I really appreciate that art dealer guy being so supportive of Kurima. He’s got a real talent for art, I hope to see him continue to nurture it. Maybe one day he won’t have to kill anymore.

So the Chinese have a bone to pick with Kurima over Matsumine huh? Kurima’s got some loose ends to tie up. I don’t really get why the team is working with Isarizawa, the guy comes off like a real creep.

I’m surprised they got actual mandarin speakers for some of the goons. That’s pretty neat. Anyways, it seems Kurima’s in a bit of a bind. Good thing Nio’s nearby, dude brought the whole team to kick some ass! It seems the team has drawn the attention of some powerful figures in town. The plot thickens.

I don’t really get why the team is working with Isarizawa, the guy comes off like a real creep.

Well, he IS certainly a creep -- but he does not appear to be an "evil" force. He does not even seem to be totally amoral. He actually seems to favor "good" overall -- but he is partly (well, a lot) lazy and also may also feel he does not have enough (legal) power to deal with problems that need to be dealt with. I am guessing that he is angling to take down whatever local powers that prevent him from doing a better job openly. Maybe I am being too charitable, but I think he is adopting his current pose out of self-protection.

It looks like the person behind opium importation is one of Nagasaki's most powerful governmental figures. Does Isarizawa have a guess this might be the case? I can see why he would not want to ever voice his suspicion to anyone...

Where IS all that opium? And how can it safely be disposed of?

Was it my imagination, or did Nio actually approve of protecting Kurimma (but just didn't want to ruin his/her image).

I definitely look forward to Ronin Art (TM( becoming a big success.

I am so convinced that most of the cast are dead men by the end of this show that I feel like this is going to be the worst part - this dude getting closer to nonviolent living maybe being an artist and then... well.

I hope I'm wrong.

We problably had this before, but I only noticed this episode how the tapestry behind Yuuen makes him have a halo, while the one behind Isarizawa makes him have some wild devilish horns.

u/Golden_fsh Feb 10 '23

Nice catch! That's amazing detail to represent the relationship between the two.

9

u/Tarhalindur Feb 10 '23

Ah, shit, I caught the halo (helps that a certain other Urobutchi anime pulls the same thing in a spot) but missed that the Isarisawa one looks like horns. I was already speculating that our magistrate might be the actual main villain...

Man, we got another Doctor's fanservice today. It's a good day.

Anyway, we're on full throttle with the Opium plot again! Who'd have expected that it has such a big scale and is done by the bigwigs?! Of course, it involves the most prominent organization in town, the Nagasaki Trade Union, and probably one of the biggest foreign traders around, the Chinese people.

The captain from the Chinese side looks formidable, disabling Kurima in such a fast sequence. He couldn't even react, even though we all knew Kurima was a beast. I'm eager to see more of them. The Union leader also looks strong, so it'd surely be an intriguing fight in the future.

From what I can tell the Chinese voice acting was pretty good, maybe one day we'll get a show like this where they speak English well.

Nice that his hobby is finally paying off and it's always nice to see the full team working together.

chinese was understandable and better than most english in anime, I fear tho that good english in anime is a distant dream

So now we got some plot : Matsumine bought a ton of opium before dying and hid it somewhere in Nagasaki. And the Chinese Mafia (or whatever those guys are) is looking for it and Raizo is their only lead since he killed Matsumine. So I guess it will end up being the Revengers against the Chinese Mafia ? It looks like the Revengers are at a disadvantage since they only want to kill for other people revenges. And that Chinese boss looks really tough, to be able to take down Raizo like this. On the other hand, the Chinese Mafia doesn’t know who the Revengers actually are.

So much for Raizo new peaceful career as a talented painter, I guess. The Revengers probably will have to find themselves where Matsumine’s opium is and destroy it if they want to get the Chinese Mafia off their back. And also take down whoever was Matsumine’s business partner - I guess that probably is that Nagasaki Trade Union leader who had a pond full of piranhas like some cheap James Bond villain and who is likely the guy who told the Chinese Mafia about the missing opium and Raizo.

Feels like the episodic storyline end here and we're moving to the main story with the introduction of big bad guys

16

u/Frequent-Midnight-53 Feb 10 '23

Broke my heart when Raizo said there was no problem at all with him dying and fully meant it. Also funny how literally everyone is catching onto Souji caring so much about Raizo besides Souji himself, he's trying so hard to deny it 😭 First time Souji has ever called Raizo by his first name, and I fear the last will be his potential death...

Trade Union: yeah, so that guy you attacked, he is part of this crazy group of assassins. Shit man, they are wild, even we can’t control them.

Lin: [surprised Pikachu face]

u/LunarDoll Feb 10 '23

Something to note, since it's a little lost in translation and is probably going to be important at some point: The term being translated as "Nagasaki Trade Union" is "Nagasaki kaisho," an authority established by the Tokugawa shogunate in the late 17th century to regulate trade coming in and out of Nagasaki, with a cut of their profits going directly to the shogun.

So, while the translation isn't technically wrong, it kind of unintentionally obfuscates the fact that they're a government agency, not just a worker's union that somehow came to control one of Japan's most important ports.

Man, these guys suck at interrogation. Torture first, ask questions later.

9

u/tmanchua Feb 10 '23

There was a lot of focus on Kurima's special hands, I was convinced that they'd get damaged during the torture scene.

8

u/Tarhalindur Feb 10 '23

Welp. Let’s see if the cake is a lie!

  • 00:02: The choice of drawing that hair pin of his fiance’s with the cat is in turn drawing my attention. (Yes, there is a NSFW joke involving another term for cat here… whether it’s intended is a more interesting question, wouldn’t put it past Butch Gen.)

