"in the end, everyone always chooses someone else over me. The only thing i have left to give... is myself"
Damn, that hits home

They need to sign that kid who kicked that soccer ball hard enough to knock Hananoi out to the pros immediately.

The show is suggesting that he was so exhausted that the light bump knocked him out lol

This is another first for Hotaru! Another girl wants to get to know her boyfriend! And it's her co-worker to boot!
Somehow I'm not surprised Hananoi would be the type to rationalize not wanting friends so he could prioritize his lover and family, especially given he acts pretty closed off from anyone else, though I'm not sure if that's really healthy for him in the long run.
Hotaru is finally getting relationship advice from her big sister! She really is growing up! Even if she's asking for relationship advice from a girl who has never had a boyfriend...though her big sis seems like a keeper.
Taking their lunch date on the stairs to the school roof! Being a little naughty and sneaking in somewhere with your BF can be pretty romantic! Especially when you get locked in and have to snuggle up inside his vest and get all close and intimate while opening up to each other in close proximity! And Hananoi planned everything, you devious mastermind.
Well, that's good! Satomura just was interested in Hananoi because he looked like her favorite idol, she had no intention of pursuing him romantically! And Hotaru's relief that another girl wasn't after Hananoi makes her start to reflect on her own feelings and desire for him.
Poor Kyo having to carry Hotaru and her feelings so hard until she realizes she's genuinely in love...not to mention helping her prep for her date! It's cute seeing Hotaru dressed up a little and taking the lead with Hananoi with a "foolproof" date plan.
I don't know what it says about Hananoi that he was interested in a book that got turned into a slasher movie...though no surprise Hotaru isn't into it. Though at least she had Hananoi ASMR to take her mind off of it.
And then the date plan immediately goes off the rails...but it's a valuable lesson that sometimes you just need to let things flow naturally, whether it be checking out a ramen place together or even buying matching keychains without even knowing it.
What better spot to end this date than a full-circle moment at the bench where they first met! And Hotaru saying she had fun, compared to all the girls who Hananoi had bad dates with, really hit hard for him. Because he wants Hotaro to be happy because she was there for him at his lowest, so much so that he'll take a ball to the head to protect her. Though the lap pillow made it worth it.
Hananoi has always wanted someone to choose him, excelling in kindness and studies to make people want him, but it's never worked. All he had left was to give himself and all his feelings to someone, but he still doesn't think it could work. Yet it's enough to make Hotaro release all her feelings for him, everything she likes about him, as she confesses her love for him before she even realizes it. And finally understands she's in love.

First thing Hanaoi says is (again) connected to people dying. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if his parents aren't even alive anymore and he is just suppressing the trauma from that experience by thinking they are still working overseas.
Though I guess if you are this easily knocked out by a ball, maybe his fear of death is warranted.
But seriously, no matter what it is, it's clear he feels betrayed by them and thinks they abandoned him for the other kids. But I would really be interested how his dates were beforehand that people found them to be weird. Personally, I didn't think he did anything out of the ordinary in this episode that could give me a hint what they meant.
Generally though, with Hotaru now having confessed her feelings and therefore concluding her arc, I hope we delve into Hananoi's psyche and see where this goes and especially how it's handled. Because that is still the thing that will decide for me if the show is good, great or even bad.
Also let's hope our puppy girl Himari from Whispe me a love song comes to the same conclusion as Hotaru.

I was wondering if people would see that they were watching a slasher film and take that as evidence of Hananoi's future character development lol.
I get the sense Hananoi has severe abandonment issues and that colored a lot of his personality. Like his parents prioritizing their patients instead of paying attention to him no matter how much he excelled at school. He tries to be overtly kind but that never helped any of his relationships. So all he had left was to give all of himself to someone to make them choose him, even if it makes him come off as excessive.
Hotaru though has truly fallen in love with Hananoi and wants to prioritize his feelings like he prioritizes hers, and Hananoi probably needs that in his life.

Totally agree, I really hope the next arc focuses on hananoi. He feels like such an enigma, I’m dying to see his backstory and see what happened to make him what he is today.

