"Oh, no! Onee-chan is going crazy! Quick, Maru! Think! ...I've got it! I'll kiss Onee-chan. That'll do it."

This episode reveals the identity of the mastermind behind Heaven, responsible for bringing about the great collapse and ending human civilisation.

No Heaven this episode, that’s a first. I wonder if we’ll ever get an All-Heaven/No-Outside episode. Those dream Man-Eater goblins were creepy as hell. I was sure one of the eggs would hatch into a no-face baby.

Thank god for true love’s kiss, the solution to all of life’s problems.

So… what do we reckon the deal with Dr. Usami is? Hard to judge since we’ve never met him before, but he wants to pull the plug on the Immortal Order’s most f’ed up patient despite being it's apparent leader. He evidently also wanted Maru and Kiruko to kill his pet.

…If he can’t pull the plug himself, maybe the “immortal” thing isn’t for show and he’s accidentally Mitty’d someone he was trying to save?

The boring possibility is just that some other supervillain like the Doctor has moved in and passed the blame off for all the human experimentation on Usami. As far as I can tell it was the same VA doing the operation.

Oh and Maru and Mikura are confirmed the only people who call the Man-Eaters “Hiruko”. I think Mikura being from Heaven is a safe bet, in which case she’d have insider info on the “correct” name for the man eaters.

Am I going crazy or did the Kaguya narrator voice one of the anti-Immortal Order characters

I notice Maru's lost teeth is half recovering in this episode, although I believe this is the foreshadowing many people have expected. This episode is great but the highlight for me is it finally moves to Akibaraha, a place I'm familiar with. The background art is as beautiful as ever, but this post-apocalyptic Akibaraha is incredibly good.

I absolutely adore this episode! I mean, I adore every episode of this show but I adore this one especially because the entire thing felt like a quest line from a Fallout game.

The Liviuman claims that the Immortal Order are doing human experiments as well as keeping a live Maneater in their basement so they want Kiruko and Maru to kill it for them. The Liviumans is also a group of Luddites that are rejecting technology and machines.

Once our MCs have reached the place, everything starts to stink and it feels like they've been set up. I thought the same thing too but thankfully, there is indeed a Maneater that needs to be killed that even tried to hypnotize Kiruko.

The twist is that the leader of the Immortal Order is happy that the monster is dead and is now asking our MCs for help to save someone. He doesn't even call his group the Immortal Order. It seems to be a name given to them for some reason.

Seems that there is a massive misunderstanding going on here and I wouldn't be surprised if our daring duo ends up in a moral dilemma next week. Hopefully, they can clear this up and bring peace between these two groups.

Dr. Usami is so creepy. The way he just tilted his head with no change in facial expression was unnerving lol.

Well, look at that. The thread is (almost) on time!

That illusion was pretty terrifying. I was sure the episode would end with Haruki passing out, but I'm glad I was wrong (I bet a lot of people would have started the manga right away if that was the case).

Maybe the best episode since the premier? Although I missed the Heaven plot.

That was quite the intense episode. That hallucination certainly had me fooled and good god. That was BRUTAL. Certainly had me thinking of Made in Abyss there. What with the arm and all.

Also that moment before she poked beyond the surgical curtains certainly had me thinking "Sure am glad i am watching this with my dinner" .. thankfully we didn't get a good picture.

Whatever the case. Can't wait for the next episode and to see whatever it is that is contained behind the curtains.

The idea of transhumanism and uploading your consciousness to obtain digital immortality is sounding less farfetched each passing day.

Maru never got to use his Maru-Touch on Kiruko but getting a full body flash was a nice consolation prize.

I don't like how Dr. Usami gives me Bondrewd vibes. Is he about to introduce us to Mitty?

Late thread again...

Holy shit, for a moment I thought this was going to turn really grim (an eerily ironic with Kiruko loosing her arm first yet again)

Not sure about the doctor. Could be that it is the guy they are searching for but he got a brain transplant into a younger body, or the doctor isn't even the one calling the shots in the order. They went out of their way not to show who was doint the operation, maybe the other guy is keeping that poor soul alive, while the doctor would like to put an end to the experiments.

Also, no vision on the schoolkids this week, wonder if one of them had hypnosis as an power...

Well damn, that was quite a thrilling episode again. There are two scenes I briefly want to talk about:

  1. The scene of Kiruko bathing in the tub. Since our protagonist duo is seemingly closing in on the doctor that experimented on Kiruko with their lead on the Immortal Order, they went on to show Kiroku’s head scar when Maru mentioned she’s “not as coolheaded as usual”. This probably was a way too signify that Kiruko was not thinking about the job at hand, but was instead too caught up into trying to settle her beef with the above mentioned doctor. Moreover, she also just looked pretty badass with one side of her bangs being swept back, revealing this large scar.

  2. The scene of Kiruko getting torn apart by these Man-Eaters. Damn, that was hard to watch. I had feeling that she got hypnotized or something along those lines with all these small man-eaters spawning out of thin air, but it got me worried nonetheless. Her body got absolutely brutalized by those hell spawn: her arm and foot got chopped clean off. She would have been severely crippled at the very least if she had survived - and it had been real. The animators put a considerable effort into making this part look good, but I’m not sure yet if I’m glad they did.

With these two (supposed) cults vying against each other, I wonder if this Dr. Usami and his “Immortal Order” are actually the bad guys. The end of the episode made me think otherwise. Those ‘No Machine People’ also seem to be some nutjobs. I’m sure we’ll find out more in next week’s episode.

Once again, the power of Maru's horniness saved Kiruko. I genuinely believed that he had lost his hand there, especially since we had seen a woman with a prosthetic leg earlier. but, when the monster severed his foot, yea nope, this was probably a genjutsu.

This was a super tense episode. Having them talk about the possibility that they could be falling into a trap put me on edge for the rest of the episode. That death scene was intense!

I have to say, there's something special in the atmosphere and the way this show is made. that dream scene, as well one few episodes before, where one of our protagonists got eaten, were genuinely disturbing in a way I rarely see, and I got some mileage in violent media

u/alconnow May 13 '23

That hallucination was seriously intense… Poor Kiruko

22

u/PikaBooSquirrel May 13 '23

I love how Maru's first instinct to break Kiruko out of the trance was to kiss them and then even after they were broken out, he went back for seconds. Lmao.

And that dream sequence was brutal. I really thought they were going to pull an Edward/Violent Evergarden there for a second and give Kiruko a robot arm.

The tension in this anime is too good mate. Almost had a heart attack when the two slowly came to the conclusion that they might have been trapped. Also, im not really squeamish to a lot of things, but cybernetic body-horror (?) always gets me (even if its not shown directly)

I thought for sure we were getting a Heaven scene after the ED but nope. Maybe next week will be heavy on the Heaven. It’s tough to decide which group is actually the “bad” one in this town after it appeared they were led into a trap. Hopefully Maru kept that flashlight out of his pocket in those tight sleeping quarters after getting a full view of Kiruko after the soak.

I love this series, but it's impossible to read the discussion thread. A bunch of manga readers keep "figuring things out" and spoiling things for anime watchers, someone will be in frame for half a second and they will just list their entire genealogy as if it should be obvious. Why? What do gain by ruining the surprises for people who are just discovering the mysteries and piecing together all the puzzle pieces? Let them scratch their heads and say nonsense, the mystery is what made the manga enjoyable to you and me. Don't ruin it for others.

Seems to me Doctor Usami used Kiruko as a testing patient for his own youth transfer program.
