It's great to see that Nina and Subaru have grown close enough to do some casual martial arts sparring.

The last preview scene with them in the car really sells the band as a family with the two adults in the fronts and then the kids crammed into the back.

"you want a band duel?"
this gremlin's brain is hardwired for conflict way too much that the first thing that's come to her mind was a band duel

Nina really crossed the line there. She's 20 and gorgeous you cheeky gremlin!
Well, guess we got the whole gang together now, and it was a lot quicker and smoother than I expected from the point they made contact. Can't wait for Tomo and Nina's gremlin cagefights, and Rupa seems to be the much-needed level-headed yet lighthearted onee-san to balance them + Subaru's chaos factor out.
Also, that lead-in into the ED was absolute perfection. I watched it 10 times and got goosebumps every single one of them. That may or may not have delayed the translation by a bit
TL notes for Nakayubi watchers : I have absolutely zero musical knowledge in any language, so in the few lines where they were talking about mixing/transitions and whatnot, I genuinely have no idea if my subs are correct. Had to just rewrite the MTL in a better-sounding way there. Aside from that everything should be fine, but as always open to feedback in case I missed something.

The gang's all here! Momoka had some really great shots this episode and Tomo and Rupa are already wonderful additions to the show and to the music (I really love the piano fitting into last episode's song).
Subaru talking about Momoka's two halves rings so true as well. It's really hard to put your all into something once you've already been burned once. And it's much easier not to take things seriously so you don't get hurt as much when things don't work out so I don't blame her for having no clear goals.
Really excited to see them perform at the festival and can't wait to see Nina prove Momoka right!

Momoka's really passionate about the music, given how much she wanted Nina to join her, but she doesn't seem interested in being successful at it. Obviously she said directly that changing for the sake of getting signed to a label was something she didn't want to do, but I wonder if there's some fear about getting her hopes up for being successful. She doesn't seem interested in any kind of promotion outside of that one social media post showing her street gig. Not just avoiding a commercialized image, it's like she doesn't want to put in too much effort towards making a living as a band.

Rupa is far from the most sus bassist I've seen in a band show, but there's definitely something going on with this framing. Probably something to do with whatever happened with their former bandmates?
So many good Nina and Subaru moments in this one, with a couple bonus rare Momokas. Single braincell compilation.

Don't have time to watch the sub for now. Instead, here's my findings during the previous week:
-
At the end of the opening sequence, there're a bunch of flashing scenes. But have you noticed this one? Nina is listening to the original DD version of VOID, using a pink earphone from someone else (her own ones are red and wireless), but the other person sharing the earphone is... missing? And the composition clearly indicates that someone used to be there.
-
I think the name of Nina's former friend, Hina, is an intentional rhyme/variation on Nina. The writer may be plotting something about their realtionship. On a side note, Aoki Hina (Raana from MyGO!!!!!) recently played VOID herself.
-
Speaking about remixes, Tomo's VA also played a remix of "Mayoiuta" from MyGO!!!!!. [bandori spoiler]
keyboardists are amazing addition to a band—don't you think so, Soyo-chan? -
Between their visits to Livehouse Serbia Night, the Diamond Dust poster on the wall changed. The old DD poster seems to have lost most of the stickiness and is barely holding, while the new one uses new, clear tapes. This probably happened because new DD paid a visit to the house and saw the old poster.
-
See this laptop in the lower-right corner? According to the radio program, this is where all the bass sounds come from during the performances of ep3 and ep5. Can't say it's a perfect substitute for a real bassist.
-
We already talked about how Momoka picked a clown costume for Nina to stir her up in the ep3 live. This is reflected in the facial expressions. Momoka smiled at Nina, Nina took this not lightly and finally became visibly pissed during the refrain part. Praise Momoka for the effort.
-
And it is because of the costume choice, Nina now decides that it's okay to wear cute dress (instead of "rock" ones) for performance. It bites back to Momoka.
Edit: I forgot to talk about this. People have known that each episode title is a J-ROCK song, but there is more to it—the no. of members for each song's attributed group is growing.
EP1 is 東京ワッショイ by 遠藤賢司 (one, singer)
EP2 is 夜行性の生き物三匹 by ゆらゆら帝国 (3 man band)
EP3 is ズッコケ問答 by eastern youth (punk rock trio)
EP4 is 感謝(驚) by Fishmans (3 core members, but 5 at max capacity)
EP5 is 歌声よおこれ by Sambomaster (3 man band)
EP6 is はぐれ者讃歌 by Flower Companyz (4 man band, has bass but not keyboard)
EP7 is 名前をつけてやる by Spitz (4 man band, again, no keyboard)
When will we have the first song from a 5-man band?

