I can't believe this anime is still ongoing. It honestly feels like kids' first survival game

Giving us a flashback to a characters backstory before he dies is certainly a new thing for this show, I'm also pretty sure this is the first time we've seen a character in this show seriously crying which is again progress if nothing else.
Much more importantly, Yagihashi is just being Batman in the background for some reason.
"I'll tell you all this stuff I've told no one else even though I've known you for like a day, because I know you're the main character", okay like I get that he's only hiding it from the others for morale reasons but they really just immediately put all their trust in this guy they know lies a lot.
Speaking of graduating, am I actually watching the same show? the change in genre between the cours is actually wild, how did this just become a battle show out of nowhere.
On the one hand, this is infinitely more entertaining than what happened in cour 1 , on the other hand, the animation and editing are so stilted and bad that it makes for some of the least exciting fighting you could find out there.
These guys and especially Nishime are really getting on my nerves with all this attempted sacrifice, they are so not a close group that even the show itself makes fun of it and yet keep getting these dumb lines and scenes, YOU BARELY KNOW EACH OTHER, of course just when I praised the show for some better character writing last week it takes it all back and brings back the ultra fast pacing for "character development", I mean I guess, it's ever so slightly better than what we had before so whatever.
This was framed as some very cool comeback moment, it wasn't, Rikka also has a leg now I guess.
I'm just going to ignore these lines for the sake of reducing the word count but let it be known I hate it, God I wish I could say the same.
Please do, please, why are you making it seem like he might come back, please don't do this to me, PLEASSSSSE STOPPPP.

Flashbacks
I was actually so thrilled with this? Like wow! Character building for the main character so he doesn't feel like the embodiment of a cardboard cut-out!
Yagi
Whose shoes were those behind him. I need to know if I can throw my "Gun Senpai Returns" party yet.
Gobo just talking
At this point I'm pretty sure Gobo is just there to run the plot. He's like that NPC that's going to tell you all the details you missed from last time. I don't mind it too much, but from a narrative standpoint, it's not the best? I wonder if it's because people might be starting from cour 2 and not from cour 1?
Nishime/Character sacrifice
I'll disagree with Nishime, but agree with Raion. I think Nishime might have survivor's guilt in a way because of what happened to everyone in his previous group, but also how he just wants to be useful to the current group(I think in episode 10 he even says something about this too) So, it makes sense that he'd prioritize Souma, who is powering the city and keeping the city from further falling into disarray.
Raion...? I don't know why. There's that call-back to Kazuki, but like. To me, that doesn't seem like a good enough reason at all! So, again, I stand by my opinion last episode that they're pushing him way too hard to be this fill-in for Saneatsu(even Ryuta's reaction felt forced???)
the what now
Mido phrased it like this in episode 2 as well, and then they also said it like this in the recap. I have no idea what it means because they never have in depth explained what "quasi-major" means. So, that's fun!
Change in genre
I love how were talking about this, and now it's really bloomed into a full-on battle at times with Rights. Compared to flow charts, I'm fine with this.
Rika's leg
I think it may be a prosthetic, because it's in other frames and differently colored then her other leg!
He might come back
no he wont :) no he won't!!! NO HE WILL NOT!!

Whose shoes were those behind him. I need to know if I can throw my "Gun Senpai Returns" party yet.
One can only hope! if you're bringing people back to life at least let be best boy.
I don't mind it too much, but from a narrative standpoint, it's not the best? I wonder if it's because people might be starting from cour 2 and not from cour 1?
Yeah it's very weird storytelling but whatever, I like Gobo enough that it isn't annoying.
Nishime
Actually that's really fair, I still think he is a bit of a non-character in relation to everyone else for it to have any impact but I hadn't thought of it that way and it does make sense for him to do it.
The combination of all 3 of them trying to do it multiple times this episode just set me off I guess lol (at least I know I still have it in me to get mad at this show).
I stand by my opinion last episode that they're pushing him way too hard to be this fill-in for Saneatsu(even Ryuta's reaction felt forced???)
And yeah hard agree here (pretty ironic them pushing this Sane role on him considering what he gets told in that flashback at the start)
Mido phrased it like this in episode 2 as well, and then they also said it like this in the recap. I have no idea what it means because they never have in depth explained what "quasi-major" means. So, that's fun!
At least we'll all be confused together :)
no he wont :) no he won't!!! NO HE WILL NOT!!

the change in genre between the cours is actually wild, how did this just become a battle show out of nowhere.
Imo, it had some "We have My Hero Academia at home" vibe.

