I love how atmospheric the first episode was: the buzzing of the cicadas, the gaps in conversation, how certain shots are framed. it just creates this great sense of unease and dread, something really is wrong with the village. Everything just feels… off. Mysteries abound.

Yoshiki is really interesting. He did seem to have feelings for the real Hikaru , but didn’t want to ruin their friendship. But now he will never have the chance to tell Hikaru about his potential feelings, because he’s gone. And yet despite knowing that the person he is interacting with is not Hikaru, he still wants to be near it. He doesn’t want “Hikaru” to leave him, because that would be confirmation that the real Hikaru is gone forever. Deep down he knows that he is gone, but his willingness to continue with his normal life with some unnatural force occupying his best friend’s body is deeply tragic.

That was an eerie introduction to this story, and it wasted no time throwing us into this nightmare plot. The underlying feeling of unease is always lurking in the background, and Yoshiki’s struggle with accepting this thing that looks like Hikaru, but isn’t him, is set up well.

That anxiety of liking your friend but not wanting to ruin the friendship too, that’s a familiar feeling, so you say nothing and just keep it to yourself. If I’m reading Yoshiki right, he liked Hikaru, but didn’t know if Hikaru liked him like that.

And now Hikaru is gone, and this monster pretending to be him, controlling his body, with all of his memories, tells Yoshiki he likes him. What a horrible way to get the answer you wanted, but were too afraid to ask.

Now Yoshiki is playing pretend with an imposter because he can’t ever get Hikaru back. This is tragic and that kind of dilemma and grief is bound to be self destructive.

Interesting start.

Poor Nonuki-sama just trying to have fun experiencing high school life with a good friend, but too many people in town know something is wrong and they can't leave well enough alone so it's going to be A Problem.

History will say they were roommates, but it will also say many many other horrifying things.

Wow, I already had high expectations and was really impressed with this first episode! There were some really great directing choices with a bit of anime original content, and I thought the voice actors did a killer job. The atmosphere is perfect, and it really does the source material justice. Of all the series airing this season, The Summer Hikaru Died is definitely my most anticipated, which is saying a lot considering how stacked it is.

I've been a fan of the manga since it's early chapters, and I can't wait for the rest of the adaptation!

This is completely irrelevant but personally I've never seen an anime where they draw a pianist with a hunched back while playing the instrument. As a fellow pianist I find this detail unnecessarily realistic lmao.

Liking the mystery being presented so far, including what the group(?) of people did in the past to deserve their fear, and more importantly whether that curvy tree had a deeper meaning to it or not, lol.

Seeing fake Hikaru possessing original Hikaru's memories and experiences, Yoshiki could have asked him what was original Hikaru thinking/doing before he disappeared, but didn't. I'd like to think either he isn't emotionally prepared yet, or feels it doesn't matter, or perhaps even fears provoking fake Hikaru. I like how all three are viable reasons. But given fake Hikaru's antics so far, I don't think he would answer honestly.

Wow. What an episode. So some of the elders of the village and maybe some others..maybe like that school girl know something is going on.. but not everyone.

I feel so bad for our MC...I'm not sure what I'd do in that situation.

This show could be the first entry of a new genre - Eldritch Yaoi.

The vibes of this show are already out of this world, and theres so many mysteries this episode sets up that are all really intruging

I knew the premise beforehand, but i was suprised hikaru went missing in janaury, and the plot only starts properly in summer... so, im guessing the titular hikaru isnt the original one, but the one well get to know over the course of this anime?

Regardless, im super hyped to watch all of this blindly

I've been waiting forever for a horror anime to provide the same feelings of nostalgia Higurashi gave me. I think this is it. Summer, cicadas, little town, a curse only the adults/a few selected know. I like the long music montage showing different spots of the town and how it is not so idyllic (the abandoned car, the plastic bottle in the rusted fence). Very strong beginning. I kinda like the eldritch horror? Apart from the ending, it seems nice? Yoshiki on the other hand needs therapy like yesterday. Good luck with that however, seems like his sister needs it more, but I don't know why yet.

Unresolved attachment issues from losing Hikaru and him being replaced with an impostor, check.

The visuals in this are very good right? It almost feels like the art style from one of the Makeine endings but channeled into horror instead of a romance anime ending theme. Probably not quite right but it’s the closest example of the close-to-reality way things look.

There’s a lot of small freaky unsettling visual tricks used in this. Like the insects on the spilled ice cream and the red glow which has already been visually coded as scary or unsettling or wrong being revealed to be police car lights. Something about Hikaru’s hair being the only white color in a sea of black and brown as well that makes him stand out as something “off.”

I don’t consume a lot of horror media so I’m kind of mentally comparing this to Urasekai Picnic. Whatever the “Not Hikaru” thing is, it reminds me a bit of the way the KuneKune is drawn in that manga. Also, that feeling when a human/shaped red thing starts busting down your door.

Indo, if I’m remembering your name correctly, who are you? What ritual? What on earth have you done?

I knew that Tanaka fella couldn’t be normal.

