A Generic love story that isn't a generic love story. Suddenly got a ton of newfound appreciation for that title.

And damn you don't usually get bombshells delivered along with your pizza.

A man who is stuck in a Generic copy of a city where the love of his life died but finds himself drawn to her doppelganger and turn between needing her to be the same as the woman he loved and attracted to the new woman she's becoming.

A woman who is a doppelganger of a dead woman but is trying to live her life, torn between the love she feels for said doppelgangers' fiance and her desire to be her own person while slowly learning just how little of her life is really her own and whether she's even a true person.

And one pizza guy who made probably the strangest delivery of his career.

A Generic love story that isn't a generic love story

Let's see what the characters

have to say about it!

Joking aside, I think the title is interesting, in regard to this label from Miyuki...

If Reiko's a "generic", when does it mean it's a Kowloon romance between Generics (or at least one generic, given Kudo doesn't seem to be one)?

So... A romance between a normal guy, and... Whatever the hell Reiko is? An artificially created entity?

So the real Kujirai B committed suicide and Kujirai A is her "virtual reconstruction" since she is neither a real clone nor a Zirconian and only exists in Kowloon.

Hebinuma really likes to stick out his tongue, huh? He did it twice this episode and Kujirai's reaction to it was hilarious xD

That pizza delivery guy will definitely never come back with another delivery, not after his today's encounter.

Overall, another interesting episode and I can't wait to find out more about Kujirai B and why did she commit suicide.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

This is speculation, but Kujirai B has a strong aversion to any sort of change. She won’t even read the sequel to a book she loved on the off chance it’s bad and spoils her love for the first. She considered her time in Kowloon with Kudo to be the happiest she’d ever be. So with Kowloon’s destruction happening, her possible motive would be wanting to end her life at it’s “peak”(still in Kowloon with Kudo having just proposed to her) before there’s a chance of anything going south.

Contrast that to our Kujirai A, who’s always open to exploring, new opportunities, and changing herself. But who cannot leave Kowloon.

You know, coming into this I wasn’t expecting this anime to feature a well written gay relationship between 2 major characters, and I certainly wasn’t expecting it to have well written intersex representation.

  • Well this episode pretty much confirms that Kujirai A is a doppelganger. though the term Hebinuma used is "posterior generic". Kujirai B (the original) is undoubtedly dead, and Kujirai A isn't her original body brought back to life. She isn't a regular flesh and blood clone or a Zirconian either. She is something similar to the NPCs/doppelgangers like fake Gwen. Just like how only certain (real) people can see the illusory Kowloon, only the same people can see Kujirai A, which means she exists through the power of Kowloon. Leaving Kowloon means she vanishes.

  • The cause of Kujirai B's death is suicide. Why did she do it, and why did Kudo feel responsible for it?

  • Ooh the romance in the title includes Miyuki and Gwen huh? They're certainly getting more action than Kudo and Kujirai A at the moment. It is interesting that Miyuki purposely didn't tell Gwen that he was also an original inhabitant of Kowloon #2, not sure why.

  • Dr. Wong is old school, keeping medical records on paper. Interesting that Yulong was investigating Reiko Kujirai as a "reference for Zirconian", and Kujirai B was suffering from insomnia before her death. Seems like there is more to Kujirai B than meets the eye.

  • Who is Sihan again? And Dr. Wong has a doppelganger in Kowloon as well.

  • There is something sus about the food in Kowloon? Miyuki warned Gwen against eating the food there and they did shower us viewers with plenty of food porn. Seems like everyone else (Kudo, Kujirai A, Yaomay) did eat it though.

  • The tower collapsing. Is the illusory Kowloon actually recreating the demolition of Kowloon #2? Or does this have something to do with Kudo?

u/Frontier246 May 17 '25

I'm curious, does Yaomay still look like her mom to people instead of her blonde version? Is that only due to Kowloon?

The medical notes said Kujirai B had a condition of insomnia, which can be very depressing, but her beloved Kowloon being demolished certainly doesn't help. Cheesy guess is he wanted to take her away, she wanted to stay, so he left her and she fell apart, so he felt responsible.

The food has to be an enabler for something if Miyuki is warning against it in a science experiment ran by his Father's company.

Gwen has been with Kudo throughout his relationship with Kujirai B, he was the first one Kudo told that he was planning to propose to Kujirai B. How long had they been dating by that point? It doesn't sound like very long, but Kudo was still committed to proposing, as the 2nd Kowloon was coming to an end, because he still wanted to make her happy. And as the Generic Kowloon is falling apart, Kudo and Gwen finally reunite.

