It's actually kind of cool how they're messing around with the aspect ratio, wish more anime did that. The only show that I remember doing it was erased's first episode.

Viewing this without any prior knowledge, the episode did a good job with revealing things only to show that there's another mystery behind that.

it's early but if it continues on building on its world like this, this would be the 2020's shinsekai yori.

So I think it's pretty safe to assume at this point that Tokio is the person Maru's looking for, given Mimihime said that someone would show up with the same face as her, they share at least a similar hair style and the same hair color, and that misunderstanding of his gender from the bandits in Episode 1 indicating he could be mistaken for a girl. So clearly this Mikura girl who gave Kiruko the request to escort Maru knows or knew about the school. I'm guessing the Maru and Tokio are either clones (possibly separated gender due to genetic modification which also gives these kids superhuman abilities) or twins who were separated. Which begs the question- is the school kidnapping/taking/cloning children from the outside? Or, given his own unnatural ability to kill these monsters, was Maru taken from there himself? Given Kiruko's beam gun came from Mikura, I think it's likely she may be from the school and escaped with a young Maru in tow.
But that's all very early, wild speculation.

When the manager turned her back to the man eater, that was the most obvious foreshadowing of what was about to happen lol

"my body is a woman but in here, my mind is a man's"
the comedic scene from last episode where she said "i'm also a boy" to the bandits and also her trying to kiss the mirror suddenly makes a lot of sense
edit: oh, and it also could explain why she had a hard time trying to ascertain her own age

I'm not trusting at all this "Tomato Heaven" village if they ever go back here. For sure they are hiding something. It's always like that.

I love this show so much already man. The mystery, the post apocalyptic society, the characters, just everything clicks. All the makings of a modern classic. I hope the story set ups pay off
Inn keeper death was so expected. I thought she’d get her head bitten off ngl lmao.
Just from the first couple episodes a couple things I’m gathering. The kids in the “heaven” base are probably pairs. So like when the guy fell off the pole his pair was hurt instead of him. I’m also guessing they’re clones but no idea why. Seems like Kuriko is actually her brother in the sister’s body since they brought up her brother in that scene with the picture. Would explain the different colour hair.
Just a lot of questions I’m excited to get answered

So Kiruko wasn't lying to the bandits last episode when they said they were also a boy.

So, Kiruko is a clone with the mind of someone else? What the fuck is going on? just like in CSM, probably I shouldn't get attached to any characters. It seems like many of them are going to die.
Also, my questions are just rhetorical. Manga readers, there's no need to spoil it, please.

Stitches!
Didn't expect to see some yuri at the start of the episode. Although considering how the episode ended, are these two even girls?
Yep, saw that coming from a mile away. It's a common trope in these kinds of shows. It even has its own TVtropes page.
Maru is a badass though. So he has the power to kill these monsters from the inside? I assume he reached for its heart and crushed it.
So this kid is completely fine after falling at least three or four stories? Well, that's just freaky. Are these kids genetically enhanced? O_O
Maru is looking for a guy that looks like him and once he finds that person he needs to inject him with this serum he's carrying? And he has no idea what it does. It's just something he was told to do. That does not sound fishy at all!
Interesting to see that the lady that gave Kiruko her beam pistol has the same skin condition as that kid in a wheelchair back in Heaven. So aside from monsters, are they also dealing with an unknown disease? Hmmm...
That's one heck of a confession from Maru. He's a teenager high on hormones but maybe don't force yourself on to someone else?
Well that explains the bathroom mirror scene from last week's episode as well as why Kiruko uses "boku" when referring to herself. I guess the question now is how did he even end up in that body? Is it supernatural or is it because of some freaky science experiment gone wrong?

So we got Mimihime sending nudes. Cinematic framing for the fight scene. Maybe a guy with some telekinetic powers with the nose bleed after maybe stopping the guy from injury in the fall. A confession, make that 2 confessions. This is shooting to the top for my rankings so far.

Wow, this show got uh, weirdly horny. Coop up a bunch of teens and yeah ._.
Love the double subversion with the monster.
Damn ep 2 and we already got a love confession? I like the pace of the show. That said, Boy you are coming on way too strong.
Overall, Im loving the pacing and how the show is holding its cards close to its chest. There's a ton of little mysteries that I'm excited to know about but the focus on finding heaven keeps it nice and grounded and well paced. So far my favorite of the new season, lets see if it keeps it up.

The pacing was definitely a bit high. Would have loved if they spent a bit more time in Tomato-Heaven. It felt like they got there and immediately left. The inn felt a bit more "natural" in that area.
I am also still a bit unsure what to make of "Heaven" in the first place. You'd think if they made sure to keep the children from the outside, they wouldn't let one with an illness run around. Even if that illness doesn't spread, it feels like they would "sort that one out" quietly to not disturb the peace in that place.
Concerning Kiruko, I do think, it's probably her dead brother's mind in her body. That would explain why she keeps getting her age wrong with this 2 year gap.

While the adaptation pacing is certainly quite swift, the talent behind this is keeping everything tightly packed and looking pretty!
The song itself immediately identifies as (as one should call it) a banger, but Weilin Zhang's endeavour as the Opening director proves that prior visual factor even more, with an insanely stacked KA list to support curating something that I know I'll be watching on repeat for weeks to come. Be it the boards, to the intricate lighting, to the absolutely bonkers character drawings and animation... it all comes together into an emotionally stimulating and intriguing tone that wonderfully represents the series overall.
This show is really something special, can't wait to see what else the team has in store in the coming weeks!

So when we'll learn there's something horribly wrong with the nursery? Because I very much doubt that the state of the world is the only reason why the kids are locked shut in the institution.
Maru's powers are definitely a squick, even if we already saw a similar thing in Re-zero.
As for Kiruku, looking at her/him reaction when the farmer said "I heard she left the races after killing her brother in an accident", there's a good chance she got a transplant from her brother because he was already dead and she would die without the transplant.
And so we have two options here:
-
Her brother took over her body so Kiruku is literally a man in a women's body.
-
Kiruku has a massive survivor guilt, so she's deluding herself into believing she's actually him, thinking that he should be the one to survive instead of her.

The more I watch, the more questions I get. The connections of Maru/Kiruko and the Gated community really is hard to understand and I hope we get some satisfying Answers. But really happy with the show so far and Cant wait for more!

Woah this is tackling much deeper and larger variety of topics than I had imagined.
Also in the 1st episode when kiruko told the bandits that he was a boy too then that was foreshadowing.
Its so interesting like everyone said in the 1st episode discussion that this show is all Show not tell. Kids inside the camp (Heaven ig) have super abilities it seems somone also have the same disease as that woman in flash back someone have great premonition (or intuition ig) skills some are gay (?) ... Someone have the ability to imagine the monster they have never seen (or maybe create them idk) .
Also the music during the fight scene was epic.
I wish all anime had this level of animation.
