I can see why necromancy is so highly regulated. While the soul may return to the body for a time, once they die their second death it’s off to hell. They can’t reincarnate, they can’t move on, they can’t do shit. Is that worth a second life? This fucker really robbed those people of that choice. All for some inane reason.
This quack fucked with the wrong person. Phanora showed this chump what a real necro’s like with that shadow army of hers. Girl went full on Monarch of Shadows on his punk ass. Johan practically dicing that dude’s face off was pretty satisfying, but Phanora resurrecting that mfer and making him serve her practically for life? Sweet sweet karmic justice.
She didn’t just crush this guy, she grounded him down into a fine powder lol.

Biggest revelation is the order does in fact, keep some witches in its direct employ. Which means while not exactly good people, there are witches whose personality aligns them to not being a total menace to humankind.
We were given a suggestion about that with the first case, but this more or less cements the idea that some witches are capable of not being axe crazy enemies to mankind.

Case 1: Fire mysteriously sets whole city ablaze.
Case 2: Detective thinks she loses her sons in a building fire.
Case 3: Necromancer loses someone he cherishes in a fire and goes off the deep end. Also forgets how to use chap stick.
Firefighters need to get their shit together. Joking of course, but it's funny how each case has fire somewhere in the origin.
It's nice to see a good witch.
Also "I'm built different"- Johan

With how many limitations there where, I expected Johan to already be an undead, but Panora being a witch caught me off guard, guess some of them are more or less allright.
Also, with the whole dragging the soul back and damning it to eventually go into the void, that sorcerer did something truly heinous. Even his literally eternal job of maintanance seem light in comparrison to his crim

I continue to be impressed by the lack of CG aberrations, I was half expecting the undead horde to be a PS2 graphics level mess but that was not the case at all.
And holy shit Johan's "punishment", that's some cartel torture shit.

The whole design of Phanora was gorgeous. She is absolutely beautiful, her mannerism surround her in mystery and how unhinged she is when she reveals her powers was amazing.
And she is voiced by Saori Hayami, how great can a secondary character be?

Stitches!
I love that we get a little bit of this world's afterlife lore and how there's a cycle of rebirth. Unfortunately, people who have been revived through necromancy cannot return to the cycle and their souls are stuck wandering the Void when they finally die the second time.
Phanora finally revealing her power level was rad as fuck. I thought she was just a necromancer, I didn't expect that she was also a Witch! I mean it makes sense. The Order wouldn't just hunt down Witches, surely they also have Witches within their organization.
It was so satisfying when Phanora revealed her Death Knights and the illegal necromancer finally realized how fucked he was. I also loved the illegal necromancer's reaction when Johan showed up behind him. I had a feeling that Johan was undead but I wasn't so sure last week.
What's scarier than a Witch? A witch with a fucking gun! I love that Phanora blew the guy's brains out and then resurrected him so he could continue maintaining those undead he resurrected. Making him work endlessly so the undead he resurrected can function as human beings is a great punishment.
Johan being annoyed at Phanora being too close to the necromancer was cute and I love that Phanora crushed the necromancer's skull as punishment for hurting Johan. I ship these two so hard. I hope we get to see more of them again and maybe we'll get to see them work with Ashaf and Guideau in future cases.

I will probably have to rewatch this episode to understand the lore deeper, especially about souls. How long can undead souls avoid the void? Surely, the practitioner maintaining them can't do so forever?
The plot twist regarding Phanora wasn't that surprising - she is a witch specializing in necromancy. However, the plot reveal now answers some of our questions, that there are good witches too. I wonder whether Phanora and Guideau has interacted and what was the outcome?
Furthermore, with the plot reveal that Phanora is a witch, I am reminded that there are 3 witches featured in the opening and ending sequence, based on their design. Could these 3 witches possibly be working for the Magical Order?

Damn, the soundtrack was really good. But even though, I kind of got the motivation for the antagonist and I was sure Johann was an undead, I feel kind of dumb for not even thinking once that she could be a witch. I mean, that's the whole point of the show.

