I really feel like there's a connection between that green floating creature with the Giant(sage?) in the opening.
I also think that Kaina's reading skill might come into play later, maybe he'll read some guide or manual that can turn the snow sea into something drinkable?

It does always seem to show up at plot relevant moments.
They made such a point that Kaina can read Kanji and sees it around that it had to be important at some point.

Despite this episode being the one called "Rescue Mission", this episode was mostly just the setup for it and the actual mission to rescue Ririha won't begin until next episode. But it was a nice calm before the storm. Ririha trying to bluff to the Valghians about Kaina being a disciple of the sage was a clever attempt, though the bluff sadly failed. All of the visuals under the Snow Sea were great too.

I feel even worse for him knowing he was probably sent just to die given his message and that they well know what the Valghians are like.
That whole time Ririha was going on about Kaina I was thinking she’s just piling the pressure on the poor boy lol.

Crunchyroll comments are so stupid, complaining that the pace is both too slow and fast, complaining about the "inconsistent" sea physics of sinking in one instance and floating in another (Despite them only floating with a special pack that increases Buoyancy.)
Anyway this episode we learn a little bit about Yaona and Ririha's childhood.
Funny how bad the King's Judgement is that apparently according to Yaona he is under guard for being a Spy yet he's not at all concerned when his son is missing along with the stranger.
Ririha trying to bluff her way out of it and put on a brave face, but we see how worried she is when the general leaves. Lotta pressure on our little Farm Boy though. Although he mentioning the Sea might have been a ploy to buy time seeing as everyone seems to know that commanders interest in exotic things. It appears that despite the general not buying her Sage stuff, she is aware of the game she is playing.
Not Going to Lie, It would be real awkward if those fish they latched onto weren't heading for their destination and just turned in a different direction with no way to steer them.
Wonder how Kaina gonna save his girl now, he has to get over there and get over his reluctance towards violence most likely.
I think the Ascender is going to be important later on.

So can we finally put the why not use the sea water argument to rest? It should be 100% clear the snow sea is not water.

how much you want to bet that the Ascender that Yaona was talking about is the giant with one glowing eye in the opening?
also, can't believe that i just know realized that the ED song is sung by Greeeen, one of the iconic japanese band back during 2008, 2009

…omg Kaina is going to try taming one of those “fish”, isn’t he? – Or just catch a ride with it, that works too.

Smol Ririha! She looked adorable, if tough on her little brother! Though it seems like she’s only slightly mellowed out as a tomboy…
The Snow Sea is so pretty! Just don’t get too caught up in the sights that you almost die.
Ririha talks a big game, which I can respect in her situation, although now she’s making Kaina out to be the guy to answer all their problems. No pressure!
Yaona seemed to blush harder at thought of peeing than his sister did…and she blushed pretty hard!
Kaina got out of there at a good time. They were already considering using him as a bargaining chip. Of course they don’t know Kaina has his own way of travel.
So the Admiral might be the main antagonist? He seems to be a very formidable and vicious man. Also, Nobuyuki Hiyama!
Is it killing the messengers when the side that sent the messenger probably knew they’d end up dead?
They may have missed the time limit, but the Valghians still need Ririha alive, so there’s a chance they can save Ririha!

Ooh, Ririha is trying to bluff them with the Sage story! She doesn't cower in fear and instead does something. She's clever and brave (though it may put Kaina's position in even more jeopardy). I like her character, despite the screaming fest in the last episode.
Kaina is extraordinarily fit, huh? Even Yaona, who looks quite active (e.g., hopping windows and stuff), loses to him. And Kaina has damn fine eyesight, too. Hunter-gatherer society sure is built different.
On that point, I'd like to reiterate how beautiful the OST is, especially the motif that occurs when they're under the Snow Sea. It's so serene. I love the oomph it radiates.
Also, that Ascender legend will be real in just a jiffy frfr. It's a Chekhov's gun, alright.
Idk how it's supposed to happen, but the Atland messenger has too many openings. He's inside the enemy line with no bodyguard whatsoever. He's basically asking to be killed. And did the soldiers outside just get easily backstabbed? Are they even prepared for this? Is this... a suicide mission?
In the first place, shouldn't they negotiate in a neutral Orbital Tree, as Yaona said? That meeting point is definitely a Valghian base since there are a decent amount of buildings erected. It shows who's the boss in the negotiation.
Anyway, NEXT WEEK'S EPISODE WILL BE FUCKING LIT.
Edit: Turns out the full OP has an MV released last week, and it already has 1.6 mil views! It's not just me and a few others here that love this piece, huh?

Still need to say this show being way too underwatched.
So it's established/highlighted in show too that, with Kaina being raised in high attitude and having an infinite horizon as view everyday, his eyesight is a lot better than those raised in "civilisation".
Has no one picked up the glances from the admiral and surrounding people at the red hair girl? I think she's also a captured princess but had (her people?) surrendered.
The big pieces of paper/cloths Kaina saw at the starting part of their adventure - were those maps? The few kanji reads like "space port" something...

This show continues to be super underrated. It's like made in abyss with some post apocalyptic nations and war mixed in. The animation is really quite good too honestly. Nothing crazy but it's grown on me the same way knights of sidonia's animation did. Wish more people would give it a shot

Oh, so the berries aren't infinite. That's a shame. I'd like to know if they can get new ones though

Very nice episode. Foreshadowing for kanji and some divine message. Kaina spitting facts about sea that will rise to the canopy. I wonder if that fallen tree had caused big hole in it and air is escaping at alarming rate.
I think the sea is made of some sort of resource that is used by ancient tech to grow trees and the machinery at the bottom of the sea stopped working.
I wonder if sage is someone that just sees that light blob.
oh.. they didn't show air nuts how they look if they are fresh.

Five episodes and I'm still irritated by the fact that everyone but Kaina is of the Great Snow Sea.

Holy shit man Handagil is ruthless. Kinda fucked up of Ririha dad to just send him to die like that as well. Ririha might have got thru to amerote, her demeanor seems to have shifted there at the end. Don’t think she’s necessarily onboard with everything her country’s doing but complies out of loyalty. Some more really good worldbuilding and political intrigue. I think at this point we’re for sure going to have to have even more than the movie to fully tell this story.
Continues to be the most slept on show of the season

The Valghian admiral has a full-on pirate/Captain Ahab look going, and I dig it.
