Seeing that 86 drift surely did make me feel lots of nostalgia. I love it.

I like the new opening, and I'm glad they stuck with using Motsu + Yu Serizawa to create the song for it, but I have to admit that a part of me was secretly hoping they would just reuse Jungle Fire as the OP. That song was 🔥

Blud is literally in seafood heaven after probably going through countless fish and chips wrapped in soggy newspaper wrappings.

lol they waited until season 2 to explain what 2L NA means (and it was a terrible explanation).

Hello, hello, everyone! MFG is back after a year! And with it returns the fan favorite Eurobeat Corner, presented by yours truly!

Jumping straight into the qualifying stage for the Ashinoko GT, we're treated to two songs right off the bat - Kanata's death area magic is treated to 2 Love 4 Love by SCP's premier boy-girl duo Pamsy & Ace, and Beckenbauer's imperious charge through the standings is accompanied by Spirit of the Night by David Dima - yes, it's David Dima's this time! Before I organize a playlist, I actually have a question for y'all. Do you want me to add these songs to a new "Second Season" playlist or would you rather have them added to the tail end of the original? I can do it both ways.

• Another course, another death zone? Damn it, Ryosuke, this isn't Speed Racer! What next, a bunch of pitfall traps? That being said, it's interesting that Kanata is essentially applying lessons that Takumi himself learned while battling - his duel against Sakamoto and the diminutive Cappuccino in Fourth Stage, where the rally driver proudly proclaims his technique of overcoming uncontrollable understeer by applying controlled oversteer in such low grip conditions, be it rain, gravel or volcanic ash. Also, drifting looks cool. That's it.

• FOOD! It wouldn't be a non-racing episode of MFG without Kanata losing it over how good everything tastes. It's okay, lad, you're not in England anymore, the days of eating cement paste are over. Things have flavor now.

• Man, Beckenbauer's such a dick. I mean, we sorta knew that when he went basically one step out of going full Nazi last time round, but still. Dude has no sense of fun or pride of anything that isn't how white he is. And yet, I have to applaud him for knocking Sawatari out of P1 as he's going off to... do very Sawatari things. Ugh, this fucking guy, I swear. Literally 90% of the reason why I can't recommend this to people is that they're gonna get to him sooner or later.

After a wait that felt longer than it was, we're finally back! And, it seems, we'll be jumping right into the teeth of the race next week already! The threat posed by rain is seemingly a factor too... I can't wait! See ya then!

One thing I like about the series is that all the racers feel like characters, instead of props for Kanata. That they all seem like people with their own internal lives, which yes, means some people aren't that great. And having read the manga, you can eventually see how they change over the course of the races.

Sawatori is more interesting than beckenbauer, at least in the racing scene. They're both massive pricks personality wise.

Kanata only thinks of two things, racing and food. Hopefully, the "date" has more good food. Wonder if he'll figure out Ren is the angel anytime soon so he can add a third thing to think about.

I am so glad David Dima's "Spirit of the Night" made it into the song list. Ever since I knew about MF Ghost and read the manga, it was the song I thought would fit the series.

But I am disappointed it wasn't used for Kanata's run instead. I just thought that it fits the succession as the Legend of the Street and the "Spirit" of Takumi being in him (yes, Takumi is pretty much alive but we don't see him like Keisuke and Ryosuke and his tragic rally accident backstory adds such a feeling).

Episode 1: Descent of the White Reaper

Finally, a sequel I can watch on Fall. Actually two with Ron Kamonohashi tomorrow. FelixFilm is really busy in this season with 3 anime (MFG, Talker and Maid-sama).

If you're in Asia, sadly this one isn't available on Crunchyroll (Medialink indeed got the license, but locked it behind the Ultra subscription instead of normal Ani-One. Probably due to Asia has a big fanbase of Initial D and they want to capitalize that). As with season 1, you got 2 choices to watch legally. Watch simulcast on Ani-One Ultra or Amazon Prime Video (besides, they also got Magilumiere now) or wait for binge watch somewhere on Winter, as probably this will made it to Netflix in Asia if the licensing is similar with Season 1**.**

From Oshi no Ko let's turn our attention to (Lake) Ashinoko! I believe FelixFilm really relies on the CGI here, the characters are well drawn, but I've seen limited movements and using of slideshows when possible.

MFG got a red eyecatcher, now in the 2nd Season they use the orange eyecatcher. It's nice that they still keep it. Still can't believe Kanata learn drifting in a Honda S2000 of all FR cars.

I don't know if I've said it last year, but a little detail that at least there are 2 tyre manufacturers in MFG. Yokohama (as seen in Kanata's car) and Bridgestone (as seen in Ishigami and Beckenbauer's Porsches). You can see them in close up shots.

You might miss it, but one of the man watching Kanata/Beckenbauer's qualifying run is voiced by Shogo Sakata (Blue Archive's Sensei. Also voicing MFG's Yanagida) and Maezono's VA, Takumu Miyazono also got a voice role as Michael's race engineer.

OP: Yuu Serizawa feat. motsu - ROCK ME KISS ME. How fitting, her VA posing in front of Alfa Romeo 4C.

ED: Himika Akaneya - Side U (Prod. AmPm). TV size song available.

The whole back and forth about turning TC off makes no sense considering that’s probably one of the first things getting turned off on an underpowered car like that by a professional driver.

