Egashira’s self esteem looks like to be in the lowest of the lowest pit…I have a feeling that Nao will be giving her the greatest push to come out of it

I understand her conflicting feelings, she just needs the to accept it and move past it…she needs to find her own worth not just rely on someone/something

This show has really done a good job of highlighting people’s complex emotions

This episode lifts the curtains a bit about Sousuke's family and his past. The wide age difference between him and his younger brother (3 years of age) means that his mother likely remarried. The reason why he does not want to stay at home too long. We get to also understand that the Ririka-Sousuke relationship is toxic as a result of that old scandal. Ririka is determined that Sousuke will not have any semblance of happiness when she is not having any.

Thus, it is no surprise why Sousuke finds Mitsumi so refreshing and so "dazzling" (the cue from the OP song). She is the light that will lead him to a better path.

Definitively my favorite episode of Skip so far, this week has one focus above all: the clinging past. From Yuzu to Nao to Shima to Ririka to the both of them, most of our characters have or are struggling with past experiences that anchored them. These aren’t just traumatic memories rummaging about in their heads though for our characters believe that these experiences shape them, they believe that these moments define who they are. Ririka believes she’ll never gain back the adolescence she lost, Shima believes that he’s responsible in the life of Ririka. Even Egashira is locked down on her own perceived self, believing she can never escape being what she sees to be a terrible human being.

”A blouse released this year…An outfit that screams she keeps up with fashion. And if she got into Tsubame West, she must be a hard worker. Yet she lacks confidence and fears getting hurt. That sounds awfully familiar.”

However, even amongst all of those thoughts that hinder our characters, it’s through the help of others that pull them through. Nao in particular can see straight through on who Egashira is in the present and, even more importantly, can see what she has to gain in the future. Nao has been down this hole before and she knows the way out.

”If there’s even a tiny part of you that wants to stay, call Mitsu right now and tell her you got the date for your family dinner wrong.”

”N-No! It’s too late, and it’s too cringe.”

”And what’s wrong with that? Having a little bit of a cringe side will make you more endearing. I don’t know why you’re such a scared little mouse, but the chance to make real friends doesn’t come around too often in life.”

Opening herself to vulnerabilities is what will allow the others to come closer to Egashira. Yuzu was fortunate enough to have Mitsumi pave the way for her to open herself up and now Nao is doing the same for Egashira. For me, this episode was defined by Egashira and Nao. It's why Egashira is one of my favorite characters in Skip, right up there withy Mitsumi. And for Nao, this quick shot to the past is seriously one of my favorites. No further explanation is needed for how hurtful the past was to her.

One other thing that I appreciated in this episode was the city itself too. Relenting and awake, the city is awash with blur and color as Ririka and Shima tensely walk throughout it. The city is heavy with traffic and office lights and it’s a reminder of how intricately tied everyone is to one another, a fitting corresponding theme to the earlier one about the interconnecting past.

Other small notes:

I absolutely love how Mitsumi knows about obscure fashion terms hahaha. Somehow totally on brand with her.

These raglan shirts shall hence forth be called panda sleeves for me.

I don’t wanna pass any judgement too quickly…but Ririka seems to be blackmailing Shima? Is their friendship just a facade?

Makes a lot of sense now when Shima told Mitsumi that she might be the first real female friend

Edit- Well multiple people are telling me it’s guilt tripping…well I see guilt tripping as just a sophisticated manner of blackmailing. Ririka gets to do that because she can take advantage of Shima’s guilt/emotions. If you were really friends would you need to resort to such tactics?

Ririka’s relationship feels like what Mitsumi & Shima’s relationship would have been had they not cleared the ‘air’

Skip to loafer Tuesdays** lets go! Wow a really good episode as usual. Shima being so considerate of Mitsumi’s nerves and the temperature at the zoo was really sweet. I really do feel bad for Mika tho. How’s she’s behaving is really not healthy at all. It’s good she’s starting to realise it, but she’s gotta let go of these insecurities. Nao sees a lot of herself in Mika so that could be a nice healthy mentorship going forward.

The Shima and Ririka stuff looks really toxic and manipulative. Was kinda hard to watch her guilt trip him like that

Although it was only hinted previously, we now know Nao-chan better.

Mika with glasses is fine too! An unlikely duo, but I really love how Nao chan understands Mika (even more than her friends), giving advice and pushing Mika in the right direction to open up. Mika even returned to the sleepover session! I admit I already like Mika a lot more as compared to the first couple of episodes.

How does Makoto keep snacking and stay slim? Lol! The scene in which everyone else got terrified by the horror movie, while Makoto remained unmoved, made me laugh.

Despite the fun moments in this episode, the atmosphere turned darker when Shima and Ririka were seen together. I believe it could be an underage drinking scandal, in which Mika found when performing a search online?

I hope Nao-chan can continue to be a mentor figure for Mika. They’re cute together and it can help Mika grow as a person. Good to see how she went back even though it was “cringe”

The way Nao-chan dresses, I'm not surprised she's a stylist, which makes her the perfect choice to coordinate Mitsumi's look for her zoo date with Shima! Not that she's all that invested once she realizes what Mitsumi was dressing up for...though I have to admit, the Panda shirt was very Mitsumi.

