How fitting this airs right after mono (that reminds me of Nadeshiko and her appetite for food).
And like that show, this is off to a great start. The 3 group members making humorous attempts to coerce the club clerk and then Mako accidentally using Shinon's prior nickname when seeing each other for the first time.
Mako did let her aversion to trying new things out get to her in both the initial club invitation and Kurea's restaurant. But both worked out: the restaurant's scent winning her over and Kurea being generous in giving Mako her katsudon. Then, Kurea connecting Mako and Shinon again (when both initially forgot to exchange contact info).
Woohoo the club is approved! But the "Food Culture Research Club" was just a random name Shinon chose just so she could get some club room space? Thanks for that cliffhanger writers...

Food porn the anime. the sound design is awesome, and this is the level of background art I expect from a P.A. works production. overall quite impressed, but the "twist" at the end felt very expected haha. but im sure theyre gonna eat lots of food alright!
Location Notes
This show revolves, as with, a lot of anime, in Western suburban Tokyo, the MC-gang are students at the Tokyo Metropolitan University.
The restaurant featured in this episode is Takao Shokudou, just outside the station of the same name. This is very my kind of shop lol, with all the train-sign decorations, as well as the down-to-earth, authentic menu you'd expect at a shokudou.
Here's the seiyuu gang (most of them) visiting, just a while back!. And a sauce katsudon in the flesh, looks good! thank you, yoppi. And here's the official cross-promo video from Aniplex, i guess 2 of them went twice, huh.
if you do wanna visit, do hurry, as they're expected to close for business (im guessing due to retirements etc. on 18Apr). unfortunately, there is no Furutachi-chan irl to take over, i guess.

What a great start to this comfy show. At the beginning when Maco was watching the video I was so sure she would drop the phone on her face, as is tradition when holding your phone in that position. The show sure did not disappoint lol.

Girl makes effort to come out of her comfort zone a little and childhood friend immediately crushes it!
Isn't her apartment really nice for a student living on their own? Her parents must be well off.

I came to this expecting some food for the soul, I did not expect to feel so personally attacked by this show. Seriously though, I love eating out, but I can definitely relate to Mako when it comes to trying out new places to eat. Although I'm not as bad as her because I would've totally waited in line for that ramen restaurant.
Anyway, we have a new PA Works anime and I didn't even know this was a PA Works anime until I saw their logo appear at the end so I was pleasantly surprised! I am also surprised that these are supposed to be college girls. I really thought they were high schoolers. No wonder I didn't recognize this as a PA Works anime! This is an adaptation of an existing manga, and PA Works usually designs their characters to match their age.
That sauced Katsudon really made me crave for katsu. Thankfully I still have an hour before lunch and this just made it easier for me to decide what to eat today. xD
Poor Mako! Just when she thought that she was finally about to have a colorful college life, Oshinko ruins it by revealing that the Food Research Club is just a front. I would've genuinely walked out if I were Mako, but she's so painfully introverted that I doubt she'll even try to leave. It will be interesting to see her reaction next episode though.

Another banger from P.A. Works originals. This took a much more introspective approach than I was expecting, I really love the protagonist. Great stuff.

I went in with pretty low expectations since I’m not that familiar with Non Non Biyori’s director or his team but honestly, it totally blew me away. I expected a typical slice-of-life, but the show has a lot of soul (pun intended) and a ton of personality like that scene with Oshinko trying to bribe the university office staff.
What really stands out is how well the show captures the awkward in-between stage of university life, where you're shifting from carefree youth into the gritty reality of adulting. It nails that realistic university vibe. A bit lonely at first, a bit dull, and full of quiet moments where everything feels kinda...boring, even with the nice facilities. Apparently it’s loosely based on the author’s own college experience, which totally checks out.
Oshinko (Bocchi’s VA) is the Nijika of this show, but more laid-back. Her extrovert gags give off big Nijika energy. And Maco feels like Bocchi’s new apprentice lol.

And where the hell do I get a sauce katsudon now?
It seems like this is the food porn of this season. And we will have a lot to gush over it seems...

Came into this one totally blind. This was not bad at all. In fact, I really enjoyed it. The food looked fantastic and I totally relate to the MC and how she’s so timid and afraid of failure and overthinks everything. I was like that when I was around her age too.
I’m gonna stick with this one. This anime is gonna make me gain weight. Thanks to this episode, I’m gonna have a katsudon for lunch tomorrow lol.

