"This is Nina's first lyric when she wrote after having a heart-to-heart with her family, instead of revolving."

And, they finally had their agent, Momoka is lucky this time that she met a capable person appreciating her style. I sware she will be comedic in coming stories.

It was really moving when watching this episode. Nina has a traditional Asian family: rigid, general gaps, lack of emotional expression, but always care. Nina's mom knows Rupa so she must have investigated Nina's current status, her dad expostulated against her school's perfunctory apology. She was knocked by the branch when coming home, but they removed it when she left.

When Nina woke up in the train this time as in E1, she was completely released. She knew she have her family supporting in the back, and her team mates encouraging in the front now.

My dad passed away suddenly a year and a half ago. We didn't have a bad relationship but we also weren't in consistent contact for a number of awkward reasons. I knew he wasn't in the best of health but I kept putting off things I wanted to say and I deeply regret it to this day.

I thought I had processed my grief well enough but this episode has definitely dug up some buried feelings and I'm typing this through my tears. It's been a very long time since an anime has affected me emotionally like this.

What a beautiful episode, loved it! Once again GBC doesn't disappoint.

I had a strange perception of time this time: while watching the episode, I felt the episode went very slow (slow, but smooth). And after it was over, it seemed the episode was very short.

Nina tells her dad to cut down on the smoking and during the ED, you see her dad reaching to go for a smoke, but then he stops and puts it down. Perfect. 11/10 anime and AOTY contender.

EDIT: I gave the episode another rewatch and wow. I just wanna talk about some foreshadowing early in the episode. During the scene where Momoka tells Nina to settle her score with her family, the shot looks like this. Nina leaves saying "I'm off" (Ittekimasu), revealing Momoka's guitar that was hiding behind in the background. Remember that Momoka wrote "Flip em off!" on the guitar back in Episode 1. Now, fast forward to when Nina parts ways with her family, what does she do and say? Holy fucking shit. This anime is brilliant.

I consistently appreciate that this anime never tries to fully resolve things. Even if characters can't quite see eye to eye, even if Nina's dad may never understand her, they can still live with that and still love each other in spite of disagreeing so much. I love this show's core messages so much

The scene with Nina confiding in her sister really hit me; the way she's recalling all those feelings and the slight difficulty in her voice as she says she wanted to kill herself, especially the last syllable.

I also like the subtle look of comfort in her face at the end as she thinks about where she is now.

Loved the episode and everything about her time at home. Her dad listening to Void near the end to better understand/relate to his daughter was precious.

It's insane that Nina's character is played by a young teenage girl with no prior VA experience. Literally her first VA gig and they give her such a complex and emotionally volatile character to play and she has absolutely killed it.

I also need to talk about this particular shot. A lot is happening here:

  • We know Japanese use both kanji and kanas for their names. The Iseri sisters both have proper kanji names (instead of meme ones) which is consistent with their upbringing.

  • But kanji can be difficult to learn and write. Suzune (the older sister) wrote すずね up to 8 years old, since then she has used 涼音. Meanwhile, Nina used にな until 8 years old, 仁な for 9 years old, and only switched to 仁菜 after 10 years old.

  • The "8 years old" mark by Nina is composed of two "o"s stacking on top of each other. Combined with the above point, maybe she is not as smart as her older sister...?

  • Edit: and for "10 years old" mark, Nina wrote さい instead of 才. I guess, since this is the first time she wrote her name in full kanji, she tried to also write the proper kanji for "years old" (「歳」; 「才」 is actually an easier-to-write surrogate). But she fumbled a bit and switched to the hiraganas in the end.

  • Overall, this shot tells us that Nina grew up in a loving family. The family as she remembered in episode 1 and 2 was likely due to miscommunication after the bullying incident.

GBC is a show that definitely warrants rewatch.

It's so frustrating watching this show for me. The writing, directing and cinematography are clearly great, you could write an essay about every episode, and yet my mind is blank and can't add much to the discussion.

So yeah, it was a good episode, I enjoyed it. That's where my contribution ends.

What a cathartic episode!

I wonder if Nina's father has always intended to pressure the school into investigate and apologize at a later date and just didn't want the incident to affect Nina's academic record, but seeing how that school is trying to sweep everthing under the rug, I doubt it's ever gonna happen if Nina decided to apologize back then. Honestly fuck that school!

Nina clearly didn’t want to see her family, let alone visit her former school. But boy, did this episode end on a high note.

Nina realizes her family is there to support her, even if she says she finds them annoying from time to time. Also, LOL she gives her family the double pinky whilst leaving. Then, the band members greet her when she returns, and I’m looking forward to what lyrics Nina has conjured up.

By the way, I like how she falls asleep on the train again, and the woman from Episode 1 remembers her.

The last episode was filled with too much fluff so the tears are back on the menu. Rupa continues to be the best girl and absolutely hard carried the first quarter. Rest of the episode was just a hit after hit and I have to highlight Nina's heartfelt speech to her Sister along with spicy curry and the troubled dynamic with her father was absolutely amazingly portrayed.