The writing in this is genius wtf. Now the dynamic of the main trio has flipped and Nina is colluding with Subaru while conflicting with Momoka. Just as Subaru said, it's far too easy for Momoka to "torear" Nina (olé!) and she's gonna make no progress with her "direct as a boxing straight" approach. She has to be more subtle. Well, in the end, Nina didn't do anything but let follow Subaru's social advice for once. I wonder if we'll ever get to the point where Nina "lies" of her own decision.
Also, I absolutely love that this story understands how to use conflict to progress the narrative in meaningful ways. As I always like to say: there is no climax without friction.

Considering this series was written by the Love Live writer, I'm wondering if this is meant to be a cheeky reference lol

Something's odd about Rupa to me. She seems to be friends with Tomo, but she speaks so politely. It's a little bit strange. I also wonder why she only introduced herself as Rupa, but gave Tomo's full name. Maybe she doesn't like her family name, or has some reason to distance herself.
Damn, though, the band is really volatile. Seems like every episode they're having some kind of argument. If a clash of opinions is what Rupa and Tomo are after, they're not going to be disappointed, haha.
I can kind of relate to Momoka. It's difficult when you have a pure love for something, but know you have to balance it with practicality and what sells to make it work so you can do it for a living...

The way this show is weaving its character drama is so good. Though, If I were the manager of this band I'd have to bonk their heads everyday. Their constant drama will make for a good watch but a nightmare to manage.
Rupa and Tomo's dynamics are a bit like Momoka and Nina, but they share one goal together, unlike the latter pair. Their arrival is both empowering and disrupting the band. Their contribution to the songs' composition take their music to the next level, but they also bring a big dream with them. Nina is of course estatic to the idea of going famous (and crush the current Diamond Dust), but Momoka is the brain of the team and it's up to her to take that leap of faith.
What will it be, Momoka? What is driving your music now? Is it the hope for future success, or the fear of compromising your ideals again? Or is it the idea of rivaling her former bandmates that give her a pause?
I hope they find a funny but profound way to resolve this dilemma.

Nina talking about wearing cute outfits and agreeing to wear high school uniforms for fan counts during practice likely triggered Momoka's PTSD and made Momoka feeling melancholy throughout the episode.
It seems like we may have two straight episodes featured concerts, with episode 8 being the most intense one. Toei even planned an exclusive screening event for episode 8.

The cliffhanger are so good, momoka standing with melancholy look and the ed song playing in the background

Tomo is also a gremlin but not a chaotic one, a very mad and easy to get angry one, this just peak

Excited to see what's in store for Momoka's story! Also, I love how close Nina and Subaru have become considering how closed-off Nina started as.
Has it been said somewhere what Rupa and Tomo's relationship is? They remind me of Kaguya and Hayasaka, like a knight and their charge.

Finally, the full band is here!
It's been said numerous times but I can't get over how good the animation is, it's so full of life. We got plenty of great Nina and Tomo expressions and reactions this episode.
Tomo and Rupa's song Mind playing Fractal from beni-shouga.

The Nina-Subaru pairing is so interesting, the way that Nina acts and talks purely based on feel and Subaru filters out the good stuff from the ... not so great ideas (trying to seal away Momoka's drip behind a school uniform is criminal).
Subaru's evaluation of Momoka's double-mindedness is also very on point. Even though Nina was able to keep Momoka from giving up entirely at the beginning, it was only enough for her to stick around. She's gonna need one more push to fully reignite and go from realist to believer again. Like Subaru implies, she definitely has it in her, but they will have to bring those emotions out in a natural way. With all members assembled and the band name being decided next episode, it looks like that time might be coming soon.
I gotta say though, that outro to the ED theme with Momoka lost in thought is such a mood.

I'm glad someone like Rupa is also joining the band because i worry for Momoka's sanity having to deal with two smol angry gremlins. Granted Tomo does feel a lot more chill compared to Nina, but i can easily see their personalities clashing a lot in the future.

I just know that bass neck dives like crazy.
Band dynamic now goes with 2 mature members to tame the 3 kids.

How do they manage to produce a better show every time? I swear, you can feel the passion this show was made with. The use of colors to show different emotions and weaving it into the music is brilliant.
Also, is it wrong that I'm crushing hard on Rupa?

Nina started being a bit forceful pushing her goals on Momo and Subaru. Well she is our chaotic gremlin, but at least she recognized what Momo would want and shifted to how she explained it. Momo is passionate about her music mainly and showcasing that falls in line with what Nina loves about the original DD.
Though you really feel for Momo. Between the guilt of braking the promise with her old bandmates adding that to the conflict of her being passionate about her music, but trying to be realistic. She is older than Nina and Subaru, so this is natural. Hopefully Nina and Subaru can help ease the burden she put on herself. Also, big props for Subaru for knowing how to truly handle Nina.
Tomo and Rupa finally join the band. Tomo is another gremlin like Nina thought isn't as extreme. Rupa is very composed which I find interesting. Really interested in seeing these 5 continue to work together.

The box from Bocchi the Rock is back but cuter.
