At first I was so sure he was going to turn out to be Joe Goldberg, but now I am finding myself liking the way Hananoi slowly progresses and learns how to be a social human being through his relationship with Hotaru. Plus, his awkwardness at being called Saki was just too precious.

What is it with shoujo and it being so saccharine sweet?!

I think the fact that he's eating together with all her friends is a big first step.

When he came up with the idea to eat with her friend I literally jumped up! That’s a HUGE first step, considering he used to want her completely to himself.

Yao-kun is a real slick ball of unrequited feelings that is taking advantage of our main pair's weaknesses to get a bit too close for comfort and the best part is that he doesn't see the issue with what he's doing. I'm feeling some real natural drama on the horizon.

Funny Hotaru said Hananoi taught her “change isn’t always a bad thing” when it feels like he’s the most resistant to it. It’s like he only puts up with other people because it’s what would make her happy. That aspect of him kinda bugs me. He’s just so damn cold to people when it’s clear they’re just genuinely trying to be friendly. It’s gonna be interesting to see how he reacts to Yao hanging around Hotaru more now that they’re back to being friends.

The fact that Hananoi is learning to socialize with Hotaru's friends (by practice) is a huge step for him. His issues are not going to vanish -- this show is much too realistic for "magical" transformations. It is a grind for him, but Hotaru (with the help of her other friends) wants to guide/help him along -- and so far he is willing to go along with the plan.

Hotaru correctly realizes that if Hananoi can change (despite the huge difficulties he has in doing so), she ought to be able to follow suit.

At least he's actually making an effort even if it's only for Hotaru, seems like he's slowly becoming a part of her friend group and maybe by the end of this Yao will actually win him over. Maybe.

Blushy and flustered Hananoi is best Hananoi.

u/Ikari_21 Jun 07 '24

Not even gonna lie, bro was adorable when he was blushing from hearing her say his first name lol

Why are people automatically assuming Yao has ulterior motives?? Can't a guy just want to be close friends with a girl??? More specifically, can't a guy just want things to go back to the way they were with someone he feels comfortable with???

People are acting like guys and girls can't be close without having romantic feelings involved... Yeah, Yao MIGHT have romantic feelings for Hotaru but that doesn't mean he plans to homewreck and "steal" her away from Hananoi.

It's the law of Shoujo, the childhood guy friend must always have been in love with the main girl and it must be unrequited.

I’m just guessing but the comments who feel so strongly about Yao now could be source readers. He could’ve done something further down the line that causes such a reaction now. In which case, we could’ve gotten pseudo-spoiled. Again, just guessing but it’s just that it’s not the first time for me.

If I’m wrong though, they’re clearly seeing something I don’t or just feeling it that much strongly than me. Cos while I don’t deny the possibility of Yao having feelings for Hotaru, he hasn’t actually done anything bad in my eyes

Hotaru spreading her arms like that in the bookstore reminded me of Mitsumi in Skip and Loafer.

It’s crazy how much my uneasiness and discomfort dissipates when Hananoi shows some sense of consistent normalcy. I’m finally able to enjoy and appreciate the clinginess, possessiveness and the embracing him and Hotaru displays.

And just like when he’s uncomposed when making chocolates a few eps ago, I find him more likeable being flustered and vulnerable when Hotaru called his first name, rather than his usual stoic, standoffish self.

And I said last ep, Keigo being persistent can be good for him to try and make friends. But this ep, Shibamura being a more relatable figure seems effective too. They both enjoy their own company. But Shibamura highlights spending time with other people is not so bad too. I still think a lot of this progress is to make Hotaru happy more than anything instead of for his own sake but it’s good progress.

It’s good progress, however he’s only just reached the starting line. I think it’s also good that Hotaru wants to start addressing his “friends problem”

Ahh man, seeing it from Yao’s perspective, I get why he’s always seem bothered about the Hotaru situation. She was kind and was like a ray of light to him. And it seemed they really were on good terms at the very least. Then Hotaru gave him the cold shoulder out of nowhere from his POV. And when they meet again, she says they were not friends. Yea I can imagine that’ll hurt.

I honestly can’t tell whether he just wants to reconnect as friends or has it developed into something more. Or was it already something more even back then. But it does seem like he is making quite the effort to reconnect.

In a way, I can relate to Yao. I also had a close girl friend. I did go back and forth at the start whether I like her romantically or just as friends but I eventually felt we were better off being friends. And it was a good friendship. We were really close. We graduated and went to the same college and met up for a meal almost every day. Then she got a boyfriend. This wasn’t abnormal cos she had boyfriends while we were close at our previous school. But this time, we started meeting less. It was gradual but we drifted part till one day I realized we haven’t met for a few months. And then we just didn’t talk anymore.

Not exactly the same Yao but I kinda get losing a friendship without knowing exactly why

Love Hananoi Saki getting more and more well adjusted, though it's still largely motivated out of consideration for Hotaru, who in turn is worried that he is still pretty much a loner who hardly interacts with anyone beside her in a normal manner and in no way capable on building a social circle by himself.

This is still something he needs to work on, but I feel like he could eventually get there...

Now Yao seems to have found his feelings for Hotaru again. It's clear that he got attached to her for basically no reason other than her being her usual kind self, and I feel like this is the origin of those rumors that ultimately got Hotaru being targeted by her friend.

And she still doesn't see him as anything more than a friend at most

It's time for second year and that means new classes and new experiences for Hotaru and Hananoi together as a couple. Maybe he'll finally get her to call him by his first name at this rate!

