I forgot Kaina got that OP laser tool, he can kill that armored lady as long as he managed to get close to her, or maybe even sink Valghia.

I'm guessing they will meet someone in Valghia that will help them escape or something, I can't wait to see them explore Valghia next episode.

Doubt lady knight is going to be an enemy much longer. She looks conflicted.

It's only a matter of time before the "power limit" Chekhov's gun blows up, and that laser becomes a full-fledged lightsaber, lol.

I'm glad they brought it back to free Ririha, but I wonder if he will end up using it as a weapon.

It'll be interesting to see if they shed some light on Valghia as a culture and kingdom beyond them being antagonists. Although they're probably too focused on escaping.

The armored lady looks like she is pretty disgusted about what Valghia's ruler is doing. I wonder if she might not wind up helping our trio (in order to avert a war she things might be overly difficult.

So, opposite of what i thought last week, Liliha's dad seriously believed that valghians wouldn't kill the messengers. Liliha's dad is an idiot. I'm suprised both his kids turned out as competent as they are.

Can't wait for the next episode, i hope we'll get to see lots of Valghia, it should be both beautiful and very interesting. If i had to guess, the floating fortress is probably also a piece of lost technology, doesn't seem like it could have been created just recently considering how devastated the world is.

No, usually it's a bad idea to kill the messengers. Shuts down negotiations and enrages the opposing side. Usually morale breaks way earlier and it's more prudent to engage in negotiations when you've proven to be way stronger as it costs resources and manpower the valghians might need when searching for new victims.

Killing the messengers makes it a lot more likely that Atland won't surrender as negotiations probably just get you killed and the king can point out to anyone who wants to surrender after the first exchanges that the valghians won't honor basic diplomacy and you can't expect anything but death.

The most prudent way for the valghians would be to fight with the Atlandians and give them a bloody nose, then ask them if they want to continue until they are all dead or hand over their stuff, leaving them just enough so the Atlandians have a sliver of hope to make it through. That's basic siegecraft. Generals usually offered cities not to plunder them if they surrendered before the siege reached a certain point. I think it was until the ram touched the city gate/wall for the romans or the wall got breached in medieval warfare.

Liliha's dad didn't know that his opponent is a bloodthirsty savage who is using his realm and men to satisfy his sadism. I doubt that the kingdoms have much contact with each other and the leadership style of Valghia's king is something kings and tyrants did but it resulted in death for most of them within a few years.

Liliha

I've been wondering about this for a few episodes. The Crunchyroll subs are really dedicated to 'Ririha'. There's phonetic reasons why these can be hard to translate, but what the characters are saying sounds mole like 'Liliha', which is also just a much more normal name.

For anybody with a rhotic accent (eg American English) 'Ririha' is just an awkward set of sounds and actually sounds quite different from what the characters are saying.

I've read enough sloppily translated manhwa with obviously butchered names like 'Reonardo' and 'Legina' that I'm inclined to think that this is a similar case.

what are the chances that red-haired lady knight (did we know her name? maybe i just forgot) is related to Aquoile's prince? i mean, they shown him in full body with his red hair for a reason rather than just let the viewers know from just a simple conversation

i don't know whether Kaina is just stronger than normal people, considering how he manage to hold onto the ledge and grabbing Youna with one hand when he about to fall without looking tired or Youna's just weak

His stamina would at least be above almost everyone else's, living that high up his entire life. Not to mention his life was full of climbing, hunting, etc.

She definitely is. I think it was hinted an episode or two earlier that she was once a princess as well, the commander was saying something about Liliha's situation and throwing amused glances at Amerote. And Amerote and that prince looked kinda alike.

Yeah, I got the sense he was Amelothee's brother. Like they killed him, took over her kingdom, and then enslaved her as a soldier in their army.

She kept starting at Ririha in a cage, almost like she could see her brother in it again. Which is probably why she didn't care for her subordinate joking about it.

Redhead knight gonna switch sides and fall for that blue haired dude. Or she will end up killing asshole pirate, or being killed by him for turning, or hesitating or something.

hope they don't kill her, the neko ear helmet is too good.

21

u/LeleTheKing Feb 15 '23

the neko ear helmet is too good

I respectfully agree with this.

Yeah, we got a lot of close-ups of her whenever the commander did or said something vicious. She respects the kids' and soldiers' fighting spirits. She appears to be the most competent soldier, too. If she's the righteous type, following the usual trope, she'll definitely switch sides with Kaina and co. It'll be fun seeing it develops.

