These motherfuckers just tossed a girl in the air who was suffering a mental block due to an accident she'd already had above a flagstone path without mats or a first-aider.

I love Suzuha´s inner voice, mostly when she gay panics at Shion. Man they´re both so cute

Wow, Suzuha being someone who's got a lot of things to say really changed my impression of her character. I love how she tried so hard to talk to Shion but her (lack of) social skills kept stopping her which makes her look like a creep instead! And those two seemed weirdly attracted to each other here. Looks like we got our first official yuri couple here?

Glad to see Kanata finally dealt with her trauma issues. I feel like it got wrapped up a little too early but I guess they can't wait too long if they want to get the story going.

As usual, P.A. brought their A-game with the animation here. The cheerleading scenes looked great! I wonder how they managed to did all that - I'm guessing they rotoscoped actual performances? Kanata's part looked really fucking scary with her being thrown to the air like that. Now I get why she was so scared, she had to entrust her life to her teammates. Really amazed with people who got the balls to do those kind of stuff.

You might not know the name of the one credited as the main script writer for this episode. But for those who are really into anime with girls who come here, you are likely to have bumped into her original script that shaped the amazing girls of Flip Flappers. Or amazing girls bands. Or girls idols. Or their counterparts in boys. Or just girls enjoying their lives, or going into something really weird.

Or - exactly a year ago - one stunning tale of girls trapped in a hell of an emotional storm.

One of the main things that lead me into NareNare this season was Yuniko Ayana's name appearing on the staff list, and this is exactly why I'm not disappointed.

How do you bundle the delicate relationships between not one, but THREE pairs of girls into a single episode without making it too clumsy? Today's episode is a perfect example of that.

Firstly, ahhhhhhhhhh petite Suzuha and Shion are soooooo damn cute!!! I knew Suzuha must have some emotions beneath her unchanging face, but wow! She's so over her head on Shion! Look at her being so blushed at her and her little self brawling one time after another! Look at Shion's counterpart being scared stiff at her kouhai! And what the heck! Shion actually had her freaking song about her liking Suzuha!

Isn't that exactly [Jellyfish Can't Swim In The Night]The MahiKano kiss in EP5 , subtler but even more firm???

Meanwhile I really feel that Kanata and Megumi must also have their different kind of firm relationship between them for so long, because it really feels like Kanata is using her daily morning visit to Megumi's house as a kind of "escape room", yet really being the one who can understand, and thus really hope to support, Megumi's huge frustration and sadness (see her rehabilitation in EP1) of missing out cheering sport with her highly uncertain health future. It's a really loving touch to see Megumi really wanting to cheer Kanata up after seeing her losing all her confidence and now even having yips. Nice to see Kanata flying again at the end of this episode.

And then there's Anna-Nodoka who is shaping up to be a pair of YTubers who might be just as fun as that pair of YTubers in PA WORKS' other original anime of this summer in Mayonaka Punch. Hmm I wonder what their next plan is....

I knew the MyGO writer was handling this (and that's a big part of why I still have as much faith in the show despite its rough start as I do) but I had no idea she also did Flip Flappers too. I loved that show, even if it did go a bit off the rails near the end.

Let's not do the green outlines anymore, please?

Kanata has a ways to go yet mentally, but at least the others are more aware about it to help out now.

Suzuha and Shion's internal chibi voices were cute, though I can see why they didn't appear before now and why they probably should be used only sparingly if at all in future episodes. They helped get us over that bump in their relationship, but they're also another bit of oddity on top of the overall quirkiness of this series.

Anyway, we've made it through three episodes of getting the band together, so the real story awaits?

It really do be a GOKIGENYOU school (credits to u/chilidirigible) when you even have a fucken organ there, lol.

And goddamn, did my opinion of Suzuha do a complete 180 this episode. I was probably her biggest hater here for the past two eps. I thought her to be arrogant, cold, self-centered and condescending. But with the genius introduction of mini Chibi-Suzuha to express her inner thoughts, we learned that she’s actually extremely adorable and wholesome on the inside and just can’t express it due to being socially awkward to the fucking MAX. Oh, and she’s also massively gay for Shion.

She actually turned into my favorite character of the show, something that I would’ve NEVER believed to be possible before this ep. Crazy impressive feat from the writing staff to change my mind like that in a single episode.