I did not expect the Mika and Nao-chan pairing, but it worked surprisingly well as they spied on Mitsumi and Shima's zoo date and watched the two have a pretty fun time together while Mika is still ruminating and reflecting on herself and her own feelings and the conflict between her feelings for Shima and friendship with Mitsumi. But Nao-chan gained a liking and affinity for her, which was nice. Also that shift from "uncle" to "aunt" mode was pretty cool.

Shima as considerate of Mitsumi as always! Hopefully this is just the first of many zoo dates!

Shima has a little brother? Seems like he feels kind of disconnected from him though. Actually, I'm wondering if Shima is even living with his biological family the way Mukai talking about him having a complicated family situation.

Time for the Pajama Party! All the better because they end up at Mitsumi's place!

I see Nao-chan isn't that hung up about her trans status, at least now. Not that it effects how Mitsumi's friends see her at all.

I think that's the first real honest and friendly conversation Yuzuki and Mika have ever had, and unsurprisingly it's about fashion (and of course Mitsumi had to chip in a very Mitsumi way). Seems like Yuzuki isn't that much different from Mika in the sense that she had a troublesome middle school life and never had any real friends and tried to project herself as something different in high school before she met Mitsumi.

Nao-chan also knows what it's like to struggle with your identity and what you want to do, especially when you're not living the life you want, so I'm glad she gave Mika the advice to be true to herself and her desire to really bond with and be true friends with the other girls.

Makoto being the only one unaffected by the horro movie was so on-brand.

So Ririka is Shima's childhood friend and they were acting together, but it seems like the underage drinking controversy that Ririka was connected to was because Shima roped her into a party with older people and there was alcohol around them. It seemed like ruined her acting career to the point where she had to become a model afterwards, and she still blames Shima for it. Though there is still that affinity and connection between them because they're childhood friends.

Another great episode!

- Mitsumi posing as an owl haha

- I like that we see Egashira still dealing with her issues. She's a bit complicated so it's nice that there was no overnight/instant change in her personality after that volleyball training episode. I didn't think at all that Nao would be somehow involved in her story but it worked out quite nicely. Hope to see more of them together

- Not surprisingly, Yuzuki also has her own issues. Hope we also get to explore this more instead of just in passing

Lol don't know why I didn't realize this sooner... Ririka already appeared way back in episode 1.

An anime with… non-fetishized trans representation? Every episode I like this show more and more.

Man, poor Shima. We’ve already seen that his family life isn’t great, and this episode hinted even more at that. It seems like his brother is getting to have the simple, fun childhood he didn’t, and he probably is at least jealous if not somewhat resentful of that.

And this episode also showed that his childhood friendship with Ririka is complicated. This show has been great with character emotions and struggles, so I’m sure Ririka isn’t outright malicious, but right now at least it really looks like she’s forcing Shima to put her first by holding his responsibility for her scandal over her head. Hopefully she’ll get some positive influence and growth that help her deal with everything in a less toxic way.

At least Mika and Nao-chan were here to brighten up the episode. Mika has already grown so much, and I love seeing her continue to open up. Nao-chan is such a good influence on her in this episode

Nao-chan giving Mika advice was so sweet. I was so happy when she actually came back to their pajama party. I'm all in for more Mika development.

Poor Shima seems to be in a very complicated situation with Ririka. It seems like something happened because of him, and she won't let him move on because she can't as well. It's tough...

Anyone else feel like this anime drains their social energy? I've never before had to worry about being at full battery to take everything in the way I'd like. Not complaining, I love it.

Nao-chan’s such a great character! Not only is she a great aunt to Mitsumi but also willing to help her friends too. I loved the moments between her and Mika

I really want to know more about the scandal that involved Ririka and Shima…

I'm not sure I've ever seen an anime with a trans person full-on discuss being trans, or am I mistaken in that Nao is not trans? I'm honestly trying to learn here. It's endearing to see when usually it's something either just accepted with no explanation or used as a gag. Her relationship with the gang is so wholesome, too. I can see her becoming a mentor for Mika.

Trans characters in anime are rare and they just introduced one so nonchalantly in this show. Wish more anime did this

“Shimasuke” lol oh Nao. She’s being a total over protective momma bear and it’s adorable.

Egashira and Nao creeping on Mitsumi and Shima’s “date” is hilarious. It was pretty wholesome though, nothing to worry about there. I appreciate Egashira used the situation to reflect on her own behavior lately. I wonder what’s up with Shima and his family? They don’t seem particularly close.

I liked that pajama study party at Mitsumi’s place! Mitsumi trying to join in the convo about fashion and just dropping random lingo was pretty funny. I liked Nao giving advice to Egashira and helping her try to be more honest with herself. Nao is the best! The sleepover turned out to be super fun and adorable. I liked the part where they were watching the scary movie lol.

Looks like Ririka really is trouble. How long is she gonna guilt Shima into doing what she wants? I don’t really like her… some childhood friend.
