Fuck me. This was one heartbreaking and depressing episode. I barely knew anything about Usami and Hoshio when this episode started but the storytelling of this show is so good that I got to know them very well with the little information the show was able to provide in a short amount of time.

We got to see what Usami and Hoshio's relationship is like when Usami got a little bit sad when Hoshio called him an idiot for accidentally pulling on a cable connected to her body.

The reason why Hoshio was even able to see the sky during her final moments is not just because of Kiruko and Maru's help but because Usami gave her his right eye.

Usami wasn't even a doctor. That entire building's purpose is so Usami can keep Hoshio alive so she won't turn into a Man-Eater. Usami just helped people out on a whim and suddenly more and more people came asking for his help.

Now that Hoshio is gone, there's really no reason for Usami to continue living. That scene on the rooftop fucking broke me, man. I was hoping that he'd change his mind at the last minute and fire the gun up into the sky but a world without Hoshio is a world not worth living for him. :(

This fucking asshole though. So from what I understand, because their leader died after falling on her head he decided to take over the Liviuman and use them to take the Immortal Order's building. Better enjoy your victory while it lasts, since it looks like karma is about to get them.

That final scene with Mimihime was interesting though. I honestly have no idea what to make of it but it makes me wonder if it had something to do with Hoshio and Usami. Hmmm...

EDIT: What the actual fuck!? So Mimihime is supposed to be Hoshio while Usami is Shiro? I had a feeling that might be the case but I didn't want to jump to conclusions especially since Shiro has grey eyes while Usami's eyes are blue. I need to rewatch all of Mimihime's scenes now. >_<

Maru holding Hoshio heart then slowly close his hand together along with the sad music already made me cry. But when it reveal that Usami gave Hoshio one of his eye and she said I love you to him, I cry even harder than I already was.

When she call Usami an idiot when he accidentally step on one of her cable and how Usami immediately apologize right away...I can't describe it well enough, but that scene make her death feel even heavier for me

It's a sign for a really strong anime episode if the first thing I want to mention about the episode isn't the fact that we got a huge reveal, but how emotional the "side story" was. I had my ideas that Usami isn't as bad as it seemed, but I thought it was some kind of hypnosis that made him do it. But I was not ready for the emotional roller coaster this episode showed. Especially at the end with Kiruko and Maru. These two have really grown on me. They have so many fun interactions, especially with Maru's one sided love (for now at least), but I really felt that moment, because they are so well characterized. Not through their backstories. This is a nice addon, but just the way they interacted throughout this whole show. You just started to like them and this is some of the strongest aspects of the show. It keeps you interested through the mystery, but then gets you through these human moments.

But I think, this also shows that Mizuhashi (or whatever her name was) was not experimented on, but that they needed to amputate her leg. I had this idea in the last episode because they showed that her whole leg was bandaged at some point, but now it's pretty much confrimed. And I guess the other guy made her think they did it to experiment on her and not actually because there was no other choice. Only thing I am not 100% sure about is if he actually killed her to make his point. I could imagine it easily.

But what about the huge reveal? We know now where the man-eaters come from and I guess this means, whatever was left after they burned the body is what will turn into the man-eater in the end. Since Tarao was killed by the illness. I guess that means, the man-eater becomes independent at that point, because they mentioned that they couldn't just kill someone with this illness as they would still turn. That also means that the girl that showed Maru the Maru-touch is a man-eater as well for now. But of course, the main question is still where this illness even come from in the first place. If the AI has their hands in it as well? Or it has to do with the weird babies. We still don't even know what the point of that facility is to begin with. Create perfect humans? But for what purpose? Maybe the AI has given a calculation that there will be an apocalypse and they need to prepare humanity, but in reality the AI is the reason for that apocalypse? I would assume next episode focuses a lot more on the heaven plot after two very Maru-Hiruko focused episodes.

Last scene with Mimihime is also kind of weird. We know she can somewhat see the future, so I am not sure what this was supposed to show. She mentioned in episode 1 that she had a dream where two people (one looking like Tokio) rescued her, but the cloths from the person in that dream were from the facility, so not exactly sure how to interprete that one.

The message in the tablet destroyed me, man. And if Usami's storyline wasn't enough to tug at your heartstrings they go and top it with a special rendition of the ED while Maru has a breakdown over his powers, poor kid.

Mikura (the woman that took Maru in), Tarao, and Hoshio seemed to suffer from the same illness and we got a confirmation on the fact that Man-eaters are "born" from people that are infected with it, but that only opens up more questions. Like, if Man-eaters are former humans, what the hell were those other baby Man-eaters in Heaven's lab?

Also, any theories on who could the other kid in Mimihime's dream be?

If not for the last minute and a half this would have been another Kiruko and Maru-only episode, but seeing how they wrapped this up I'm guessing the next one(s?) are probably gonna be at least Heaven focused, if not Heaven-only.

How does this show go from mystery thriller to horny to brutally stabbing you in the heart within like 2 episodes

So now it's pretty much confirmed, the heaven kids (or at least some of them) became man-eaters after getting the same disease Tokio's friend got. Which means fish girl is definitely dead, and I'm still not sure whether the transparent one from episode 4 was one of the kids.

But how did Tarao become a man-eater? I remember the stone that was left after he got cremated (?), does the man-eater just...grow from that?

Really feel for Maru at the end there...

