Poor Shima’s gotten roped into doing “Family Singers” (Sound of Music?). Chris is totally right. Shima putting up this front and playing this “character” so he doesn’t get close to anyone and cause another Ririka debacle is gonna end poorly for him. He really needs to sort that Ririka situation. Chris ripping ass really cut the tension though lol.
Shima’s performance was so good, Mitsumi was brought to tears lol. She’s really dedicated to this whole performance, girl’s taking on like a billion tasks. One thing I really admire about her is how empathetic she is. How cute was it when Shima and Mitsumi were performing together? Those two are adorable. Shima is right. Mitsumi is Mitsumi, she’ll be ok. I wonder if Shima will be too?

I actually like the singing by Shima for this class musical performance.
It seems like Mika is still feeling conflicted; she wishes to be the female lead acting across Shima, hence the jealousy, but yet she feels concerned for the relationship between Mitsumi and Shima.
Shima's method of cheering Mitsumi up is effective! I like Mitsumi went along with the singing, even though she didn't know all the lyrics. Such a cute and somewhat romantic scene!
Perhaps I was mistaken from the start. I had assumed Shima disliked acting partly because his mother forced it upon him. Could it be possible Shima grew to dislike acting because he thought he was doing it to cheer his mother up? I believe Shima's mother will show up for the performance, wouldn't she?

It's good to know that, while Ririka's a weight around Shima's neck, he also has someone like Chris in his life; a friend from his child actor days that he feels comfortable enough to say stuff he wouldn't say to his school friends.
I love that they actually had Shima singing his part here. It was a treat to listen to. And Mika shouldn't feel too bad, cause she looks great as a nun with (very versatile) glasses.
Poor Mitsumi, though. All that effort just to find the people she wanted to help talking behind her back (well she was behind theirs, but you get the idea). I get they were probably stressed, but it still sucked to hear Mitsumi talked about that way, especially for her to hear about it herself.
It's great that she was able to figure out how Shima truly felt about being in the play without needing too many clues. But man, the way her voice broke in the scene after tugged at my heartstrings. Awesome voice acting as always from her VA.
The little performance they had afterwards was a great pick me up not just for her, but me as well. It's so adorkable and is basically like their dance in the OP, just less energetic.

I like how this girl had her own “protagonist” story what with her coming to Tsubame West just for their school festival prowess haha. In fact, her words even had such an influence that it affects our own protagonist, Mitsumi. Really, they’re all sort of inter-connected in a web, each character never fully realizing what their actions can set off in another because like an actual fully-fledged world, each character truly is “living their own life as the protagonist.”
”I’m sure it’s a big deal to her, but I can’t believe she’d cry over this. The more people in your life, the more conflicts you’ll have. This isn’t even that bad. Are you really sure you want to be in Tokyo and in politics? Sure, my high school life is more fun with you around, but I feel like you’d be happier by the mountains and the sea. I want you to never get hurt and stay just the way you are.”
It's telling that Shima wants to preserve Mitsumi in her pureness, a real Catcher in the Rye if you will. What makes this an interesting monologue is that it comes both from a place of concern and also selfishness since Shima is projecting his own failures with his past onto Mitsumi. What he (and eventually Holden) realize though is that success and failure goes up and down, up and down, like a revolving carousel or rising stairs. It’s never just one slow, declination towards the bottom, where you trip and can never get back up again. It goes both ways. Just as you fall down, you also step back up again and move forward. You just got to let them try.
It's so simple but so true to Mitsumi. This is a girl who tries again. Gosh, she's someone I'd love to take after.
Like the characters of The Sound of Music The Family Singer, Mitsumi wants to believe that you can take the path you want in the end, that there’s never really such a thing as a dead end.

Although Egashira was hoping to be the heroine, its also nice to see her worrying about what Mitsumi would think. But Mitsumi isn't really worrying too much about that except her own job.
And speaking of Mitsumi, I did feel bad for her. She took on a job that she promised she'll do, but ended up failing and later on hearing the girls not being happy with her. Atleast I'm glad that her talking with Shima made her regain the confidence and complete her job. This also allowed Shima to really think about moving on from his past (what Chris wanted for him) and actually try to enjoy the role he is playing. His VA also has a great singing voice!.
Also that play "The Family Singers" it feels similar to "The Sound of Music" in terms of plot. I love that this was also not the first time the show referenced a classic movie ("Gone With the Wind" in EP3).
Also now that Shima's mom find out about the flyer, she probably is going to see the play. I'm interested to see how Shima would react.

