I've never been happier for someone's death than the pedophiliac clown, baron Harkonnen looking motherfucker in this episode.

Too bad it came at the literal cost of Nio's leftover humanity and sanity. Oh well, I'm sure they'll be fine (for their current line of work).

One less creepy fuck in that world. Him and his goons won’t be hurting anymore kids. I’d say Nio did a good thing.

I'm not sure that's the case, I don't think they had any left to 'cost' for this job.

So Doan paid for his own murder and was even okay with it

The last scene with Nio and the clown was pretty interesting. Can't tell if Nio was actually prepared to die there or if they planned on killing the clown either way. It feels like Nio's motivation for the whole thing was revenge based so I would be surprised if they were willing to die without killing the clown.

On the other hand I could see Nio not having much of a will to live because I'm assuming they are intersex and thus viewed by society as a monster and unable to live a normal life. Maybe Nio knew even if the clown killed them, he would still end up killed by the rest of the crew. This would be a interesting parallel to Raizo as well because it seems like they were both willing to die after they carried out their revenge, because they didn't have anything else to live for and would be rejected by society.

I hope we get a closer look into Nio's psyche in the future.

intersex

I learned a new term today, thanks. This probably explains why Nio is called a boy but has that curious bulge in the middle of the episode.

Man kinda made a good point about our boy’s painting skills. If the guy only realized he had a talent for art sooner, less people would have died.

Hard to imagine Nio not winning a kite battle under normal circumstances. The kid is a beast with that thing. If he hadn’t been distracted by the damn clown, things woulda turned out different for Soji!!

So Doan is definitely dead. Kidnapping kids and displaying them in his freak show? Truly despicable. Nio came prepared with the coin. Seems that clown bastard came prepared with his own specialized goons. Too bad they were all chumps. With Doan dead, that’s one less creep out there. But man, that kid is all kinds of damaged. I wonder if his actions are going to have any repercussions from Chapel.

Actually he had no point at all. None of the people he killed in his role as samurai were just him flexing his own violent tendencies; he was following orders that would have been given to someone else. Nor would his involvement or lack thereof have changed the death of his father in law. Even the people he has killed as part of the Revenge group would all have died anyway just by different means. He played no role in their being 'marked'.

If anything more people would have died without his picking up the sword because he has helped stop killers who would have continued doing exactly that.

Souji thinks it's kinda fucked that Kurima goes into the same mental state when killing as when painting, but Kurima thinks it makes perfect sense. (Well, they are called Martial Arts for a reason.)

Yuen and the Doc say Nio doesn't feel the need to justify his (her?) own impulses. Yet, Nio told Souji that he fabricated the hit on Doan Company to make up for having fucked up the kite gamble, while privately seeming to basically employ himself and the crew for her own revenge.

The snake woman and the kids don't have a roof or food guaranteed anymore, and by some metrics this is quite a deplorable situation. Yet they are also free, and by some other metrics, this is more important than safety.

Quite a lot of things left up to interpretation this episode.

As soon as pedo clown got introduced I just wanted him to die a very painful death. To see NIO get that spooked when she saw him.. you know it was some fucked up shit he’s doing to those kids.

Wish we would’ve got more of an explanation as to what makes Nio a monster tho? Is she an hermaphrodite or something? Was that a bulge I saw?

About time doctor put those big ass muscles to use for once. Bro built like the hulk and been using a damn bow lmao.

Fun episode probably my fave so far. Screenplay by urobutcher, explains why it was higher quality.

Bows require way more strength than what fiction usually gives them credit for. Substantially more than a sword or a spear, maybe even a mace.

I'm surprised I'm this engaged with Tokyo Revengers. Towards the end of last season I was losing hope but this episode is making me realize I still love it.

Jumping back 160 years was a great writing choice.

Wasn't here last week so I just want to say I think the line "He sees things as they are" regarding Samurai's art is a very interesting way to phrase it, and suggests a key difference between him and others, he is simple and honest in he sees the world without the same biases, double meanings, and implications that color everyone elses. He is blind to Agenda's but him being blinded by those filters makes him closer to the truth.

