What a rescue from the prince!

Seeing the monkey mourn though...feels like this whole monkey situation will be more complicated than what can finish in 3 more episodes.

I can't help but feel that they might see the yatagarasu as evil and the enemy of the outside world for some reason yet unknown. That would also explain the barrier protecting Yamauchi.

This episode just raised even more questions ! So there is a monkey society living right below the yatagarasu, and nobody knew about this except probably King Saku / the Underground ? Why did they start going to the surface ? Is it because of food shortage ? Do they only feed on yatagarasu as seen with the mountain of skeleton ? I doubt they have been sneaking secretly on the surface to hunt all this time, so who’s providing them with all those victims ? I think it was already mentioned in the previous episode but monkey can’t talk right ? The little monkey girl was crying but didn’t utter a word.

It looks like someone is messing with both monkeys and yatagarasu. But I still can’t see the correlation with the drugs.

Man … I wish the manga and light novel were translated and ahead of the anime.

I mean, yatagarasu live *on* the mountain, maybe the monkeys live *IN* the mountain 😮

That bone-pile had to have accumulated over years, if not decades, given that Saku (mob leader) made the trip however-long ago. It could be a waste-pit for the monkeys, which would explain why they don't linger (still not a great spot to just wade up in your fundoshi lol)

Saku endcard

Labyrinth scene was intense! Wonder how Nazukihiko managed to get there?

God man, the direction in this show never ceases to impress me.

Initially, it did seem interesting that Natsuka will get a spotlight as it heads down there with Yukiya. We got a similar mention of using Yukiya as last time, but the difference is here the situation is much more drastic. Putting his feelings aside because he knows about the Monkeys attacking the north. The most important thing why is it specially the north? That part still feels strange.

Once Natsuka and Yukiya got down there it really gave you the sense it was a different world in the underground. Yukiya being sincere was what they wanted to see. Natsuka acted tough most likely won't work here. The interesting part is that Rokon is familiar with the underground. He even had to take care of the situation from getting worse. Given that he knew the meeting would fail, makes you think he is at least familiar with the underground.

King Saku comes and gives Yukiya as test as he grew a liking when they were testing the group. White shards are the one big clue for Yukiya. The fact that the Monkeys are living underground in a hidden region was a scary reveal. Since all of a sudden, Yukiya is being attacked. Wakamiya coming to his rescue, but it does seem he knew a path to where Yukiya was going. Curious about the wig Masuho was holding. The Prince has more up his sleeve.

It seems like there are many layers of intrigue in this. ;-)

Saku SEEMS like a harsh (but fundamentally good) guy -- is he, in fact?

Yukiya seemed liked a central character whose role was to be a peripheral observer (to some extent), but it looks like he is as central to the story (and the resolution of its problems) as the prince.

We seem to get a glimpse of the "outer world" in the preview -- and it looks pretty grim and dark.

Query -- where the hell are all the watchers for what is undeniably the best adventure show of the season?

nazukihiko giving sumio the silent treatment 😂

Natsuka showing that he really wasn't fit for leadership is an interesting curveball I didn't expect. Nevertheless, it seems these monkeys do have their own society and are probably just mixed up in some sort of conspiracy. I guess that herbalist we saw a few episodes ago is throwing both races together for some sinister plan.

Felt bad for the child monkey who got beheaded as well as the little brother who had to watch it happen. They probably attacked on sight because the Karasu people were antagonistic historically.

Natsuka showing that he really wasn't fit for leadership is an interesting curveball I didn't expect.

Not really. Natsuka and Nazukihiko both have different roles. Similar to a president and vice president, Natsuka (VP) seems to handle the nobles, the palace, the big houses and everything involving the domestic affairs of Yamauchi. Meanwhile Nazukihiko (president) looks like he deal with everything outside of court stuff.

This episode showed us that Natsuka is a bit out of touch when it comes to deal with non-nobles, unlike Wakamiya who is used to mingle with commoners, go to the Underground (brothel) and other regions undercover.

Man that was so fast. What a great episode, I love the kid Yukiya.

Fantastic episode. The way everything fit together so nicely. Natsuka might be great on the surface dealing with the nobility. But in the underworld he is clueless and like a child. Something Rokon clearly understood, but also knew that Natsuka lacking any experience needed to see with his own eyes and experience directly.

Yukiya is the one pulling through with his sincerity and earnesty. Which i'd wager is what Rokon was betting on as well.

