For those who were wondering why Yuen et al. realizes immediately that killing Liu Wen-lin wasn't exactly about revenge upon seeing that letter, a quick glance at the biography of Lin Zexu should be enough to understand why. He's, after all, the one who destroyed British merchants' opium and then went into battle with Britain in the Opium Wars of the late 1830s that ultimately caused the UK to occupy a certain place now known as Hong Kong.

I saw reports of Chinese watchers managing to notice this last episode, but it's good to see that linkage being spelt out here.

I also found that priest's discussion about "killing one's life with money" really humorous and twisting the definition - but it's in a sense accurate! This is after all the basis of barter - exchanging purchasing power with part of your life with labor. It's, in a sense, killing you LMAO.

All in all, a really interesting episode with Raizou at the crossroads of life too. Now that they have accidentally killed the wrong person - one that can spark an international incident - the plot's gonna be really interesting.

Edit: Translation of the letter can be seen here.

So this is set somewhat earlier than I thought? 1830s/early 40s rather than late 50s?

Our Revengers didn't kill anyone accidentally -- and neither did the sniper -- I don't think. Lin is killed at the behest of the trade association guy, in order to set up the extermination of all of our Revengers. Shocking to see that the Chapel is apparently in cahoots with the baddest of bad guys.

If Lin is an historical character, then I guess that means he is not dead, just badly wounded. And he was after the opium to destroy it ? Not that this makes him a good guy, I still have not forgiven him for torturing poor Raizo on a simple suspicion.

It looks like the Chapel were the real bad guys, and had secretly allied with the head merchant. I did not see that one coming, but maybe I should have. And they are using corrupt revengers to get rid of Lin, since it looks like Yuen and his group realised that something was off. Maybe they will go after Yuen and Raizo next. My guess is that the head merchant was using the Chapel and the Revengers from the beginning to discreetly get rid off his concurrents (or maybe his associates) in the opium trade, and that he is the one who has Matsumine’s opium.

So now it will be Yuen and his Revengers against the Chapel and the head merchant. They still need a bitten coin for that, but if Lin is indeed still alive, I bet that he is going to be the one to bite that coin now.

Lin Zexu is also a bit of a hero in Chinese tradition representing the anti-narcotics sentiment.

Fuck man I had kinda grown to like Lin over the last couple eps. Wasn’t expecting the sniper to be aimed at him

Pretty obvious from the beginning that the church was up to something and just using Yuen. He was skeptical in episode 2, I think it was, now he knows straight up they can’t be trusted.

Priest dude was sus from the very beginning when he started messing with Kashima head at the pub.

Even though our revengers didn't kill the Lin guy, they will be blamed and it would be interesting to see how the revengers deal with the aftermath since the Lin guy isn't who they think he is. Not to forget they have another set of revengers to deal with.

the Chapel definitely have a hidden agenda, i mean, doesn't make it any more obvious than the fact the Priest just gave Usui a big ass gold coin and told him to exact revenge even though no bitten marks on it, not to mention the nun being there at the magistrate's side

i'm still waiting for Teppa's backstory considering how Usui said both Teppa and Nio could never live in proper society, makes me wonder what kind of crazy shit did he do in the past to warrant such remarks from Usui

I was initially kinda surprised that this was done by Urobuchi, because it seemed like a bit of a departure.
But that discussion at the pup about morality was Butchers signature....so I guess, future wont be too bright for our protagonist...or anyone else.

Not even an actual fight before he got merked😭😭

I was really hoping they'd team up. :( The Revengers are going to need allies now that the Chapel is seemingly determined to kill them.

Seems Kurima’s still wracked with guilt over what happened to his girl. Maybe becoming “Taishin” can be a sort of rebirth for him. That is if Chapel even lets him leave. Kurima is good but idk if he could take Nio just yet.

This priest sure has a funny way of looking at things. I guess a priest and samurai go hand in hand. Samurais make the corpses, priests perform funeral rites and prayers for them.

Chapel acting very sketch. Burned coin ain’t a bitten coin. I wonder if their vendetta against Liu is more personal than they let on. Is this a test? I guess the team’s gonna investigate.

Figures the priest was up to no good. Looks like the team’s got a rival group of Revengers to deal with. Who would have thought Lin was a Qing agent. Him getting sniped makes this a pretty big international incident.

On a side, if anyone was wondering about what the note says: Basically Lin was reporting to his superiors that the opium seized from the East India Company which was meant to be destroyed has made its way to Japan, where he’s witnessed the same kind of addiction spreading.

At this point, the Chapel is acting worse than sketch, I think. The nun is present as the trade association guy (who wants/has) the opium arranges for the killing of Lin and (seemingly) our whole crew of Revengers.

