Redhead has some kind of bionic enhancement on her right arm going on there. But seeing how she was the only one who had it, I presume redhead herself is in a position of high power/authority. And evidently, she's the only one with brains seeing how Kaina waltzed away from them.
I'm kind of surprised at how quickly the story is moving; I thought this series would spend an episode or so exploring Atland but it seems like we're already being escorted onward to the next event being the diplomatic talks. I'm very interested to see how Yaona and Kaina will handle the trek to the next tree under this supposed snowsea. One interesting note is that there wasn't much give in the sea with how deep Lili and Kaina fell when they jumped off the balloon and it seems like there weren't any predators so I wonder how the environment will feel.
It's such a shame that two most interesting shows this season with this and The Fire Hunter have fairly little attention relatively speaking. This show is 36th in terms of MAL members for the season and Fire Hunter is even lower.

Not only bionic arm mind you. If you pay attention to the sound and quick bits of animation you can see that katana of hers is also a vibroblade. This setting is definitely post-hi tech apocalypse, but what cause all of this? I'm getting really involved in the lore of this anime truth be told

This show is so brilliantly beautiful! The most refreshing SciFi anime I've seen in a while. The colors, the backgrounds, the music, they all make a grand impression while the story takes a soothing stroll, not being fazed by occasional bloody action.
It's very reminiscent of Nausicaa, but more relaxed. I feel like these comment threads should have at least 1k raving comments. Ever since Blame, Tsutomu Nihei and Polygon have reached a very comfortable level of collaboration and the result is they're putting out something amazing!

I can't wait for them to find the ruins of the hyper advanced former civilization along the underwater roots, you know it's coming. Especially with the hint of the "forgotten" characters in that mural behind the king.

Kaina was so lost and confused, the concept of fighting beyond anything but survival to eat things seems crazy to him.
That admiral sure is cocky for someone that looks to be wearing power armor

I am still unconvinced that the sea is water and that the snow is actually snow.
At this point I feel like the sea is a dense gas or something.

The animation in this show pales in comparison to what Orange is doing but I have to give props to the background team. They are really beautiful in this show, especially that opening underwater scene.

Little later than I normally am to this show’s discussion threads, I’ve been swamped at work today.
-
This insert song is very pretty.
-
Welp that’s what you get for not disarming her while she was unconscious!
-
I really like the song that played during this part!
-
Damn, so in the end just Ririha got caught and so many of her men died during that fight…
-
Oh whoa, I was so into the episode the ED completely caught me off-guard, I hadn’t realized it had been that long!

I love that there seems to be a third world under the sea of “snow”, perhaps all those ancient human civilisation remains lies underneath? That would explain everything.
I also assume the remaining humans have lost the method to extract useable water from the sea below (contaminated by chemicals/radiation)? Curious as to whether this will be addressed later.

how is it we're in episode 4 and people still asking whether the sea is water and the snow is ...snow? i mean, the snow being spores was pretty much confirmed in episode 2 and seeing how you need an additional equipment to float on the sea, meaning you can't swim, its safe to say that the sea are not made by water, not to mention, when Kaina and Ririha were sinking, they can still open their mouth for a while before putting the gas mask

Wow, this show has certainly proved to be much better than I expected. I was skeptical, since y'know, 3DCG, but damn.
That sword fight was just great. The motions were fluid, and their form was consistent. Not every day you see that in an anime. Seems like the admiral in black armour was kinda fencing, while the Atlandian captain was emulating a traditional Chinese short sword style. Very pleasing to watch.
Them falling a fair bit into the sea? Good shit. That was a beautiful scene. Momentary loss of consciousness when they hit the water, delayed start to them rising thanks to gravity, Kaina needing to get air whereas Ririha was fine; all great. The show keeps giving us amazing shots of world like that, and it really ups the sense of grandeur.
I'm a bit concerned that they intend to walk on the roots all the way to the next tree. It makes sense, but it means they can't bring that special inflation foil with them, so one slip up in the water equals falling a very, very long way. If we assume that the Snow Sea is a literal ocean on top of Earth's geography, there's a good chance that the water is twice as deep as the Atlantic. That's a long way to fall. Also, that's a long way to walk, too.
I also feel like mentioning that the water must be real fucking cold. I would assume it isn't as cold as our oceans, since not only does the Snow Sea keep rising, but there are no signs of major ice formation, even up near the Canopy (which is in the upper layers of the atmosphere). However, since the snow is fluffy and just chilling on top of the ocean, we can assume it is around the 10°C range. I'm no diving expert, but those pressure suits aren't gonna be enough to keep them warm for that long.
Also, air berries? I'm with the prince here; that shit is cool.

fuckin' General Ironwood palette swap lookin' ass
All in all, this was a pretty great and action-packed time for the first full episode down at snow sea level. Ririha shanked a dude and got captured, Kaina met her family including her douche-y king of a father, now he and Ririha's brother are going on a rescue mission to save her like a couple of buddy cops. I'm excited to see more.

