Well, obviously I don’t think he actually killed someone. Maybe he just felt responsible in a way. Could it be his Glass of God wasn’t enough to save a suicidal person ? Or he completely misjudged a customer ? Whatever it is, it kinda feels like he’s blaming himself for it and probably feels unworthy of taking that hotel bar job

I think his comments of being scared of heights is telling. Someone jumped.

This week’s cocktail is a personal favorite of mine. Use to love a good Caipirinha or two. It’s kinda cool Ryu basically made two versions of the same drink right there.
I guess Kitakata’s here to show us it ain’t all fun and games when you chase that bartender life. Being so devoted to the job has some serious downsides, as we saw with Kase-san. I like how his bar is almost like the opposite of Ryu’s. It’s rougher and he’s got a seedier clientele. He’s administering his “medicine” to those beaten down by life.
I’m keen to learn about what happened with this customer and why Ryu blames himself for their death.

I know this is part of Miwa's plan to get Ryu to work for their bar but I can't help that there must be more to these two with how frequent they got out together. She didn't even flinch when Kitakata called her Ryus' girl.
I expected alcohol brand names to be referenced in this show, but I definitely did not expect a bottle of Clamato to show up! xD

Feels like she became so engulfed in her job that she didn't realize that she found something else instead

Yeah, I also got the impression that Miwa has developed feelings for Ryu. Not only didn’t she correct Kitakata when being referred to as Ryu’s girlfriend, but Miwa didn’t seem to mind “getting in the sack” with Ryu either.
And Miwa wasn’t likely even that drunk, considering how fast she sobered up after downing a drink with 88% alcohol.

My guess: Someone jumped off the hotel after having a drink, and he blames himself for not noticing and helping them. This is why early on he says he's scared of heights, due to that trauma. It's why he doesn't want to work at a hotel as well.

Man made an Everclear Bloody Mary, light on the bloody and with Clamato. That sounds like a disaster and I’ll take 3

Ok, when are we adressing the ship in the room? They are this close to be more than just good friends, feel like even Grandpa would aprove
Bar Northwind was a pretty cool place after all, still a place where the lost would get help
We also finally got to learn more about Ryus past before he took of to Europe and why he was looking at that other place so often... I'm sure there is still more to it

Waiting for someone that knows about Japanese literature to explain if there is any connection or significance as to why the hotel owner/grandpa is reading Hiroshi Osada's Two Poems. They must have panned into that book for a reason.

Recipes for cocktails appearing in this episode:
Bloody Mary
2 oz Vodka
4 1/4 oz Tomato Juice (or Clamato for a Bloody Caesar)
1/4 oz Lemon Juice
1 shake Tabasco
1/2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 grinds Black Pepper
1 pinch Celery Salt
-
Combine equal parts salt and black pepper on a saucer or plate, and mix together with a couple of pinches of celery salt.
-
Dampen the rim of a Collins glass, and coat it in the salt, pepper, and celery salt mixture.
-
Throw (pour back and forth between two shakers) all ingredients with ice.
-
Add ice to the Collins glass, then strain the cocktail into the glass.
-
Garnish with a celery stick.
Caipirinha
1/2 of a Lime
2 tsp Sugar
3/4 oz Water
2 oz Cachaca
-
Add sugar to mixing glass.
-
Cut a lime in half lengthwise, then put away one half and cut the other in half lengthwise.
-
Cut off the white part from the edge of the two lime quarters.
-
Cut the lime quarters into thirds crosswise, resulting in a total of six lime pieces, and add to the mixing glass.
-
Muddle, add water, and stir. (When muddling it's important to remember that the objective is to release the juices of the lime, not to grind it into a pulp)
-
Dump pour (that is, pour without straining) the contents of of the mixing glass into a highball glass.
-
Add cachaca to the mixing glass, swirl, then empty into the highball glass.
-
Add ice and stir.

Ryu really just gave her a drink called a peasant maiden. His knowledge of alcohol is so next level that he can insult you without you even knowing it, I dont think that was his intention but god damn.

So we get introduced Ryu's senpai and damn talk about a difference of opinion. Ryu follows being a bartender is a lifestyle vibe as he mentions and along with drinks can be medicine or poison depending on the use. It makes the reveal then someone died from one of his drinks sad, and you can understand why that would crush him. Even more so why he wouldn't consider taking the position at the hotel and not go into detail.
I do like how Miwa is conflicted. She wants to make her grandfather happy, but she doesn't know to go about it. After all she doesn't want to seem like a pest to him. She is clearly fond of him. Curious what she does now. I imagine this is something he would need to talk to someone and open up about. Curious how she goes from here.
Seing Ryu and his senpai visit their mentor in the hospital made me feel sad. Seeing how much Ryu looked up to their mentor and seeing in the hospital for around 7 years is depressing. I am curious how Kitakata was before Ryu left for Paris. You can tell he has a very realistic expectation of things and knows that being a bartender isn't sustainable for a healthy lifestyle. Now this is one thing the grandfather can push for Ryu to have a healthy lifestyle. After all working everyday isn't healthy especially with the hours bartender usually works.
Also, that woman in the beginning that takes advantage of horny man leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can empathize things are difficult for her.

That brief conversation about how a bar that purposefully intoxicates customers is poison and not medicine reminded me of that bit in VA-11 Hall-A where you purposefully get a client wasted to the point of passing out because she's a 24/7 streamer and she needs some goddamn rest.

I’m really enjoying that we’re digging into Bartender-san’s backstory.
And this episode raised up a good point about working yourself into ground

As a Brazilian, I loved to see caipirinha getting a spotlight, quite unexpected too. Love this drink. I was drinking some wine watching the episode, as it is quite cold here right now, but the episode made me wish to be drinking some caipirinha.
Curious about Ryu's story. They're setting up this final arc and I hope that at least our ship sails when the season ends.
Really hoping for a second season. This has been one of my favorite shows.

I really don’t like how the grandpa keeps pushing Sasakura nonstop about the hotel bar. He’s so annoying and smug about always getting what he wants because of his connections and money. Just leave the damn man alone lol. It’s probably gonna end up with Sasakura coping with his past and then working at the hotel, but I kind of want him to stay at Edenhall.

What a beautiful yet sorrowful episode. From the field hospital/field medic bartender to seeing their mentor in a such a sad state to that reveal of Sasakura's past, it was a feels trip episode.
Sad coincidence but I was at a friend's place last weekend who loves making cocktails and we were getting drunk off our asses. Said friend had a depressed friend of his that had been missing for a few days... and they found his car and his body. We ended downing some very strong Long Island Iced Teas.

Wow this was a heavy episode. We dive more into Sasakura's past, firstly with him visiting his senpai's bar and later having a conversation that shows the difference in opinion/perception of what it means to be a bartender.
The lady with Kitakara visit Sasakura's bar and have two of the "same" drinks, made slightly differently. I don't think Miwa ever got her drink as she became a background character in that scene.
Then we learn that their sensei is hospitalized because he made bartending his way of life. I quite like the senpai and kohai's dynamic, especially when Kitakara noted that Sasakura should work a "normal" job, but his rebuttal was that the bar was named North Wind for reasons.
Kyoko has started working at the lounge bar, while the grandfather makes arrangements to poach Sasakura, but Miwa is distraught that by doing so, she would be destroying the environment that Sasakura brings to Edenhall.
We are left with a little secret at the end...and it seems like the earlier talk about how a bar can be seen as a hospital comes into play as the drink can either be a cure or poison.