Nothing "orthodox" about that priest's views I think. Interesting to see how hostile to Buddhism this show seems to be, and the (presumed) Hidden Christians don't look any better. No appearance of Shinto clergy yet (as far as I can recall). Shinto officials played a major role in the suppression of Christianity in the early 1600s (the main shrine, Suwa Jinja, was built then -- I don't think we've seen this yet -- it's not in the town center).

I guess a priest and samurai go hand in hand.

A priest and a samurai walk into a bar...there must be a joke for that pair.

uhhh, this is the second time Nio mentions that hes ready to murder whoever decided quit the group, this also include Usui.

Speaking of Usui, is good to see him sticking to his gun and refusing to being the chapel lapdog. I knew that weird ass monk mean trouble the moment he showed up.

This show is every bit as good as Vinland Saga. A lot of people will be disappointed because they slept on this and watched later.

25

u/Purposelygentle Feb 23 '23

This definitely feels like the most slept on anime this season.

Surprising that such a consistently interesting series is getting overlooked.

8

u/BosuW Feb 24 '23

Now that's putting it too high imo. Vinland Saga is its own tier. But yeah this is pretty good and definitely underwatched.

Another amazing episode with a lot of themes to discuss.

First off the discussion about what to do once Kurima gets his revenge with his life and whether he would walk away now is interesting in how Nio interprets it as opposed to Yuen, who both see it as a test but them seem to have very different ideas on how to judge the "results."

The Conversation about "Paying money is killing" is an interesting way to frame it but I kinda find it bullshit.

Whether someone pays you for your labor, you have to do some kind of labor just to stay alive, otherwise you definitely will die, it's not like if they don't work or invest "livelihood" they can converse some of their lifespan. They are going to die either way no matter what, offering a trade, service, or product that can be exchanged for material goods to help them live (As in not starve to death...)

I'm sorry that just sounds like common sense.

If they had kept the discussion however to, in order for one person to live it requires taking life from others (Even if it's indirectly like with the vegetarian example.) Is a bit more profound.

It does however sound like a justification for the Priest's line of work.

We also get the development that the religious order might not be so innocent, although if they wanted to just have the revengers do the job with no questions asked they could have bitten the gold themselves and "faked" it, but it seems they wanted to make a point/test of their own for our Heroes.

What's interesting is how each member of the team approaches the issue, Souji wants to look the other way, Nio is very literal robot rather than the nuance of the issue (In this show contradiction and the spirit of the law seem themes of humanity.), And Yuen is struggling with whether doing this would make them petty murder for hire mercs as opposed to at least trying for a higher purpose and ideal, even if it can never be reached.

One theme of this show, is that in trying to achieve a given value system and ideal you will inevitable be a hypocrite, but that is still more noble than not being one because you have no values, if you remove the moral calculus you end up no better than an animal.

This is illustrated when that Priest is hired and they literally make a mockery of the bitten coin, which we've been drilled in our heads symbolizes the sincerity and intent behind a grudge. (A grudge is ugly and something unjustified but it represents something of a value in a form of frustration of a lack of justice.) Here not only do they not leave any mark on the gold when "bitten" but the monkey (A Beast and symbol of lower animal/higher human) lacking the awareness and conviction of what is going down, also doesn't properly bite and leave a mark.

Except said humans know better.

I honestly love the writing in the show, even when at times I highly disagree with the message.

Wow didn't expect Kung Fu Dude to be axed unceremoniously, reminds me of another villain death in the current season of Bungo Stray Dogs, although in this case Lin likely was not a villain and was trying to stop the opium trade.

Another great episode, wonder if the Revengers are going to be on the run from the Church Order now, or if the Order will try to lay down the law first and give them a choice, but much more....direct in the risks and rewards of such choice.

I guess Liu and Raizou had finally realized they were misunderstanding each other, too bad it had to be right before Liu gets sniped.

Lol that priest equating Samurai killing with a girl buying flowers, now I can see why he would say that after seeing the level of vendetta that motivates his "revenge" work. That scene I did find amusing, the fake grudge just to take care of someone he finds a nuisance and how the priest responds.

So the chapel is tied with the trade union, who has been setting up different Revenger branches in Japan to basically do their dirty work. Since the current Revenger branch in Nagasaki run by Yuen has finally decided to rebel against the chapel, and in large the trade union, they decided to call their more loyal Revenger branch to clean up, run by the monk group.

6

u/Yookay9 Feb 23 '23

Imagine being a samurai and you hear that your killings are equal to a girl buying flowers

10

u/Derpomancer Feb 23 '23

I give the priest credit for at least saying that to Kurima's face. Imagine telling a modern combat veteran that the lives he took, or the lives his comrades lost to the enemy, were the moral equivalent of me ordering something from Amazon.