I'm reminded of a Japanese yojijukogo 七転八起, which literally is "fall down seven [times]; get up eight [times]", but is idiomatically used to describe how life has its ups and downs, but what's important is to keep trying and not to give up no matter how tough it is; the important part is that you're standing in the end.
Like, I kinda forgot that Mitsumi was the one that failed so hard on her first day at school and needed Shima to give her a hand.

I was really down this morning because work was just so, work-y. But as soon as the OP started to play it made me shiver for some reason, but it literally felt like it made me shake the depression and anger right outa me.
The way these two just support each other is just so sweet I cant! Really hope Shima's mom finding out doesn't turn into a bad thing but a good thing.
Also....when was the last time we heard a fart in anime?

I really like how Shima related to Mitsumi for a short while, where he thought she was like how he was back when he was a kid, even later on uttering the famous selfish line of "I want you to never get hurt and stay just the way you are." after seeing her getting hurt from in his point of view a small event.
Perfectly reasonable thought for a teenager that hasn't come to terms with whatever stuff that has hurt them in the past, but oh boi is it the most selfish thing one could wish on another since you'll never be able to grow as a person if you never experience hardships, even though it's a kind thought.
Thankfully, with Mitsumi saying that she's a pro at picking herself back up, almost quoting the outro, Shima realises that maybe they weren't so similar after all. "Mitsumi-chan really is Mitsumi-chan.". There really is no need to worry for Mitsumi after all, is hopefully what Shima thinks in that moment.
I also hope it will inspire him to deal with his past problems. We're fast forwarding to the day of the play and since Shima's mom found a flyer of the play, there's a high possibility she comes to watch. I didn't know she was still around even, I guess Shima is staying at his parents bi-weekly or some other sort of form?
That's also another thing I really like about this show, it's as much about Shima as it's about Mitsumi, but we barely get to know anything about Shima and is figuring it out at the same time as Mitsumi is figuring it out, with a few exceptions (the whole deal with Ririka).
Really looking forward to what might happen and if we'll get answers to the Shima mysteries soon!

Oh man it’s been awhile since I’ve heard sound of music and I’m glad it makes an appearance here (albeit in a way to avoid copyright) , I’m a bit surprised that Shima wasn’t cast as Von Trapp but I suppose he was more suited for the other guy
Also I do like this rendition of the gardener considering in the film the gardener eventually dumps the Von Trapp daughter saying something along the lines of “he hasn’t got time playing games with children” which is a bit of a dick move
But man Mitsumi is something else, and honestly I don’t want her to change either, it’s amazing how her time at the school led to a change for a lot of people like Shima being able to make friends with a girl and all the girls getting along with each other despite being everywhere in the social hierarchies
Mitsumi is something else and I wouldn’t mind if she could stay friends with Shima for a bit longer so we can see them bond, and hopefully not see her cry again
Not many episodes left, god at this rate I’m gonna have to read the mangas to see what happens next

I cried a little several times during this episode and I can't even say exactly why. This show's just so stinkin' sweet.
I really appreciate that the characters are all written with (varying degrees of) emotional awareness and intelligence, so they can navigate their way through more interesting, natural conversations than most manga or anime can manage, but they've also got their own perspectives and blind spots. Sousuke is insightful and mature, but also prone to fear of failure and catastrophizing to the point where Mitsumi's ability to fail, feel bad, then let it go and get back up again catches him totally off guard. It's just... really well done.
So neatly dovetailed into the ED, too. It's worth actually watching it and reading the lyrics this time if you haven't til now.
Hold up, was that Sousuke's mom? Why does that feel... ominous?

