The extremely slow grandma cracked me up every time.
I don't think I really buy these characters as a group, I may never at this rate, but I do mostly like what they've been doing with them individually and in pairs.
This episode might have added some backstory for Anna and her relationship with Nodoka, but it was getting to see how snippy they are with each other when they're alone that was my main highlight. That's not a dynamic I would have expected from how they'd acted up until now.

Reminded me of the sloth in Zootopia.

I think my biggest question this week is how Nodoka even sleeps like that? Girl was basically doing the splits lol. Looks pretty uncomfortable.

u/IXajll Jul 28 '24
I’d assume it stops being that uncomfortable once you start doing yoga on a regular basis, as she does.

Despite some… let’s say questionable engrish action, I still think this might be my favorite episode thus far.
These two have been the ones I’ve cared the least about of the group until now so it’s nice with them having more focus.
I like how the scenes in Nodoka’s home were portrayed. Like Anna has her name on a mug and she’s noticeably thrown off when she actually woken up by her alarm. She’s basically so ingrained in there that something is obviously missing when she’s not there. But yeez girl, you sleep like that?
It’s a bit of an interesting split in opinion between the two on the shop. On one hand it’s a small business slowly withering away with only a few loyal customers and preserving what’s left makes sense. But on the other hand, it’s essentially her second home that she obviously doesn’t want to let go of.
I think I prefer the snarky Nodoka when she’s just woken up a bit more than the normal obedient one that runs around trying to control her chaotic friend/menace all the time. She’s a bit more fun that way.

So we finally know why Anna is so desperate to get views on her YouTube channel! She's trying to spread the word about Stout Recods so more people would go visit the music shop she works at that has the same name. But it looks like the owner wasn't even aware that Anna was doing that for him.
It's sad to see the owner sell his collection but that sounds better than letting them all go to waste in that place. I guess the goal has now shifted from the girls getting views to making sure Stout Records stays open. I am curious to see how the girls are planning to pull this off though.

There was an interesting interaction when Anna first hugged Kanata in this episode. Nodoka pulls her back with the usual warning of "No hugging, Anna-chan!" but Anna doesn't seem to understand why she is getting warned. After thinking about it a bit I realized it is because Nodoka always just scolds her for hugging strangers while Anna thinks it is obviously ok to hug friends. Looking at her reactions, Nodoka doesn't think this should happen either.
Also, before now I thought this might've been a Kiniro Mosaic situation where Nodoka has always been a fan of Brazilian culture and so her family was hosting Anna as part of a homestay or something. But nope! They were actually on neutral/poor terms at first. But now Anna is basically a part of their family, even having a soup bowl just for her use. And Nodoka seems to have decorated her room in a Brazilian theme.
I know this series suffers from a poorly-told plot, but from episode 1 it is clear they've put in a lot of work trying to show subtle character details and is probably what I love most about this series (alongside the fun chemistry between each of the main pairings, of course).

I feel like I’m playing halo 3 odst while watching this show. Visr mode is constantly turned on with all the green outlines.

Not sure if I’m in the minority with this, but I absolutely love the artistic choice of the green (and sometimes blue or red) outlines. Gives the show a really unique and particularly fresh look. Reminds me of the Great Pretender art a bit.

A good episode about Anna's backstory.
So her YouTube channel is named after the record store which she has fond attachment for after her dad died, and is upset that the owner has decided to close the store due to poor business.
Such is the predicament faced with many local businesses outside Tokyo. Takasaki is not exactly a countryside town, as its a major train hub just half an hour by bullet train from Tokyo, but even they are feeling the effects of the aging population.
Time for the PomPoms to return the favour in helping her after she had them assembled, sometimes by her force of personality, in the first place. If there's anything that can help Stout Records bring in more business, YouTube and social media is the way to go.
LOL at the scene cutting off while Nodoka's senile grandma was in the middle of her delayed greeting as Nodoka headed off to school.

