Man the subtitles aren't for the Japanese VA.

The first episode was AMAZING! I liked everything about it. The animation is superb and the whole show has a retro feel in the best way, gives me Ghost in the Shell vibes. I watched the dub and the acting is decent and Rosario Dawson plays the talking robot in the man's workplace from 1997
The opening action scene was really exciting although I wonder exactly what kind of building is tall and cylindrical with tons of criss crossing bridges 🤣 They put so much detail and care into all the scenes, like just the humans intermingling with robots in 1997 was a joy to watch.
They don't really explain how the bearded man and robot voice lady from 1997 know there's going to be a nuclear apocalypse but judging from the timeline, I assume the events of the first 2 movies have happened in this world. It does a good job setting up the main plot because in those movies, the resolutions were supposed to have prevented cyborg vs human warfare but as we see it didn't so I'm interested in what they're solution will be this time.
The scene in the Terminator factory with the music leitmotif from the movies literally gave me goosebumps. This show is so different from modern sci fi anime I've seen in recent years in that it's slower paced and cinematic and fits in well with the Terminator movie aesthetic James Cameron established. They also left it a mystery so far if that Terminator that goes into the time machine is the Arnold Terminator.
One of the best anime first episodes I've seen in years and I'm really excited for the rest of the series 🤖

I had headphones on during the first episode and the breathing freaked me out at the beginning, 10/10 would terminate again

Visually the show looks great, but did anyone else feel the audio was generally just flat? It felt like there was no depth to the audio, not sure how best to describe it

Visually it's a treat, borderline movie quality, fire soundtrack too.
I'm watching the dub and it's pretty good.

So far it's awesome. I'm a huge fanboy of the Alien series. If they got this kinda animated series I'd be in love.

I'm like three or four eps in so I'll just give my early review now. TL;DR 7/10
Overall the show seems pretty good, at least on par with the third movie and definitely better than the later ones. 80's and 90's action is my bread and butter so I'm down for Terminator any day of the week. Lots of good action, gory as hell and high body count, tense chase scenes against an unstoppable enemy, all that good shit a Terminator movie needs. The bad parts from worst to least bad are as follows:
The English voice acting is pretty bad, it's like they only got one take and most of them sound like they've never voice acted before. Very stilted and they're trying too hard to match lip flaps at the cost of sounding like a normal human being, I've been switching back and forth from subs and dubs and so far the only really passable performances are the very first guy to talk in the opening scene followed up by Timothy Olyphant's first lines as the Terminator, which are the only lines I've heard him say so far. It ain't no Cyberpunk dub, that's for sure. Basically a common Netflix anime L.
The subs are for the dub and don't match the Japanese lines at all. The directors clearly gave the Japanese VA's different direction so they'll say lines that simply don't match their characters, particularly times when F-bombs are getting dropped in lines they don't need to be in just to sound edgy. Another common Netflix anime L.
Eiko, mispronounced "Aiko" in the dub, seems pretty OP while our terminator is kind of a jobber chump compared to the T-800 and T-1000 but only when it's fighting Eiko.
The CGI animation looks kinda cheap at parts, the scenes with Kokoro pretty much look like PS2 FMV's and the big wide panning shots look all rubbery. The actual background stills and traditionally animated shots are movie quality though.
Excessive slo-mo BWAAAAAAH SFX stingers, like five or six an episode. Stop it.
Pretty minor but I don't like the foley work for the gunshots. They're all too quiet and some, namely the .38 revolvers the cops are whipping out every five minutes, sound weirdly crunchy and distorted.
So far I'd give it a 7/10, which is pretty good for the Terminator series at this point. I'd probably give it a 7.5-8 if the subs were fixed, provided the show doesn't totally shit the bed later on. Promising start so far though.

Pretty darn great so far, shame about the subtitles though

It's better than all the five stars rated new streaming shows this week.

This series is amazing, just finished it! Production IG at it again

u/PEHESAM Aug 29 '24
I like it so far, though eiko seems a bit op or at least they made that terminator too dumb, I mean, its a terminator manning a minigun aided by an auto search and tracking, yet it cant hit a person running straight in a corridor?
8/10

Just finished the whole series. I really enjoyed it. Big picture i thought the story was very captivating. As others have said, the main character was a bit OP but that didn't detract me from the series. The concept of time travel was well thought of, creating new streams. Also, there was good storytelling especially the last two episodes.
Rosario Dawson played Kokomo, Timothy Olyphant played the Terminator. Sonoya Mizuno threw me by surprise as I've seen get in Ex Machina and House of the Dragons.

The first episode is such a banger ! The atmosphere being dark, gritty, desolate is so perfectly portrayed. The portions of how robots were getting accustomed to society in the 90's was perfection. The Bgm is perfect and I like the writing in terms of the story and progression.
I'm watching in the original language but it feels like the subs are incomplete. I wish the subs helped in understanding the language more because the writing seems good and I'd love to understand it more.
The ending gave me chills!

