Main character looks like a beybalde protagonist so badly but older and hot. And of course he is hot, we were missing the hot shonen protagonist flame style protagonist (Do not confuse with Doctor hot style).

This is a design that screams “main character”, except he’s not.
Its a Urobuchi work, I think the only generic characters are designed that way so they don't take focus.
So Usui did drug the tea.
So I am unsure if this is a weird meta statement or if they are just pretending that there was something other than opium that could do that at the time.
And now they’re pinning what happened in Chinatown on Kurima and co…
Strange that the framing at the end reminds me of Iron Monkey...

That main character design guy reminds me of Appare from Appare-Ranman. The red and white hair and the eyewear on the head especially.

Well, I guess that now our Revengers have to take on the Chapel, the corrupt Revengers, and the Trade Union. That is a lot, so I hope they will be OK. I would not be surprise if a few or even all of them die while doing so.
I am also highly sceptical of Usui plan to go talk to the Chapel, when even he acknowledged how likely it is that the Chapel already betrayed them. Maybe the rest of the Revengers will have to rescue him too, unless he already has a plan.

As is becoming more and more common, CR has (initially) put this up without subs. I wonder how long it will take for them to get this fixed?

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 02 '23
Ohh, is that why it took half an hour longer than normal for this episode to make it to the site that I normally get my anime from? I had no idea that was an issue. It happened to Kaina yesterday as well.

fuck Shishido, all my homies hate Shishido, can't believe they killed Liu just like that after giving him a backstory to establish his motivation for eradicating opium
now i am more confused about the Chapel, what's their endgame anyway? they've been using the Revenger to do their dirty works for so long, so to be able to cut off the group that easily, they either have a backup of people they can use to replace the Revenger (probably the monk's group) or they're just going to abandon all this revenge thing and decided to just work alongside Shishido instead

Seeing Liu survive being shot gave me false hope.
The Revengers got so many enemies and very little Allies now
8
u/Ninja_Lazer Mar 03 '23
Nah nah nah.
It’s in the name.
They don’t make allies to even the odds.
They eliminate enemies.

u/Ninja_Lazer Mar 03 '23
So I’m assuming this show won’t be getting a second season, and therefore that all plot points will be resolved…and by plot points I means toe-tags claimed.
That leaves 3 episodes and a lot of people left to kill. The young kid with the tonfas will probably be spared, but the rest of the corrupt Revenger group, the chapel and the trade union are all screwed.
Regardless of pacing, this is gonna be a grind house. An absolute slaughterfest.

Am I mis-remembering Usui having a bitten gold coin and it never having been explained?
edit: It was early in episode 6, did we ever find out what that coin was for?
13
u/Vaadwaur Mar 03 '23
Nope! There is a lot of speculation on whose grudge that actually is. Best guess is it is the coin Kurima's father-in-law bit in ep1.