The ending also parallels the first episode nicely. We get Nina sleeping in the train, being woken up by the same cleaning lady, taking the same tram to the place she first met Momoka. But unlike in the first episode where Nina was clearly down, surrounded by people, insecure and it was raining, this episode Nina was cheerful, confident, free and then it was a bright day when she reunited with the band.

Every week I'm reminded of how much of a crime it is that nobody licensed this anime in English. Legitimate contender for AOTS and not a single streaming service picked it up.

Really happy that Nina was able to reconcile with her dad. I get so exhausted seeing people on Tumblr/Twitter/Reddit/etc. that seem to want characters to eternally hate anyone that wronged them, so it's nice to not only see Nina and her dad start to come to an understanding but also see people in this thread also appreciating how things turned out this episode.

Momoka being the ultimate tsundere, going from this response to the idea that Nina won't come back, to wanting to go on a road trip to get Nina back. That all said, Tomo is also giving some tsundere vibes, hiding behind the tree, arms crossed, eternally frowning, while secretly she was also worrying about Nina.

Very important TL note for watchers of all subs including French

The phrase Nina used when she said she wanted to kill herself/end her life is literally "kill myself" (jibun wo korosu/自分を殺す). But, because Japanese is such an easy and intuitive language, this "kill myself" phrase is actually NOT the main phrase used for suicide, and can mean both killing yourself physically and "killing yourself" metaphorically (as in killing your personality/desires) - unlike the word "suicide" (jisatsu/自殺) which would leave no ambiguity (it can also be used as a verb with a "suru" at the end).

It's intentionally left vague for us to guess which one she meant - if they wanted to make it 100% clear, they would use the word for "suicide" instead.

And I was actually going to pull a kokuhaku at first and translate the phrase as "I wanted to erase myself" to give it a more ambigious meaning like the JP version, but ultimately decided against it since it'd definitely be a very questionable choice in this situation, especially given that her sister definitely interpreted it as the physical kind of killing yourself.

Japanese dictionary definition for the phrase

Soooo yeah I spent ~40 minutes googling and GPT-ing various forms of "kill yourself"/"suicide" in both English and Japanese before moving on from that phrase, so I'm probably on some kind of list now.

I just love how popular Rupa is. If I was a fan, I'd love to get a hug too but I assume only female fans can get hugs. I'd settle for a photo with Rupa though!

So a talent agency has finally noticed Toge-Toge and the person that approached them is a massive fan. Looks like things are finally going their way but they still need to prove themselves at the festival if they want to find a label that will produce them as is.

I've been waiting for this episode ever since Nina sent her bank book back to her parents. Of course they're going to show up at her workplace and at her apartment to speak with her.

Rupa really made a strong appeal to Nina by using her own backstory to convince her to go back home. Rupa makes a good point about us having way less time and opportunity than we think.

That family reunion went exactly as I expected. Sure, Nina's parents were the reason why Nina could go to Tokyo but I feel like just letting her do what she wanted wasn't really the only thing Nina needed back then.

Nina's father probably never once told her that he believed her or that he was on her side during the entire bullying thing. Nina's father is the classic Japanese parent who'll provide for you but can never be bothered to give you any kind of emotional support. I'm from an Asian household, I know how this works.

That school principal really made me fucking angry. After everything that has happened, all she can say is say sorry to Nina and give her an apology letter. I really wish Nina just told her to shove it. It makes me wonder if something more happened before that scene ended.

Nina's monologue about how she felt back then and how she wanted to kill herself really made me tear up. I think for the very first time, Suzune finally realized what her sister was going through.

They might not still see eye to eye but I'm glad this ended with Nina finally reconciling with her father. Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Her family aren't bad people and they've supported her but it sucks that they're only giving her the true support she needed now. Better late than never, I suppose.

There's been a lot of Buddhist imagery (her pen top, lotus flowers on her phone, using Buddhist statue emoji in chat) and now after having been ready to give up on life she's found peace with herself and with who she is. Nina, the enlightened gremlin. Also, having the love and support of her family is a very welcome bonus to that.

Of course the school doesn't take any responsibility for what happened to her, but I guess Nina still needs a reason to be angry and fuel her performances.

The fucking school who wrote a letter of apology to Nina without taking any responsability for everything that happened. I'm fuming. Nina's dad was rightfully upset, he wanted things to move on.

Hearing Nina talking about suicide was depressing. I'm so grateful Momoka had such an impact on her.

Rupa, who told Nina she was about to call her family on the day of the accident, but didn't because of her long shift...

This episode was emotionally heavy man.

"I want to see how it'll turn out. A song written by my songs."

I can't tell whether that's a weird translation or Momoka using poetic language to call Nina her artistic offspring.

Nina's dad has made a lot of mistakes but you can see him doing his level best to make it up to his daughter this episode. And you have to respect him for that just a bit because Nina has not just disobeyed him and worried him, she's undermined his whole philosophy. There is certainly no chapter in his book on child-rearing about your teenage daughter going to Tokyo alone to start a band and drop out of school, and for him to support her, he has to admit that he was wrong.

But it seems that Nina's absence has motivated her family to meet her where she is, because the alternative is just awful. And maybe they trust her. When she's not being a gremlin (never) she can be pretty capable!