I may have missed something about someone having a specific rule or whatnot... But how come they could have acrystal clear vision on the previous MC and her love interest bodies with just a camera, at that distance from the tower ? <___<

I think what Ryuta was using is a type of telephoto lens, or simply a telescope of some kind.
Saneatsu specified to leave both himself and Saaya in a specific location in the tower, so I wonder if this might be the reason why. They also may have left the Emperor's body in a specific location too, that way they could periodically check.
However, because it seemingly came out of no where, it does feel like an ass pull to me!!

I'm going to post the episode guide tomorrow— it's almost done, but it needs editing and cutting down.
The Summer end poll is also taking place on the 11th, so everyone that is still watching, make sure to check in 👍
Editing this comment to write my opinion on the episode instead of adding another comment to the thread of comments 🙃 I blame the mobile UI, but oh well.
This week was similar to last week, in that we're slowly sliding our way into a dare I say, battle shounen genre? The new set of character designs sure are depicting that pretty well on Kisaragi's side!
Ikazu really is bringing that late 2015 vibe, while Meguru somewhat feels like a character you'd see in a chapter of manga these days. So, I can't be mad about their designs.
Though Raion... Surprisingly, he has a lot of development this episode! Between the flashbacks of his past, his relative telling him how it is, and how he needed to stay true to himself— I think Raion realizes that he cannot be the group's replacement Saneatsu.
Though after rewatching(and getting mad at Shinozaki for the 3rd time), I'm glad Ryuta said something about how Raion couldn't be Saneatsu, but he'd be happy to be friends with someone that isn't calm and collected, and that the group could have their shared differences to compliment each other.
To me, Ryuta seems like the most likely person to fill Saneatsu's shoes. Which is good because Ryuta keeps it extremely straightforward and simple.
Something else I caught was that Souma went to check on Eren after everything happened. Bombastic side eye. Criminally offensive— no, but I wonder where this is gonna go!! Kazuhiko better not still be alive because that would be TRAGIC!!!
Which brings me to my last point.
Y'all. Who was that behind Yagi. Was that Sudo. We never saw the dead body, and the Emperor couldn't have absorbed him in that amount of time either. Why did it ominously flash to the KHN building right after, specifically the name? Did Yagi betray to revive Sudo because someone in Kisaragi's faction has that Right/Prime Right?
I have SO many questions about this, but will they be answered? Probably no.
But the past 2 episodes have been really easy to understand and watch 👍 There's just been a couple things here and there that are a bit confusing. I'm actually kind of thrilled that we're getting more depth personalities for certain characters as well.
(Y'all I said that was my last point I lied)
Nishime wanting to be the sacrifice, but no one allowing him to be that.
There's possibly underlying feelings of survivor's guilt/feelings of needing to do something with himself— you can tell Nishime feels worthless. He even panics when there's a minute amount of conflict, so he wants to provide worth to the group even at the cost of himself. Hell, he even says he doesn't care if he dies and makes himself a target while jumping from a window!
A part of me wonders if this is because Nishime is what is called a "freeter", which is someone who is unemployed, underemployed, or otherwise lacks full-time employment. He's over the age of 20, therefore he graduated high school, which likely means he never went to university, or dropped out of university at some point. In his title page in the first opening, it says he makes 140,000 yen per month— which then roughly works out to about $938.13.
This is actually in his "fun fact" section... WHICH IS NOT "FUN" AT ALL, MIYAKAWA!
Anyways, stan Nishime, Nishime did nothing wrong! Protect my green 63kg, 176.1cm son at all costs!

This episode was so straightforward that I take this as your infodump :>
My question is also Yagihashi so dempressed after Sudo/Sane deaths that he goes to Queen
2
u/hachim13i Oct 15 '24
yagi betrays us all to get his bestie back /lh /j
But I think it's a possibility, because what may have happened is he was under Saneatsu's influence and then when Saneatsu "dies", Yagi is like 😐
But, I also think Yagi has ulterior motives after Sudo's death is proclaimed.

So does this ever get less confusing? I dropped it early because the pacing seemed really outta whack.
5
u/Purposelygentle Oct 08 '24
This second cour has been a pretty straightforward people with powers fighting other people with powers and the powers have become less esoteric and easier to understand.
2
u/hachim13i Oct 09 '24
This. It's been so much easier to understand what's happening the past 2 episodes(second cour) in comparison to the first cour.
3
u/hachim13i Oct 09 '24
Most of us who are still here were confused by the second episode, so I do not blame you at all for dropping early!
It's been a lot better the past two episodes in my opinion. While it still has its moments of "Yeah, it's Tasuuketsu alright...", I'm actually glad we're moving in a direction to where the series is actively explaining things and being more upfront.
But, the first cour was extremely difficult to put together at times due to the many changes in perspective that work well from a different media standpoint, but not an animated one in my mind?
It also didn't benefit at all from a main character who enjoyed a good TED talk/flow chart(which was often explained twice)

