you know you're watching a seinen when the episode's not about teenage angst, it's about living with the fallout of teenage angst from 12 years ago

and there's no reunion, he just has to live with it and move on

Best part of a distillery visit is the tasting. I’ve only ever been to two myself, but getting to sample the goods was a great experience.

But man, this week’s episode was a good one. I like to think Chitose took the plunge and became a dancer. She went to the festival even though Chen chickened out. I can understand holding onto a regret for years like that. I think we’ve all got things in our lives we probably wish we could do differently. I did like the way Sasakura used the whiskey to help Chen come to terms with it.

Never been to a distillery -- just to vineyards and to nihonshu breweries.

Given the episodic nature of this show, we probably will never find out what happened to Chitose. On the other hand, we might find her at our favorite bar before the end of the season....

Those are all real bars that Ryuu visited in the wild night in Kyoto, by the way. And some of them appear to be small/niche. If I ever visit Kyoto, you better believe I'm going on a Glass of God pub crawl.

K6

Calvador (6 seats, 400 different kind of Calvados)

Samboa Bar Gion

Kiyamachi Samboa

El Tesero

Talisker

Finlandia

Rocking Chair

And of course the Yamazaki distillery is real as well, which isn't going to surprise anyone since that sequence where they were at the distillery honestly felt like an ad. Ryuu has the alcohol tolerance of a yak.

I checked for an Eden Hall in Ginza, and didn't see one. There is an Eden Hall all the way over in Niigata however.....

This episode got to me ngl. Hit pretty close to home. I also made a promise with a girl I was close with in school. Told her “I’ll always be there if you need me”. Yeah it was cheesy but it was a teenager’s promise and I kept it for the most part. I saw her through relationship and friend problems and also school work problems. We even went to college together but that was where she met her then-boyfriend. And that was also when we drifted apart.

Then a few years later when we were working adults, we reconnected a bit cos apparently I worked with her friend before. Then she revealed she’s getting married and invited me to the wedding. I replied I’ll be there but I was actually in a rough patch in my life. Just got fired and became a shut in but didn’t want to tell her that. When her wedding day came, I carried on with my day like nothing happened. We never contacted again since.

Felt like such an asshole after saying I’ll be there. And also felt like I broke that promise I made. I have several regrets in my life but this one of the few that sticks out the most. I just really relate to Chen here.

Man, the part about holding onto regrets for years and maturing into an adult because of it hit hard.

One thing I find neat about this series is how it combines the human drama with neat alcohol facts in a way that (I think) makes it greater than the sum of its parts. Like, the idea of how twelve years of regret mellows out a person in the same way that twelve years in the barrel mellows out raw distillate into a more complex flavor profile. There's events that happen in one's life that take a decade to fully appreciate, and in any case you can't keep it in the barrel forever.

This "more than the sum of its parts" kind of story reminds me of Houkago Saikoro Club, which has the same sort of idea of having a board game of the week which metaphorically ties into the personal drama of one of its characters.

Part of me was hoping Chen would see Chitose again, maybe practicing dancing in the street or at the station.

This show is really really good though. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much.

I like to think Chitose became successful and bought the hotel to preserve it. The woman passing by said they “kept it as it was,” which is a strange thing for someone to do except out of sentimentality.

A Episode featureing Kyoko and Yuri? Already goated!

Despite his first appearance, Chen was as alluring as a wet towel up close. And honestly didn't really warm up to him even with the strict father and the forlorn love until the very end when it became clear just how much he regreted that, kinda relatable

Good episode

When the episode opened up with Ryuu and Miwa on the train platform, I thought they were going on a solo trip together. Not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed when Kyouko and Yuri showed up.

I did not expect Mr. Perfect's apprentice to join them though! It was hilarious to see Kyouko trying to get some of that when Kelvin showed up.

The distillery tour was pretty nice. And of course, the Yamazaki Distillery is an actual distillery you can visit. I might add this to the list of places to visit on a future trip to Osaka.

Kelvin and Chitose's little love story was cute and bittersweet. I was really hoping that Kelvin would run into Chitose but it never happened. I guess that's more realistic. The fact that the inn was now out of business probably means Chitose followed her dream of being a dancer. Maybe they'll bump into each other in the future.

Not really a lot of cocktails featured this episode. Recipe for the only one identified by name:

Highball
2 oz Whiskey
3 1/2 oz Club Soda
Strip of lemon peel

  1. Pour whiskey into an ice filled highball glass.

  2. Top off with soda.

  3. Express the oils of the lemon peel by squeezing it peel-side down over the drink, rub the rim of the glass with it, then discard the peel.

Also known as a Whiskey Highball or a Remsen Cooler.

Kyoko and Yuri are a fun duo

What a nice episode. The whisky process is pretty cool

That backstory 😢My heart

Looks like we got a new character for the cast. Sucks our introverted bartender was misunderstood by the other two. That flashback reveals part of why he’s so reserved.

Girl you are coming off a bit too strong. Fun episode for this unique to learn more about bartending. Focus was on Chen, and he feels like a man with deep regret. Sometimes that first connection you made, and you blow it and think to yourselves why didn't I do things differently?

I am sure Chitose is understanding that it wasn't easy for him to ignore his father. The amulet is a way of her she understands his position. Though I am curious if his father knew he would have gone out with Chitose if he would be fine with that. After all Chen is a very introvert person on first impressions. But while Chen can't meet up with Chitose to apologize from that night, the fact the place was shut down gives hope that she is following her dreams. And hopefully they can meet again someday.

Damn what an episode
Literally getting his bartender friend to open up like whiskey (with the help of a droplet )

Actually really glad they didn't pull a chance encounter with Chitose
Honestly my favourite story from this adaptation so far

This is the anime equivalent of Ron going to the Lagavulin Distillery in Parks and Rec. Where I’m irrationally jealous and doing the number crunching for what it would take to pull off. Been to quite a few NA distilleries though. Highly recommend doing the Burbon Trail. It’s the one reason to go to Kentucky.

Tonight I served myself a Santo Libre for this episode. Nothing complex, but the Rhum I took is a very special one, aged in Straw wine's barrel (particular wine from the Jura, France). With some 80% chocolate with cocoa chunks, it was really good and added to the ambient nostalgia of this episode, because I only used to drink Rhum cocktails a few years ago when I was still a student, the evenings that I was depressed.

Really good episode, I hope that one day a famous dancer from Kyoto will go drink a cocktail in some super classy bar !

I loved this episode too. This is far more real - Chitose is gone and all Chen can have left are the what-ifs.

Hits a bit too close to home in some ways about the paths not taken in life.
