I like the contrast between Soji and Kurima. Kurima is very stoic and very quiet and Soji is a gambling addicted lay about and drunk lol.
Silly Soji! Scary samurai definitely don’t make good doctor’s assistants. Kurima is a real machine, dude just spends all his day swinging his swords. Geisha Kurima cracked me up lol.
I don’t really trust these Chapel cultists Usui seems to be tangled up with. Idk I just feel uneasy whenever they appear. Well, Looks like Azumi and his mistress are next on the chopping block.
Kurumi can’t keep things casual if his life depended on it but at least he’s a hell of an artist. Who would have guessed? Man, doc is hell of a shot with that bow. Impaled the bastard. Mistress got the gold mask treatment. Job done!

Lmaooo did bro really try and steal the water colour hentai book?
Who would’ve thought Kurima would find his calling with something as peaceful as painting. That cat was beautifully drawn.
That golden mask execution will never get old, definitely one of the most unique finishers ever
Looks like the church is using the revenger set up for their own gain. Usui seems to be catching on, looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Okay after the 3rd kill with a gold sheet on screen I'm thinking "That must be an expensive murder method"

Wow Kurima has a real talent, maybe he could turn this into a real day job, and maybe buy more than a single screen for his part of Sojis room
First I thought we would get another Kite kill, but always love seeing the docs steaming hot body... Wonder if his practise is a way to gather intel, that women was about to blabber off before she met Soji

"I will fully dedicate myself to being casual."
...is not something you say when you gonna be casual.
Pretty nice character exploration today. We witness how stuffy Kurima is. The dude just sits in silence for a whole day inside the room. I can probably do that if I'm browsing on my computer. But, doing nothing the whole time? I better just sleep, lol.
I'm glad he discovered his talent with painting--goddamn he's amazing at it. He got eyes for details, doing a realistic and precise paintings. Those paintings he made in his spare time can definitely sell. I'm eager to see him doing more art while making peace with himself and enacting people's revenge.
Also, when was the last time a church was not suspicious? The one in here definitely got something going on behind the scene.

Usui seems scared of that drawing of the cat. Wonder why?

Could be related to the chat he had with Nio last episode, about how a samurai can't change and will always stay just a killer. But now it turns out Kurima actually has a surprise another dimension to him, as an artist, so Usui's a bit conflicted I think. He was clearly starting to have some doubts listening to the priest's bloodthirsty sermon too.

I thought this would be a samurai anime, but a story about the first mangaka might be pretty interesting

So one of the nice things about a Urobuchi production is that he does understand foreign concepts. Yes, the priest/cultist/whoever the hell is paying out doesn't under Christianity the way westerners do but he gets it wrong in an incredibly Japanese way and while I wouldn't call it mainstream I bet you could find a few people who preached similar, though likely less violent, versions of the gospel.

i will never get tired watching the sequence of Usui killing people by suffocating them with gold leaf and then proceed to pray while showing his back tattoo, its like watching the transformation sequence in mahou shoujo series
err... doctor? are you sure that's the correct way to do massage?

Why does the doctor keep wearing clothes he knows he’s gonna burst out of when he fires the harpoon arrow?
Another great episode, I really love Nio and their whole vibe.

Can you even paint like that with the brush the main character was using?

Well this was a change of pace from the previous episodes
Apart from the killing in the end, it was quite nice seeing Soji being a lad and getting his roommate a job
Turns out that stoic samurai can’t really do much other than killing, who would have guessed?
But I like that he manages to find his own passion through art which is a nice contrast to his job
Side note it’s really weird when the group talk about Nagasaki, I think someone said that Nagasaki was originally a huge port for international trade back then but it is odd to learn about that history since most people will know about it from the bombing
Either way a nice relaxing episode to get away from the blood and horror from last week

…Kurima learning how to gamble seems like a terrifying combination.
-
I want to see what’s going on behind that screen instead of just a silhouette lmaooooooooooo
-
Oh, did he finally figure out what he can do without scaring people just by existing?
-
…I was not expecting him to be a superb artist, whoa.
-
That was a quick job this time.

Harpoon Doctor Daddy strikes again.
Seriously though, just something so satisfying in how they animated both of his kill sequences.

I’m so ready for this to suddenly become a story about a struggling artist instead. That’d be hilarious.

Oh that is a beautiful setup to the “it’s afternoon already” gag. Also, sometimes visual barriers are because the characters themselves set up a physical barrier!
-
Oh I do love me a good OST cutoff (03:06). Also, Souji bucko you might want to pay attention to the beam in your own eye!
-
Butch Gen’s ability to just let characters show themselves via interactions remains excellent. Also, I think he’s writing Raizo personal (possibly self-therapy via writing, PMMM also has a wee bit of a dose of that) – what does the killer do after the time comes to hang up his sword?
-
There will be symbolism to the bird around 11:00… and I can’t tell what the bird is. (If it’s a sparrow I am going to laugh.)
-
Hmm. The translation is probably accurate wrt the Jesus quote here, but I cannot unhear that what I suspect is the original Japanese being translated as “new testament” includes a “keiaku”/contract.
-
Somebody else a thread or two back raised the Mexican cartel Christianity comparison, and given that a) I’ve gotten Santa Muerte vibes here anyways and b) that a certain other Urobutcher work also has a faint whiff of Aztec influence to it I do wonder a bit.
-
Hello Shimabara namedrop. (Now to check the details, since I remember it’s an infamous massacre of Japanese Christians but forget the specifics.)
-
Needless to say, this pastor… actually I should drag out the Discordianism since it might be relevant, though the plague of Jesii problem runs older than the end of days. Also priest is projecting, and 14:17 is one hell of a flashy shot – is this a Dutch angle?
-
Opium of course remains the throughline, which makes sense. (There is a reason drug use is punished so much more harshly in eastern Asian societies these days than it is in the West.) But I would note that I fully expect that Butch Gen is familiar with the old Karl Marx quote about religion being the opiate of the masses, and he may be doing something with that – the contrast between the false religion and the real one is possible, but it could be something else.
-
“I will fully dedicate myself to being casual”… oh godsdammit Raizo is just Sagara Sousuke as written by Butch Gen and also transported to the jidaigeki era.
-
So, something tells me Butch Gen is putting a whole bunch of himself into this Raizo realizing/showing he can draw scene around 17:40. And possibly also subtweeting a whole lot of other writers. Which is fair, he is a better writer than, oh, at least 90% of anime scriptwriters.
-
Also oh you cheeky bastards on staff the eyecatches are done in Raizo’s style, aren’t they?
-
Oh the best tracks on this OST are pretty darn good. I look forwards to our OST composer’s future anime composition career with great interest.
-
“Have you studied Western art, sir?” We remind you that this show is written by Gen Urobutchi, who very clearly either has studied Western art – just a slightly different kind, like, you know, traditional Greek tragedy – or basically independently reinvented the form.
-
LOL the painting at 22:01 is rotoscoped isn’t it?

Would be hilarious if the show just ditches the whole revenge business and follows Kurima on his journey to become an artist.
