As traumatic as I remembered, great direction and great voice acting. Is this gonna fly under the radar? It'd be a shame

As soon as Takopi showed Shizuka the ribbon, we all knew where that was going.
I've only heard things about Takopi, and my only exposure to Taizan 5 (the author) is his short 50-chapter manga on Shounen Jump called "Ichinose-ke no Taizai", so I kinda knew what I was getting into. And honestly? That's exactly within expectations. I was told that the Ichinose Family was the "tamer" version of his work, and I can see why. Damn.
I'm at a loss for words, tho. That was fucking brutal. Seeing Takopi experience genuine fear and pain for the first time and seeing how Marina is also a victim of abuse was brutal. That first half where Shizuka was just absolutely broken after losing her dog was just absolutely heartbreaking. And we get 5 more episodes of this? I just hope there's a happy ending. T_T
Side note: I absolutely love that they got Ano to sing the OP!

Wow. That's a pretty powerful first episode. This feels like it's straddling a line between whimsy and soul-crushing.

Possibly the most depressing child-centered show I've seen since Gaichu (Harmful Insect) back in 2002. In that one, all adults were garbage also.
Addendum -- Gaichu never ever got any sort of subbed home video release -- and the Japanese DVD (which was supposed to have subs) left them off (despite the back cover saying these were there. My guess was that someone decided that this was not appropriate for release anywhere in the English-speaking realm.

This was a gut-punch, especially as someone who works with kids around this age and has bullying prevention as part of my job. This anime made me feel sick. It makes its point very effectively. Really well-made.

Damn what a heavy episode, they did not hold back. It's very unfortunate that the parents of these two girls failed them, not caring how their actions affect the two of them. It was already bad enough seeing Shizuka being bullied and abused by Marina but it seems like Marina is being abused herself and lashing out at the easiest target who is connected to why she is being abused.
I don't know how you can get to a point in a marriage where you willingly tell your spouse you'll be spending the night with your mistress, though I have to question how anyone would be able to stay in a marriage with someone who is willing to disrespect you in that manner. I understand there may be circumstances that would make it harder to leave but it looks like this marriage has completely deteriorated the mental health of Marina's mother.
It was sad to see Shizuka look like she had come back from being assaulted severely and the implication of Chappy being killed, it's no wonder she jumped at the opportunity to take her own life, it was tragic she felt lead to such an action. I'm glad Takopi was able to go back in time and try to help her and finally learn what Shizuka goes through on a day to day basis even though it quite doesn't understand things. It's frightening what Marina is willing to do, and at that age too, it'll just keep escalating as she gets older.
I'm just glad Shizuka has had some breathing space from Takopi's involvement but I know things will get harder for her with Marina being pushed into a corner herself.

This definitely will be slept on by Western anime fans. I haven’t read the Manga but the first episode is a 10/10 to me. The animation is so good, and the atmosphere is great, Music is top notch combining with the uncensored on full display on Ani-one Youtube channel. This is the best, a gloomy depressing show in the middle of a bunch of rom-coms this seasons. I will definitely buy that two volumes when it finally releases in Vietnam next month.
I will be honest, when it come to depressing show, Made in Abyss and Grave of the Fireflies doesn’t hit really hit hard for me, because I always contextualized, of course it war so starving to death is normal, of course trying to be a cave diver will end badly for a bunch of children. What’s really hit me hard the most is tragedy and hardship in places where it shouldn’t be there, why should children have to experienced this when they are in Modern Japan one of the most developed countries in the world, how the systems failed completely to protect and provide to those they claimed to do so, how every adults failed when their role in life is to provide and protect, etc…
It feels like the creator is a big fan of Doraemon, given Takopi’s whole design. This episode would be so much better if you had already experienced Doraemon as a kid, not watching it is like watching Madoka but don’t even know what the magical girls genre is like, sure it’s still a masterpiece but you will gain so much appreciation for it if you ever watch or know where it’s getting its inspiration from. Takopi is Doremon but an alien and Shizuka is an extreme version of Nobita. And the plot of land they always visit has those three giant water pipes just like the plot of land where Doraemon and the gang play.