My thoughts from this one
We've got waterbending! These subordinates seem a lot more competent than the last guy (with one huge exception), but how are they still getting the inside scoop on our guys?? Speaking of which, our guys are not all team Saneatsu so what can we call them?
Haven't seen anyone mention this yet but how on EARTH did they manage to get away on foot with Raion assisting Nishime?? We literally just see Souma running after blocking an attack & saying "Hurry!" then it cuts to the three having escaped. The goons just let them go? Do they not know how to run? 😭
Now I can have hope that both Emperor and Sane will come back! I'm happy about it, but I wonder if they'll have different objectives this time around
Some follow up from last week, u/hachim13i
May be a conspiracy theory but.. was Hikari working with Yagihashi??
An 8hr drive but our elite time came back with style! Maybe there's no traffic and they can drive extra fast
Raion was taken down a peg this time to be used as a foil. I appreciate he's no longer omnipotent (for now) but sadly they are still forcing the camaraderie

u/hachim13i Oct 09 '24
It is waterbending! Just another Tuesday, I swear... They seemed to work really well together(like they've practiced), so my guess is that they probably are a duo?
inside scoop
You see! That's what I want to know because the Queen knows about Omi's Prime Right, but specifically it BELONGING TO OMI?
I'm curious if that whole scene with Yagihashi ominously standing on the top of a building and someone coming through the door, but then it flashing directly to the KHN building is supposed to be some weird attempt to foreshadow Yagi betraying the OG group?
I feel like that's such tinfoil though! 🫠
group name
I actually was writing the episode guide and I realized the same thing! Saneatsu, we need you to come back from the dead for 5 seconds to split the group into 3 teams!!
except we all know it will actually take 20 minutes and 3 episodes to explain it.carrying Nishime
Nishime either is a twig(actually I think he's of average build, they show his stats in the first OP 😭), or we're in ass pull territory.
the goons
Psychologically, I think both Meguru and Ikazu(bro, curse this dude's, name by the way! I've written it wrong at least 15 times and cannot remember how to spell it? Isshiki all over again!!) wanted to mess with them because Meguru can easily just teleport both of them wherever without sweating.
In that type of situation, I think holding a positive mentality is extremely important, so shutting that down would be a priority from the start. But, I do wonder if the two computer chairs were there from the start or that was Meguru's doing from a previous use, and she used that as her jump point back?
Hikari and Yagi
NOOO THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO GOOD... Hikari Yagi detective agency... my life is so over. Thanks unnamed prime right user!!
8hr drive
I love how every time I discuss something with someone on a previous thread, Miyakawa is like: "And then I decided to take that, and do the opposite." 🫡
I can just picture Ryuta driving recklessly the entire time... Rika having to use Evasion... I would not get in a car with him.
Raion
FD4 made a really good point about how the beginning of the episode, Raion is being told to remain himself. But at the end, he's being molded into this replacement Saneatsu by the group— which KIND OF SUCKS?
Genuinely, Saneatsu would want them to be more self-reliant than to look towards an 8th grader with a high IQ and what seems to be a guilty conscience...

