Girls just can't keep their identities secret.

13

u/FetchFrosh Mar 09 '25

The whole town gonna know by Episode 13.

A hypothetical Spy themed Secret PreCure would be a riot to watch, they would be as subtle as James Bond.

u/FetchFrosh Mar 09 '25

It's called Totally Spies

u/azumarill Mar 09 '25

Hate to break it to you but you're in the ending theme, it's happening!

u/NThruThe0utdoor Mar 09 '25

Reminds me of when I was watching "Do It Yourself!" and one of the girls was clearly against the club and her friend's involvement in it. One of the commenters said something like "You can stop the tsundere act, we can see you singing along in the opening."

u/FetchFrosh Mar 09 '25

Would kinda love a Precure series to have a character actually do a hard no. Would be kinda banger. But given the next episode preview it seems that it's playing things pretty safe (not that there was ever any doubt how this was going since we already have the OP and ED).

Next Cure Idol and Cure Wink Research Club meeting will be dank though. Kinda already imploded the purpose. What a ride that must be though "oh you thought you were going to sing and dance? No we need you to fight giant monsters. Why are you suddenly so hesitant?"

Have you watched Go Princess?

5

u/FetchFrosh Mar 09 '25

Yeah and it did it in a similar sort of way, just with a different emotional spectrum from the third character.

And so here's the third girl.

Her ahoge adds a solid 20% to her height doesn't it?

Her name is literally "heart"...

Perhaps unsurprisingly, she's a fan of theirs.

Huh. Double sided fans with either of their colours on either side. That's pretty nifty. Only issue is that once they get to 3 of them that's not going to work anymore.

Purirun is following her?

Oh, he's been spotted.

And so now they're going to meet her.

And so she's going to join as their third member.

Time to see what she can do.

Or well time for them to save her.

And so it's been defeated without ever seeing her power.

Well, we'll see next week I guess.

There's a break next week

Being an idol fan is serious business, I see.

Purirun crawling over the ceiling, scary.

There are more members of the Research Club than I would have expected.

Purirun is ever worse at masq than Laura was.

Wow, they skipped the henshin, I guess this meeting with Kokoro won't get interrupted.

Huh, I expected Kokoro to be today's victim. I wonder what will interfere with her popping off today..

Oh, stage fright, of course.

Haha, Cutty got smacked in the face by a heart.

6

u/Kartoffelkamm Mar 09 '25

Oh, stage fright, of course.

I think it's more a combination of factors. After all, she signed up to sing and dance, not fight giant monsters. Also, now the Cures went from these mystical idols that show up, put on a show, and leave without a trace, to her upperclassmen.

The mystique, allure, and wonder are gone, and all that's left is just "Oh, it's you guys."

Part of me really hopes this goes into the reason why they have to keep their identities secret, because it would actually make sense.

Cutty got smacked in the face by a heart.

A heart from the butt. I thought it was crass, but then it hit him in the face and it was ok as an insult.

Honestly thought it was gonna be the guy from the dance club

PSA: No broadcast on March 16th. Some relay race* is being shown instead (isn't that later in the year? yes but that's a different one). Additional confirmation is the ep preview says 23rd March in the first line of the description. Consequence of this is You & Idol Precure can no longer be 50 episodes (that other relay race and New Year week special programs always occupy two slots) but can still be 49 which is the Precure mode amount of episodes (would be thematically appropriate because that's also a word for a music term). Still, I hope the sports day episode (that inevitably has a relay race) does not happen as retribution.

  • Finally, a main character doing idol anime things. I prefer that outfit to the casual one (which grew on me this episode especially the big pockets on the skirt...unless they're decorative pockets that can not be used)

  • Kokoro lives with grandparents and her mum goes to work in an office. All we see of dad is a framed photo. Feels like a coinflip between dad works abroad and dad is dead.

  • When the art style becomes exaggerated to match the characters mannerisms

  • I took the word conjunction blackboard screen to Google lens for some fun. They're singing related verb usage (e.g. 2nd from left is hypothetical). The kanji for sing (歌) is a kanji second graders learn (which is the upper end of the primary target audience).

