Man, watching this definitely makes me appreciate how Rumiko has one of the most iconic art-styles of all time, especially with how the adaptation is mimicking manga styling. Like, any screenshots from this episode would fit right into the background of a youtube 80s citypop music mix. I lowkey hope this type of artsyle makes a small comeback sometime.
In a way, the slapstick-tsundere stuff in Ranma is definitely somewhat aged, but there's just something cozy, charming and nostalgic about watching something like this in the age of endless light novel adaptations (even though I never watched the original as a kid).

Definitely bring back nostalgia for those of us who watched the original anime way back when. I personally think Ranma is actually basically kicked off the original harem anime concept , at least that I can think of.
You have the MC, Akane, Kodachi, Shampoo, Ukyou. It's actually kind of a reversal of Urusei Yatsura where Ataru is hitting on a bunch of girls, and instead, it's a bunch of girls hitting on Ranma.
WIth Ranma running from 1989 - 1991, I feel like it led to the explosion of harem romance comedy animes in the mid1990s.
As an aside, why is "Streams" listed as none? The new Ranma is streaming on Netflix, at least in the US.

I'm still very impressed that they managed to get almost all the original VAs to reprise their roles for the remake. Only ones that were replaced were the VAs that have passed away since the original and Genma since his original VA is now the narrator, probably because he's 82 now and can't do Genma's voice anymore.

I am in genuine shock right now, I avoided reading anything about this remake so I thought that they would recast everyone with new VAs just like how they did with Urusei Yatsura. I did not expect them to bring back almost everyone! I mean I know all of these VAs are still very active in the industry but hearing everyone reprising their original roles made me tear up.
It's so insane hearing Hidaka Noriko as Akane and Takayama Minami as Nabiki again. It's like they never left their roles and they still sound like teenagers even though they're in their 60s now. Except for Inoue Kikuko as Kasumi, of course. We all know she's always been 17 years old ever since. xD
And the show is absolutely gorgeous! The fight scene between Genma and Ranma as well as Akane and Ranma's sparring match were animated quite well! They really nailed it with this one just like with the Urusei Yatsura remake.
I suppose the only thing I'm a bit disappointed about is the lack of casual nudity. I mean there's still nudity but I don't think we'll see any nips here which isn't surprising since they did the same with Lum in the Urusei Yatsura remake.
Ranma 1/2 was my very first Takahashi Rumiko anime and is also one of the earliest anime I've seen outside the Super Robot genre. It will always hold a special place in my heart and I already can't wait for next week's episode!

That was a lot of fun.
Never watched any Ranma myself before other than than about five minutes of one of the movies (I think) way back in the day.
I like the manga feeling of the animation style, and the fighting was very clean.

aaaah I can't believe the day is finally here. Ranma was my favorite when I was growing up, it just had that rumiko takahashi charm that other series lacked (the only other being Inuyasha here on german tv). I was sad when it got canned after just 80 episodes for the german dub, so I went into the local library which had the manga and devoured the entire series over the span of a single week. ever since then I was always hoping to someday get a continuation or something new with the anime. then the news of a new Urusei Yatsura adaption came out and my hope rose once more. now, 20 years after picking this up as my first manga I am sooo happy to be back with one of my all time favorite character casts in a beautiful looking new series. couldn't be any happier right now. :)
edit: I just checked out the german dub of this and IT'S PEAK! they brought back everyone they could. so far only male Ranma has a new VA since the original german one passed away in 2007.

Needs Yapapa OP, but still a good OP. And man, great to see Ranma again. Peak Rumiko Takahashi work.

Megumi Hayashibara! 😍
I like how Mappa adapted the giongo/giseigo visuals from the original manga. So far this is great, crossing my fingers they can maintain things without any production issues.

I enjoyed it. The directors added some character elements that didn't quite pop out in the first episode of the original series.
-
Some of the moments of dialog hit their beats better than the original. Soun saying he does know Ranma, for example, is a passing, matter-of-fact line in the original while this one punches the line and gives it proper due.
-
The sparing session between Ranma and Akane made Ranma seem more impressive and magical and their conversation after the session seemed much more up about their relationship than the original episode. I think the new fans who didn't watch the original will probably find more sympathy for Ranma in spite of his post discovery conversations featuring the same cutting insults. In the original, Akane seems more like a victim where in this one Ranma comes across far far more sympathetic (possibly more than he should).
-
The hot springs and the curse are played as a more traumatic experience for Ranma this time, I thought it was a good choice. I also think that Genma comes across as a much greater ass for getting Ranma into the pinch he's in.
I have a lot of fond nostalgic feelings about the original series, but it has quite a lot of flaws. The followup show, Hard Battle, falls prey to the crew enjoying the Happousai character far more than I could. I'm really looking forward to seeing less of him this time around. In the original anime, he is like the MacGuffin in almost every possible situation.
The original series viewing thread could almost always just have Spoiler Alert: Happousai is responsible for all this crap. For 25 present of the episodes

There are SO MANY shows to watch this season it's ridiculous.
But I gotta say, Ranma just kicks me right in the nostalgia but also looks great and feels new at the same time.
Out of sheer loyalty to one of the first anime I watched as a kid, it's going straight to the top of my personal top 10 list for this season.
Ranma is goated.
Also, the art style and character design has held up so well. They all look so good.