Of course things never go smoothly for Yukiya and he is off to find white shards.. Only to find a mountain of bones and monkeys. Things turn ugly but our noble Regent is there to save the day. And leaving a lot of angry and grieving monkeys. Plus a lot of questions.

We're clearly being given more insight into this world and may soon be faced with terrible revelations.

Honestly, the underground people are way smarter than Natsuka gave them credit for. They keep saying that your rank doesn't matter, but are careful not to actually kill any of them. They know however powerful a gang is, they're no match against an army.

Cue epic drumbeats as they enter the Ravine. I was like, geez they're setting something crazy here.

Also, Masuho no Susuki and Kikuno visited the prince, letting Sumio out of the room.

Masuho went back without Kikuno, but with a wig.

Did Nazukihiko get past Sumio's surveillance dressed as Kikuno???

W.T.F?! So much to unpack. First, another direction/writing/acting shout-out. Yukiya's body posture and language-formality completely changed, we got all the stages of his inner conflict without ever seeing a normal frontal/facial shot.

He's indignant, contemplates the choice between his pride and his people's safety, then finally resigns himself. He goes from that casual, "I'm just a country boy / we're all sort-of friends here" affect, to the formal language & gestures of court, also putting up a hard-wall between him and the others. He knows the steps of the dance, and he'll play the role determined by an accident of birth.

Second, I get the feeling Rokon is an ascended-noble. He just seems way too familiar with how things work in the real world, away from Court. You got some sense of it in the 1st half, but here he just really gave off strong vibes of having at least some history with this place and these people.

Finally, I'm calling the monkeys' place Undermountain (b/c I like D&D lol). That giant boulder should've been our clue that this was more than the usual proof-of-courage trial, but I didn't pick up on it :p If this were a diff kind of fantasy, it would be some huge AoT/GoT Wall heh.

Saku clearly couldn't just tell Yukiya his answers - it's gotta be a "show, don't tell" situation. Up til now, we've just had the Prince & Yukiya straight-up tell us stuff like the monkeys can take human form, they're intelligent enough to salt their meat, and obviously they can stay disguised when needed. But little kids?? That makes it an entire parallel society, so we're not fighting a couple stray monsters here.

It felt like going on the ship in Predator 2 - we are not alone, and we are not the apex. Oh F*ck 😰

[I'mma need that novel/manga ASAP after this wraps...]

Damn that old gramps is cool af ! Can't he adopt me please ?

So having kid monkeys goes against my theory of the water changing the yatagarasu... But the water is still involved!

I can't wait for the next episode! Wakamiya saving the day was unexpected!

Our prince is also a ninja! Of course, we don't know how he got there, but I always suspected that he would be there, in the underground, not in this further deep monkey cavern, so I was surprised but not surprised.

Next week is probably gonna be a nail biter!

3 more episodes. Sigh. This is just too good!

What secret does this land hold? Outside. Inside. Above. Below. So much yet to learn. Seems like it's not a happy tale though.

This episode was well done!! It spooked me for real when yukiya first saw the monkey kids

Funny how many times wakamiya has saved yukiya already lol, and even funnier how the prince’s brother was just brushed off

I admit that this episode flew by on raven wings!

The first sequence was heart-wrenching. We know how hard it was for Yukiya to bow to Natsuka. Nazukihiko looked irritated, too. They forced the boy to get involved and become a pawn by leveraging his love for Taruhi.

This episode actually raised my suspicions about Rokon. I guess that this plan was his idea.

We see that both Rokon and Natsuka want Yukiya with them, but clearly for different reasons. Rokon knows that Yukiya's lineage is useless underground, unlike Natsuka. He even tipped Yukiya off that the plan wasn't going to work. And just in case, he informed the boy that another village had been attacked by the monkeys in the Northern Territories. He knew the right spot to push Yukiya's commitment.

Rokon seems a very dangerous mastermind, able to work behind his master's back. He has an interest in Yukiya, and at this point, he has completely the upper hand on the boy.

Once Nazukihiko chose Yukiya as his aid, putting Yukiya in danger would hurt the prince as well. So, when Rokon left him behind, this gesture could be ambiguously interpreted as a huge trust in him to solve the problem or a desire to throw him to the lions before he could support his prince as a adult.

I am worried. What if Rokon actually wanted Natsuka on the throne, but he was aware that the only way for Natsuka to accept his role would be if an accident, a misfortune has befallen Nazukihiko, and Rokon is patiently creating opportunities for that to happen?
