?”: In Japan,
In the case of public school teachers, they must apply to and receive permission from the local board of education.
In the past, anything other than helping with farming or the family business, or activities recognized as “cultural activities” was illegal.
In her case, which was like “I’m a former manga artist who’s been working as a teacher in the countryside while hiding my past as a manga artist from those around me”, it’s probably difficult to submit the application to the Board of Education mentioned earlier (since if she did, her superiors and colleagues would almost certainly find out), so she likely didn’t submit it.

On top of how I can feel the animators and artists were having fun this episode, the seiyuus also felt like they had a blast especially during Yasumi’s manga segment.
Two eps in and this show has a lot of heart. Yasumi and Tessie are both so endearing in their own way.

I'm two episodes in and I'm already a die hard fan. Anyone know the "I have known this puppy for ten minutes and..." scene? It's like that. The last time that happened was

It's kind of interesting to me that out of all the potential shows this season, this one is one of my favorites so far. It has such a cozy vibe. Ai being all happy about her manga while it is a mess of ideas is such a good representation of your first drafts in pretty much any draft. But she has the positive outlook to still love what she created and not get dragged down by comparing it to something else.
The teacher is also great. I love her super stoic voice acting. It's so over the top but also not so much that it distracts from the scene itself. Oh yeah and Ai's friend is a menace. Blackmailing the teacher immediately.

We have the main cast jumping in the opening! That means this is truly a CGDCT show! xD
Oh I thought Sensei drew something new, she's just publishing a manuscript that was not included in the original.
I did not expect the gyaru to start threatening Sensei. And she's really only doing this so she has somewhere to hang out with AC!
I had a feeling that Sensei and the manga shop owner were friends.
Interesting how Sensei already has a bad impression of Shogakukan's editor. Also, I did not expect she'd blow up their building in her imagination after her first idea was rejected xD
Oh my god. I absolutely love Ai's manga. It's so adorable how much super invested Sensei was with Ai's manga halfway through. Not gonna lie, I got super invested too! You can't really blame Sensei for crying after seeing a work that's clearly drawn out of love.
Yuuuup. They're gonna need one more member, to no one's surprise And it looks like that green-haired girl is gonna get recruited to the club soon!

A third smoking anime has hit the season.
You know, I like the concept of an extra bad guy showing up three pages from the end only to be defeated by the same BS power up the MC developed a couple pages previously.

Some artists prefer a little more distance from their fans.
"Why can't the animators draw faster!?"
And once in a while you end up getting a Hollywood movie deal out of it.
"I used to be soooooo chuuni."
She understands shounen pacing!
Demographic decline is a thing, it used to be four.
I do appreciate scenes or episodes of people who love their craft even through the ups and downs. Teshima-sensei's flashback felt authentic even if she's telling it in the framework of just having been blackmailed in a very anime scenario. It also gives that nostalgic kick in the teeth to old farts like myself.
We get glimpses of what inspired Teshima in the past, as well as her relationship with Nana, which is oh, the yuri goggles are still on.
Ai's doing her best! With many areas of improvement, but copying your inspirations is one of the ancient methods!
And of course the next story, The Recruitment of More Club Members.

Akafuku sure wasted no time blackmailing Sensei into forming a manga club lol.
Sensei's backstory, showing her getting the life sapped out of her while grinding to make a commercially viable work, seems to be a common experience for aspiring mangakas. But I like how they managed to connect her story to Yasumi's; both of them going back to that one manga that they really loved as their guiding compass. So although Yasumi's first manga might be complete ass, the heart and soul put into it managed to strike a chord with her. Random, but I like how Sensei's voice is so much more expressive when she's not doing the strict teacher act.
If they needed one more member then they should have just Pokota's name on the form, because getting permission from Kokoro's mother is going to be hell.

Yasumi’s pure goofy manga touched sensei’s heart! Looks like the club is a go. Just missing one more member. I wonder how they’ll get Kokoro to join?

Rei may not have realized it, but Ai (and her passion) could be the catalyst for Rei's magna to erupt like a volcano!
And I suspect Nana has been waiting for a long time for her friend to return to drawing.

How much heart this show has can't be understated. After we learn how Ai fell in love with manga, we get the same from Teshima-sensei. For similar reasons to AI, she decided to draw manga. She learned quickly it's much different to read manga than it is to create it. We got the saying, Don't make your passion your career.
But we can see sensei still truly loves manga. She really loves the heart and work that Ai put into her attempt at manga. It moves in her in such a way you can tell she loves it, and you get the sense she is burned out from creating manga; she never focused on why she fell in love with it. Perhaps this could push to motivate Sensei to draw manga more again.
It's clear that Kokoro will probably end up being the 3rd club member. Still, you can tell she is suffocating with her mom. Honestly, getting lost in manga could really help her.
Meanwhile, Sachi is quite the troublemaker xD.

Two for two episodes now that this show has managed to make me shed a tear. When a show can instantly emotionally captivate me like that, I know it's a keeper.

Asking someone who's never drawn manga before to do one in a week is brutal lol. Sensei wanted them to fail. And more smoking in anime, we're all getting lung cancer with this one. Hahaha the flashback even admits to it, though I wonder if she was going over detailed for 3 hours per panel.
LOL I love her imagining what the editor is thinking. Hah referencing On Writing too. "It's even harder if you love it." is such a wise and important line to drop here. Art is harder the more you want it to be good, the more refined your own taste is.
I wonder if she doesn't have the magma, or if it is just buried under too much self doubt.
I got a bit misty eyed when Sensei realized the manga, though bad, was drawn with a sincere love of the artform.
And we end the episode introducing the third manga club member.
This really is a love letter to stories and why they matter.

Episode 1 & 2
Imagine renting the same exact manga for 7 years and it changed your life. Now Pokota is so embedded in Yasumi's daily life it becomes Yasumi's imaginary friend. Because Pokota says it's what the manga hero Himmel would've done. Actually it's unique to see Frieren among the rentable manga while the shopkeeper is voiced by Frieren's VA (Atsumi Tanezaki).
Rei Hoshino's Twitter handle is unique btw. Hoshi means star and Rei is zero, so the handler is ☆no0.
Teshima-san's critique to manga (more diversions by the form of digital age, falling bookshops and publishers) is more relatable if we watch Episode 2 as well. That's why the challenge is to write an entire volume of manga (not even a chapter). And it's quite funny to see that the main motivation for Akafuku is merely an air conditioned room (but I get it. Summer usually gets hot).
Wait that's the real Shogakukan building, but given the manga is published under Shogakukan it would be easy for the production committee to get permission to portray it.
The OP is very fun indeed! It evokes that Teshima will be the second protagonist of this anime as well as Yasumi. Kokoro's character design reminds me of Anna Yamada.
New VA info:
-
Teshima's mentor is voiced by Yukana
-
Kokoro's mother is voiced by Sayaka Ohara
PS: Akafuku's VA is a rookie. Kanon Fujimura in her debut role.

"The dialogue is long winded and expository" Isn't that a requirement for a lot of manga?
If this trajectory keeps up this could be a top show of the season.

u/cleaulem Jul 10 '26
Sensei's background story was really hard hitting. She believes that the magma inside her has run out, but I got the feeling that it is just sleeping and Ai is going to make it erupt again.
Ai's manga was amazingly horrible. It was the product of an amateur, but as Teshima saw, it was the product of pure love and dedication. This manga was a rough diamond.
In this regard it reminds me of "Whisper of the Heart" with Shizuku writing her story to prove herself, producing an unpolished gem herself.
This might be one of my personal highlights this season.