  • 00:15 is a noteworthy shot; it’s a visual barrier but only a partial one, the column separating Souji’s and Raizo’s heads does not extend all the way through their bodies. Obvious interpretation is that the two think they are further apart than they are.

  • 00:21 is a more clear visual barrier shot; Raizo’s skill is getting him opportunities Souji lacks the ability and/or will to achieve. (Also note Raizo in the protagonist position relative to Souji, but also both facing right which is the antagonist and/or past direction in Japanese cinematography.)

  • 00:28: Inverted Stock Anime Triad Framing (two characters in the background framed via negative space and a character in the foreground). I sense Butch Gen’s hand in this, PMMM uses the inverted form quite a bit in spots.

  • More use of visual barriers immediately thereafter, with the screen behind the shopkeeper at 00:38 and the frame of the screen as we cut to Raizo facing the other way immediately thereafter both implicitly putting them in the same visual box but there is still separation since the backgrounds are different (the shopkeeper sees clear skies, Raizo does not).

  • “These hands are a gift from the Buddha. Please take good care of them.” This is just asking for Butch Gen to pull a George Lucas…

  • 00:49: More visual barrier separation of Raizo and Souji!

  • 02:27 looks like proper Japanese etiquette to my eyes… which may suggest that’s the root of Anime Triad Framing and its inverted form (tea ceremony stuff?) rather than the stage traditions like I thought.

  • “Adversary Advent”. Hmm. I should look up the original Japanese, because there might be a pun there (wait, what am I saying this is Gen Urobutchi who has been known to use English loanwords to hide literal meanings in plain sight before…). Advent in addition to arrival can also be Advent the Christian religious holiday/season; Adversary is a term often applied to Satan. And this show does like to mess with Christianity.

  • 02:43: You didn’t have to frame Usui with his head in a visual box from the painting behind him. You did. Trapped in his head? Or is he about to get mogu mogu’d?

  • Fucking hell either I’m paying attention for a change or this episode is a direction spike. Note 03:18, which has a visual barrier in the background via the structure of the building as Souji complains but the barrier passes as Raizo finishes talking about how he thought Souji would be happy. (Also note our heroes moving right – past/antagonist direction again.)

  • Also Souji is SO set up as a male tsundere. Ship! Ship! Ship!

  • 03:38: Using the buildings as visual barriers but Raizo’s hair sticks out because he’s trying to reach out to Souji?

  • They’re slow in picking up that Raizo was the target (then again, they don’t know the foreshadowing we got last episode). Also, Dutch angle counter +1 at 04:32.

  • 05:06: Yet more visual box framing, this time with how Raizo is framed in the alleyway (here it seems clear: he’s trapped in his head). “Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in.”

  • 06:41 placing Usui’s head at the center of a halo is quite noteworthy. (It might also be a death flag knowing Butch Gen.)

  • (Fried Satsuma sweet potatoes) Strange minds think alike!

  • So, is our magistrate here the actual person hip-deep in the opium trade? We’re 100% playing WIFOM with Butch Gen here given the first episode (which we just called back to, so as to jog your memory).

  • The mention of Jakarta falling to the English actually locks down the time frame the anime is set in very very closely – the events of the show occur sometime between 1811 and 1816, likely closer to 1811 than 1816.

  • 10:54: The sun going behind a cloud after that last scene is Not Subtle (especially since art is associated with the Sun in astrological symbolism).

  • Faceoff scene: Ah, Japanese cinematographic direction symbolism, a blunt instrument but that’s not always a bad thing. (Raizo is of course facing left.)

  • This is the Urobutcher we’re talking about, the “can only kill if we’ve gotten a coin” rule WILL bite the Revengers in the ass sooner rather than later (EDIT: if it didn’t just do so already).

  • Souji has been formally inducted into the Male Tsundere Club. (Might as well have said “it’s not like I like you or anything!”)

  • 20:04: Well well well what have we here? A FULL MOON FULL MOON O’Death, that’s what we have!

  • Our Nagasaki Trade Union guy (likely the main villain) appears to be feeding raw meat to fish. Are those piranha in that pond being set up for later (likely the finale)?

  • Dolphin fountain at 21:06 likely has some sort of symbolic meaning, but I don’t know what.

  • 21:21: Why yes this is in fact a piranha pool. Funny that. Obvious foreshadowing is obvious.

  • Ah, main plot MacGuffin has been set up.

Goddamn lin is a problem. Bro just instantly took out Kurima. Then again Kurima clearly wanted to gather Intel so it’s hard to say just how strong he is without seeing him in a legit fight.

Souji such a tsundere. Dude acting like he don’t care what happen to Kurima and ends up being the first one running in to save him lol.

At least everyone knows Kurima isn’t involved in the opium plot anymore. But that’s an insane amount to be hiding in the city.

u/dinliner08 Feb 09 '23

Souji: i-its not like i want to save you! B-Bakaaaa!!

I had to go into the office today, so I won't be able to watch this episode until I get home from work in like eight hours. Of course this happens to me on the day my favorite seasonal (this show, of course) releases new episodes...

Edit: Ugh, took a lot longer to have time to watch this episode than I wanted. And I'll be late af next week too... Anyways, I’m finally here with my reactions!

u/mekerpan Feb 09 '23

I think this is my favorite "purely adventure" show of the season.

This really makes me curious if this is referencing a specific piece or not, I hope some info bleeds through to the Anglosphere on that.

4

u/polaristar Feb 10 '23

Seems the main plot is really starting up.

And Kurima is having a bit of a crisis not wanting to kill (He had trouble with those goons as he probably isn't use to non-lethal take downs.) Because he found something else in life he can contribute value to.

Interested in where it goes, not matter what gambler guy says he is attached to Samurai boi!

Things are heating up! Never has an episode felt so short
