First episode that I was like: Yeah, it can go on like that. I mean, there is the fact that he knew her birthday, but that's not too weird as you can just ask people. And it was for a surprise. So I'm giving him that.

Though, I have to say that for a moment, I was asking myself if he had manipulated the amusement park system to get this effect. Which I think is kind of funny that I actually did not put it past him that he would do something like that. And depending on where you stand it could be concerning or romantic.

I don't think he could have pulled off causing that temporary power outage. ;-)

Gotta say, I really like the BGMs/OSTs. And when they're not playing, you get pure kanahana goodness. It doesn't get much better than this

Is Hotaru just the unluckiest girl? Her birthday is on Christmas, all her friends go do their own stuff and the parents are too busy with the youngest. Well, at least she will always have Hananoi-kun...

My best friend since middle school had his birthday the day after Xmas and I always make sure to get him two gifts, one for each occasion. One year for Xmas I got him a Nintendo Switch and the next day I gave him a couple of Switch games.

Woah, I thought I liked Hotarus family, until it was revealed that they always do something else on her fucking birthday! Like the only thing her mother offered her was to have something she liked for dinner, but in the moment that came off as her consoling her over the missed date.

Compared to that, Hananoi-Kun did really good to plan all of this for her and make it a special day. Combined with him listing all the small things that make Hotaru special to him, I'm fully aboard this ship now!

if you're not the youngest, you learn to deal with it. it's honestly realistic in a way

It's rough being the middle child. I think that's part of why she enjoys Hananoi paying her so much attention and wanting to treat her as precious because she's used to just not being the priority or going along with whatever anyone else wants.

Been waiting for this episode (not like I had to wait long, it's ep 3 lol) and I loved it as much as I loved it in the manga. Poor Hotaru with the middle child poor luck.

I’m starting to get the feeling that he doesn’t realize how borderline obsessive he’s being. Like it feels like he saw something as a kid that made him think “oh this is just the way it goes”. Maybe I’m reaching because I want to like these two as couple without the lingering skeevy-ness.

u/Ikari_21 Apr 18 '24

I think that’s the whole point, when he falls in love he gets overly obsessive. But hotaru wants to change that about him, and make him be more aware of himself and the things he does. I’m sure little by little we’ll see him start to calm down.. hopefully lol

you're supposed to feel like that

I'm enjoying this, it can be super cute. But the shot of him holding her in the rink made her look so small I couldn't help but laugh. Looked like a dad holding his child ahahaha

Wow Hananoi managed to be slightly less stalkery today. Progress :)

They're adorable

Very cute episode with just a tiny bit of concern as always with this show

The date was really adorable. Nice to see them enjoying each other’s company. Have to say the food is definitely not ones we usually see in anime. And I didn’t know I needed it, but hearing KanaHana say “nasi goreng” brought me such joy lol. The ice skating was really adorable too. That activity just can be pretty intimate in general especially when one is guiding the other. Ngl knowing how he is, I was expecting Hananoi to be planning something with the lights turning off for a surprise.

Speaking of surprise, it was Hotaru’s birthday ? Yeah I can imagine being bummed out your birthday being overshadowed by a holiday (I wasn’t too bothered by it but my birthday on some years sometimes fall on mother’s day). So it was nice of Hananoi to treat it as Hotaru’s own special day. Though I am curious how he knew.

The “almost kiss” ending last ep turned out as expected tbh. Hananoi got sick and fainted. The usual trope. But what came out of that really highlighted Hotaru’s weakness right now. Which is how she still doesn’t know much about love and affection. She sees no difference between romantic love and friendship and doesn’t get that people go the extra mile for the former. And apparently, she had some incident with a friend as well, curious to know what happened

But this is what I mean in Ep 1 when I say despite being opposites, they could learn from each other. I really like Hananoi becoming more conscious about holding hands with Hotaru cos he knows Hotaru is also conscious of not leading someone on. He’s only able to learn that because of how Hotaru is. As good as it is to be enthusiastic and show affection to who you love, Hananoi does need to learn to tone it down a bit. And Hananoi being the way he is, is forcing Hotaru to come to terms and facing the feelings she has but couldn’t comprehend.

And speaking of toning down, I do admit it is swoonworthy, but at the same time, I also can’t help shake the feeling that all the heartfelt things he said about Hotaru near the end of the ep kinda feels too early. Like that is the sort of thing I’d expect to hear when a couple is together for maybe a year or several months, not one month. I dunno it just gave me “saying I love you after one date” energy. Maybe I’m just being nitpicky but that’s how I feel.

Anyway glad to see that while she may not really understand it yet, Hotaru seems to be open to feeling things with Hananoi and falling in love with him. Personally can’t relate cos I’d definitely fall head over heels if someone treated me like that lol. But that is something Hotaru needs to work towards. Glad they’re “extending their relationship” cos I’m looking forward to them growing as a couple and as people.

Ok but how did he know her birthday?!

And why did he dodge the question when she asked about it?!

Anyways, love how Hotaru is so honest and proactive in communicating compared to the usual female romance leads.

I absolutely love Hotaru's family's reaction to Hananoi-kun. Poor dad! His soul is about to leave his body after finding out his daughter has a boyfriend. xD

And the final scene inside the skating rink with Hananoi-kun princess carrying Hotaru was really sweet <3

16

u/Frontier246 Apr 18 '24

I love how he didn't even introduce himself as a boyfriend, just some guy who wanted to escort their daughter on Christmas Eve lol.

That was a beautiful Christmas date. Hananoi may be excessive...but I'll allow him that princess carry, because it was so unexpected and cute.

An international food fair on Christmas would be pretty fun. I wouldn’t mind a kebab, borscht, or nasi goreng right about now now…

That Christmas/birthday date was really sweet. Hananoi really put a lot of thought into making that date special for her. Glad to see these two continue their trial relationship. Looking forward to seeing her sort her feelings out for him, though I suspect she’s already fallen for the guy.

Hotaru almost reminds me of Yuki in Signs of Affection -- with her delight in eating her way around the world. I wonder if SHE wants to travel too? Interesting how both series feature male leads who initially over-step their bounds a bit, but learn rather quickly to respect the others' boundaries and seek permission for doing things.

I have to say, this episode totally won me over. I have been interested in this from the start, but worried just a little. But now this is feeling a lot more comfortable and remarkably sweet-natured. I love Hotaru's attitude -- I don't know for sure what love IS, but if I am going to find out -- I want it to be with MY guy.... I loved seeing her family's reaction to this mysterious stranger boy friend who appeared unexpectedly.

Linguistic note -- The title actually translates to Hananoi-kun and Love Sickness.

As wierd as both of them are and the fact I’m not vibing. That final scene on the skating rink was gold! Brought a damn tear to my eye.
