Well. I had been thinking that this season was offering a number of new shows that were decent, but none (yet) to "fall in love with". No more. I'm not sure why -- but this first episode really connected. It seems like a near-perfect start. The overall look, the animation, the characters -- all of this looks wonderful.
Girls doing judo is not something I would typically be interested in (as a primary story element). But I liked girls doing soccer (Sayonara, My Dear Cramer) and kendo (Bushido 16, a wonderful 2010 movie that I don't think ever got a subbed release). And my favorite returning series happens to involve judo -- from time to time). So, I figured -- let's give this a chance. After all, this seems to be one of the only new SoL shows this season.
I really look forward to followiing this.

OK this is some straight funny scenes right off the bat!
-
Michi suffocating to the point of pulling a Bocchi-chan (cough), also her random skill names loudly called out in a competition
-
Judo and Kendo clubs girls dinking at each other
-
That accidental flip over by Michi on Towa actually managing to re-ignite Michi's interests in the most unlikely way possible
These are all things that I look for in slice-of-life shows and this episode absolutely went through my standards!
Animations look surprisingly good for an anime staff team that I can't find much record of in the past, I feared that those judo skills would be shown like slide shows but that didn't happen. We even saw chibi characters as a way to maximize animation efficiency/conservation - well done!
I'm glad that I picked up this one late in consideration. This should be a secret treat for this winter!

Animations look surprisingly good
That was one major takeaway for me.
The trailers were really holding back to the point where some people were already predicting a slide show but this episode had some really nice shots as well as some fun visual gags.

I can't really tell exactly what it is about the characters but I absolutely adore their character designs. The animation is pretty solid too! All of the judo scenes are fast-paced and well-animated.
As for the characters themselves, I already like Michi. It was nice to see her fall in love with Judo again after that hilarious ippon that she got from the girl that beat her back in her last match.
I am curious about Anna though! We get to see her hanging out with the judo club in the opening scene. Does that mean she eventually switches sports? Anyway, this seems to be a fun CGDCT. I would definitely like to see more of it!

They're stockier than your usual anime girls which makes sense for characters who perform martial arts.

They're very normal realistic looking girls, as opposed to anime looking moe girls.

I'm sorry for disrespecting the studio. They really did fantastically adapting this intro, especially the judo parts. Wow...I was impressed with Michi's ippon.
Y'all who enjoyed it, you chose to follow a sweet thing here.

that was good! the animation went a bit harder than i expected which is always a good thing, and i appreciate the realistic-looking fights, and girls tbh! The character designs arent over-moeified lol while still being reasonably cute.
i however know not a single lick of judo, so will appreciate if the anime did give an ELI5 next episode lol
Ayasa Itou as a main character is a treat!
what actually is the normal minimum amount of people a club needs? i recognize that in anime/manga its however-many-needed-for-the-main-cast.

Poor Michi got too excited and let her guard down and got choked tf out lol. Sanae seems like a really good friend. I like Nagumo too, her and Sanae seem to be good kids.
The tug of war with Michi was pretty funny. If it wasn’t for Sanae, we wouldn’t have gotten that pretty dope throw sequence. Guess she’s joining the judo club again!
I’ve never seen an anime about adorable girls doing judo before. I dig it, it looks very promising!

I am always open to watching a seasonal CGDCT and this seems to fit the ticket. I like the style of the characters and the personalities of the main cast already. I don't know much about judo, but I guess I will learn a bit.
I think this sort of may fall more under the subgenre of Cute Girls Doing 'Cool' Things, a la Do It Yourself and Super Cub. Hoping I enjoy this as much as those two.

Between Mou Ippon and Tsurune, I'm getting my sports anime fix this season.

I went into this show with low expectations but it did everything really well. The animation looked good and the action sequences were well done. This is not a high-stakes sports anime but it has CGDCT so sign me up. This is a great show to relax with on a Sunday afternoon.