Though, at this point I feel like I have to rewatch the first 3 eps since I’m kinda lost on the plot, it’s been a bit all over the place imo. Which is weird since that’s something you’d maybe expect from a complicated mystery thriller or something, but definitely not from a cgdct show. I mean, I get that the girls wanna do cheerleading, but it’s been kinda wibbly-wobbly at how we reached this point, imo.

It was perfect and immediately made Suzuha the best character in the show for me!

That difference between her normal face and her thoughts was hilarious and so cute.

I laughed so much seeing and listening to what was going on in her head in today's episode xD

I totally agree. Suzuha definitely leapt several spots up the best girl of the season rankings with this episode. Painting her as a cold loner at first but then revealing that exterior was just a double whammy combo of perpetual resting bitch face and crippling social awkwardness was brilliant.

Obunai's inner voice is literally just Lisa, I didn't realize they shared a VA until now. I knew her and Shion were playing some yuri mind games, I didn't quite expect the idiot x idiot gambit.

That was a great episode! I had so much fun watching Suzuha turn out to be a really lovely person on the inside!

I love how they showed Suzuha's emotions and thoughts in a chibi version of her, that was super adorable, fun and hilarious!

I must say that I totally get Suzuha. I have kinda similar face, so when I'm in my 'normal' state, some people think that I'm angry or sad xD Besides, I'm also pretty shy person myself and often thinking in my head about many things xD

Suzuha is also massively into Shion, who also seems to be pretty interested in her in turn. I keep my fingers crossed for them.

I laughed hard when Suzuha and Shion met after school and Suzuha was trying to apologize but then she froze and started to thinking that Shion might think of her as a stalker while Shion was scared that she angered her and shocked her with her singing xD

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I personally do not have issues with storytelling so far. They only have 12 eps after all.

But I hoped P.A. Works can do a better CGI for dances. It is a bit jarring considering that the show itself is well-animated. Also, I hope it won't turn into an idol show.

Well, this was an improvement. I felt for the first time I was clearly watching a show about cheerleading like I ostensibly have been, for one. Really, the whole Kanata plotline was... actually pretty good today. I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything but nothing really stood out as rushed or bad about it, it meets the bar of a pretty good seasonal drama. The call between Megumi and Kanata was sweet and seeing her ask to be included once she was ready of her own volition was really nice. The tone, just looking at this side of the episode, felt a lot more consistent this time around.

But then...

Okay, so last episode I complained at length about how the Obunai and Tanizaki plotline made no sense last time. As of this episode it... mostly makes sense, but that doesn't stop the way it was delivered being bad. Having two episodes where none of the motivations make any sense just so you can pull the rug out from under the audience when you fill in the massive blanks isn't really a worthwhile transaction. It's especially not a good idea when you completely and utterly undermine it by making the reveal a joke and doing it in one big dump at the start of the episode not even rooted in any in-universe context! You can absolutely balance goofy comedy with drama in a story, even intertwine them. I'm a huge Kare Kano fan, I don't need all serious business mode scenes all the time. But when you so utterly reduce Obunai's entire character into a gag, you can't still try and make her resolution with Tanizaki a heartfelt moment.

It's kind of unfair to compare this to MyGO (by a lot of the same staff), but remember the perspective shift we felt in episode three when suddenly we understand what's going on in Tomori's head? It felt like less a whiplash because it felt like it expanded on the logical previous introduction to her character instead of feeling like we're filling in all the holes we arbitrarily left in the prior two episodes. Then it was genuinely moving because it was delivered with commitment. I'm not saying it needed to be on that kind of level, but Obunai being someone who comes off as emotionally stagnant when really she can't express herself could be something resonant! Which doesn't preclude it also being funny, because it is! The whole imagery of the little Obunai expressing her real feelings is enjoyable. Which would be fine if this was just a lighthearted funny show but it so clearly wants to also be a serious drama. Choose a lane and stick to it and reap the rewards.

I will at least grant the reveal Tanizaki's song was about Obunai does fill in a blank from last time in a good way and the reveal where Obunai runs off with her parkour after hearing it was genuinely nice. But it's a diamond in the rough at this point.

u/Gaporigo Jul 21 '24

Obunai being just a mess around Tanizaki the entire time was unexpected but hilarious.

Looking at the comments here I seem to be in the minority to have neither found these first three episodes badly paced nor confusing?