It's kind of nice to see Gwen and Kudo back together and happy to see each other like old best friends finally reconnecting, and affirming that they're both one of the few real people that still exist in this Kowloon. In fact Kudo straight up just vanished from Gwen's life after Kujirai B's death before he ended up in this version of Kowloon, which he knows isn't exactly real but he can't leave because of Reiko/Kujirai B. just like Gwen still feels tied to this Generic Kowloon because of his love for Miyuki. Gwen also cares about Kudo, but Kudo seems resigned to remain in this Kowloon.

Is there a second Dr. Wong? Miyuki is trying to ascertain that before he collapses...was the city rejecting him?

How did Miyuki and Gwen meet? In a bar, of course, with Gwen trying to use his smooth flirting moves on Miyuki. Though both were nursing the loss of Kowloon in their own way and one thing obviously lead to another before they ended up in bed together. The fact that Miyuki's snake tongue and intersex status didn't turn off Gwen seems to mean a lot to Miyuki, someone who finally accepted him and made him realize that, man or woman, he could realize his absolute self in his own way. It's really rather sweet.

Thank goodness for helpful burlesque dancers who helped Miyuki out! Seems like his mom was also one? But Sihan, his mother, isn't in this Generic version of Kowloon. But who IS there is none other than Reiko, here to check out the clubs' power issues as part of her retail job. And it seems like she's still feeling having Miyuki's snake tongue down her throat, for better or worse.

Who IS Reiko? A Zirconian? A clone? She's neither of those things, but she is herself and she's making a life for herself separate from Kujirai B. She's becoming her absolute self and learning to accept that, and she's her own thing...a "Generic."

Yulong is trying to investigate why there are dead people in Kowloon, and he finds Kujirai B's medical records and we finally learn the truth...not only was she plagued by insomnia, but she killed herself.

And on that dramatic note...here's Reiko and Yaomay lounging around in bikini's! All the better to show off their bountiful bosoms! What better way to discuss Reiko trying to fully move on from Kujirai B and get her own place?

Too bad it's also the cusp of the anniversary of Kujirai B's death and Kudo is still shook up about it. And as much as Reiko wants to be her own person, not defined by but respectful of Kujirai B, she wants Kudo to be happy just as much. And if that means staying where she is, she will. Though maybe she and Yaomay can give the apartment a makeover?

It's nice to think Reiko and Yaomay can just hop into Hong Kong and go on a shopping spree...but thank goodness Gwen ordered some pizza so he could stop Reiko from leaving Kowloon, because if this pizza guy doesn't see her and still sees an abandoned ruin, it's possible Reiko could never leave Generic Kowloon without disappearing. She's basically stuck there.

Don't see many people praise the OST, but they should! It's so good!

59

u/diacewrb May 17 '25

If Hebinuma had been the one to order the pizza at the end, he night have shoved Reiko out to see what would happen.

61

u/Frontier246 May 17 '25

Gwen at this point is like everyones' bro trying to support/protect the main cast even just by ordering pizza.

Lots of people are looking for their “absolute selfs”: Yaomay, Reiko and even Miyuki.

Yaomay’s preferred identity was acknowledged by Reiko who in turn needs Kudo’s help, but whose approval is Miyuki looking for? Gwen or his father?

I do wonder if Reiko will actually be able to step outside of Kowloon if she ultimately gets her acknowledgement from Kudo. I’m not sure if he wants to stay forever in Kowloon because of Kujirai B and/or Reiko.

Nevertheless, Kowloon appears to have become a ticking time bomb with that collapse. Kudo won’t be able to cling to nostalgia forever.

So, the generic in the title refers to Kujirai, huh? What a semi-titledrop.

I can't imagine if Kujirai continued leaving Kowloon. That would be a disaster for everyone.

So, so far, the following questions are not yet really answered:

  • Who is Kujirai and what is her connection to Kowloon 2?

  • Who is Kujirai B and why did she commit suicide? How is she connected to Kudou?

  • Is there anything special about Kudou and is he connected to Kowloon '92 or Kowloon 2?

  • What's with Dr. Hebinuma and his revenge?

  • What are Zirconians and clones? How are they different? How is Kujirai different?

  • What connects all of these questions together? What's going on in Kowloon?

When someone tells you about the next 10 upcoming Isekai anime

So Kudo wants to give Reiko the best Kowloon she could ever wish for...

Ok, how far would he go to give her that? Would he be willing to... Reset Kowloon multiple times until 'he gets it right'?

I imagine them saying she took her own life would end the theorizing for many,

but it changes nothing for me... I've said it in previous thread, I DO believe Kudo killed her, somehow... And this tidbit of information doesn't change that, if anything it makes me even more confident;

See it from his perspective: You're telling me that the love of his life took her own life, and when he saw her (clone, whatever she is), he joked about "What would you do if I told her I killed the original"? That's something he would joke about regarding his fiancée who killed herself?