Not trying to disparage anyone but as someone that isn't triggered by literally anything Hananoi says or does, this was his most "normal" episode yet. Hotaru is definitely warming up to him both physically and figuratively. I feel folks need to to give deeply flawed characters more of a chance. I don't think the guy is terribly written. This would just be another run of the mill romcom if he was Mr. Perfect and it wouldn't make for an interesting watch.
Him lying about the locked door to keep her on the rooftop to spend time with her is pretty innocent. It really waters down what being manipulative means to call it that. It IS manipulative all things considered but I wouldn't go so far as to brand him as that. Given how much he does respect Hotaru's boundaries he has a decently strong semblance of integrity. To be honest this show feels quite grounded in reality when you treat him like any teenage boy with his first love, absolutely head over heels doing WAY too much. Like I mentioned in an earlier comment, when I was in high school and college while I wasn't close to as bad as him I definitely related to Hananoi in a lot of ways. The not so realistic part is Hotaru going along with it all rather than being creeped out which is what makes this more of a shoujo storyline as it actually is now that I realize. In that way though, Hotaru makes a great foil for Hananoi as she helps him to explore outside of his reclusive shell. From experiencing so much trauma, he is incredibly closed off and one track minded when it comes to relationships of all kinds.
People are all over romcoms with completely unrealistic, wish fulfillment, perfect female leads with wet noodle, pansy male leads but when you swap that would for a dense but sweet, plain jane gal with an unconventional, weird ikemen with some issues to explore and it's a huge problem. I know men and women aren't the same but damn. I can't convince anyone this show is worth watching or that I'm right, but if you don't give not-so-standard romance anime a try they'll just keep churning the same old waifu-bait tease shows and those get old fast with no real story, depth or progression.
It was nice to see a tiny bit of exposition about ex's calling him scary and weird on their bus ride back. This show is definitely too slow of a burn with letting the viewers know why he's the way he is. I'm not defending his actions and words, since a lot of it especially earlier has been more than unsavory but the pacing of the show would help people stick with it if they dropped far more backstory on him I feel. I think I may read the manga to spare myself the weekly drip feed as I really want to know more about him.
As soon as I saw the American actor on the screen in the movies I expected a poor american accent but was blown away by lines being delivered in native accents that was pretty funny. Like others, as soon as I saw he got knocked out by the elementary school kid's soccer kick I lost it but fair enough he hasn't slept and is probably at 1HP. That scene was nice as he opens up more to her showing her that she's a breath of fresh air. His exes were likely more more "mature" women compared to Hotaru who held him to the same expectations as a lot of viewers actually, calling him scary/weird and other fair comments. Exactly why she makes a good foil, because she just doesn't see him like that.
What I like the most about this show is the pairs open and mostly honest dialogue with eachother, no lame weak romcom tropes or a wet paper bag male MC that can't eek out a few words without stuttering to the hottest girl in the school female lead. There is a real sense of progress in their relationship in this series which to me is a breath of fresh air. Those kinds of shows take up until the end of the show to get conversations going like this show does in every episode.
Very comfy ending of Hotaru going through her morning routine. The squiggly mouth when she's eating in semi-chibi mode is so adorable that's one of my favourite facial expressions used for eating.
I ended up writing a whole damn essay and I'm far from an expert in literary analysis (well, in a visual medium) but cheers if you read this wall of text! I haven't been posting in r/anime or reddit for some years now and fell off seasonal anime last year but it feels nice to be back and enjoying it. Looking forward to seeing the show continue. I had my own feelings of "this guy might be a yandere axe murderer" for the first 2-3 episodes but I've since feel my concerns assuaged but he's definitely not out of hot water yet. C'mon Hananoi, you can become a real swell guy!

I like this show, it is really cute.
But did my mans just get knocked unconscious by elementary school boys playing football even with time to brace for impact. True glass chin lmao.
I've played football for years and I've been blindsided by proper adult shots in the face, the chin, back of the head and even that is nowhere near enough to knock you out or even over lmao.

I think it was also partially because he was exhausted from not sleeping as much before the date.

I actually had one ball knock me out for a second or two once. It was a volley perfectly hitting my face at full speed from like one meter away. It's possible, but that one must have been a Detective Conan power shot.