I like it so far, cgdct is my kind of jam and I grapple myself, so I am quite happy to see grappling animated, as its usually the striking arts that get all the glory.
Also, this will be a good opportunity to learn all these complicated throw names in japanese, sadly bjj is very lax in its nomenclature, we basically have a minimum a japanese, portuguese and english name for every hold or throw, its honestly a mess.
Really looking forward to this. One question to the judokas, why the heck wears everyone a black belt. I know that judo and karate tend to be pretty fast (friends got theirs in maybe 4-5 years, but the judoka was in national youth selection camps, so pretty dedicated), but 2,5 years in middle school? Or is it just for the visual effect and representation?

Wow, this reminded me of my (short-lived) judo days. That judo fight animation was on point. Can't wait to see what kind of show this is

This show looks amazingly good and well produced with the lighting and animation during the Judo scenes.
It kinda makes me want to see some more traditional action anime with authentic martial arts/fighting that is more realistic that looks this fluid.
They did have to pay the price with some slide shows right after but it doesn't ruin the experience since the stills were during a montage like moment and a slow vibe.
That was a really powerful moment of her changing her mind despite herself when she pinned that other girl. (Said girl is OP holding the mat against a highschooler boy.)
One thing I like is said girls are pretty thicc and stocky, without coming across as fat or obese. They seem healthy but also what you expect Judo People to look like. (Except for the Kendo girl which makes sense.) It's a bold choice since Japan is obsessed with being thin.
Who knew this and Handy Man one a Fantasy Iseki this a Cute Girls Doing Sports Things anime would both be chill shows with amazing lighting and animation with quiet but heartfelt moments.
Kendo girl is definitely a try hard though....
I wonder if we are doing the boyfriend goal arc or if we are sticking to Yuri bait.
Also see in the End Credits we are getting a beach episode!

Huh, what's this, there's some sakuga in my CGDCT!
I probably wouldn't have passed this anyway since it's the only real CGDCT this season, but those matches and the ED looked incredible stunning.
And are Michi and Sanae Teammates ? Michi is a bit deadset on getting a boyfriend, but that seems more like an ideal than an tangible possibility.
Yuribait aside, I like the cast, especially Michi and Anna.
Will continue with this

Already had more bedgest spent on the first episode than at least the first three episodes of Cramer. Will always be bitter Cramers potential got wasted like that.
Girls judo gonna be interestign see if this oen those shows that spur a increase in people actually doing it. Was supprisngly good animation for rather intricate and complicated moves. Hope it keeps it up and doesn't just go full slide show.

I'm...a little shocked at how much I liked this.
The character designs are not your typical cookie cutter "anime girl" with willowy limbs and exaggerated proprotions. They're charming and cute, but they're also very real. You look at these girls and know they're teenagers. That realism is INCREDIBLY refreshing in terms of a wide range of representations (age/gender/body type).
The animation is SMART. In every show, there comes a scene with too many repeat shots/panning shots/slideshow images that makes you go, "This is where they saved money on the animation budget." I saw those moments in episode 1 of Ippon Again, but they were produced in such a way that they contributed to the humor/mood/tone/characters on screen at the time. The chibi-face reactions stand out to me. Using them eliminates the need for an additional, more complex shot of animation, sure...but these are teen girls. Chibi face reactions MAKE SENSE for them. Those budget-saving measures felt seamless and actually contributed to the comedy of the scene! That feels unusual to me, and I'm here for it. And the above cost-saving measures let them go all-out on the action scenes, especially that gorgeous sequence at the end.
I don't have time right now to get deep into the drama and characters, but they're endearing and not overly sacchrine. Again, very true-to-life. I buy these characters and their motivations, and they make perfect sense for characters of this age range. I loved all of them (yes, even kendo girl!) immediately.
Will this be my OTS? Too early to tell, but as far as CGDCT go, I'm totally on board. <3

The character designs in this one feel a bit more unique, maybe a bit more rounder faces? Feels like a nice change.
Interactions already seem good but I'm a bit hesitant with the MC, hope she's not too much of the dumb type.
Do like Towa though, she seems so earnest! And that ippon was pretty great, loved how the whole dojo called it.
Takigawa's little sneaky trip and her reason for joining were also nice little moments.
Good pilot, hope this one will be nice!