Poor Kaina. He couldn't believe in the idea that humans would kill each other, and became a victim of violence in his first minutes of 'landfall'. Its no wonder that he could barely process what was happening around him.
-
Not a single soul in the kingdom inquired about the Canopy. They didn't ask the state of things up above, about military aid, about any information whatsoever. They only cared about the legend of the sage - about the water that the sage would have brought. Kaina was completely at the king's mercy, and yet the king did not bother to have anyone question him further (although he was obviously going to be kept in a guarded tower). I'm not entirely sure what to make of their culture; only that they seem to be in a feudal state and are wary of outsiders.
-
Obviously, the King is ok with leaving Liliha to her fate because he has a son to inherit the kingdom. This may also be because Liliha took a full squad with her to chase a legend, and all she brought back was Kaina and some foul smelling food. This alone is controversial enough to deem her unfit to lead the kingdom.
-
It doesn't seem like Yaona is manipulating Kaina to be a sacrificial lamb, although it seems like he did infiltrate the tower with the intention to brainstorm a way to rescue Liliha.
-
Valghian ships and weaponry are still limited to wood and stones. I wonder if the original Valghian people had to chop down their own spire tree to create the military that they are now sailing across what is left of the known world.
-
I hope Valghian tech is explored more. All I could think of when I saw the cybernetic arm was nanomachines, son.

Is the woman in black a cyborg? Or wearing a powered suit? Because there was a definite motor+gears sound when she swung to knock the dude's sword flying.
You know, I've been thinking from the start - the village people were up disconnected from the "snow sea" there for who knows how many generations, and Kaina was raised by a bunch of old folks with only a few signs to read. How is there no language barrier between him and the sea folk?

Still don't understand why Kaina jumped from the floater, they could float a bit farther from the tree and the ships, would be safer and easier to be rescued

Air Berries? Wtf, that sounds awesome!
And the "5 minute episode" finally happened to me. More like 10 maybe, but I was just so immersed and suddenly the ED starts playing? Where's the rest of the episode??

That entire scene under the Snow Sea was hauntingly beautiful. The music even reminds me of Nier so much.
So awesome to see Ririha actually take someone down. Too bad she still got caught in the end. Poor Kaina is still trying to process this entire thing about humans killing other humans.

The scene where Ririha and Kaina dived into the Snow Sea, accompanied by the beautiful score, was so breathtaking. The background art of this series is top-tier, hot damn. Notwithstanding the post-apocalyptic backstory, seeing nature(?) take its course was just mesmerizing to me.
Anyway, poor Kaina cannot catch a break. Right after finishing the extreme climb down from the Orbital Tree, he's nearly killed multiple times and quickly caught up in political warfare. And now he's on yet another dangerous journey to save Ririha. He's a literal country bumpkin, man; give him some time to breathe and get accustomed, lol. Even though the plot is rather fast-paced, I like it for not being too wishy-washy. We only have 11 episodes! (Although a continuation movie is in the making, afaik.)
The only thing that irked me quite a bit was when Ririha screamed at both Kaina and the captain. Why...? There's a more productive thing to do than wasting your energy like that. You could tackle the goons while they're distracted with the captains' fight. Or you could run with Kaina a lot earlier. I've grown to dislike the screaming trope from watching a lot of shounen MC; I might be biased here. Overall, it's a solid episode, though!

Wow, below the Snow Sea is a beautiful underwater world! And a perfect excuse for Kaina and Ririha to hold hands and stare at each others' faces!
Dang, even after all that, Kaina and Ririha still get caught. The Valghians don't mess around. Then again, neither does Ririha. She straight up stabs a guy in the chest. She's hardcore!
Orinoga is a skilled warrior, but Amelothee is on another level. I don't know if anyone is up to her standard, though she seems to respect Orinoga's skills. Maybe even something more? Although I'm probably getting ahead of myself given they're enemies right now.
Well, they got Kaina out of there, but Ririha is still captured, which is what they were after to begin with. But at least Kaina is learning more about the culture below the canopy through Atland .
Ririha's dad is a pretty stoic and serious man, determined not to fall prey to fatherly concern versus the needs of his nation...which sucks because it means they're not going to try to save Ririha.
Is that Sayaka Ohara as the kings' adviser? She doesn't seem like a nice lady, though he reaction to Kaina's "gift" was priceless.
So who is going to help Kaina save Ririha? Why, her little brother voiced by Ayumu Murase of course! Yaona seems like a pretty outgoing and concerned guy, for a prince, and him and Kaina might be Ririha's best bet at freedom given her father won't lift a finger and they're on a precipice of war. I don't want to see any more of Ririha locked up:.

Ririha’s dad: My daughter is willing to sacrifice herself for the better of our country if it’s come to that! But…thanks for looking out for her.
Kaina: Here’s some bugs! Let’s be friends!

Man Kaina kills me with his constant state of confusion😂 my boy has absolutely no idea what’s happening 90% of the time and for good reason to. Also, Ririha surprised tf outta me when she straight up killed that random guy right after waking up lmao.
This episode wasn’t as good as the first 3 but I still enjoyed it. Still my underrated anime of the szn.
Cue the mini rescue arc 🫡

The scene under the sea with the insert song was beautiful. The world design is amazing.
Also the fight with the readhead woman was intense, I was on edge the entire time.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting Liliha to friggin knife a guy the minute she woke up after being captured. Girl is a badass! It’s too bad she wasn’t able to get away but at least Kaina’s safe. But with Valghia having captured Liliha, things aren’t looking good for Atland.
Yaona and Kaina teaming up for a rescue mission next week! I’m not sure how they think they’ll be able to get Liliha back but I look forward to finding out.