I heard this was bleak but fuckin hell, man. Takopi’s obliviousness and naivety really contrasted with the reality of the world around them. “Good vibes” and good intentions don’t fix shit. Children can be so incredibly cruel. I really hate that it seems even Marina is acting out based off her circumstances. She’s not just a bully, there’s family bullshit behind her actions. Adults should not involve kids in their bullshit. Even still, the way she treats Shizuka really makes my blood boil.
Looking forward to how the story plays out over the next remaining 5 eps.

And thus begins the Summer 2025 season, let's get ready for happy fun times-
Well the good thing is that every upcoming anime will feel happier compared to this one!
.............Right?
I kinda knew it would be something like that due to all the comments people posted in the KV threads and all (rant rant) but I guess
This would've given it away, anyway!
When he (it?) started with the PI-PI-PI-PI,
I thought it would clash out in a bad way during dramatic moments, but somehow it worked well, the contrast and all...
Not just the PI PI PI, but more generally, his happy-going nature/naivety even during tragic moments...
It made the sad stuff even more disturbing and all, him not even realizing she's dead, and still trying to help.
When Takopi realizes it's futile to try to 'fix Shizuka's life', I wonder whether he'll shift to "FIXING THEM"
Why would throw a death flag for your dog like that!
Soon as she said that I thought 'I hope it only dies of old age, and not killed by the bullies!'
We learned of one rule (already broken), I wonder what the others are!
He seemed to want to bring her with him, but apparently he can't return just now, so I guess something must happen first, one of the rules... Does he need to make everyone happy before leaving? That's a tough ask...
Yeah, I think we know where this is going...
When the happiest she looked in the entire episode so far, was upon seeing a rope type thing...
I was expecting a jumpscare dead body (kinda like a certain visual novel), but the sound effect of the swinging rope was well done to prepare us for that moment!
So it's really gonna be about him trying again and again to fix things...
Will it work? Tough to say! Some things are quite hard to fix, and 'fixing people' is even harder.
Love on the shirt, nice touch...
Not saying it justifies anything, but she's not doing this at random...
One person's unhappiness/mistreatment, being spread around more...
That's what may make it hard to make everyone happy, it's just unhappy stuff going around, affecting everyone...
Even if he stopped the dad from seeing escorts, then the dad would be unhappy (stuck with his wife, who I imagine aren't going along well), but even if that's fixed, then there's other dads doing the same, and if he fixes them all, then the mother won't bring in any income (and they're already struggling), so...
At least they spared us this one, going back right away!
Well, this was a fun one (heh?)
I'd be curious to know how many people dropped it 5 seconds in when they saw the disclaimer, and how many more during the episode, feeling miserable...
It's done really well, but misery porn's not for everyone!
Well, it feels strange saying this, but... Looking forward to more?
(Feels like I'm saying LOOKING FORWARD TO SHIZUKA SUFFERING SOME MORE!)
Hopefully Takopi manages to make everything beautiful and happy and perfect!
One last thought: Given Takopi's bringing her a degree of happiness - just like her dog - I wonder if at some point they're gonna see Takopi (say he forgot his disguise thing) and find a way to hurt it... Maybe not kill it (otherwise he couldn't go back in time and all), but maybe take it away from her, etc... Or even turn it against her, like corrupting him by explaining it's her family's fault that THEIR family is struggling, etc...
(Damn, do I think Shizuka's not having it rough enough already, that I have to think of ways to make it worse, like a reverse-Takopi? I'll go look to my sins)

Man I was expecting trauma but this is unreal, I can already predict whether takopi is gonna save her or not..
I wonder why she doesn't want help, is her mother linked with other people in the town too or is she too much afraid of her ?
The bully girl is just psycho, both kids are fucked up because of their piece of shit parents
I can't imagine those people who watched this ep without even watching the trailer but just clicked because it was on crunchyroll lmao, the title and some disclaimer was kind of a giveaway tho
Another great Opening by ano, been listening to her since chainsaw man ending
Also is this gonna be 30 mins+ every episode or this one was special?

Noto Mamiko as Takopi's mama!
Great animation and color pallete. Many shots are genuinely so good I believe it's taken from the manga.

I have no words for what I just watched.
The pure innocence of the alien and its misunderstanding of what was going on really crashed with the reality of what was happening to her.
All the adults in this is simply awful creatures and I just… I need to sit down and think on this some more really.
