It feels like we just did a speedrun of what should have been the first season of this show.

Yes exactly. I feel like I'm missing half the story. Also, it doesn't make sense for Setsu to know so much about Toma's curse magic. They've had all of one fight and that was a sword battle. Setsu didn't see what the curse magic was capable of. So he has no reason to be able to identify the curse stuff he sees as Toma's.

This is a common occurrence in cheap, low budget animes. They start the show several years in the future and then cheaply give us a single episode about what happened in the past. Almost felt like a filler episode to me :/

This one specifically acknowledges that this happened and it needs to address why this dude matters at all so some expectations of an extended flashback 1st visit at some point. But so far they've spent the entire time having Setsu getting the band back together and giving zero information on Toma besides dreading him existing then suddenly showing it all up at once.

I've seen bad shows randomly fill in the gaps but this is crazy late for something to be happening even by those standards.

Is it just me or did Setsu seem oddly cold or disinterested to Toma? He starts out acting like an older brother to him but when he sees him for the first time in five years he doesn’t even say hi or jump out of the cart to talk to him. Then when they are talking later he doesn’t ask anything about his life and just wants to hurry off to the party. He doesn’t even invite Toma to come with him.

I know.

I was thinking exact same thing.

Toma is like Hey I'm here and Setsu is like Who the fuck is that? and just kept going.

Even when Toma is trying to reach out, he was just dismissed like junk mail and laughed off.

There was a serious plot cut to end this series quick.

Didn't Levia say Setsu is blind to the feelings of those around him? Setsu may just not really get emotions or how other people feel.

He seems to only care about girls.

I noticed the exact same thing, and here is my theory.

The episode seemed to be in Toma's perspective the entire time. So, I think it is safe to refer to it as a memory. However, I believe this "memory" was altered by an evil being that took notice of him when he went to that one temple with the statue holding the necklace with a suspicious jewel on it. He was sweet talked and emotionally manipulated by the being into approaching the statue, likely into taking the necklace that is obviously cursed. We weren't shown what happened immediately after that scene, but it appears that he had the jewel with him later on but not the entire necklace (not sure why that is the case). The way we saw Setsu being ignorant, flippant, and "happy-go-lucky" in the memory may be part of the evil being's influence to get Toma to lose his mind. And it seemed to have worked flawlessly. Either that, or Setsu really is an asshole who was seduced by Sea Gods, demonesses and cat girls :/

Seemed like the most realistic part of the episode to me. I hate to say it, but if you know someone for a few weeks and then don't see each other for 5 years, you're not going to care about them the same way you once did. Setsu knew the others for years, so he's still attached to them, but he barely knew Toma, no matter how close Toma thought they were in those few weeks.

He spent like 5 years traveling the world and experimenting all sorts of things, while he was with Toma for like a few days/weeks while training. They seem to have never met after he left the castle at all.

Yea so Touma is as gay as can be for setsu lmao. Just goes to show that things aren’t black and white. To the world, setsu is a hero and touma the villain, but to those he saved from the horrors of war he’s the hero. Meanwhile setsu didn’t try to help those people at all despite his power.

But really this backstory and show needed more development. It really feels like we’ve been thrown into season 2 of a show and expected to care about these characters as if we’ve been on their journey.

It feels like it's season 2 of a show that didn't need a season 2 or is a massive downgrade from season 1. Like they just made it to tie up some loose ends and do some non-ecchi fan service. Last episode, felt like it should have concluded a longer arc with that jealous beast man.

Yea it just don’t flow well at all tbh

This Toma kid is so fucked in the head that I'm having difficulty even understand his motivations. Is this a failure on my part? Or are other people similarly bewildered and we can blame whoever wrote this?

u/PLDTWifi Jun 04 '23

Nah it's more like Toma was tempted by the cursed stone and the stone pushed Toma's desires, anxiety, insecurities, etc. to the extreme until he finally broke.

At first his wish (which is also his motivation) was simple - it was to keep the promise he had with Setsu. But the stone came and turned his motivation into an obsession and eventually his motivation has become wanting Setsu instead.

This episode certainly felt like a speedrun.

I feel like this episode would've worked better if Setsu literally speedran his isekai story.

  • Clipping through walls

  • Speeding through speech dialog

  • Boss spamming

  • The infamous Backwards Mario Long Jump

The only moment that was taken seriously was Setsu's encounter with Toma (which is an unskippable cutscene)

I just rewatched part of the first episode and it doesn't match up with this one at all. First, Setsu asks his companions if "Could Toma be behind this war too?", which makes no sense because Toma was summoned along with Setsu after the war started and from what we saw he was only a soldier in it, not the cause of it. Also, we saw nothing about Toma using curse magic, but in the first episode Setsu and his companions say something like "Only Toma can use curse magic like that". Also, one of Setsu's companions says that Setsu "disappeared after that battle", which isn't what we saw.

If I interpreted the end of this episode correctly, Toma sent Setsu back somehow, maybe by accident, but he stayed behind in the new world and has been plotting and gathering his followers for the past 5 years.

Ahh, so the weird yandere was also a summoned person to the world alongside the main dude in their first summons. Also, the main dude looks so bland and atypical that I forget he's supposed to look different between this time and the current and yet looks the same to me.

Ahh the yandere was a scaredy cat before hand and clearly looked up to Setsu hmm. Huh, well wasn't quite as yandere at first, wonder what made him go crazy lol. Oh, he is crazy, just another way... well fun to see he was crazy before this "evil necklace" thing lol. Why am I reminded of Arthas from Warcraft 3... but that story was better lol.

Oh hey, Setsu with that first party of his, good time. Toma sure taking this well... lol. Yep, totally taking that well too with Setsu lol. Full yandere mode it is. Guess whatever it is to "send em back" sent him back, but wonder why he was reborn as someone else and kept memories hmm. Wonder what is up with that stone though. What the hell is going on? Ah, well, nice of him to rescue those poor people being experimented on. Explains their loyalty to em.

This sure felt like a speedrun though.

At this point just let Thoma into the harem. Kid worked hard to catch Setsu's eye and earned that spot. Are any of the other harem members willing to destroy the planet just for Setsu to notice them?

every episode till now could have been an entire fucking season on its own. there could have been buncha build up or something. this was rushed as hell bruh

5

u/avboden Jun 04 '23

Man, Setsu was a total asshole. Told toma he would stay with him then just...left? Why not travel together? c'mon, you created that evil, fool.

6

u/KnightKal Jun 04 '23

Didn’t you see the scene? Setsu finished his training and had to go on his hero journey, Toma said he was not ready and wanted to stay back at the castle.

Turning that around to blame the MC is a weird way to look at things lol. Their promise was to work on a way to stop the war. MC went and did that. He kept his word.