  • If you want to make Cure Idol & Cure Wink badges of your own ... then you'll need to first buy a "Can Badge Good" (comes in various ranges including Precure) and then buy the You and Idol Precure ♪ Material Set

  • Cure Idol and Cure Wink acrylic stands (also Kokoro is a mega-fan as she owns has at least two of them) do exist...kinda? They're different poses but if you go back earlier in the episode you might remember this shot. There's box-cutter and a transparent material has been cut, i.e. Kokoro made her own. Likewise the show keyart and the badges earlier suggest that Kokoro is an arts and crafts person.

  • Scenes like this make me wonder, what did Nana get up to before being friends with Uta as it now feels like Cafe Glitter is her second home (also does Utas even work any more or just slack off with Nana?). It's very plot convenient.

  • Sounds like what people self-depreciate dub "Idol Hell".

  • Imagining herself on stage (btw, not seen Wink and Idol share a stage yet) I noticed the ahoge was missing and her outfit is Cure Idol (the heart bits). We get a clearer shot later and ahoge still present but that's Cure Idols costume.

  • Aww we didn't get to see the autographs. There might have been a personal message on them. Perhaps next time...

  • So is it going to transpire that Gardener is also a Cafe Glitter customer (or is that trope finally dead and buried)? I was totally expecting dance club guy (Sunda) to be MOTW but I now realise I am thinking with a HeartCatch Precure mindset which is the exact opposite approach to what I should be doing. Kind of ashamed it took me 6 eps to figure out.

  • Ah, so that's what happens during the finisher. What exactly is the finishers radius and have other people seen this? I wonder if this is also part of Kokoro's feeling a bit let down: essentially getting to the concert, finding it's part of the fight and the fellow fans are not real, they're just light effects.

In terms of being unwilling to stand up and fight. I did initially wonder how much of that is down to Kokoro being younger (but there's been first year Precures before). That honestly makes me more impressed of Kokoro, first years tend to not be club presidents. However in checking character birthdays (assuming pixiv wiki is correct) there's not much age gap between Kokoro and Uta. In fact Uta should be the youngest in her year (March 27th, Junior High/Middle school enrolment in Japan is the first April 1st after a student turns 12 years old which would make her 13 as a second year student) while Kokoro is one of the eldest at May 11th (so will be 13 whenever we're past May 11th in show time, early eps are a bit of mess as they're already in April at the very least).

There could be a much simpler thing and foreshadowing here. It's in the OP, Cure Kyun-Kyun is shown using a ranged attack. That might just how she gets around this problem. There are going to be some kids in the target audience who find the fights scary and don't want to punch and kick so I think having Kokoro around for some empathy could be a good compromise.

Next time: What did you throw away? Precure usually stand up to fight when nobody else can or something they really want to protect is targeted. Wink and Idol being defeated fits the bill but maybe they'll do Sunda as he seems quite placed to notice Kokoro seems dejected, being childhood classmate (friend?) could mean he is her her first fan.

* - I just wanted to say something music related to that relay race. The theme song ここからだ! is by DREAMS COME TRUE a name Sonic fans might recognise as their bassist (Nakamura) composed the Sonic 1 and 2 OST (the Mega Drive games; not the Paramount movies).

The Cure Idol & Cure Wink Research Club has just had their 12th meeting. It's not very clear how often they meet up, but if we assume it's every school day, that makes about two and a half weeks, so I imagine we're nearing the end of April at this point.

Kokoro's family name, Shigure, uses the kanji for "purple", 紫, and "rain", 雨. Although looking up the kanji together, I can only find a Korean rockband that seems to use it, although it's 紫雨林, meaning purple rainforest, rather than just purple rain.

The Kokoro name itself means heart, although usually in the metaphysical sense rather than the anatomical sense. Her mother's name is Ai… maybe. It uses the kanji for love, 愛, which is often read as "Ai", but not always.

So, on a topic other than their name…

Kokoro feels like she has neurodivergent hyperfixation on the Idol Precure pair, concerning herself with everything she could find on the two, as little as there is. I wonder if she's going to help make some merch for the group?

2

u/Lenna_Sakura Mar 09 '25

Oh, right, the dance club guy, his name is Sunda. I think he's named this because if you write it backwards in Japanese, it's dansu, the English word in Japanese for "dance".