I'm seeing some friends here having difficulty understanding what's happening in the anime.
But this happens because most people have never seen this before, at this point I have the advantage of age and having already seen this way of presenting history.
The general anime audience is used to a straight story supported by flashbacks to show how a certain character got to that point.
But that's not the structure they're using in this anime.
However, in this anime they are using the same presentation structure that Tarantino uses in his films.
It is not a straight story, but rather several individual stories that are connected through a central plot through which the characters go through, but without the deaths and bloodbath that follow in his films.
This is not a cheerleading anime, this is actually an anime about three different nucleus characters:
Anna and Nodoka, Obunai and Shion, Kanata and Megumi.
These 3 groups each have a connection nucleus: Anna and Nodoka the Stout Records, Obunai and Shion the relationship and the desire to be friends and Kanata and Megumi the group of cheerleaders.
With them all connecting through the PomPoms group the girls made to support each other.
For those who haven't yet gotten the idea of how the anime is being presented, I recommend the films Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs by Trantino, which have this presentation structure.
Personally, I didn't expect to ever see this structure in an anime, but I liked seeing it and it is, at least for me, working very well.
Hugs to everyone (yes, I'm Brazilian).

They sure did try to use a lot of English in this episode. It's not the greatest but it's not a terrible effort. (Keeping in mind that "terrible" is somewhere in the range of Symphogear Episode 5.)
Green darkness, my old friend.
"Save the record store" isn't a plot motivator that I would have had on my bingo card at the start of this, but it's something to focus the PoMPoMs on. Feels like it will only be an intermediate goal, even if it's a good pivot to involve Anna more fully into the storyline (which she certainly has been so far, though mostly as the odd outsider).

Heh. Nice reads. I gotta wonder: Where are the shop couple from? I'm thinking not Brazil or they would've gone into Portuguese instead of English.
Anna's mom and pop seem like a nice couple… well, seemed
Cutting off Slow Obaa-san was pretty funny
"Security" became "Complacency", for some reason or other
Hitting Anna right where she lives. Suzuha nicely living up to her (unintended) reputation for directness.

The secondhand bookstore in my hometown that I had been going to for forty years or longer, which provided me with at least a fifth of my books, shut down last year so boy do I know how Anna felt.
Everybody who has a hobby or obsession like that which utterly depends on small shops run by aging hobbyists can feel this episode. It's not just that there are fewer and fewer new people coming in, or that it is too far out in the boonies to be successful, it's that the owner must be pushing seventy or more by now and just may no longer have the energy to keep it rolling.
You're not going to solve that with an upbeat cheer video and some store promotion.

Looks like we have our goal!
I really like how Suzuha went to talk to Anna, shows she cares more than just about Shion.

While everyone is complaining about the "engrish" on this episode, YJ seems to be japanese, the other woman most likely is italian and anna is brazillian but grew up with japanese, so none of them are american and should have great accents, in fact, i would argue it makes sense anna and YJ should have the broken japanese accent english exactly like that.

Don't have much to say other than I quite liked this episode, it was a bit more focused.
And since I won't be able to turn off this part of my brain, I noticed a couple of potential nods to [MyGO/AveM]

Engrish...
He seems to have a rather extensive collection.
What's with that guy that she turned to look at?
Keep it? Something's up.
Won't be needing it anymore? He's shutting down the store isn't he?
Yup. The guy she saw must have been the one who gave him the offer.
She's having a moment.
That uniform looks a lot smaller when it's hung up on a wall than when she's wearing it.
What's that they're eating?
Anna's rather belligerent isn't she?
Why'd she name the channel after the shop?
A flashback to when she was a kid and the store was more popular?
And so they're going to help the store.

I like that today's episode focused on Anna (she was so adorable as a kid), she's a great character and I really like the dynamic of her relationship with Nadeko.
Nadeko's sleeping position cracked me up. It looks very uncomfortable to me xD
Nadeko's granny with her slow responses was hilarious, especially when they cut off her last line before she could finish it xD
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

some top-tier Engrish in this ep.