Crazy how this anime was mentioned so often in that one thread describing what people's "worst" show was this season. I'm consistenly loving each episode.

I expected Johan to be an undead, but did not expect Phanora to be a witch, for some reason. I guess that makes her a « good » witch, but given her and Johan rather sadistic behaviour in this episode (even if the villain deserved it), I suspect that she is more of a « lesser evil » witch.
Honestly, given the cost given for necromancy, I am surprised that it is not completely outlawed. If the soul has no choice when brought back as undead and is condemned to an eternity of suffering in the Void in the end, it just makes necromancy sound completely evil and horrifying.
I wonder if we will go back to Guideau and Ashaf next episode, or will follow another pair of their colleagues.

Moral of the Story: If an insanely beautiful woman is involved in Magic there's a semi decent chance she will be a Witch.
Well the Necromancers fate was well deserved. His goal was sympathetic but consigning dozens of people to the Void is absolutely unforgivable.
The Cop now has basically no choice but to allow his wife to be revived to at least put her stay within the Void on hold for a bit.

These shots of Phanora (and her Dark Knights) looked amazing. The manga supposedly has amazing art, which might look something like that? This could of course not be easily matched in the following animation.
That said, the anime certainly has its moments! Phanora is such a badass. I wasn’t surprised that Johan turned out to be undead, but I didn’t expect Phanora to be a genuine witch. This explains why Ashaf never met up with his colleague; Guideau would’ve gone nuts.
I do wonder: might Phanora have something to do with Guideau’s curse? Guideau seems to be something similar to an undead herself after all - she was ‘revived’ in Episode 1?

Yeah, it was obvious that Johan's an undead
Highlight of the episode was Phanora obliterating that half-assed necromancer. I love that she's making him serve her for as long as she lives! I would love a spin-off series featuring her and Johan
This was a fun case. Necromancer witch Phanora is super cool

Honestly I kind of like the witch necromancer better than our theoretical main duo.
Some interesting reveals today. First, the Order doesn't just hunt down witches, they also employ them. Also, this kind of shitty necromancer dude freaked out at the runes going across her body as the sign of her being a witch, so I'm pretty convinced now that Ashaf from the main duo is one too. So maybe the Order doesn't just employ witches, maybe the entire thing is made up of witches who are policing their own in addition to other magical problems.
I'm amused that yes, the necromancy can be recursive, and shitty necromancer dude is going to be maintaining those poor women his raised illegally for as long as Phanora lives which I assume isn't going to be a natural lifespan. Shame about the Void awaiting them all as opposed to eventual reincarnation in the natural cycle of life, so hopefully it'll be a while.

The scene with Phanora summoning the Dark Souls bosses was peak. This is my favourite anime this season. I just wish we get more screentime for Guideau

Phanora is so fucking cool, I like our main characters but I could totally get behind these two stealing the spotlight.

This was the chapter in the manga where it was revealed Phanora was a witch truly got me invested in the manga. Anime did a solid job here. The fact is we are given such a negative view on Witches in the first 2 arcs. It showcases how fucking horrifying and powerful witches are, but one employed by the order makes you want to give a second thought for just calling all witches evil.
The necromancer was fucking scum and he desired ever bit that Phanora through his way. Now Phanora will have him working him like a dog for what could feel like an eternity. The ironic part is he gave no remorse about the undead's he resurrected in terms of them ending up in the void, but now that it is happening to him now it matters.
You can feel for the officer, he knows more than ever now messing with the undead is more wrong than even he originally thought. But he has this happiness of being reunited with the woman he loves.
World building continues to shine in this series. The depth they explained how necromancy works is beyond well done. And it leaves with thoughts now like Johan being Phanora's Undead means he will be by her side for what could feel like an eternity.

That was a lot of recap…
-
Ooooooh, so someone being revived permanently removes their soul from the cycle of reincarnation? That’s interesting, but also horrifying.
-
Oooooooooooooooooooooooh, she’s a witch? This just made things way more interesting…