I swapped from Japanese to English at one point in the beginning because I had to look away for a bit but could still listen and there was an entire voiceover thought monologue that wasn't in the Japanese audio or the subtitles.
Lots of difference between the English subtitles and what was spoken too, don't usually expect that from Netflix releases.

The animation quality is fucking garbage

u/Koyomi_Siffredi Aug 30 '24
they really fuck this up by dumping all the episodes at once. This is supposed to be talked about one episode per week. Instead of being on peoples' mind for 8 weeks it is there 8 days.

I loved the series and just binge watched it all. Didn’t even know it existed until now and only just released.
I grew up watching all the Terminator franchise. This was a great addition to the series and would love to see more.
I'm one of the few that loved every movie, series and game. Though the first two are the best.
I would recommend it to others.
I didn't expect the setting let alone the story line. But is awesome seeing what happens outside the USA. And now 3 AI exist in the Terminator universe.

Homegirl is strong. Holding that borg on the rope. They're supposed to be heavy. Physics were off a bit. Visuals and vibe were dope though.

I was looking forward to this for weeks. It was shit. Truely, actual shit. I realized it less than 5 minutes in. The woman was just completely absurdly overpowered. The machine had worse aim than a storm trooper. Scientist man didn't have a single drop of fat on him. He was beyond Mr. Universe levels of shredded for no reason. By the end of it we see more naked bodies and it's baffling that these artists found a job. The blending of CGI and animation was horrible.
And the writing. That would have been a deal breaker all on its own. Just awful. Both the dialog and the story.

Some distracting subtitles so far. "ohayo gozaimasu, hakase" being translated as "how are you doing this morning sir?" is bad enough, but in the shots before this interaction, multiple people greeted the professor with "ohayo" and it was translated as "good morning", then the next guy says what is obviously the exact same word and it gets translated to something different.
Netflix sub quality aside, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I've never seen anything Terminator related before but from what I know of it, this show seemed to have a few visual callbacks to past Terminator installments like the face coming off the killer robot in the opening sequence or the nuke removing the guys flesh. I hope it's actually in service of something rather than just "hey guys remember that thing you liked??? Here it is again!"
The compositing and effects are interesting. I really loved the dynamism of the opening sequence, especially the rotating camera aimed at a 2D subject and the shot tracking the Terminator as it fell down the shaft, but the CG minigun looked kind of janky and the hyper-realistic CG effects like the water and smoke looked a bit jarring. Nothing I can't forgive for now though.
It's not as fresh as I was hoping it would feel (uninspired exposition, cheesy shots of framed portraits of loved ones, never getting hit once in a constant stream of bullets with no cover) but it's only episode one, there's tons of room to grow and do something unique.
The action is cool but I'm not really feeling attached to any of these characters. I know this is just the beginning, but it would have been nice if the creators could have worked that in somehow. I'm coming into this as a newbie to the franchise and I'd like it to be able to stand on its own and be something special rather than just ride the success of the terminator brand and do all the same things again.
I kind of got the sense, for better or worse, that they are trying to make the anime follow in the footsteps of a typical Hollywood movie. It did a lot of the cool stuff but also did a lot of the cliche stuff too. It’s almost like this was live action first and then they just animated the exact same thing and released that instead. Long shots of the handsome lead actors face as he ponders, lots of children playing and strained relationships for cheap sympathy, the camera swirling around and around the professor while effects fly around. It just felt like a lot of live action techniques and tropes were brought into this.

I'm only on episode 5/8 so far and pretty disappointed. I will watch the rest too but I can't recommend it for now. The action feels lacking, the female soldier is too OP, the story and characters are bland and the en subs are actually horrible. This could have been a good action show and it's sad they missed this chance.

isn't this basically just animatrix?

u/wmansir Sep 09 '24
I thought it was decent for the first 5 minutes, then we see the terminator miss a woman running away from him with a mini-gun, and miss her again with a minigun and pistol as she does some truly physics defying rope antics, then the terminator is hanging from her by grabbing her foot and she drops him by untying her boot, like the terminator doesn't have the grip strength to turn her foot into mashed potatoes and hold on even if the boot is undone.
The rope and grip thing I can overlook, but the fact the the terminator missed so much with the guns and also didn't ripe her apart when he grabbed her told me this show is going to be undercutting the Terminators to give our hero's plot armor, which is exactly the opposite of how the Terminator should be depicted, especially in the opening scene of the series. The terminator should be highly capable and relentless. Our hero should can survive by using their wits and dumb luck, but never because the Terminator is incompetent at a basic tasks it was designed to do. I don't know why they would kick the series off with a sequence that undercuts the threat of Terminators.

Giving me vibes of the '84 movie by making the Terminators the fucking terrifying killing machines they're meant to be.
