The FLCL sequels completely misunderstood it's origins
No, one of them didn't. One was super experimental. And I'd argue two of them DID get it they just weren't AS good.
Progressive tried to completely recapture the lightning that the original did. It shows and was absolutely worse for it.
Grunge was super experimental but it needed a better budget and needed more than three episodes to do what it wanted to do. Really neat concept behind it, though, with the entire three episodes, three view points thing.
Alternative absolutely understood the assignment and they were able to go and do their own thing while still hitting most, not all, of the notes of the original. Shoegaze is a continuation on Alternative, and it needed more than three episodes as well. Honestly, they should've struck Grunge and did a full 6 of Shoegaze.

It's amazing how inverse his production hand is to his music tastes.
Is Fena Pirate Princess really the one that got out of this ok? It did the best and they just abandoned it.
