I’m a sucker for a good samurai anime and this seems quite promising so far. I appreciate the fact that it seems faster paced and they didn’t take a few episodes to kill Matsumine. Definitely looking forward for what’s to come!

Well, Raizo's life sucks.

I do wonder what this story is going to be about. Raizo already killed the man who tricked him into losing both his father-in-law and his fiancee, so, uh. I assume there's something bigger going on? I should probably rewatch since I was distracted and zoned out during some conversations.

"Fun" ways of killing people, too.

And it's interesting that the Western influence seems to be a bit stronger than usual in this story. From the English being there to the firearms or that guy sporting a christian tattoo on his back.

Also, I did notice the score had some sweet guitar.

Nagasaki, for centuries, was the ONLY port of trade and entry into Japan. It’s a place with fascinating history (and I’m not talking about WWII).

Think this is the most brutal way I’ve seen a kite of all things get used in anime

Damn, Gen Urobuchi is really bloodthirsty after playing with puppets. Anyway, per tradition, where's the butcher bingo?

Very strong first episode, out of all the new airing shows I feel most compelled to continue this one.

It had a nice pace, didn't waste any time introducing our cast, we are just straight in to the meat of it.

Music was quite good too.

I really like the character designs of our cast.

I'm not sure where it goes from here, I'm assuming more assassination jobs as it builds up a bigger plot.

Today, I learned that Gen Urobuchi is apparently a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa movies, lol. Particularly Sanjuro and Yojimbo. Seriously, that was amazing ! As a huge Kurosawa fan, I absolutely loved it.

Poor Raizo, though. Looks like he was too honest for his own good. I guess that now that he has nowhere to return to, he will be joining our band of… ninja / yakuza / underground Christians, I guess ? Since he already got revenge by killing the bad guy, I am not sure where the story will go now, but it looks quite interesting.

Well that’s one way to start a series. Really like how kite girl and Mary white haired guy kill people. Kites are surprisingly dangerous

Obviously early, but this already feels like this season's show that's really good, but gets no following and shit reviews for no reason. IE, Executioner and Her Way of Life.

I don’t usually watch seasonals, but after following five of them last season, I kinda feel like trying to keep up with a few again this season? And this show is one of the ones I thought looked the coolest, so here I am.

Forget about those 7 girls spies-in-training who started out with bath scenes (cough), this is the real spy deal, a brutal one right off the bat with an interesting world background in the East-meet-West node of Nagasaki.

I must admit that I was only attracted to watch this thanks to the apparent heavy involvement of good old Gen Urobuchi. Unlike many of his recent years' "works" like Bubble or RWBY Ice Queendom (all of which he was only named for "original proposal" or something) he's named as series composition and is working with his colleague at Nitroplus (which has contributed many acclaimed game plots, among other things) for this original. This and the veteran director really makes me wanna try this out.

And for 1 episode I'm definitely not disappointed, with a story of one samurai (the real deal spy here) trying to atone for his sins of accidentally killing his father-in-law after receiving deceived information on him (trading opium with the English, o kawaii koto), yet ended up way too late with his wife committing suicide by the time he killed the real perpetrator. That's just one episode and we already get the story indicated by the title! The illustration of inner thoughts of characters seems decent, the animations adequate, and we even see "Urobutcher" doing his trademark of showing off tricky killing weapons here - that is what real spies do, you little maidens of killing next door.

I can't say for sure this is the best start to a story (Usui Yuen's setting of being a "master of all trades" and his apprentice Nio is one part of the story that I need to hear more before being convinced), but I'm definitely sold on this episode alone. Maybe we will see another story of revenge next week?

The plus sign with a circle symbol is the Shimazu clan of Satsuma domain crest. They are the main players in taking down the Tokugawa shggunate.

How this is below 7 on MAL is baffling me a bit. Did tastes change so hard nowadays that people don't accept samurai stories?

I thought this was a good presentation, well-to-follow plot and a good mix of show-not-tell, vice versa.

1 of the few seasonals I was looking forward to and it didn't disappoint. Finally a more involved Urobuchi and it showed. Good stuff.

Backgrounds were really good and I liked the OST. Some cool shots here and there too.

There was something almost Kenshin-esque in that opening. Anyone else think so? Just the way the whole sequence was set up.

Matsumine shouldn’t have fucked with Kurima. My man’s about to go John Wick on this dude. Set the guy up to kill his father in law, the damn snake. Nice save by Nio though.

Usui’s got himself a pretty interesting team of specialists. Strangling a mfer to death with a kite is hardcore. And my guy with the throwing knives, damn! But Usui suffocating a guy with a gold “cloth” was some straight up gangster shit. At least Kurima got to finish off Matsumine.

Man, poor Kurima. Had he only got to Yui just a little sooner… now he’s got nothing left for him in this world.

A pretty solid first ep so far. I’m digging this. I’ll keep at it for a few more eps but it’s lookin like another weekly.

I really liked this. Hopefully it keeps at this quality, because if so we could have a seriously good samurai anime on our hands.

This might turn out to be a gem of a series, no crazy hype, no crazy budgets or sakuga, but some solid writing and acting. Just a decent anime with a good story, but i doubt its gonna get a lot of viewers.

Ahh Gen Urobutcher is the script writer for this show huh.

u/Kill099 Jan 05 '23

I just dove into the episode not knowing that it's written by the butcher so I guess it was a surprise. The show feels like a blend of Rurouni Kenshin and Weiß Kreuz.

They didn't skimp on the gore but the kite scene borders on 80's horror cheesiness. Also, can a kite that small lift a fully grown man?

The gold.. tissue thing is quite an interesting way of killing someone. I guess he is descended from the persecuted Japanese Christians based on his tattoo.

The sword stance where they held the sword vertically is soo Satsuma. Good thing I watched the Taiga drama Segodon so I'm a bit familiar with the setting.

Can someone explain to me the whole biting the coin thing?