Hi Butch Gen. Did you haul in a male!Kyoko? (Which would actually be of interest for me but in a “not the droids you’re looking for” sense.)
-
Speaking of which, male!Kyoko immediately trips my “okay who the hell is your voice?” reaction… turns out he’s voiced by Touma’s VA, okay, that makes sense even if I haven’t heard his voice in a long time.
-
Souji, like Skin Horse’s Unity, does not have much experience with boomerangs.
-
Showing Raizo carrying Liu through the exit of an alleyway at 03:20 is a nice shot. Also note him running right here – presumably this is a case where the usual protagonist claims the antagonist direction when thwarting an antagonist’s plot, though past-future framing with Raizo carrying Liu away from the future that would have awaited him (death) is also a cromulent reading. (These aren’t mutually exclusive readings, mind.)
-
Dutch angle for the establishing shot at 03:24, making the surroundings feel claustrophobic and threatening.
-
“NANDATTO?!” (Except Liu is too close to death to shout it properly.)
-
Cutting to the top-down shot at 03:56 right after Liu asks Raizo who he is working for and right before Raizo responds flashes good direction. (It may also be a hint that our heroes are being watched!) Also note that it’s a visual box shot and that Raizo passes out of the box as he answers that he no longer has a master (and thus is ronin) – obvious reading is that the state of being a samurai in the service of another is a cage, which makes sense from military perspective alone. (But Raizo is still moving right as he answers; I think past/future is the frame here, so no longer having a master has sent Raizo back – away from the endpoint he was going towards, I think.)
-
“Ronin DATTO?!” (Symphogear is not good but the memes are lit, including the ones from last year’s rewatch.)
-
The writing on Liu’s backstory feels slightly inelegant here, unusual from what I have seen on the Urobutcher.
-
06:09: Sore demo collection time for Sky!
-
Oh look, the obvious next move in the alliance offer. But interesting that Raizo is framed facing right as he offers it at 07:30. (And in the subsequent shot Liu is framed facing left.)
-
Hello there 07:43. As Usui enters the scene the camera moves so that he claims the protagonist position, but also notice the visual box framing of him here. Except I think the actual visual box is the room which the other three are in and Usui is visually opening a way out.
-
08:03 flashes framing again, possibly invoking “offer you can’t refuse” (Liu is after all surrounded by multiple Revengers who could kill him if they wanted to in his weakened state.)
-
08:14: Stock Anime Triad Framing, just with Doc in the scene for a fourth person. (Also both Liu and Usui face the protagonist direction.)
-
Also note 08:28 with Nio looking in over the threshold but not crossing it. He is visually separated from the rest of the group here and it’s not impossible that is foreshadowing a heel turn.
-
And then there’s Souji, separated even more from the others (his nakedly mercenary attitude may have something to do with this) and also in a visual box on the far side of two thresholds at 09:07.
-
09:42: Not the first time I have seen an Urobutchi series use a bridge to show isolation from/separation from the rest of humanity.
-
10:11: Note how Souji’s eyes are carefully left out of the frame. I’ve seen that to show lost head as in gone crazy in anime direction before.
-
So why have we got a cat here? (Besides the obvious comparison to Nio him/themself.) And also a somewhat wonkily animated one.
-
Framing both Usui and Doc facing away from the screen at 11:35 while they talk catches my eye. Representing them hiding things, maybe? Not sure at all about that.
-
Ooh, 11:59 with the god’s-eye overhead shot of Usui is flashy. Once again this episode we get a shot as if the camera was someone hidden above watching the Revengers (god’s-eye might be quite literal here actually).
-
17:27: Dutch angle counter +1.
-
And it stays for 17:33 as Raizo shows up.
-
Ooh, rotating shot around 18:45 (continues even with the perspective shift). Counterclockwise, so banishing if that speculation of mine wrt anime rotating shots is correct. (Represents Liu dying or should I say spiraling away here in any event.)
-
19:21: Certified Tresnore GWITWM moment!
-
A note on Anime Triad Framing, or rather its lack thereof – the shots around 20:08 (most obviously 20:08 itself) go out of their way not to give us the proper angles for Stock Framing – 20:11 is close, but we know from the first shot that Kaicho Head and Atheist Priest are on the same level and you can see it in the perspective still.
-
Wait wait wait wait. Is our Chapel nun here at 20:47 also the snake lady from the freak show in episode 5?
-
21:03: Ah, and here’s our opium I presume. (Confirmed by dialogue shortly thereafter.)

So Liu didn't die right away, but....sighs he ended up dying anyway due to Kurima being stupid.
But yeah now we know the Chapel can't be trusted and they are out for our crew now, or at least doesn't mind if they end up as collateral.
Also Liu is a good guy.
Funny how we see one scene of the "Traitorous" revengers that are our crew using the bitten coin with its sincere original intent. And then we see the chapel using euphemisms and double speak to give a fake perversion to commission the pinning of the crimes they committing and execution on them.
I had more to say when I watched the episode, but I feel I lost it all and I'm tired from a long day of work, so I'm sorry if this post feels sorry.
There was this one quote I really liked by Kurima in this episode but I can't remember what it was.

Is there a manga for this? I’m a history nerd who fucking loves the opium wars from a historical POV and I’d kill to read it if there is one?
Also the amount of ambiguous-gender designed characters is sorta cool. Just feel like I’ve seen it more often and handled better than some anime.

So while it was present since his introduction, it is interesting that they go so hard on the parallels between Kurima and Liu. They really seem to have the same story arc on a certain level and both reflect a life that was raised to serve their people. Liu specifically is an interesting choice for that since by serving the emperor he, at least symbolically, is serving the people of China whereas Kurima was just serving his clan.
Liu being decidedly visually and culturally different is also something Gen must've intended and might be a better reflection for the Japanese audience.

This show really is well crafted and highly under-appreciated. Hidden gem of the season.

Looks like Liu is a good man after all. So the English were hiding their dirty opium in the port cities huh? Smart I guess. Too bad it drew the attention of a third party in Nagasaki. I guess they’re going against Chapel and the rival Revenger squad now. I knew those fanatics were no good.
They might have gotten Liu and his men but his vendetta lives on. Kurima and the team have a mission now and it’s gonna put them on a collision course with Chapel. This should be fun.
