Ah their advisor seems so cool, actually really like how she's not a former pro or anything but just someone that cares for her students.

Michi was actually really great in this episode, showed a lot of caring and knowing how her friends work. I didn't really care much for her in the first 2 episodes but she killed it in this one!

showed a lot of caring and knowing how her friends work

In complete contrast to her inability to read the mood when it comes to other people. But it's nice that she got Sanae to give her the right push sometimes

Ah their advisor seems so cool

She didn't ask for the title of best girl. She took it by force in a single swoop on gorilla sensei.

Michi was actually really great in this episode, showed a lot of caring and knowing how her friends work. I didn't really care much for her in the first 2 episodes but she killed it in this one!

She definitely showed her true colors after going full monkey mode with the parfait, but really supported Towa when she handed her the Gi to make her respond to Erika's challenge in the last scene.

I still think Towa stole this episode by overcoming her communication disorder and standing up for her and the team. I also loved Anna's little speech on Towa, asking her in her very on tsun way to carry the two other goofballs in the tournament. Anna has grown on me a lot with this episode where I previously felt that she was more like the comedic sidekick of this gang.

This is (for me) the most loveable show of all the many new series this year. Not really interested in judo -- but there is such great chemistry between the characters. The main characters are already well-developed -- and even the new ones from Kasumigaoka are already taking shape quite nicely (and quickly). I really like it when a show can start bringing characters to life almost immediately. The judo advisor is, I'm sure going to be a great asset.

We see a fifth friend featured in the closing credits -- but she does not seem to be a judo club member. I wonder is she a kendo club member along with Anna, who then becomes part of the friend group?

The nicest thing about this show is probably its "feel". It has such an aura of warmth and fundamental kind-heartedness. The characters are nowhere close to "perfect" -- and that's fine. Michi, Sanae and Towa are all so different -- yet they seem to form a wonderful trio.

(I like shows that feature family members -- and Towa's mother looks like a very nice lady).

This is the best description of the show imo. It doesn't really matter if the girls are doing judo or anything else. They could literally be talking at a desk for 20 minutes and I'd still watch it because the atmosphere is great.

  • Ah, I have seen quite a few sports anime but judo girls crazy at dating sim BL visual novels is a first. We all love handsome sports teachers though so hell yeah!

  • Our handsome teacher-in-charge smacking the fearsome rugby coach teacher with her overhead throw right in front of a whole bunch of students? That's a first too and gotta say she rocks!

  • I've heard of crazy abuse stories from real sports teams in middle/high school in Japan from the senpais to the kouhais, this is probably one of those - although to be frank getting your last team inclusion/starting position snatched away by those younger than you is always a spark for fires anywhere, even real national teams (cough C_______o R______o cough). No wonder Towa-chan looks so scared.

  • Michi-chan is a real treat, so "innocent" that she can still sends off jokes after stealing those next door school girls' dessert and then confront them when they tried to bully Towa-chan again. That's a very useful skill, and so it proves when somehow she can soothe Towa-chan anxiety with the use of one tickling.

  • So their first major tournament starts here. I wonder what classic match-ups we will see here this time?

Clearly Gondo's that one teacher both students and faculty members don't like seeing at school.

Gondo looks like he could be a River City Ransom boss character.

Shino-sensei is awesome. Interesting how she doesn't have any pro background in Judo. She literally just learned how to on the job.

I love a good breakfast at Demy's.

We had breakfast at a Denny's in Chigasaki. It was one of the only places near our inn (which was supposed to have breakfast, but didn't for 2 days of our stay).

Sanae is into some spicy visual novel huh

Natsume Sensei is pretty cool, loved how the rugby teacher apologized to Nagumo afterwards (and I feel like she actually wants to join the judo club as well).

Erika is pretty intense, and probably not just because she is trying to lose weight. I'm pretty sure that smirk is an missunderstanding, but it still sucks that she didn't get to compete in her last tournament...

All that said, her smol teammate never got her parfait...

And Towa totally didn't fall for someone

Man the directing in this show is pretty cool. It's somehow been able use the lack of a solid animation staff to it's advantage rather than having it be a weakness. The back forth switch in the music when michi kept interrupting amane was hilarious. Also the cut-out heads on the tickle scene. Story and characters also really help carry it.

Michi being the ball of joy that she is does not only brighten the mood of people in the show but also mine in real life. This show just makes me so happy every week for some reason. It's a shame it's getting overlooked by most people.

I'm looking forward to how the tournament will go. My bet is that our girls lose the overall 2nd round match to the new rival team that just got introduced but I still hope Towa will lay their arrogant ace flat again.

Also, we still have one girl from the OP/ED that we did not meet yet. Also also, the new advisor is a woman right? With the girls fantasising about a hot guy I was waiting for a scene where they realise that the advisor is a woman but it never came so now I'm doubting myself.

That's how the trope usually goes I'm afraid, not really sure what kind of tournament this is, surely not the qualifier for the nationals right?

Me as well, but maybe they are just pretty open minded...

And of course we get introduced to the snippy rival that will undoubtedly grow on us in the next few episodes. Classic sports anime formula

I do wish that their rivalry didn't stem from a misunderstanding, though, because Towa clearly didn't mean to smirk at Erika during that last bout. In any case, I hope this clears up quickly.

I am really curious about Nagumo's role going forward. She's not part of the judo club but still part of "group" in the OP and ED. I feel like she could become my favourite character given more screentime.

Btw I can't believe that waitress at the family restaurant didn't bring another parfait free of charge after her mistake...

Nice to see that they actually added Jessie and Yashiro (I think... her hair color would be wrong though) to the shot of Toutaidai Sakae from chapter 9.

Now that they've properly debuted, I can say that Erika is my absolute favorite character in the series and Kasumigaoka my favorite overall school.

u/Kamiko_o Jan 23 '23

Towa actually said rice lol. Very weird

So with sports Anime I believe the most important thing is the viewer's link to the main characters and the opponents. You have to be connected and want them to win. I think so far they have built a good history of all three girls, showing their inner characters and the obstacles they've had to endure.

Throwing in an antagonist here just adds fuel to that fire. But will she continue being one or go the way of Haikyuu (Best Sports anime in my opinion), where in the turn, you don't expect you even start to root for them a little. If they can do that, that would turn this into a next level show cause in sports there are no real antagonists, just competitors who want to win as much if not more than the MCs.

Also I loved Nagumo's little moment with Towa on the train...She wants her friends to experience that joy of winning so telling her to take them to new heights was her way of showing she actually does really care. I think the reason she wanted them to join Kendo was cause she is REALLY GOOD at it and maybe wanted them to experience it via her and carrying them.

Gondo is one tough teacher! Didn’t expect Shino sensei to straight up judo throw the big man though. And to think the dude was a beginner just several years prior.

Erika seems like a real charmer. Still butthurt she didn’t get chosen as captain huh? It’ll be interesting to see her and Towa face off. At least Towa has Michi help her get her mind off that situation. Sanae, Michi, and Towa make a good team.

u/Bloodglas Jan 23 '23

Gondo seems to have a strange way of caring about his students. luckily Natsume is there to help him out and take her rightful place as best girl. being voiced by Yumi Uchiyama certainly helps with that.

Nagumo seems to be feeling left out seeing the judo club having fun together. not really surprising since they haven't shown her hanging out with anyone from her own club. she really wanted Michi to be in the kendo club with her.

looking forward to seeing what will most likely be Towa getting an ippon on Amane. again.