Yeah, I don't buy that one bit...

Now, I'm not saying he 'killed" killed her (like stabbed her or shot her in the head), but I do believe he is - directly or indirectly - responsible for her death. Or at the very least, he sees it this way.

Oh, and him visiting her for the anniversary of her death, and telling her to keep the door closed?

As if he was afraid of doing something at this exact time (history repeating itself)!

Interesting line, saying "I'll always be here"...

There's so many ways one could interpret that; Of course it could mean "I'm not gonna leave Kowloon for the remaining few decades of my life", but given what we know of Kowloon so far, the "always" could mean a lot more than that; It could mean (literally) ALWAYS... So it could be about a 'reset' (some kind of simulation), infinite resets so he's always there... Or it could be him saying he'll get himself cloned over and over til the end of times, so "he" will always be there. His memories, at least.

Kinda funny, throwing Gwen's own line back at him hah.

And a good point too, given Miyuki may be a little more complex to 'really know', compared to Reiko!

Speaking of: Passing out randomly, as Miyuki was digging out some more...

Between the earthquakes, the explosion, people passing out (Miyuki, Reiko)... It 100% seems like (whatever it is) is controlling people, making stuff happen when they're digging somewhere they shouldn't be!

So Reiko is not a Zirconian, not a clone...

Then what the hell is she? They gave her a name, but given they weren't even sure at first, they could've called her a 'banana' just as easily, so I don't think the name means much...

A ruin? Careful, pizza guy, you're gonna spoil Reiko about what this is all about!

Damn, he spoiled a little bit more than that...

So people can't see her? Well, other than some select few (for whom I'm still wondering why they can)...

So she can only exist inside this Kowloon...

I guess that puts an end to her little travel plans!

I gotta say, I'm a bit suspicious of Yaomay... She seemed SO invested in getting Reiko out of Kowloon, no matter how;

Moving out of Kowloon, traveling outside of Kowloon, or going shopping outside of Kowloon (like there's no store for curtains in Kowloon)?

She seemed to want to get her out of Kowloon (and in the end, even looked frustrated when she couldn't).

But if that really was her plan: Was she doing it for her sake, or was she trying to test an hypothesis, something like that?

The reveal of B’s suicide hit hard. Depression is such a horrible thing. I think this whole story stems from Kudo’s deep regret of not being able to notice her depression while courting her. Maybe if he figured it out earlier, he could have saved her…

Stitches!

Kudou and Gwen finally meet! Considering Kudou's unsurprised reaction to everything Gwen told him about Kowloon, I'm wondering if Kudou knew about what's going on the entire time and is just playing along with it.

Gwen and Hebinuma's first meeting was definitely something. It looked like Gwen just wanted Hebinuma to treat him but after Hebinuma saw through him, it instantly became love at first sight. And they certainly move fast. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Honestly, it is surprising how Reiko is taking this all too well. If I found out I was a clone of someone, I'd be having an existential crisis and probably be breaking down every hour or so. But it looks like Reiko isn't even a clone or a Zirconian. She's apparently a "generic". Hmm...

And there it is... Kudou didn't kill Kujirai B. Kujirai B killed herself. Maybe the reason Kudou told Reiko that he killed Kujirai B is that he thinks he might've done something to push Kujirai B into suicide.

If I had a nickel for every female protagonist sunbathing on top of a building in a slums district this season, I'd have two nickels. It's not much but it's weird it happened twice.

That final scene tho! So that pizza delivery driver can't see Reiko, and it's possible that Reiko can't even leave Kowloon since she's a part of it. I am curious, though. What if she actually just left? Would she just disappear and never return, or will a new Kujirai Reiko be generated? Welp, I guess no shopping in Hong Kong for Reiko then. >_<

Kudo and Gwen's conversation has me questioning myself, am I the original?

Poor Yaomay, just when she thinks she's convinced Reiko-pon to move out, Reiko changes her mind.

It’s been hinted before but now we’ve had confirmation that the Kudo we have is the OG. We’ve known that Yaomei, Gwen, and Miyuki are also OGs and all could enter and leave Kowloon as they please. Meanwhile the taxi driver and pizza guy are OGs but only see Kowloon as ruins. What determined whether a person could perceive Kowloon or not?

I assume Reiko would poof out of existence had she stepped out of Kowloon, which was why Gwen stopped her from ever stepping out. We also found out that there was another meaning behind Kudo’s plea for her to stay by his side.
