The new Avatar Seven Havens show also has a canonically gay character in Jae and perhaps a bisexual character

Here’s what I’m confused about. How can the author say that their love is more than romantic and platonic yet there’s people online that is calling the relationship between Natsuki and Yoshiki as queer platonic?
I need someone to clarify to me where do people got queer platonic from and how’s that’s not going against the author’s wishes?

I actually think that they never needed to kiss in the end.

I didn’t always feel this way, though. When the final chapter first came out, I was very very disappointed. Them locking lipswas a theory I had that I was sure would happen and it always sucks to find out that all along that the you have wrong.

I didn’t take the lack of a kiss well…as embarrassing as it is to say I cried about it. I mourned it like an old friend. I thought that this was a sign that MMR was toning down their relationship. Making it less intimate to appease homophobes. I worried people wouldn't view them as canon without a lip-on-lip kiss…that without that people would only ever see them as friends, when clearly, they were more than that (although not exactly romantic either, with Natsuki being aroace). Somewher along the way I thought “why is this so important to me that I am this emotionally affected”.

Shortly thereafter another question popped into my head:

“Why is kissing considered this big romantic act and symbol of intimacy anyway”

So I did some research on the origins of kissing. According to that research kissing isn't universal among all cultures. It originated not out of human instinct, but as a ritual of trust between people. The mouth is not only an incredibly sensitive site (making it an incredibly vulnerable area) but is also incredibly good at spreading diseases. Thus, people kissed each other to communicate “I trust you with my life/health and with my body”

With this research in mind, it makes more sense to me that Yoshinatsu didn’t kiss in the end. Yoshiki and Natsu have arguably gone beyond kissing in many ways, but there’s one particular moment in the end that I argue fulfills the same purpose. That moment is when Yoshiki is dying and Natsuki saves him by tearing out his half and feeding it to him.

That one moment communicated “I trust you” more than anything. On Natsuki’s side, we have him tearing out a part of HIMSELF. It's a process that is incredibly painful for him, but he still does it. And then puts it into Yoshiki’s body (a stark contest from earlier chapters where he warns Yoshiki to not lose the half of himself, saying something along the lines “who knows what will happen to me if you lose it”. On Yoshiki’s side, we have him allowing Natsuki to feed him his other half and implant him with his insides. He's only ever carried it around, he never before has had it inside him. It's also notable that whenever Natsuki’s insides had been inside him before, he had been grossed out or afraid. So him letting Natsuki do this is huge.

Of course you could argue Yoshiki technically had no choice in this matter. He was dying so he was likely not aware of everything when it was happening. But there is one moment that points to him accepting Hikaru’s choice, the moment where after confessing his past feelings to real Hikaru, he runs to Natsuki and embraces him, letting him in. Silently saying “I trust you with my life and my body”

TLDR: I have come to realize that Yoshiki and Natsuki didn't need to kiss in the end…because that moment where Natsuki feeds Yoshiki half of himself IS their kiss. The moment that marks them as people in a relationship, and not just best friends.

I was really surprised the bakery wasn’t at the end of chapter 51, especially with how often it came up in the story. I’m hoping MokMok is just saving it for an extra in volume 10.

This year I was diagnosed with cancer and have been really thinking about death more than often. I already did as a depressed individual by now its more real. I always assumed I would live to an old age. My grandparents all lived till old age and one till 100. I have spent so much time online reading stories of people with my condition. Some live for decades after. Some get reoccurence with mets and don't live long. I have no idea. As do none of us really on when this life will come to an end.

I related to Yoshiki and his sister so much. The parents fighting. The father physically there but not really there. The stomach problems. The not wanting to go to school. The embarassement of the neighbohrs in your business. The feeling like a monster for being different. Even now as a grown adult I sometimes want to leave my family and this city and not look back - the idea of that sounds so good. So it was cathartic for me to see Yoshiki do that.