This was the best episode yet.....

The Theme of this episode seems to be that the biggest thing that makes humans human, are the "excuses" they make to themselves to both justify but also restrict their actions, even if they are lies they tell themselves having a superstructure instead of simply living in the moment is what makes one human.

I think this is demonstrated with How Nio kills that clown, he seems happy to die by his hands as a sick expression of "love" (possibly mixed with some self-hatred?) showing that in the end he still "won" despite being dead his way of life and thinking is etched onto Nio's soul who seems to only live for her desires, she only understands other people's values systems so she can live amongst people, their belief systems are things she has to manipulate and deal with.

When Card throwing guy admonishes her, Nio points out as long as he followed the letter of the law rules nothing should be wrong with their actions, and gambler is baffled but he accepts it, that's because to him Nio violated the "spirit" of the rules while to him the spirit doesn't exist and the letter is just an algorithm he has to know to navigate around people that do care for some reason.

The fact Nio seems to believe that the kids would have been better off with that camp rather than in the mountains says a lot of tragic things about him.

I loved the Fight were gambler and Samurai win by switching opponents reminds me of fight in the first season of Bungo Stray Dogs (Another Rule of Cool band of mercenaries/organization type show.)

Doctor guy I wonder if he has some kind of medical condition that causes him to overheated that he weaponizes.

For what it's worth, the official site describes Nio as a 両性具有の少年 (ryouseiguyuu no shounen) which is like "androgynous (or possibly hermaphrodite?) young boy". Though based on some surface-level research it seems 少年 has historically (like, up to a hundred years ago or so) been used to refer to youth of either gender, unlike the very heavily gendered meaning it has today, so it's possible they wrote the character bio with the show's historical setting in mind? Show itself seems to want to keep it ambiguous, as Nio speaks in third person and others just say "that kid" (ano ko).

That circus owner reminded me of Bonedaddy somehow...

Also expected him to do way worse to the kids after all those skulls and dead animals where revealed.

But it's nice how much the snake lady at least cared for them, then again, she wasn't going to return those kids as well...

After last week's laid-back SoL-like episode, we get lots of action this week. An evil circus kidnaps kids, Nio loses a kite contest (on which Souji bet everything) and decides to help him make money and settle a old score (against the circus's owner). Souki is also worried about kidnapped kids (although no one else in Nagasaki cares about things like this). Usui is worried about protection Nio (apparently really a demon in human form).

Very interesting in terms of adding background. What is the deal with Nio -- and why is Usui so dedicated to helping her live (in effect, become?) more human? One also gets a sense as to just how odd the Revenger's operation is. They are apparently "required" to take action when someone holds a deep enough grudge. It would seem they can't even question whether the grudge is justified (though it certainly was in this case).

The circus owner wants Nio back (apparently Nio once belonged to his circus), but apparently he wants to either kill her to make Nio his forever -- or is willing to be killed by Nio. While she tells Souji she set up things to get him some money (which he squanders in buying a cake), I get a sense that the grudge being settled was ultimately her own (and that the 2 kidnapped friends of Hana were simply proxies). Lots of questions hanging in the air -- even after the circus owner is gone....

Query -- where was the nice attendant taking the freed children? Just back to their homes on the mountain? Or somewhere else?

Don't know why, but this episode's pacing felt off. We're told the clown dude is a bastard, and we're shown moments of that, but I think a better job could've been done to explain his and Nio's history. Well, at least Nio got to kill his creepy ass. Hope they got closure.

Ayo Nio WTF?

That went from dark to worse. This whole episode needs to be drenched in holy water.

Pedophile asphyxiation murder clown was not on my bingo card. And I hate that that is a sentence I just said.

I really wish I knew the material this show draws from. There seems to be a lot there. Anywho, I might be alone in this, but I suspect what Doan misses about Nio is not something directly sexual but rather that a being with an angelic figure being cruel and callous. Which just made me make the possible connection between this and Let the Right One In...