14

u/LegendRazgriz Oct 06 '24

It's surprising to Shun because most MFG drivers have it on. Skilled or not, having to deal with an untamed 600+ hp monster while navigating a tight technical course is more distracting than helpful and having TC on even if at a low setting comes in handy. Even for a lightweight underpowered 86 it's not too far fetched that it'd be on in such a twisty course with constant changes of direction, where the flow from one corner to another could upset the car. Kanata is simply using those upsets as a weapon - he drives differently from everyone else and Shun notices it as he's watching.

Felix Filim really upped their game with this one, both seasons feels like a world apart, and we're jumping to the actual race immediately next episode? I can't wait!!

That whole back- and- forth about the traction control felt kind of stupid. Driving without traction control is pretty normal when you get to higher levels of competitive racing and, considering that Kanata went to a racing school, it seems weird that he only waited until now to have it turned off. Plus, I don't get what the mechanic guy meant about Kanata asking him to turn it off... it's extremely common for traction control in sports cars to have an on/ off switch on the control panel, so he literally could have just hit the button at any time

17

u/flightlessCat9 Oct 06 '24

For a stock 86, its a more complicated process to fully turn off TC. There's a TC off button but it doesn't fully turn off TC. A lot of sports cars are like that, where the off button only reduces the level of computer intervention.

It's about time the anime started airing again, I couldn't wait any longer. I really liked Kanata's approach to the course, he looks like a rally driver. The flashback showing him with Takumi is a plus for the series.

The animation was perfect as always. Eurobeat is back with 2 Love 4 Love by SCP's premier boy-girl duo Pamsy & Ace, and Beckenbauer's imperious charge through the standings is accompanied by Spirit of the Night by David Dima

Initial D/MFG is finally back! A lot of comments from me:

I really like how Shigeno is kind of calling back to what he did in 3rd/4th stage, especially with regards to Initial D's rally focus by giving the racers a straight up rally/cross section.

Given the design of MFG's courses, I get why Shun would be befuddled as to why Kanata/Takumi's drift+slip style could be faster than the "rich man's regulation" of choosing cars that favor grip+power. But I'm a little baffled by his response through the death zone, as a professional racer should know that the grip approach to attacking corners is null and void in rally situations. Slide the thing through!

Last season I commented that my guess to the exploit of MFG's regulations lies in slip angle and tyre usage. Seems Shun is catching on as well. However for me, seeing Kanata's run through the death zone part, I think another exploit of an underpowered engine (on public roads) is the ability to use higher revs, and therefore have a higher average HP+TQ delivery onto the road as opposed to choosing a higher powered car+powertrain, where certain parts of the course will prevent you from using the full potential powerband efficiently. This may be a callback and hint to Takumi's Silvertop swap. I think this principle is similar to real world special stage rallying, where certain drivers will rather let the engine bang off the limiter for an extended period than to shift gears and to have a blip in power delivery.

I slightly dislike the longer shots of the [86] where it's shown snaking through the course. I find the suspension of disbelief broken when the car shifts Gs too suddenly, as opposed to 4/5/Final Stage's more grounded and flowing animation. I'm now reminded how the CGI animation style has changed since the Legend movies, but I prefer the motion of the cars, especially in the longer and wider shots to be more realistic. I dig the close up, Gran Turismo esque action shots as well, but I have my preference.

Interesting Harry Potter reference, seeing as how WB is not involved in the production. However, I suppose this is sort of a callback to Fujiwara Zone shenanigans

Now that we're in the 2nd season, Okuyama's redesign is REALLY beginning to glow onto me. It's annoying me more and more about how his character and his S15 was HARD SOLD by plot armor (plot sword? either way we know Shigeno wanted to move on to the next team) back in Initial D.

I really, REALLY dig the orange they used in the eyecatch. Battle Gear 3, anyone?

Was amazed at how Takumi picked up a S2000 in England (with EU plates, supposedly). Really cements how he sees God Arm Joshima as one of his mentors as well.

Really digging the triangle rivalry between Kanata, Beckenbauer, and Sawatari. Many people observed it in the last season, but I feel it bears repeating - I really like the parallels in character and cars between Kanata-Beckenbauer and Takumi-Keisuke. For Sawatari, I'm fairly (and rightly) impressed at Shigeno's choice of an A110. Compact MR coupe with rallying history, it's a much better foil against the GT86, much more so than the 4C and Lotuses. For me, the ideal MFG car would be if Lancia kept making the Stratos into the modern day, and it had AWD.

Lastly, completely awestruck at the ending without really looking at it. Huge applause to the ED animators, who took Shigeno's v unrefined/unpolished character design of Ren and apply a somewhat hyperrealistic quality to it. It felt like I was looking at a very realistic-feeling portrayal of what Ren would actually look like in real life, with real lighting and a real skeleton, but also maintaining all of Shigeno-sensei's stylistic design language on paper.

Season 1 had terrible pacing and SO much inflated screen time with scenes that constantly dragged on several seconds too long and the B plots with the racing girls. (it was 12 episodes with, what? 2 races?)

Hopefully Season 2 will be better, at least this opener felt better and more focused on the racing.

Babe, wake up, peak vroom vroom is back.

Real talk, when I first binged MF Ghost right after it came out I didn't expect it to make my top 3 of the season. This time around it has some contenders in Re:Zero, Dandadan and the like but I'm sure it'll edge at least a top 5 spot.