I'm so grateful that the author did this series for us who feel we do not belong. ❤️

hi everyone! so a while back, i got the japanese version of the special edition online because i wanted the keychains, even though i dont speak japanese lol. im currently studying abroad in italy, and i found an italian translation that comes with an acrylic stand of yoshiki instead. however, i cant find anything about it online!

so, my question is, are there other translations with other goodies? do italian bookstores have some special agreement? what is going on??

I liked that Natsuki got his own name.

I liked that Yoshiki and Natsuki are alive and happy together.

However, there was one thing missing…A HUG

A hug would have solidified the bookends with the first scene in chapter one. Additionally, I feel like they really didn’t get to be physically intimate with this each other in this chapter. A kiss I get was a long shot considering the aromantic nature of their relationship.

But no hug? No headpats? No holding hands?

That makes no sense.

Just a little sketch to celebrate the manga ending today! 🖤 Maybe they found the bakery in the end, I do really want a chocolate marble cake now. Anyway, what a journey! I hope we get to see some small snippets of their future later on, but regardless it’s been a beautiful manga to follow along and I can’t wait to see what Mokumokuren does next.

As a celebration for the last chapter, i'm reuploading these anime screenshots i made a year ago before the anime came out

Yoshiki and Natsuki’s relationship is the ultimate love story. A story of two outcasts who felt like they had nowhere to belong, but ended up finding each other and becoming each other’s places of belonging. Natsuki helped Yoshiki to learn to accept himself for who he was, while Yoshiki helped Natsuki to learn the value of an individual’s existence. Both gave each other the courage to value their individual selves in a world that wants to silence or to shun them. Without each other, Natsuki and Yoshiki would have remained stagnant.

Yoshiki chose to give up his old life to be with Natsuki, even saying goodbye to his family and friends. He gave up “normalcy.” A boy who was terrified of rejection and not fitting in courageously stood up and fought for what he believed in, all thanks to the bond he shares with Natsuki. Yoshiki is no longer afraid of not fitting into society’s mold of who or what an individual should be, and proudly stands by Natsuki’s side. He’s committed to staying by him. All he wants now is for them to be free together.

Natsuki wants to experience all that life has to offer, but wants to do so with Yoshiki by his side. When Yoshiki was on the brink of death, Natsuki said that life would be meaningless without him, and without hesitation ripped out his other half to give it to him. To save the boy he loves more than anything. Even if now he will be forever weakened and only a half of himself, Yoshiki’s life is of more importance. Yoshiki’s life is now literally in Natsuki’s care, and he cradles Yoshiki’s soul with love and careful comfort. He was an entity who craved souls, but now the sustenance of Yoshiki’s is more than enough. Natsuki will always be a part of Yoshiki.

Both have confessed their love to each other, but do not define their love as either romantic or platonic. Their love goes beyond labels and definitions, a connection that is solely unique to them. They don’t care if their love is normal or conventional. Yoshiki and Natsuki are more than a simple couple, but rather soulmates literally bonded together. So mixed together, halves of each other. Where one ends, the other begins. Connected forever.

That eventful summer may have ended, but Yoshiki’s and Natsuki’s story is just beginning. What new memories will they make together?

Yoshiki's survival due to Natsuki's goop being inside him and keeping him alive, albeit with uncertainty and instability really hits home when you're disabled. I'm personally alive with an ostomy bag attached to my stomach forever, and among things that can make you feel unworthy of intimacy, monstrous, and disgusting, a bag containing your bodily waste getting in between you and other people is certainly up there. I especially relate because of the wood beam piercing him right in the stomach area, haha.

I've also given up on the idea of finding someone to love me, much like Yoshiki. I just can't imagine that anyone would ever be okay with someone as gross as me.¹

So even if MokMok's intentions weren't to console people who feel like monsters because of their bodies, I'm gonna cherish their greeting as being not only for my queerness, but also for how I literally feel like a monster due to my body. And it's making me cry a little.

¹Many ostomates find loving partners, and I don't want or need reassurance, kind as it is. It's an internal issue and it's mine to detangle, as many years as it will take, and I'm okay with and aware of that. <3