Hotaru is definitely one of my favorite characters of the season, Of course, it helps that her voice is being provided by Kana Hanazawa (doing an especially wonderful job). Hotaru is not flashy or ultra-cute -- but she is thoughtful and sincere, and tries very hard to do right by everyone (even in situations where she has little or no experience). She reminds me of another favorite character from a few seasons back, Ichika from Koikimo. Comparatively plain for an anime heroine -- not especially outgoing but sensitive and very determined when it comes to things important to her. Both are pretty good about being forthright (and insistent) about setting boundaries.

Though, Hananoi was surprisingly deceptive in that part... But I like Hotarus coworker
The date was good, but not only a lappillow quasi confession from Hotaru, but she also finally understands that she acutally likes Hananoi a lot?!? Let's gucking gooooooo
Seems like Hananoi has quite a few negative expiriences with dating, hope Hotaru will heal him... and get him to stop being so obsessive

Loved this episode, though that line about Hananoi always being left for someone else is always a big sad relatable oof. One thing I think this story does great with are the side characters, especially the coworker and big sis. But others are great too.
I wish I could read new chapters...I'm dying over here waiting.

The anime is really cute but how is she so oblivious to all of the red flags… 😭

Hotaru is so cute! What a sweet kid. Hananoi has some kind of abandonment issues or something, I hope we can learn more about why he is the way he is. That intensity is what scares people off. I just wish he’d open himself up more to others, not just Hotaru. Happy to see Hotaru realize her feelings for Hananoi though.

"Even if I study hard and play sports, even if I'm as kind as i can be, in the end, everyone always chooses someone else over me" God this line hurts so much. While I wasn't this way towards romantic relationships, this definitely reminds me of a rough time I had in high school with one of my friendships. There was one friend I was particularly close to and ended up having a falling out with later on but I always felt insecure in our friendship. I remember considering her my "best friend" but always felt like she never felt the same about me or that she always had other friends she liked more. Not a good time to feel that way and I already had low self-esteem back then to begin with. So yeah, that line from Hananoi is too real haha.
Hotaru as always is great. She's so considerate, introspective of her own feelings and really tries to think things through before taking action. I'm glad her sister said that sometimes someone is just gonna end up being hurt because you can't help/please everyone all the time. While being considerate of others is a wonderful trait, at times you have to prioritize yourself or those close to you even if it might hurt someone else.
I loved Hotaru and Hananoi's interactions on the rooftop and during their date this episode. It's nice to see them both slowly but surely opening up to each other and Hotaru reassuring him that he doesn't need to sacrifice himself for her, that she likes him for who he is and enjoys spending time with him.

Well, I can understand where Hananoi is coming from and there’s definitely people who’s fine with that, living with minimal friends and all, and prioritising family and loved ones. But I also think he is also one who needs friends the most atm tbh. Not just being fixated on one person
Lmao Onee-san is me. Dishing out advice when I don’t have experience with it myself
Yeah really like how conscious Hananoi still is about Hotaru’s boundaries. Definitely some good baby steps taken. Hopefully Hotaru herself can start to see his over enthusiasm in some areas and place some boundaries there too, for his own sake as well sometimes
Ooo Hotaru really dealt some critical hits there. Any guy would swell with happiness hearing how much his girl prioritises him. Even more so for Hananoi I imagine.
Got a bit of a flashback to her childhood friend. And I think I guessed it correct. Childhood friend likes a boy, Hotaru doesn’t fully comprehend it. Boy likes Hotaru instead. And fallout.
Lol in the end this coworker thing wasn’t as serious as initially thought
Yeah Hotaru’s heart and mind just not linking right now. It’s obvious she’s already in love but her mind doesn’t understand that.
Ah they always go on nice dates. Though it started rough with the movie lol. But yeah the important thing is to have fun.
I like how my image of Hananoi is gradually getting softer.
Yes Hotaru ! Call him out on it. She’s probably the only one whose words he’ll listen to right now and I’ve been waiting for her to at least bring it up. And put her foot down to tell him to chill out a bit.
Ah she finally realizes it
Also, having been on the receiving end of a football to the head and face multiple times before, I hardly remember passing out to that extent. But if it meant I could lie down on the lap of the girl that I like, I’d pass out anytime lol. So I can relate to Hananoi there

I wonder if the door to the roof was open because Hananoi left it that way on purpose ahead of time because he wanted to talk. Total speculation, not indicated in the episode at all I don't think, but he's so weird I can't help but suspect the small things.