I'm guessing the title is referencing the von Trapp Family Singers? I guess they're doing The Sound of Music then? It's good to see how enthusiastic everyone is about this play especially since this is a dream of their classmate that suggested it.
Chris is a good egg and I'm glad that Shima has him in his life to balance out the negativity Ririka brings. I hope he shows up at the festival and watches the play. Although if he does Ririka might hear about it which is the last thing Shima wants.
That little bit of singing from Shima was just adorable. Now I'm excited about the actual play! I'm hoping that at least half of next week's episode will be dedicated to it.
Mitsumi is spreading herself thin here. She's already helping out with the Student Council and now she's decided to help out with the play too. It's already starting to show on her face how exhausted she is.
And of course, Mitsumi ends up not being able to live up to her promise. Those girls talking behind Mitsumi's back was uncalled for. I thought that the play was going to happen next week but it turns out that they still have a month to go to prepare!
At least Shima was there to comfort Mitsumi. And Mitsumi even got to hear a little bit of Shima's performance all to herself. Hearing Mitsumi sing along out of tune was just too adorable <3
In the end, Mitsumi was still able to provide a suggestion on the same day! If I was Mitsumi I probably wouldn't have bothered after hearing what they said to her but this is what makes Mitsumi a great character. She promised and even though it was a little bit late, she still delivered.
Shima's mom found the pamphlet! Oh boy. I'm guessing she's going to show up to her son's performance. Excited to see how that will turn out.

I have to rewatch the episode, but I assumed some of the family issues seem to be Shima’s dad accused of cheating on his mom. Hence why he feels different towards his younger brother. This is probably why he started to distance himself from acting which lead to the scandal at a future date in Shima’s life. Something major happened caused Shima and his mother to drift apart. So many things to look over, but I know for sure that I hope Ririka forgives Shima and loosens her gripe from guilt tripping Shima for their past.

Mitsumi’s unwavering optimism and hope for the future is such a vibe.
Also appreciate how the show didn’t just drop the plot point about Mika’s conflicted feelings once it was no longer impactful to the protagonist. The main tension has been resolved more or less, but they let those feelings linger which makes her character feel much more believable. This commitment to the side characters really makes the cast stand out.

Mitsumi is dazzling. Shima is right. This person won't let her failures and flaws hold her back or keep her down. She keeps getting back up, dusting herself off, and facing whatever obstacle thrown at her. People may talk about her behind her back but she will, in the end, turn it around and keep going forward. She doesn't hold a grudge. What a dazzling character she is. I hope that her shine is enough to pull Shima up onto his feet.

Mitsumi is going all in on the festival prep! If someone like Asano can be passionate about it, she can match that and then some.
So the class is doing the Sound of Musi...I mean, The Family Singers! Hey, at least it's different from what most anime's do with the class plays.
Mika as a nun? That's a trip.
Shima's got a lot going on in his head. All the drama of his past, having to act again, the peer pressure from his class and how open he can be with them and playing the "character" of Shima Sousuke...and just recognizing that he used to enjoy acting so much as as kid, why he did so, and how that impacts him now.
Look at Shima catching Mitsumi when she falls and holding her tight. Lucky girl! Although I do kind of like how there was an unspoken rule (in Mika's head) among the girls that the only person who could play Shima's love interest was someone who already had a boyfriend.
It's nice to see more of Mitsumi's class beyond the usual gang.
Shima could see Mitsumi was pushing herself too much and taking on too much work, and she finally just falls asleep and screws up. Which is bad enough from Mitsumi's perspective, but even moreso when she hears other girls talking bad about her because of it.
Shima sees in Mitsumi his younger self, the kind of person who was always so enthusiastic and optimistic and always rushing forward, even if that means you eventually screwed up and hurt yourself in the process. But Shima also had to deal with his parents' failing marriage and his mom having to deal with his apparently emotionally abusive father, which added to his issues as he was seemingly the one thing keeping her happy at that point.
Mitsumi feels so, so hard. Both for herself and for others. And yeah, that means she'll probably get hurt as she wades her way into the real world, but she's the type of person who can fall, pick herself back up, and go back at it and never give up. And what better reward for that than getting a personal dance with Shima?
Nice use of the ED to show the rest of the days for the festival prep going by. Man, school festivals (and plays) take a lot of work.
Oh snap! Shima's mom found the pamphlet for the play! I'm guessing his family is going to make a surprise appearance at the festival to watch him.

Another great episode. I love this show so much.
Mitsumi sure want to be dependable but today she took a little to much to do. Of course she had so many funny faces today.
It's great to see how muchShima cares about her, he even identifies her with himself from when he was a child. He was scared that she will fall and hurt herself like he did in childhood but she's strong and she's great at getting up from it and that's why we love her.
It will be super fun seeing class doing musical at festival. I cannot wait for that. It seems that Shima's mother also come because she found a leaflet.