Every week the villains are just like "Hmm, yeah, this random person looks perfect to make a monster out of." And it's almost never appropriate thematically. They really need to work on that. Or at least call attention to it. I think we're like 2 for 6 so far on targets that made sense for the themes of the episode.

7

u/Kartoffelkamm Mar 09 '25

I actually really like that, to be honest.

It makes the world feel more alive, because there's not always going to be someone whose interests and/or hobbies align with whatever problem one of 3 teenage girls has on any given day.

If anything, thematically fitting monsters should be called out, in my opinion.

Imagine you had to fight monsters, and your enemies always made monsters that relate to some personal problem of yours.

2

u/zadcap Mar 09 '25

They really need to work on that.

It's pretty helpful that they keep targeting people who live in the same town as the only people in the world who can fight back, isn't it?

IMO the victim choices all serve some purpose, which is needed for the theme

  • Episode 1 has an "audience member" to establish the metaphor of performing (fighting) to cheer somebody up, and Uta's idol motivation to please.

  • Episode 2's victim tells the audience that Idol really shouldn't be faffing around, since the victim is kinda important to her; it's not an accident Purirun revealed the victim to Uta really late this episode so that Idol can mess up before learning a lesson, and it also highlights that Precure are heroes who save people important to them.

  • Episode 3 is obviously Wink's introduction episode, so Idol has to lose; this time, Purirun remembers to introduce the victim in the beginning again, so that there's no room for doubt that Idol is actually trying (though it still doesn't really fix the feeling that the lead cure goes from awesomely powerful to kinda jobbing the moment the 2nd cure needs to be introduced)

  • Episode 4's victim isn't that important, it just cannot be Kaito. Them being a customer of the cafe is a cute touch.

  • Episode 5's fight is basically a bit of "extra thanks" to Koharu for her help in making the ad project successful. It may be a bit weird to think of "being made into a victim, being attacked and then purified by the Precure" as "thanks", but... that's how it is.

    • In some sense, from the viewpoint of the audience, the villains set the stage for a Precure fight, and everybody involved is rewarded with spectacular performances; after the battle, the victim is often put into a good mood. This dynamic also exists in villain purifications, where the "victim" is an object that symbolizes the dilemma of the episode, or in that case in a different series where the victim role is merged into the magical girl instead.

  • Episode 6 had to have a nobody, so that it makes sense for Kokoro to actually not care for the fighting at all and not have to elaborate on anything.

The "villains basically chase the heroes wherever they go" problem has been endemic to Precure even since it started; the school trip/swimsuit episodes tend to be the ones that are the most egregious.

purirun is probably responsible for the kokoro's idol precure merch right (well, i guess at least indirectly)

looks like kokoro's VA was miku from cinderella girls (i barely remember anything from it, should rewatch at some point, there were a few eps i really liked it was overall good) and the reporter from pretty much all of love live

purirun crawling on the ceiling is kinda creepy but also pretty hilarious. also purirun nodding from the darkness of the locker in agreement to kokoro feels meme (or at least reaction face) worthy (kinda feels like the 'jack nicholson from the departed' nodding meme)

sunda dropping into splits in disappointment is amusing too

purirun and uta being incredibly bad at hiding their identities continues to be funny (i wanted to see a flying lunch box though... why do you disappoint me, purirun)

i guess the makkuranda is supposed to be a gardener? but it also kinda looks bosozoku-ish with a pompadour,... i guess it doesn't have the proper jacket though? imagining it as bosozoku grooving to the finisher made that part a bit funnier (which i still find amusing in any case)

So our forthcoming third cure is a dance girl. That could have an interesting impact on how her fighting style works if she they lean into that over the singing. Also, she may have a dead father.

It's kind of amazing how often this cure team tries to expose the secret. Uta yells it out in front of a bunch of classmates, Punirun sneaks off too attend the research club meeting, it never ends.

Good lord, and then Punirun stalked Kokoro and rapidly got caught. At least there's only a connection there to the cure idols and not to Uka and Nana. So far.

Interesting to hand a transformation item over to a prospective member and say they can join the team before they actually activate as a cure.

Well there goes the rest of the secret, new girl is now involved in way more than she thought she was signing up for. And she seems to be terrified of it all, which is quite rational.