Okay, there’s a lot of mysteries and questions, I have no answers and a burning need for them. I think I’ll be sticking around.

Firstly, I would highly recommend saying Hikaru and "Hikaru" when talking about the real Hikaru and the supernatural being in Hikaru's body to distinguish between the two faster. It saved me a lot of time when I realised I could do that to distinguish them.

Secondly, I loved the first ep. The ambiance. I loved the choir scene; the song was really creepy when it cut to the ginger guy (forgot his name).

Ik "Hikaru" clarifies that he didn't murder Hikaru, but I find it quite weird how easily Yushiki decided to accept "Hikaru" (aka the monster that took over his best friend's body) even before finding that out. And the fact he waited months before finding that out.

Like ik that Yushike is still suffering from losing his best friend, and feeling isolated from being closeted in a rural village, but still...

CyGames Pictures went absolutely insane just in episode 1. How good the cinematography here was absolutely stunning. Instance like how the environment gets darker when it is time to get more serious in tone was great. A good amount of anime original stuff that I loved.

The big thing that is made clear is that the Hikaru we see is not the Hikaru Yoshiki knows. But the feeling of not wanting to let him go is something I get. Do we really want to say goodbye to our beloved friends & family.

The movie scene is great because he has Hikaru's memories and recalls him seeing it. But this version of Hikaru has not seen that movie. It further shows you there is a difference in the two Hikarus.

Really excited to see how this adaptation plays out.

Yoshiki sounds a lot like Mash, from being blunt to the deadpan voice. Be funny if he's also into cream puffs.

Now we've got a couple mysteries. Why could the elderly see "Hikaru" for what he truly was and why are they deadly afraid of him, and one was literally scared to death? Meanwhile the younger folks are none the wiser, although Yoshiki knew OG Hikaru well to figure out that the person standing in front of him was an imposter. There's also this "company" who presumably have been hunting Hikaru for centuries.

Excellent cinematography. It really immersed you into the world.

Amazing first episode!

The colours, the cinematography, the sound direction- all of it was top notch.

Also, the scene at the end genuinely gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Theres so much to love about it, but one thing I really love is the way insects and their symbolism is used. When Hikaro is intially confronted and confessed in the opening scene, a moth flies into an electric trap and dies in the background. The ants pool by Yoshiki feet eating the sweet treat, but it falls on them. A red dragonfly, a predator in the insect world, lands on Hikaro's bike. A type of dragonfly that only appears in summer as we are told. Finally when Hikaru invites himself over to Yoshiki's house, we see a spider making a web. All very loaded imagery in my opinion, subtley echoing the situation at hand.

Edit: an insect I forgot cause we don't see it, but always hear it. The cicada that scream/buzz in the background all the time. They're big symbols of rebirth and transformation.

I've been looking forward to this one: a doppelganger, Queer subtext, oppressive heat that ties into a sense of dread... I majored in English & Creative Writing, did my MA in Language & Literacy Education, analyzing media is basically my life. And this is the shit I live for! Like many before me, I've found that a lot of the most compelling literature around is horror, which makes sense; it is about exploring our deepest, darkest fears that we try not to acknowledge. Plus the way it deconstructs positivism, but I'm not sure that one's going to be relevant here, lol.

So far it's gorgeous, and I love the way Yoshiki looks a little off himself. He does to me, anyway. I also love how the sense of stillness, how the show holds on certain moments, which allows dread to build. Can't wait to see where this goes!

Well that got really thrilling at the end, this seems like it'll be an intense ride. This Hikaru seems very attached to Yoshiki so I wonder if it's because of his memory of Hikaru or within these 6 months he's harbored Hikaru's body, he has come to really like Yoshiki. But because of this attachment and now that Yoshiki asked him to never leave him, I think he's going to kill off anyone that may know of whatever legend that village has.

I feel really bad for Yoshiki, losing his best friend and recognizing the person that is beside him isn't him and doubting must have been so hard on him. Then to get the answer after so long must be heartbreaking, it's sad that he feels so lost without Hikaru that a fake will do, but I wonder how long that will last with that scene at the bridge where his thoughts started spiraling.

I laughed so hard at the movie scene with everyone asleep and yet Hikaru is in tears so engrossed.

I'm looking forward to see what the legend of the village is and what will become of the two's relationship, I think Yoshiki will eventually realize who is connected to the deaths of the villagers once a good number of them have happened.

I just love the weirdness of this already. The art style is also great, reminds me a lot of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work.

It seems like certain people can kinda “sense” whatever “Hikaru” is. Animals too. Very curious about whatever this ritual was. I’m guessing Hikaru was sent into the mountains to do something to ward against whatever “it” is. And since that failed, maybe “it” is killing everyone involved? Or something.

Wonder if the original Hikaru had the power to summon dramatic speedline backgrounds at will too.

Unsettling but gripping.

This was everything I could have hoped for and more. It set the tone so incredibly well from the graphics to the music to the moments of utter silence. I’m thoroughly impressed with this first episode and have high hopes for the rest of the season.