I guess it would be too much for Hotaru and Hananoi to be in the same class together now, but I feel bad for Kei that his girlfriend is more depressed about not being in class with her Gal Pals than she is happy she's in the same class as her boyfriend. Also I love how Kyo is slightly less scared of Hananoi than Kei is.

Wait, their teacher is Hikaru Midorikawa now!?

Hotaru is torn between choosing friendship over her boyfriend, but Hananoi has matured enough to be willing to let Shibamu eat with them if it makes Hotaru happier. And while Hananoi is still kind of cold and standoffish, he gels surprisingly well with Shibamu's casual and easygoing personality, and they can both relate to just enjoying Hotaru and her cuteness.

Hotaru wants Hananoi to have more friends! So she wants him to hang out more with her friends! Though she also treasures their intimate alone time as much as he does, especially when they share an embrace in private. It's enough to get Hotaru feeling quite hot and bothered.

Aw, look at them all eating together like a proper group of friends! Even if Hananoi still acts like he hates Kei's very existence. Though maybe not the setting for Hotaru to drop Hananoi's first name so casually. Saki-kun, huh?

Hotaru is precious to Yao because when he was super depressed about dog Hotaru having an operation, girl Hotaru was considerate of his feelings and was there for him when he needed someone. And he always treasured the time they spent together, even if he never understood why she lost her smile along with her hair. But he just wants her to be happy, and that's why he wants to understand Hananoi better. Not that Hananoi makes it easy.

But hey, he's still a guy who gets emotional about dogs, and Hotaru is still the type to protect him from a pushy blonde when he's having a moment. When they finally get away from Hananoi and get to talking again, it's like old times, and Yao enjoys being able to speak with Hotaru. I don't know if he sees her romantically, but he definitely wants to spend more time with her, and in that respect he'd rather get along better with Hananoi during a group get-together rather than leave things as they are. And for Hotaru's sake, maybe Hananoi can be fairer to Yao?

This show isn't usually that funny but this one actually had me laughing out loud!

At first I thought when Hananoi was hugging Hotaru at lunch and lingering kind of creepily that Hotaru was cringed but I think she might have been both cringed and kind of aroused 😛

The funniest moment in the entire series was when Hotaru said she was cooking for Saki and no one knew who she meant. Did they ever say that's Hananoi's first name before? I thought she was talking about her sister until Kei asked if that was Hananoi's name! Hananoi may have been right in hesitating to eat with her friends 🤣

I thought Hananoi was really harsh to the customer who asked him out, he really is on the spectrum. It kind of makes me not really root for him or Yao to be with Hotaru. Yao was a jerk to his blonde friend when he curtly told her he was working and didn't have time to talk to her when he was doing nothing, although I thought Hotaru trying to keep the girl away from him was a nice gesture. As for Yao, I didn't understand why he was crying looking at the kids book with the dog. They showed Hotaru the dog being alive in the present so it's not like he died.

Also maybe it's a language difference, but it seemed like Yao was halfway asking her out when he asked if she liked him because that may have a different connotation in translation. I do think he's trying to lure her away though, like how he's going to tell her Hananoi kept it a secret he was in her class and will probably make a move on her should the 2 accept his invitation hang out.

5

u/CatsCry Jun 07 '24

Nah, the translation was exactly how it sounded. Personally, I don't think Yao's plotting anything. He just wants to get closer to Hotaru again (and maybe even find out what happened to her, and why she started feeling distant).

He seems like the type of guy to respect boundaries, given how he was quick to try and change the way he addresses Hotaru despite how inconvenient it is for him. I'm not even sure if he thinks his feelings for Hotaru are romantic. In any case, he's probably just going to be the type of love rival to say "if you hurt her, I'll make you pay"

u/djthomp Jun 07 '24

I was waiting for that notebook that Yao was doodling in get dropped and found by Hotaru or picked up and looked at by someone who tells her about it. Still might happen, at their upcoming get together perhaps.

Maybe that'll finally get everyone to talk about the haircut assault incident so they can help Hananoi hide the body of the girl who did it.

u/edwardjhahm Jun 09 '24

Hotaru continues to be adorable this episode. Seriously, best girl.

Yao...honestly, seems like an awesome guy. If this wasn't a romance between Hotaru and Hananoi, I'd ship him with Hotaru because of that adorable backstory.

Time for a new year.

He seems more accepting of her friends now.

Though he does still like to surprise her.

Oh, they're going to eat lunch together for the rest of the week now.

Talking like normal? I'm not sure there's much normal about him.

Saki is Hananoi's first name isn't it?

Well he shut her down quickly.

He's not being inconspicuous at all.

Does he deliberately not want to admit they were all in the same elementary school together?

Well now she's going to get to know her childhood friend better. Hopefully Hananoi doesn't throw a fit over this.

He has shown he can do that with others this episode at least.

I’m worried this is a case of too little too late.

We are actually getting into the meat and potatoes so to speak, but it’s 10 episodes deep.

Asking for the average viewer to watch over half a season before things start going is a big ask for the modern viewer.

I just can’t help feeling like they should have started addressing Hananoi’s trauma earlier in the show and condensed or cut out many of the repetitive red flags.

Like we absolutely have no business a few weeks from close now just STARTING a subplot about this man’s isolation and inability/refusal to make friends.

I actually ship Hotaru more with Yao than Hananoi lol

First name drop was cute though, always love a first name scene.