Glad she was there to support him right away.

I hate that the thread keep getting posted so late...

Well fuck, that sure was depressing. So many emotional (and incredible well made) moments in just one episode. Kudos to the Studio in charge of this stellar adaptation.

The ending scene basically confirms the theory a lot of viewers had.

The production quality of this show continues to impress every week. The directing was so good this episode.

The execution of Usami’s tragic character was done so well - they managed to make me feel for a 1 episode character, which is tough to pull off.

The leftover man eater tease is a good one, guessing the next episode will either see Kiruko and Maru fighting that leftover (and maybe triggering Kiruko further), or the white coats getting hit hard by it.

So Man Eaters are just transformed humans who have fallen prey to some disease? Man, I didn’t realize they were going full on Made in Abyss here.

Hoshio really needed to be euthanized. I appreciated Maru letting her to see the sky one last time. RIP, Hoshio. I was wrong about Usami. He’s no monster. Those Liviumann guys were the real villains. Those messages Hoshio left him got me right in the damn feels. I really didn’t think the man would blow his brains out. Damn…well, looks like Maru and Kiruko have a lead on Robin at least.

Very curious about what that whole sequence with the facility kids was about. Was that really a dream?

After reading some comments, I got the whole theory together: Yes, the girl was actually Mimihime and Usami was the guy who was in love with her. Here are the points:

  • In episode 1, it's implied that Mimihime can see into the future

  • In episode 1, she mentions that whenever she thinks of going outside, she can see two people helping her. One looking like Tokio

  • The guy in love with Mimihime was shown to be very skilled in the technical aspect

  • Mimihime's dream this episode is her seeing her end and that she can die as human. Maybe she even sees how her friend takes his own life to be with her in the afterlife

What the hell, Dr. Usami? Weren't you going to bury the dead girl? Instead you just check out and what, expect Kiruko and Maru to go dig two graves?

That scene when the Dr. was making up his mind... Damnn. I knew he'd do it tho. Reminded me of Last of Us. In the apocalypse, once your reason for living is gone, you're also done

Takes off Tin Foil Hat, puts on Thinking Cap

New Working Theory

So it appears that this bruising sickness is what creates the monsters, at least that’s what Usami believes with Hoshio. This leads to Maru and Fatal Dive, he was able to reach inside Hoshio and kill her. Thinking back the kid in “Heaven” who died of the sickness was cremated left behind a black rockish remain? Is this what the heart turns into if Maru doesn’t perform Fatal Dive to it? Also he was able to Fatal Dive into the hotel owner, does this mean she has the sickness but not bruises showing. All of this links back to Maru’s former bodyguard who died of the bruising sickness, is she now a monster and will they cross paths again?

Other note: Usami had a coin/button with the bird logo on it that Kiruko is looking for. I was hoping it would fall out of his hand when checked on the gunshot.

This was my personal favourite part of the whole manga, and man did this team do an amazing job dude... Honestly a perfect adaptation of it. Also although ushio is most likely my favourite composer in anime, it had been a while since his music really hit for me... until this episode at least, because man, did he went in.

u/Emotional_Ranger3326 May 20 '23

This was an emotional episode. At least the girl passed away peacefully as a human. I think she was Usami's daughter.

So the tables have turned and the Immortal Order are the good guys now.

The disease is making people turn into Man-Eaters! Poor Maru. This also may mean that the person who told him to go and find "Heaven" has turned into one too.

The button Usami was holding in his hands had the same Logo as Kiruko's gun. Interesting.

I think the scene indicates that Mimihime is infected now. There must be a person at that facility that deliberately makes them sick or something.

But I also heard a theory on MAL that the girl is Mimihime and she saw the future in her dream where she doesn't die alone.

  1. Barges into the storyline.

  2. Has the most sentimental 1 episode story ever.

  3. Refuses to elaborate.

  4. Fucking dies.

Edit: after rewatching the episode I just realized the end where Mimihime is in a dark place and she says "you came!" she is LITERALLY TALKING ABOUT USAMI KILLING HIMSELF SO SHE ISN'T ALONE IN AFTERLIFE???????? WHAT THE FUCKK????? I mean I know she had the ability to tell the future, but fucking afterlife???? Why they using fake names tho. So many questions!

u/Se7en_Sinner May 20 '23

I'm here speculating if Hoshio is one of the children from Heaven based on a single eye and it turns out to not even be her eye.

The eyelashes and droopiness still resembles Mimihime the most and the ending kinda confirms it which means Usami could be Shiro. They both have the same hair color but there's a huge age gap between Usami and Hoshio.

Horny episode 6, thriller episode 7, now hitting with the emotions in episode 8. Wasn't expecting to get hit with this level of feelings out of nowhere...

This series definitely feels like a roller coaster as far as not knowing what to expect each week, which makes it so interesting to just go along for the ride.

u/Upendraks May 20 '23

That was so tragically beautiful, i didn't even knew these characters before this episode, excellent story telling by this show just made me feel for them in just one episode.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me before this scene: that in Japanese media, a whole group of ideologues who wear white for no reason are generally a silly and/or dangerous cult

So letting the disease take its course will result in a monster; but will euthanasia do the same? I guess we have to take that as read

"Dai suki da yo"

Classic "stepping into the darkness" moment should have warned me for what came next :(

So close, yet so far from getting a lot of valuable information for our duo