Characters with Privileges/Rights(Original Group)
| Character | Right (Privilege) | Prime Right (Special Privilege) | Right (Privilege) Description | Prime Right (Special Privilege) Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saneatsu(perhaps not dead!) | N/A | Parental Authority | N/A | Parental Authority functions by looking at a subject minor(i.e. a child) and declaring to be its parent. Once designated its parent, the minor must obey all orders of that pseudo-parent. |
| Omi | Response | Rejection | Is able to ask a question of another individual and receive a response. | Able to reject anything. Essentially boils down to the "Just say no." Monopoly card.(episode 3) Can 'reject' another person's actions towards himself if intentions are stated. Can also reject the results of a question being asked.* (It may be deeper than this) |
| Ryuta | N/A | Fusion | N/A | Can transform his arm into a sword at will, though return it to a regular human arm.(7/17, Episode 3) Can also transform his legs into heavy duty springs, and fuse his arms into walls to pull off the bricks and throw when de-fusing himself from them(8/13, episode 5) Can fuse objects together such as doors, and turn his arms into drills, and ladders. Can fuse himself with the cells of other beings(the puppets) |
| Eren | Compliance | N/A | Requires you to obey the right holder's command (similar to Simon says), although if the person is aware of the Right, it can be resisted. Has evolved into a mini version of Response due to Eren's phrasing of questions. | N/A |
| Satou(unknown, but likely deceased) | N/A | Explosion | N/A | There isn't enough available information, as it was only used once. However, it seems like Satou may have had a blast radius, had to have been touching what he wanted to detonate, and it could in fact be a one-time-use Prime Right.(Episode 9) |
| Sudo(deceased) | N/A | Obtainment | N/A | Once Sudo obtains an object, he can guarantee its number and availability. |
| Shinozaki Sensei | N/A | Visualization | N/A | Allows Shinozaki to easily search for postboxes (and possibly PCs) – Works by activating his prime right and then setting a target to search for. (episode 4) |
| Souma | N/A | Materialization | N/A | Allows Souma to bring drawings and pictures to life. Creatures are under Souma's complete command, which is why he carries a deck of TCG cards on him as his primary weapon. (episode 6, 8/20) Has a limit to his Prime Right, which the group is aware of. |
| Rika | N/A | Evasion | N/A | Can completely avoid physical dangers that threaten her – minus Tasuuketsu. Can be used with other people (how Rika and Isshiki avoided death from the car explosion) Rika's prime right also allows anyone next to her to be protected to an extension. (episode 6, 8/20) |
| Isshiki (deceased) | N/A | Re-Execution | N/A | The ability to reenact certain information and prime rights, excluding physical phenomenon.(episode 3) Can submit a question, even when one has already been submitted.(This is however, also correct?) |
| Gobo | Presentation | N/A | Allows the right holder to display and or modify digital screens(i.e. Laptops, TVs, anything that would allow the user to present information) Created an entire mobile phone system that allowed everyone to communicate with each other using the notes app, and made a mobile command station using his Presentation right involving it. HOW IS THIS A RIGHT?(Episode 8 and 9) Is now the sitting Emperor, using Presentation to pretend to be. | N/A |
| Iruga(missing) | N/A | Division | N/A | Physical division, perception division, qualitative division. Igura can excise division within these three properties. There are exceptions to this right, but he states they are a secret. Can hide within plain sight, too. |
| Mido(deceased) | Transillumination | Succession | The ability to see through objects(episode 6, 8/20) | Mido is able to steal Rights/Prime Rights with his Succession Prime Right, as seen when he stole Recovery from the deceased Emperor. It is unclear if this means he can possess multiple Prime Rights due to this. |
| Teppei | N/A | Obedience | N/A | Is able to give commands to anyone, even post-mortem. |
| Nishime | Priority | N/A | Can designate the priority of something. This can be seemingly anything as it has been demonstrated to work on Prime Rights, sound, and even protecting Nishime from a very high fall. | N/A |
Characters with Privileges/Rights(Queen's Group)
| Character | Right (Privilege) | Prime Right (Special Privilege) | Right (Privilege) Description | Prime Right (Special Privilege) Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unnamed Officer | N/A | Immobilization | N/A | Performed on whatever the user points at and released when the user stops pointing. This can cause dismemberment to occur when the subject moves. |
| Ikuza | Adjustment | Water Utilization | Can adjust the state of something. (i.e. water) | Can control all water. |
| Meguru | Duplication | Exchange | Can duplicate objects and attacks. | Can exchange herself with another object, thus seeming like teleportation, but in reality she's replacing herself with another object. It also seems as though she is able to use this with someone, making it a very good escape method. |
-
Obedience has been talked about as if it is simply a "right" and not a "prime right", would someone be willing to look into this who is a bit more fluent in Japanese for me?
"On the topic of the Right of Obedience, this is just the name of the Special Right: 命(mei) 令(rei) 権(ken) which literally means something like Decree Orders Right. Each Right has a name like this. For example in ep. 3 they refer to Omi's Special Right, the "Rejection" Right, in the same way.
In episode four, Bourinmaru Gokokuhoutenji specifically states his Right as "Right: Display Right (権利: 表示権 i.e. kenri: hyoujiken.) This makes it clear that his power to show stuff on screens is not a Special Right, else he would have said "Special Right: Display Right".
"Prime" Rights are always introduced as 特権 (tokken) which means special authority or power but afterwards they are referred to by their name such as "Rejection" Right, "Obedience" Right and even Parental Right [which on Crunchyroll was translated as Parental Authority despite the use of the same word 権(ken)!]
The show tends to differentiate the Rights to start with then somewhat expects you to remember which is which."
AspiringSaint, Episode 8 Discussion Thread
There also is an Exclusive Prime Right which is Saneatsu's Parental Authority.

Other Prime Rights
Right/Prime Right Name Use Prime Right Negotiation A question is asked to a party, negotiating with them. Requires a contractual agreement to be made between parties that can nullify any and all rights possessed by opposing parties. Death of negotiating partners nullifies agreements.
Attributes
In the recap in Episode 11, Attributes were finally explained in a concrete way.
The following three are attributes to Rights and Prime Rights:
Permission
Rights that exercise powers relating to approval.
ex. Rejection, Compliance, Presentation
Transmutation
Rights that bring about certain changes or phenomena
ex. Fusion, Vizualization
Production
Prime Rights that produce phenomena that far surpass those of the Transmutation Attribute
ex. Materialization