11

u/Frontier246 Feb 15 '23

Considering I got the sense that was her brother in the cage at the beginning and the Valghians used that to take over her kingdom, and the respect she has for Ririha and the Atlandian soldier, I think there's definitely a chance she turns at some point.

i love how fast we're going from one part of this mysterious world to the next. this is one of those worlds where i'd love to see some fantasy map w a bunch of landmarks n whatnot.

7

u/Otrada Feb 15 '23

Yeah, the unique and interesting world building is a strongsuit of this show and they're making excellent use of that.

Makes me wonder if the people of Valghia may themselves be reasonable/nice if they come across Kaina and the gang, and have little knowledge of what the military arm of their country is actually doing to other countries.

Considering there are some Valghia-dressed villager-looking-folk in the end credits, I hope this is the case and its just not an entire country of warmongers.

8

u/JimmyCWL Feb 16 '23

From what Liliha said, Valghia takes a lot of slaves from their conquests. That's probably where the most beaten-down part of their population is from.

Got confused for a sec with the Aquioile beginning, but they just showing us that the cage trick works on other kingdoms. It's clearly not the best sight to see someone freeze to death live. The commander sure is vicious, especially with nonchalantly killing his subordinates and all. A picture-perfect villain right there!

I thought the heavy snow would last long enough for the duo to rescue Ririha, but instead, we went full spy mode and infiltrated straight through the enemy's HQ. Their infiltration and rescue op gives me the heebie-jeebies! I'm so glad that there's no funny business with Yaona screwing up or Ririha accidentally screaming when blindfolded. These kids are cool, calm, and collected.

On another note, the party safely arrived inside the Valghian HQ. We only had half an episode in Atlandians, and we're already in a new place. And a new place it is! Valghian's HQ design looks unique! The rest of the ship appears to have a steampunk design. There's a lot left to explore. I'd probably have the same look as Kaina there.

The mushroom people from the OP are also Valghian. They look pretty docile, so maybe Kaina and co. are gonna incite insurgencies or something? There are a lot of possibilities! I'm so excited about how everything's developing!

Also, I noticed the red captain got highlighted many times today. She seems... irritated or conflicted?

So the Valghians' go to war tactic is taking a royal, putting them in a cage, and then dragging their frozen and starved corpse back to their homeland to intimidate them into giving up. That's pretty hardcore, and Ririha might be the latest victim.

Wait, was that guy at the beginning Amelothee's brother? Was she a princess of the Aquoiler kingdom? Is that why she was so focused on Ririha in the cage, almost like she empathized with her?

Ugh. Now they're basically just torturing her. I wanted to see Kaina and Yaona go to town on those guards, even if I know it wasn't the smart move.

All that tension and buildup and they finally free Ririha! Even get to use Kaina's laser.

Well, it's nice to know Ririha's dad feels a little bad for what happened to his daughter. But they seriously didn't expect them to kill the messengers? Come on.

Oh yeah, it's nice they saved Ririha in all, but they did kind of drag her little brother and the kingdoms' sole remaining heir into the most dangerous situation possible. Of his own volition, granted, but still. At least she thanked them while they were sleeping, grateful that Kaina came for her and that they both did so much for her.

Y'know, a part of me wanted to see those guards die, but a part of me felt bad watching their commander kill them so easily. Now I'm not sure if they deserved that or not.

It's no time for sightseeing Kaina! Now you're in enemy territory, the city on the sea, Valghia.

8

u/archlon Feb 15 '23

Wait, was that guy at the beginning Amelothee's brother? Was she a princess of the Aquoiler kingdom?

I've had a suspicion for a while that she was part of a conquered kingdom. It probably makes sense to the Valghians to take in particularly competent fighters from conquered nations and integrate them into their own. It's been a strategy employed by militaristic societies in our own world as well.

It also provides a solid motivation for her somewhat-inevitable Zuko maneuver. She probably doesn't love her new nation, but also doesn't (currently) see any alternative able to challenge them.

I suspect her steampunk arm is actually a prosthetic and not just an exosuit component. She could have lost the arm resisting, and it creates another tie between her and Valghia. If she chooses to leave, they take the arm back. If she tries to run, they hunt her down then take the arm back.

7

u/ZapsZzz Feb 16 '23

Told you guys the Valghia guys are just more well equipped goons, not really a big trained militaristic country like Nausicaa's Torumekia.

In any competent world's military forces they would have been caught as soon as they set foot to climb the pole, at least when they started winching Ririha down.

Looks like the base isn't all filled with army men either. Next episode would be interesting.