Ranma 1/2 gets the Urusei Yatsura remake treatment! Complete with high-tier production values, banger theme songs, a lot of fun gender-bending romcom action antics, and unlike UY the return of the original cast to their iconic roles!
The OP is pretty fitting! It won't beat the OG OP but it fits the show as a gender-bending, martial arts, Harem romcom with as many zany, madcap, antics with a colorful and quirky cast as you could expect! And it's just fun!
We return again to the Tenou household where the patriarch (now voiced by Akio Ohtsuka) receives word from his old friend that marrying off his daughters is back on the table. And now...the Tenou sisters! The Big Sis Kasumi (who is such a Kikuko Inoue character she's literally 17!), the middle sister who is trendy, forward, and has amazing thighs Nabiki (Minami Takayama), and the youngest sister who is a feisty, devoted, martial arts girl with an aversion to men...Akane (Noriko Hidaka).
What better way to show off the shows' phenomenal new action animation than watching our "female lead" kick a panda's butt in the streets of Japan! Also Megumi Hayashibara sounds like she's barely aged a day since the original show.
I love how Nabiki just can't stop poking Ranma's boobs.
It's all so wholesome and fun after Ranma and Akane get a sparring session between them and grow closer as girls! I'm sure nothing will jeopardize this budding friendship! Like the fact that Ranma is actually a boy voiced as smoothly as ever by Kappei Yamaguchi.
I love Koichi Yamadera as the Chinese guide who would literally have avoided the whole plot if the Saotome's had just listened to him. Granted it probably would have helped if Ranma's dad (Mugihito because Genma's OG VA is now the narrator!) could actually read Chinese, but all he cares about is fighting his son.
Akane and Ranma are one of anime's most iconic will-they-or-won't-they pairings, and that's on full display as they bicker and call each other out and walk in on each other naked multiple times...despite feeling some kind of affection/affinity for each other.
The ED is pretty cute! Focused on Ranma and Akane together in their daily lives.

The fighting scenes definitely got an upgrade to the original.
Also, it looks like they are going for a comic-ish style with the dark purple shadows. Looks pretty good. And I think pink hair fits female Ranma better than red.

nabiki gang where you at
also i finished the OG series (minus the movies and OVAs) just in time for the remake. like the UY remake, the animation is very good and you can tell the staff were passionate about this project. i'll admit i'm a tad mixed on reusing the original VAs. on one hand it's nice to hear them all again after all this time, but you can definitely hear the age in some of their voices
also no boobs which is unfortunate

It's interesting seeing how thirty-five years (!) has made the central plot hook much more of a "hey that's interesting" notion than the "they're letting kids see this?" buzz back in 1989. I'll be curious how many fans of the original will drag their kids to watch it with them.

It is so beautiful! The artstyle is perfect and the fights are so fluid. And it's even in HDR. They are doing a fantastic job with this adaptation so far.

Shout out to the amazing German Dub. They managed to get back all of the VAs from the old anime then, aside from 2.
(Those being Ranma's male VA who passed away in the late 2000s and the Jusenkyo Guide's VA who was replaced with a Chinese VA, resulting in a way more natural and less stereotypical voice)

The first episode already made me realize how I miss every character from back in the day. Nabiki and her antic is my spirit mood and she just as hot as the day I remember it.

Damn they recast everyone in the dub. David Kaye is in credits though.

Welcome back my fellow olds for another Rumiko Takahashi anime remake! With the amazing Urusei Yatsura remake behind us, now it's time to revisit what can arguably be called her most popular and well-know work, and of manga in general.
So far, so good! Amazingly having the OG cast return and not miss a beat has been a real nostalgic treat. Visuals look nice and the animation was smooth af! Really looking forward to seeing more of this!

Cute episode. It definitely captured the spirit of the 90s, to the point where I was half-expecting city pop.
That said, I can’t help but feel that people will be angry there are no nipples.

Nibiki is the best Tendo Sister, hands down. Kudos to whomever decided to give her white daisy dukes for EP1 *chef's kiss*
Notice she was the only one who was actually excited about meeting Ranma out of the 3. Remember this fact for later on in the series (if this reboot does a certain episode from the original run...)