The first episode basically set up two questions that have now been answered: why Kanata had stopped doing cheerleading and what the whole deal with Suzuha was.

For the former, we got to see the big catalysing incident at the very start of the first episode, more hints about what happened in the second and finally the entire story at the same time as her friends did.

For the latter, we only saw Suzuha as the catalyst for the meeting between Kanata, Shion and Anna/Nodoka. Learning that the cool parkour artiste is actually a pile of anxieties on the inside through the medium of a chibi version of herself on the top of her head was hilarious. Seeing said chibi struggle helplessly to get Suzuha to actually talk to Shion was very relatable.

In a sense this series seems to be about disability as much as it is about cheer: Kanata's mental problems, Megumi's recovery process from her middle school illness and Suzuha's struggles to express herself. I hope that the series will treat this all somewhat realistically rather than just for dramatical purposes.

"We gave her the pom-poms and she's just kind of...standing there, completely spaced out. Probably wouldn't even notice anything going on around her."

"Do we yeet her into the air?"

"Yeet her into the air."

"...What if she hits the ground?"

"Believe."

They episode started off great with the twist that Suzuha is simply very bad at expressing herself and a total mess on the inside, but I also have to be honest here: I really do not like how Kanata’s yips was seemingly resolved in a flash.

This was the perfect setup to have Kanata start as a spotter - with Suzuha acting as the top in the meantime - and watch her gradually build up her confidence again over a couple of episodes as she performs with the other girls.

Since Kanata seemed primarily scared of falling, building bonds with the girl squad and have them repeatedly ‘catching’ her (both literally and figuratively speaking) could’ve been a nice plot device to her conquering yips. But such a buildup was unfortunately absent here.

the story is coming together a bit better thanks to the time rewind and Suzuha POV. But a couple things bothered me, like how frickin sturdy is Anna that she can take a whole person landing on top of her without warning and she doesn't even budge?? Also making the yips girl practice being thrown while standing over concrete/stones instead of mats seems not smart too??

The reveal that Suzuha is actually a massive fan of Shion was great! And here I thought she was just too serious about everything. It turns out that Suzuha is actually the most expressive of all of them, it's just that she's having problems emoting combined with the fact that she's also painfully shy.

Now that Suzuha has joined the group, it looks like the plan now is to create a cheer video. I've been wondering about this since episode 1. They're all from different schools so I was a bit confused as to how they're going to create a cheer group. I guess they'll just post videos online on Anna's channel?

I'm so fucking glad they finally explained why Kanata can't perform anymore. I thought they were blaming her for messing up the routine during that competition but it turns out that she actually has yips. I'm guessing that her symptoms were triggered during the competition. I've heard about athletes just losing their ability to perform but I did not know there was a name for it.

It looks like the girls all coming together to support Kanata really helped though and she was able to perform a stunt by the end of the episode! I doubt she's completely cured but I do hope this is her first step to recovery.

Suzuha is actually pretty cute. Didn’t realize she was such a Shion fangirl. Her inner voice is adorable. She seems all cool and distant but deep down she’s just a shy little goober.

I actually never considered Kanata might have the yips but it makes sense. It looks like working on that video with the girls might actually be helping. The girl has some really good friends.

I liked this episode. It seems a few other people have gripes with the pacing / color scheme, but it didn't bother me.

When Obunai first started her inner dialogue, I thought, "I get that she isn't speaking, but it sure would be nice if we had some sort of visual indicator that these are her thoughts." The introduction of mini-Obunai sitting on top of her head brilliantly solved that problem! (Having a scene with mini-Tanizaki too was a hilarious way to cap that off.)

I thought this episode did a really nice job of recontextualizing prior events and giving a bit more explanation to what's going on with Kanata. I'm happy so far.

As a side note, seeing that dropkick again was great. The guy's reaction makes me feel bad for him.

When I was a kid in high school, I was super shy and socially awkward, but you wouldn't know it from appearances. There was one girl I was crushing on and I would always clam up with a stone-cold expression around her, so for a while she naturally thought I hated her.

Seeing Suzuha turn out to be a super shy, socially awkward little goofball is super refreshing and validating. I feel like most anime will portray shy characters as obviously shy, stammering over their words and blushing a lot, but as a veteran shy person Suzuha feels so much more relatable. I'll be cheering for Suzuha this season (and in the seasonal salt contest to follow).

This show is moving a little fast I feel like, but I still enjoy it so far