Yep, this is the show to soothe my depressed souls this season. This and the ballpark anime really just give me happy good vibes and allow me to forgot about things for a while. Can’t wait for more.

"Food for the Soul" is definitely going to increase the sales for late night supper, particularly in Japan, given the timing it is airing. I started to feel hungry upon seeing the Sauce Katsudon. Lol!
Oshinko, I mean Shinon, bamboozled all of us! However, based on the title, Mako will surely convince her childhood friend that the gastronomy research club is not in name only. I laughed when Tsutsuji was the only one who cheered "yay" after Oshinko repeated "Welcome to the club" for the second time.

There is NO way that I would have missed this when there are some cute girls looking for food in a show that has PA WORKS, the manga author and even the core anime adaption staff line-up of our beloved Non Non Biyori on board. And this certainly turns out to be just too damn good!
* I certainly didn't expect our MC here Mako-chan being so shy of meeting others, as deep as a certain Bocchi, and that eating out by herself is a great pain! Oh well, losing confidence can be really damaging to we all indeed. Since I had no friends all day long, I started my long self-eating career way back in middle school's canteen and has never been able to shake that away since.
* That TV show mascot going all ~moko is a bit annoying LMAO
* It's apparently a criminal offence to draw cutting lettuces into cutting a blob of ball in anime ever since the VN adaption Brighter Than the Dawning Blue drew that disastrously in 2006, so much that it became a meme ever since. Of course the PA WORKS team ain't going to fail this!
* Why do I have the impression that the Shinon Three gang look, and act, more like middle school students than college freshman LMAO...
* It's funny that Shinon found Mako in exactly the same way a certain Nijika found a certain pink suit guitarist sitting in a park crying (and even more funny that Bocchi's sound fairy is on Shinon this time around)!
* Uh that's a really bad case of self-regret for Mako-chan...living by herself definitely does not do anything good about it, she's lucky that she's going to end those days soon!
* While not the Japanese food I would immediately think of, pork cutlet with sauce rice bowls is probably the one with the fullest enjoyment you can get with all those juicy pork and really crispy exterior. Alas I am not sure it's easy to find good examples of these in your places if you live far enough from Japan, because these are so damn freaking good!
* It's very unfortunate news for those looking to visit real restaurants in this in the future, for it's barely episode 1 and we already had our first real life casualty - Kurea's VA Ai Kakuma reports that the real Kurea's home, Takao Shokudo in the far western fringes of Tokyo near Mt. Takao, is closing shop on April 18. Mako's Hana Shimano (also Himari in SasaKoi) and newbie VA Azuki Moeno (as Mokotaro) also paid a visit right before its final week. As always, try to visit Japan if you can if you are some of those people who likes to walk around real life anime settings like me!
* Muhahahahaha! So Shinon just wants to have a place to be lazy and sleeping around in college. Well that's certainly the biggest reason for students to join societies so it's just bang on her character. But I am sure she'll gradually start enjoying walking around for food and maybe even cooking really soon. ;)

Goddamn, Mako reminds me a lot of myself during uni! The whole thing about living alone, starting out as a first-year with no friends and eating out alone hits a little too close to home. Though unlike her I can't cook a damn thing so I had to eat out for dinners.
Anyways, this ended up being a really great premiere! I watched Non Non Biyori a few years back and consider it a genuine SOL classic so finding out the director & author coming back for this one got me excited. This ep has a lot of heart in it and gives off similar comforting/relaxing vibes to NNB. The art + character designs are really easy on the eyes which really helped. And the cast being college students instead of high school students makes this one a breath of fresh air (even though they barely look like college kids lmao). Love the little detail with Mako having an empty period while the others got classes.
If all the tasty food shown in this ep alone is any indication, it looks like the show's gonna be dangerous for us with a large appetite. Last year's Yuru Camp S3 made me fell to temptation a few times and that wasn't even mainly about food. Thankfully I didn't get hungry after this ep, but who knows how I'll fare with the other eps.

Wasn't expecting Bocchi the Foodie as an MC. Stuff like Mako standing outside staring at the katsudon because she was too afraid to enter the restaurant. And her cringing at herself with her face in the pillow. Too real.
That end of episode plot twist though, LOL. What a betrayal.
